Les Choristes It is difficult to place certain movies in one specific genre. The 2004 released French movie “Les Choristes” (The Choire) directed by Christophe Barratier is one such cinematic enigma By Tausif Sanzum
“Hot in Cleveland,” is where three aged best friends from LA rediscover themselves in Cleveland. The TV series is aired at 1pm on Thursday, Friday, Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday on Comedy Central.
READ
Dan Brown’s “Inferno”, is a story revolving around Robert Langdon, a Harvard professor who has lost memory of the last few days of his life finding himself wounded in a hospital bed. The novel caters excitement and thrill that takes the readers into a mysterious world with Langdon.
The movie starts in the present, with the conductor of an orchestra receiving a letter regarding his mother, to which he returns home. Here he meets his childhood friend, Pepinot, who gives him the diary of their childhood teacher, Clement Mathieu. We are taken back almost 50 years, where we see a man arriving at a school of difficult boys, “Fond de l'Etang.” He is their new teacher and is greeted with pranks by the students. He senses musical talent among this group of children and organises a choir. 10 minutes into the movie will pull you into a magical world. All at once, you will find yourself laughing at the mischievousness of the children while feeling their pain, loneliness and helplessness. Gerard Jugnot, playing the role of the new teacher, excels as a man who is unsuccessful despite being talented, and who wants to live his life by nurturing the musical talents of the children. The child actors bring to life various facets of childhood, which all of us passed through, despite most of us
being more privileged. There is brilliant use of imagery, particularly when a person asks if he can take away the empty chair next to Clement Mathieu, indicating the loneliness in his life. The screenplay provides for humour and pathos to play side by side. The musical score is brilliant. It is haunting and sends a pleasant chill down the spine every time the choir based songs play. Even though the movie is in French, you can understand and feel each and every emotion onscreen. If you want to take a weekend break, revisit your childhood and treat your ears with some brilliant
musical scores, this is the movie for you.

Drawings to tunes
Sony to win by submission
Smartphone applications do more than just keep track of your day or entertain you with games By Mahmood Hossain There is a creative element to smart phone apps that many miss out on. Tunetrace is an amusing app that lets you take photos of your drawings and then transforms them into music. Your drawing’s image actually becomes a computer programme that generates live music. Each line in the drawing that ends or crosses in the image is lit up with blinking lights. The navigation begins and creates the music as it goes from one line to another. It may be simple to do, but the results may be complicated. Some drawings will produce music that loops, while others can be altered to go on without any repetition. This brilliant app brings the old days of pen to paper to a whole new level. You can create an entire show of sounds and lights that comes alive through your drawings.
Leave it to Sony to deliver the knockout blow By Mahmood hossain Leave it to Sony to deliver the knockout blow. The PS4 was finally revealed at this year’s E3 and its assault on the gaming world will begin this coming holiday season. When you think Sony, you think premium entertainment. Apart from the sharp and sexy design of the hardware, the price of the new gen console shocked many. At $399 their competitors (we’re talking to you Microsoft) should be very worried. The price wasn’t the main draw, of course. It was nothing but splendid news for gamers, beginners and enthusiasts alike. Players will now be able to lend, trade, and resell games without any restrictions. You read that correctly, the PS4 will support each cause. In addition, disc-based games will no longer need to be connected to the net; there will be no need to connect online or check for authentication. You can freely play offline without having to sign-in at all. There wasn’t too much new to

add to the already given specs, but Sony was very clear in their message. They came out with a confident attitude, and a presentation that was overwhelmingly accepted and left everyone excited. They showed their support to independent developers, respected their customers, and put on the right display of how to introduce a new console to the gaming world. Ultimately, it would be difficult not to buy a PS4 in the near future.

The Honda Civic is a good car, but it faces extreme competition, with other cars offering nicer interiors and more options at lower prices. On the bright side, the Civic does come with plenty of features as standard. Bluetooth, power windows and doors, a tilt and telescopic steering wheel, an AM/FM radio with CD player and USB port are all standard in the Civic. In addition, the Civic passes with above-average safety and reliability scores over many rival cars. The 2012 Civic Hybrid features a 1.5litre, four-cylinder gasoline engine,
which is joined to an electric motor with a lithium-ion battery pack that is larger than in previous models. Together, the electric motor and internal combustion engine deliver 110 horsepower, with 127 lb-ft of torque. This is more than adequate to pull the Civic Hybrid along a decent slope, but you can’t expect an adrenalinpumping performance here. It does 0-100kph in just about 10.8 seconds, and has a top speed of 190kph. Honda claims the Civic gets gas mileage of 16km/l both in the city and on highways. Though these ratings are
good, they come with quite a high price tag for an entry-level hybrid. The interior matches the harmony of its exterior design. There’s an 80s scifi feel to the dash. The controls are placed in an orderly manner, which makes it convenient for the driver to access. There is plenty of room for passengers in the front and back seats. It even has practical boot space. In addition, the Civic Hybrid comes standard with dual front side and sidecurtain airbags, traction and stability control systems, and a tire pressure monitoring system.
With this app, you might just create your own digital symphony through the works of art you produce on paper. To get things started,Tunetrace offers free lessons in a classroom online. It is absolutely free to download but is found exclusively in Apple’s App Store.

Making gel candles Have you ever considered making a gel candle? With a little effort, you can create personalised gel candles that transpire the beauty of light. Whether you use them to decorate your house or distribute them as gifts, you will find making these candles both easy and enjoyable By Itminan Tasneea Supplies Glass jar Gel wax Candle wick (preferably zinc) Glue gun Food colouring Trinkets, such as coloured aquarium gravel, marbles, glitter, sand, sea shells, pebbles, crystals, polished stones, artificial jewels or pearls u All this material can be found at Old Dhaka in candle shops u u u u u u
Steps 1 Take a glass jar and trim the candle wick about 10cm or more. Make sure that the wick extends the glass jar. Steps
5 Check the gel. If it’s cloudy, try melting a couple of more cubes of gel in it. For bubbles, allow the gel to cool to 24C before pouring.
2 Drip a spot of hot glue on the bottom of the jar, then place the wick on the glue and roll it around a pencil.
6 Add colour dye to the melted gel. A little colour will make your trinkets stand out.
3 Cut the gel wax into small cubes and melt it in a stainless steel bowl at 93C. The gel will take the consistency of syrup. 4 Add 1/4tsp of essential oil or candle scent to the melted gel.
7 Use non-flammable objects, such as tweezers, to embed your trinkets on the jar. Pour the melted wax into the jar. You may also drop your trinkets into the jar after cooling the gel. They will slowly sink to the bottom. 8 Straighten the wick and place it in the centre. The gel candle will take four hours to set.
A whole new dimension to paper flowers Itminan Tasneea
No matter how easy it may be to buy flowers from a flower shop, paper flowers will always be the simplest, most inexpensive and elegant home decor. Think about a bouquet of delightfully airy flowers that wouldn’t wither away or need any care. Learn the easiest way to make paper flowers and the most attractive way to present them. Before starting, always bear in mind that simplicity is beautiful. Let’s start with simple white flowers. Supplies 1 White translucent paper 2 Thin metal wires or floral wires (the wire should be pliable enough to give you a graceful bend but firm enough to hold its shape.) These are available at any hardware store or flower shop 3 Scissors and wire cutter 4 Glue stick or fevicol glue 5 Vase or jar 6 Tape (floral tape or the tapes used for wires) or green paper to wrap the wire
AVEN U E T TH U RS DAY, J U N E 1 3, 2013
Tips: 1 If you prefer colourful flowers, paint them with watercolours 2 To make the pistil more attractive, add glitter 3 Add another wire as a sub-branch to the main wire and cover the branch 4 Make at least a dozen flowers for the vase to look full
Various kinds of flowers can be made out of paper Step 1: Start with making the blossoms. Cut the translucent paper into a circle of 8cm. One disc of paper is required for each blossom. Fold the circle in half, then again into quarters and one final time into eights. With the circle folded tightly, cut as indicated by the dotted line in illustration. Unfold the disc, then lay it flat. Step 2: Using scissors, cut as indicated leaving a small flap (A). Use glue to stick A to B. Hold until the glue dries.
Step 3: Pinch the creases of the petals to add texture and shape to the flowers.
Step 4: For the stem, take a wire 2541cm tall. Use pliers to bend a small loop at one end. Wrap the loop with a small length of tape to form the pistil of the flower. Then, gently push the wire through the centre of the blossom. The same flowers can be made with tissue paper, which is easier to handle. The trick is to cut the petals and glue them one over another. The pistil can be covered with yellow tissue paper. To make the tissues colourful, soak them in watercolour and dry them. A ball of yarn can also be used instead of a vase.

suit up! The upkeep of a quality suit can be difficult at times, but it all comes down to how you present yourself day in and day out. In order for the entire look of a shirt and tie to be successful, attention must be paid to detail By Mahmood Hossain Here are a few tips to ensure you look your best at the office: •If possible, get all your clothes made: suits, shirts, trousers, etc. Going to a tailor will not only save money, it will also bring out the best results in you.
•As always, sizing and fitting matter most. There is no room for sagging or arriving half-heartedly into your office. Choose a suit that fits your body type, let it hug you (snug fit), but not squeeze. Keep the lengths in check as well. •It’s perfectly fine to get the same style of a suit in different, basic colours. Stick with the basics until you feel comfortable enough to try out different styles. •Mix things up at the office. It doesn’t matter if you’re in your late 20s, 30s or 40s. Change up the scene by mixing and matching with what you already have. Try a suit jacket with a pair of fitted, dressy jeans.
Going to the tailor will make you look like a million bucks without having to burn a hole in your wallet. For example, buying fabric for shirts can start at Tk400 each, while fabric for suits can start at Tk2,700 (depending on your haggling skills). Be smart and look your best by making the right choice for your office wardrobe

The best way to keep your eye on certain things is to get your clothes tailored. Men tend to take the easy way out and head for the nearest rack at stores like Artisti. The sharp and smart look doesn’t come easy, but it can be much more affordable than the ones sold in branded stores.
Q: There are plenty of weddings this summer, surprisingly. How can I keep cool by wearing a suit in this weather? By Mahmood Hossain A: There are very simple and easy ways to keep cool. If you can manage a linen suit, go for it. If you’re going for a full-on suit (three or two piece), the easiest way to beat the sweat is to avoid wearing your suit jacket until you reach the venue. Assuming the venue is air-conditioned, you shouldn’t have too much trouble putting the jacket back on. For those nonconditioned venues or outdoor events, no one is going to banish you because you skipped the tie; although to keep the sophistication intact, try having a pocket square instead.
In Fashion
For decades, the only acceptable hand jewellery for men has been the wristwatch By Mahmood Hossain Nowadays, there are all sorts of bracelets, necklaces, and rings being shown off by stylish men. But let’s stick to the basics. When looking for a watch, the focus should be on classical, timeless pieces wrapped around the wrist. In the world of horology, many people believe that if you do not have the best (or most expensive) watch, your timepiece doesn’t really matter. Wrong. While horology bourgeoisie is perfectly fine, there is still hope for those who do not have the luxury to sport an Audemars Piguet or a Patek Philippe.
What makes the wristwatch even more attractive is the way you present yourself. Respect goes to the man who makes it look effortless
The entire idea of a wristwatch is to tell time. There is no need for a fancy Tag Heuer Monaco (albeit a classic) that boasts an elegant manual chronograph. You are better off purchasing a classic dial and date wristwatch from Timex that may cost around Tk4,500. A watch of such quality does the trick. It’s a beautiful thing when you wear a brown or black leather strapped watch with a suit. Like most things, simplicity is key, so next time you think about buying a new watch, you’ll feel much more comfortable in your choice.
Q: I’ve seen a few men around wearing loafers without socks. Is that the right or wrong way of wearing loafers?
Photo: Big Stock
On the clock
Style Tip Brown leather wristwatches should go with brown belts/shoes, and black should be matched with black
A: There’s no right answer here. Loafers are more versatile than other styles of shoes. However, since it’s summer, wearing loafers without socks is the way to go. Not as serious and polished as dressy, lace-up shoes, nor as lazy and cheap as sandals, loafers provide a nice balance of comfort and sophistication. The real issue is what you’re wearing them with. As long as you have fitted, quality items in denim, trousers, chinos or even casual shorts, the loafers will look fine without socks.

Frizz ease

How to ease the frizz of wavy hair in humid weather By Sabikhun Nahar
As if the extreme heat and mad traffic weren’t bad enough summers in Dhaka top it off by giving the less fortunate of us a bad hair day, everyday. Here are a few tips to manage your hair and keep it looking fabulous this summer: l Humidity can cause your hair to appear limp and lifeless. If you have fine hair, get a haircut with some layers in it. A cut with even layers can weigh your hair down and make it sit too flat against your head. The layers will add texture and dimension to your hair. If your hair is thick or curly, the layers will help balance the weight and define curls. l To tame your hair, use shampoo and conditioner labelled “moisturising/ smoothing/hydrating” and ensure they are free of sulphate and paraben.
Photo: Big Stock
International Trends
Expert styling tips Your best bet is to soak up excess water with a towel and let your hair dry naturally. If you MUST blow dry choose a hairdryer that has technology to control static and prevent frizz, such as negative ion systems and infrared heat. Use the “cool shot” button at the end of the process to set your hair.
Repel humidity Use products such as silicone serums, anti-humidity sprays or anti-frizz mousse to tackle your hair issues. Easy as 1-2-3 l Apply anti-frizz mousse to toweldried hair and allow it to air-dry. Use your fingers to define and separate waves. Finish off with a silicone based serum on the ends. l Apply spray gel to damp hair. Diffuse the gel with a hairdryer while twirling your hair around your fingers. Finish with anti-humidity hairspray. l Try a “half-up, half-down” style to keep hair from sticking to your face. A smoothing, lightweight gel can keep your hair in place, as serums alone do not have the power to hold a style. No matter what product you use, always use it sparingly. Make sure to use a clarifying shampoo once a week to prevent build-up of products in your hair.
Now you have all the ammo you need to go out this summer and make waves!
A touch of neon The neon craze is making its way back into our wardrobes this year. It looks like one of last year's hottest trends is here for round two. A pair of bright, neon pumps can liven up any outfit and can be spotted on fashionable stars everywhere. If you're looking for a bit of comfort to go with style, keep an eye out for strappy flats as well. Bold women can shop around for loud, neon denims. The trick is to pair these with a basic top in a neutral colour.
If you're afraid you'll overdo it and look like a clown, stick to neon accents like shoes, bags and watches. Hit the stores and give this fun trend a go! Sabah Rahman

Smoky chic
Navin Ahmed has studied Cosmetic Techniques and Management at Sheridan College in Canada. She worked as a freelance make-up artist in Toronto and is the founder of GALA Wedding Planners and Makeover Studio in Dhaka.
Most people think smoky eyes are too harsh, difficult to achieve or over-the-top for the average woman. On the contrary, smoky eyes can be subtle and sexy, giving you a wide-eyed look that amplifies the WOW factor By Navin Ahmed
EXPERT TIPS: Smoky eyes are fantastic for women with small lips, as focusing on the eyes will take attention off the mouth. Remember, the eye shadow doesn’t have to be black or dark. You can achieve smoky eyes with bronze hues for a jewelled effect, or even deeper shades of blue or green. Oil and heavy eye creams will destroy eye make-up. If done properly, smoky eyes don’t have to be touched up after the initial application. Unless you want to end up looking like a raccoon, be careful not to leave any black residue on the skin just below your eyes. Use loose powder generously under your eyes to prevent staining.
A step-by-step guide on how to achieve the perfect, smouldering rock n’ roll eyes:
l Line your eyes using an intense black eyeliner, and layer on the black mascara. Clumpy, black mascara is hot with this look!
Photo: Big Stock
l Begin by dabbing some loose, translucent powder below your eyes so that you can brush off any eye shadow residue when you are done. l Apply an intense, soft, blackkohl (kajal) or black cream eyeliner to the inner rim of your eye and cover the entire eyelid. Smudge with your fingers. The colour must be jet black to give you the desired effect. l Apply black eye shadow over the entire lid. Using a dark brown shade, soften the edges with a blending brush, moving towards the brow bone. l Use a soft highlighter just below your brows and blend in with the brown shade below. l Heavily apply a pure white pencil to the inner eye rim to get the wide-eyed look. You can also use shimmery, whitegold eye shadow. l Using a small, flat eye shadow brush, apply some black eye shadow just below your inner rim to soften the kohl line and spread it out to make your eyes seem larger.
Tip Smoky eyes don’t HAVE to be black. You can create the same effect with different colours!

Hiroe kunimoto is a brand executive for Apex Adelchi Footwear Ltd. Crochet The loose-fitting crochet tops are super “in” this summer. Their slouchy shapes make them ideal for combating the heat. Pair one with a bright camisole and you’re good to go! There are some options available in pretty shades like peach in Ecstasy outlets throughout the city. If you’re looking for a bargain, you can also spot these tops opposite Dhaka College. Ideally paired with floral skirts rather than trousers or jeans, the crotchet is the perfect item to embrace this summer!
Chiffon tops Light and dressy, floral print chiffon tops are a must-have, not only in Bangladesh, but all over the world. Simple, red flower prints on a white background or deep blue prints on beige add the perfect feminine touch to your overall look. Take a trip to your favourite fabric shop and head to the tailor for your own original piece.
Pastel shirts
Plaid shirts have been a hot trend for quite a while, and it looks like they’ll be sticking around for more. Branch out by choosing bright pastels like apricot, light green or blue. Go for shirts that have a mullet cut (longer in the back and shorter in the front.) Whether you combine these shirts with skinny jeans or baggy pants, they are a wardrobe staple that every girl should own.
Cotton jersey shrug Highly recommended, these light, summer cover-ups are widely available everywhere from New Market to Cats Eye. Choose a version on the longer side, which is in fashion at the moment. Layer your shrug over a round-necked T-shirt or even a basic tank top. Caution: DO NOT make a “fashion faux pas” by pairing these with transparent or laced, cotton leggings!

We want our MTV! A peek into the mind of the man who brought MTV to our doorstep By Mahmood Hossain
We already know how music affects our everyday lives, but when lyrics of our favourite musicians come alive in videos, our eyes get glued to the screen. Music videos are short films with memorable melodies, and we are unable to escape their hypnotic grasp. Wide-eyed and slack-jawed, we were compelled us love the music and artistes even more. This was the essence of MTV (Music Television), and there is one man who aims to bring the essence of MTV to Bangladesh. Born into a family of professor and doctor, Rabeth Khan chose to rebel. The managing director of Creinse and CEO of both MediaAxis and Macomm deviated from the norm and ventured down a more creative path. We sat down one-on-one to discuss the ambition behind bringing MTV to Bangladesh. He seemed professional to the core: cool, calm and collected, as we would expect any successful CEO to be. After the formalities, we got straight down to business. The first and obvious question was when it all came about, and how it ended up on his table. “Actually, it wasn’t placed on any table. It was an aspiration of mine for a long time,” he answered. Khan was a mover and shaker from the get-go. In the late 90s, as he was transitioning from a student to a career man, he took the initiative to produce music videos for local talents at the time.
AVEN U E T TH U RS DAY, J U N E 1 3, 2013
In December 1998, those videos were featured on MTV India for half an hour, but it wasn’t just international attention he gained. He brought it to the domestic audience as well by producing and hosting shows on ATN Bangla (Music Mania) and ETV (Close Up E-Zone). He clearly had the drive and passion to celebrate the musical talent around him, and his guidance took music video production to a new level. How did he gather the necessary resources to pull this stunt off? From his own pocket. Clearly, the man talks the talk and walks the walk. I asked if he would ever consider the tag “the man who brought MTV to Bangladesh.” Proud of his accomplishments, he replied: “I see myself as the man who takes on challenges, instead.” It’s not attention he strives for. He has a genuine drive to accomplish goals others might not have dared to face. He believes there is something higher to aim for everyday, and he instils this belief in his team. “From day one, I want to inspire this virtue in the other team members and hope they carry on with it, as there is plenty more to accomplish,” he said. There was a burning desire to achieve more. There was a temptation to test his resolve, to see if this successful businessman could express his emotions. I asked about his personal connection with music itself. “I’m not a musician, but a music lover
like everyone else,” he began. At a professional level, he had always been involved with music in one way or another. With that said, the conversation gradually strolled down memory lane, an unavoidable topic of when speaking about MTV. Who doesn’t miss the old days? Which video stood out the most, the one that was highly influential or made him dance along? He smirks and replies without hesitation: “Black or White,” a huge hit by Michael Jackson. We shared a common understanding and appreciation for the King of Pop. “I couldn’t single out one favourite artiste, but Michael Jackson was THE trendsetter.” MJ truly made other videos look like an after-school special. Let’s
not forget, there were others that had a say in shaping the music scene, like Madonna. As always, different genres add different things to the mix. His own taste in music tis an assortment platter. It was refreshing to discover what kind of playlist he keeps. “The golden oldies, of course.” You could see the smile creeping in now. “I have a nice mix, depending on the mood.” He mentioned his recent favourites. “I like Bruno Mars and Katy Perry. Absolutely loved her Firework video. Kelly Clarkson and Maroon 5,” he squeezes in: “they have great work.” Coldplay also makes his list, along with local sounds. He is an avid listener of Miles and Souls from old time and Shunno and Chirkut from new times.

Reluctantly, I placed the issue: “Where has the music gone?” on the table. Regarding international music, it simply had to be asked. Over more than 30 years, we’ve seen MTV go from all day everyday music to unbearable reality television shows. The full-featured music videos were cut down to snippets instead, a frustration that most of the MTV generation shares. Thankfully, Khan agreed. “You know, I asked the same question to the MTV heads.” As a whole, MTV still stands for music, but with added “glocalisation,” ie taking a product or service that is developed and distributed globally and altering it to adapt to the local market. The MTV that is provided in the Asian market is more about music, but since we are only exposed to MTV India, it leaves something to be desired. Apparently it’s what the Indian market
asked for, so they felt the need to deliver. He makes it very clear that MTV Bangladesh Program Platform will be more focused on music. Khan wants to guide the local music scene into a reachable frontier. “The mind-set has to change. We need to go beyond. I directly asked some of the local talents who have performed in places like Australia: “What was the atmosphere like? Who was your audience? Bangalis. That’s it.” His plan is to endorse our own music and artistes to the rest of the world. “Why can’t we have our artistes joining the international artistes? Why not share the same stage?” By now, I can see a faint fire flickering in his eyes; the passion in him, although composed, had finally revealed itself. The man who took on challenges came forth, and for a good cause. Upset over how creative talent has to resort to going
abroad for a successful future, he adds: “They have plenty of potential, but lack the proper direction.” It’s not just a challenge, it’s something he believes in. Initially, this will become an opportunistic platform for up and coming artistes, as well as the already established, to enter the global scene. With the first scheduled programmes, MTV will be a launching pad for VJs, a director and other musical talents. MTV Bangladesh will be a force behind the individuals who wish to create their own path and take their abilities to the next level.
With the first week of September set as the launch date, Khan wanted to say one last thing before we ended our conversation: “To all the music lovers, be with us. Be a part of the journey, and we will reach greatness”

Tug of war I’m a 48-year-old man in a second marriage with a 33-year-old woman. She was previously married and has an 11-year-old daughter, while I have a nine-year-old son from my previous marriage. Both our kids are constantly fighting, having aggressive arguments and creating a tense environment at home. Sometimes my wife and I see eye to eye, but recently, if I defend my son when he’s not at fault, she thinks I am being biased towards him and do not care about her daughter. I’m tired of this constant tug-of-war. How do I fix this mess? K
Betrayal Dear K, Before you can even attempt to resolve the problems between both your children, you two need to have a serious talk. Sit down with your wife and explain to her that you love both children just as much as she does. Tell her there is no bias involved, and sometimes children need a little bit of discipline – be it your child or hers. If your son had been at fault, you wouldn’t have accused her of being biased when she tried coaching or disciplining him. Mitigate the communication gap you are suffering from. Both of you love each other and your children, so tell her to keep that in mind.

Dear AA, I was having coffee with friends, and we were discussing why it is that the betrayed wife is always the last one to know when she’s being cheated on. We could not come up with an answer. A betrayed wife

Loud mouth
I have a 7-month-old son who is generally very happy and friendly. However, he has started yelling for no apparent reason at all hours of the day. He gets very loud and boisterous, and it is a bit embarrassing when we’re out in public. It’s also hard to distract him or calm him down once he gets going, and it’s starting to grate on my nerves. Why is he doing this? - Anxious Mom Dear Anxious Mom, Your son is at a phase in his life where he is discovering new things, one of which is his voice. He is learning how to communicate and may simply be enamored with all the sounds he can make, and wants to convey that enthusiasm loudly! While it can be nerve-wracking, try to be patient and appreciate that it is a phase he’ll soon grow out of as his understanding grows and he learns to communicate more effectively in other ways.

I’m a new mother – my daughter is barely a year old – in her late 20s. I love being a mother but recently I’ve started to feel very insecure about my looks and yearn for the days when I had a flat belly and firm thighs. I work out as much as my new schedule will allow but I fear I will never look like my old self again and my husband will start to look at younger, more attractive women. Help!
Betrayal always comes as a big surprise. It comes as a lightning bolt in what appeared on the whole to be a normal, smooth life. It gives birth to an enormous landslide, which engulfs not only the life of the couple, but also the children, the extended family and the friends who feel obliged to take sides and make matters worse. However, after the initial shock, a little clarity arises. Certain behavior of the cheating spouse, like coming home late, attending work meetings on weekends, being preoccupied with the cell phone, spending a long time in the bathroom answering a call and expressing a bored or irascible attitude when at home becomes clear. Suddenly, hints that friends gave come alive: the signs were there, everybody knew except the spouse. Suddenly, there is a feeling of double betrayal, of shame and humiliation. The betrayed asks how she could be so blind and deaf? The signs were clear, and the “cheater” was leaving proof behind in an unconscious, or possibly conscious, desire to be found out. The betrayed was not yet ready to see, and so unconsciously shoved the signs deep down, as dealing with such situations is too painful. When the betrayed is ready to see, she allows herself to see, and the events unfold in front of her. In a way, she is finally able to deal with the situation and take positive action. Healing with the spouse is possible.
Dear Yummy mummy, It is normal to feel insecure about your new body, but try to keep in mind that this body recently performed a miracle. You gave birth to a child, which entails both psychological and physiological changes that will take longer than a year to adjust to. Be patient with yourself and trust that your husband loves you for more than your physical appearance!

The wonders of green tea
We are all familiar with black tea, but what about green tea? Green tea has many health benefits that you might not know about. The tea’s processing avoids fermentation; therefore, it retains a maximum amount of antioxidants and poly-phenols, the very substances that give green tea its many benefits By Sabiha Akhond Rupa Below are a list of proven amazing facts about the health benefits of having green tea: Skin care: The antioxidants and anti-inflammatory actions of green tea help remove wrinkles and signs of aging.
Oral health: The molecules of green tea contain catechin polyphenols, an antibacterial that can help reduce bad breath, tooth decay and other dental conditions.
Depression: Theanine is a kind of amino acid found in green tea that prevents depression and anxiety.
Diabetes: Green tea can control blood glucose levels by slowing the rise of blood sugar after eating, which can prevent high insulin spikes and resulting fat storage.
Healthy heart: Research published by Harvard showed that people who drink one cup of green tea a day have a 44% lower risk of getting a heart attack, as the tea helps control blood pressure. Green tea also helps reduce bad cholesterol and improves the percentage of good cholesterol.
Bone health: Consuming green tea for around 10 years decreases the risk of osteoporotic fractures due to its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects.
Cancer: Yes, green tea has elements beneficial in preventing cancer, including prostate, pancreatic, breast, colorectal, esophageal, bladder, lung and stomach cancer. Research shows that the tea’s catechins prevent cell mutation, deactivate certain carcinogens and reduce formation and growth of tumours. To get the necessary anti-cancer benefits, drink as many as four cups of green tea a day.
Weight loss: A study by the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition proved that participants who drank four cups of green tea daily had higher fat oxidation by 12% and burned an average of 67 additional calories a day. The poly-phenol increases the levels of fat oxidation and helps to burn fats. This study recommends you have at least three cups of green tea a day to lose weight.

Direction: Mix together the honey and vinegar in a small bowl and stir in the strawberries; set aside while you make the sandwiches. Spread 1tsp butter on one side of each slice of bread. Top first slice of each sandwich (butter side down) with strawberry jam and 1 1/2 pieces of cheese. Place the remaining slices of bread on top (butter side up). Grill the sandwiches in a large griddle over low heat until golden on both sides. Serve with a sprinkle of icing sugar.
To some cooks, frying is an art. When deep-frying foods like whole fish, french fries or tempura, it gets exceedingly difficult to fry to the perfect consistency. uPerfectly fried goodies come at a price – steer clear of local oil brands, and invest in canola and safflower oil. Any oil with a high smoke point is ideal for frying u Choose a very heavy large skillet to fry with u Before adding the food to your skillet, make sure the oil is boiling hot, but not burning u If you don’t have a deep-frying thermometer, you’ll know the oil is ready when a 2.5cm cube of bread becomes brown in the oil after 60 seconds. The oil is then around 185C – the ideal temperature for deep-frying u Right before starting to fry the food, add a tsp of salt into the oil. This will prevent it from splattering u Leave a 5cm gap at the top of the skillet u Pat dry any food before putting it in the oil u Put small batches of food into the skillet, as the temperature of oil decreases with every batch u Gently place the food into the skillet. Don’t drop it from the top u Ensure that the food is uniform in shape, so that it all cooks in the same amount of time

Having the right frame From family photos to expensive artwork, it is a common practice to adorn our walls with hangings. How these hangings are framed has an impact on the rooms they are placed in. In the west, masterpieces used to be framed in heavily ornamented frames covered with gold leaves. In quite a few cases, these lavish frames stole the glory, rendering the artwork secondary. Unless it is intentional, this should never be the case
In my personal opinion, family portraits, especially those of living members, should never be heavily framed. The idea is to engage with the content of the photograph and not the frame. I also discourage having family portraits in formal living rooms. They should be confined to the environs of family spaces and bedrooms. In the past, we used to have carpenters make our frames. Later, readymade frames of steel or plastic became available, and in most cases, they were aesthetically bland. Now there are plenty of frame shops, often attached to art galleries, that offer a variety of frames to choose from. Choices range from the outer, formal frame to the inner, secondary frame that is usually cut out of boards and can be used to complement the
content of the frame. There are a few simple rules that can make a frame blend in and complement its contents. For black and white photographs, black frames are the safest way to go, followed by different shades of grey. Nothing looks more dramatic than a large, black and white photograph set in a thin, black frame and hung on a stark, white wall. I have seen many masterpieces framed in gold-painted wood, and others in aluminum-cut frames. Try avoiding the painted wood frame altogether. Aluminum frames work for photographs, but not for oils and pastels. For the finer finishes, choose a frame that is varnished or lacquered. Nowadays, they come in a wide range of browns and earth tones to choose from.

CHOOSING THE RIGHT PET CAT By N Anita Amreen
It’s said cats have nine lives, but truth be told, without proper care, the days in your cat’s life can be numbered. Once you’ve made the decision to adopt a pet cat, there are several choices you must make. Here’s a brief guide to help you make the right choices:
Choosing your cat’s home Would you prefer your cat to live indoors or outdoors? Potty training and the threat of insects will be two determinants of your cat’s new home. No matter your choice, there are several advantages and disadvantages to having a cat in or outside the house. Bringing your cat home Once you’ve brought your new companion home, allow him to walk around and get a feel of the place. Introduce him to his surroundings, and set a particular corner for him to retreat into when he wants to be alone. This is also the best time to show him where to relieve himself.
food, and don’t allow him to eat anything and everything he pleases. While “human food” can be fed to your cat, it’s advisable to also feed him packaged catfood. A cat cannot survive on vegetables, so make sure to include enough protein in his diet. Your best option is to feed him differentcatfoodand snacks from any leading departmental store in town.
Tip: Be careful about feeding your cat dairy product
Tip: Get any plants or low lying furnishings out of his reach. Cats will climb and leap on any surface they can reach Feeding your cat Most cat owners jump to the conclusion that it’s okay to feed their cats just about everything. Wrong. Feed your cat quality

Picking your pet cat Do you want to buy a Persian pet cat, or would you like to adopt an innocent stray? Remember that this cat is going to be your responsibility, so choose wisely. Make a commitment only when you are absolutely sure about your decision. If you’re choosing a kitten,
keep in mind that it will demand much more care and attention. If you want a cat, pick one that will fit your lifestyle.
