Fantasy Photos in Lords Valley For 30 years, Bonnie McCaffery traveled the world teaching her creative quilting techniques. That passion was replaced with a passion for portrait photography and Photoshop. While she does traditional portraits, headshots and senior photography, she also loves to create fantasy photos in Photoshop by combining photos she has taken to create a piece of art. The fantasy photos will often have a

hidden message within the piece. Combining her portrait photography skills with her Photoshop skills, she creates personalized fantasy photo art. The Office/Gallery at Chant Realtors welcomes Bonnie McCaffery and her collection of Fantasy Photos, from July 1 through August 27. Greater Newburgh Symphony Orchestra: Summer Pops Celebrate Independence & Freedom Join the celebration of America’s Independence with the Greater Newburgh Symphony Orchestra (GNSO) on the Great Lawn at Boscobel House and Gardens, 1601 NY-9D, Garrison, for the Outdoor Summer Pops Concert on July 2 at 7:30pm. “This concert has been designed around that most cherished of American values: “Freedom”. Each piece relates to this notion in one way or another. From the dawning of a new era with Strauss’ sunrise (made famous in 2001: A Space Odyssey), to the great hymn of liberty in Holst’s Jupiter to the majesty of the Great Gate of Kiev dedicated to Tsar Alexander II emancipator of the serfs, to Lincoln’s magisterial words in Copland’s portrait of the former president, to the grand climax of Tchaikovsky’s beloved 1812 Overture. The whole program will serve as a joyous reminder of how lucky we are to be living in the Land of the Free,” said Maestro Russell Ger. Other “Freedom” examples for the concert: Mozart: Free kidnapped beloved Konstanze, and Verdi: Freedom of Jewish people after exile.

Gates open at 6:00pm. Performance begins at 7:30pm. NOTE: No pets of any kind are allowed. Phone: 845-265-3638. The Sultans of Swing Frank Sinatra was greatly influenced by the intimate, easy-listening vocal style (crooning) of Bing Crosby and began his musical career in the swing era with bandleaders Harry James and Tommy Dorsey. While Sinatra never learned how to read music, he worked very hard from a young age to improve his abilities in all aspects of music. The U.S. Postal Service issued a 42cent postage stamp in honor of Sinatra

in May 2008, commemorating the tenth anniversary of his death. Ella Fitzgerald was noted for her purity of tone, impeccable diction, phrasing, timing, intonation, and a “hornlike” improvisational ability, particularly in her scat singing. In 2008, the Downing-Gross Cultural Arts Center in Newport News named its new 276-seat theater the Ella Fitzgerald Theater, several blocks away from her birthplace. Her extensive cookbook collection was donated to the Schlesinger Library at Harvard University. There is a bronze sculpture of Fitzgerald in Yonkers, the city in which she grew up. In 2007, the U.S. Postal Service announced that Fitzgerald would be honored with her own postage stamp. On July 23 at 4:00pm in Aquinas Hall, 330 Powell Avenue, Newburgh, the GNSO will musically honor these two American icons for their unique contributions to our musical heritage. Tickets: www.newburghsymphony. org and at the doors.

Classic Films in Milford Film Historian John DiLeo continues his classic film series this month with the perfect film for the holiday weekend, an 80th anniversary screening of Yankee Doodle Dandy (1942), highlighted by James Cagney’s Oscar-winning performance as George M. Cohan. Cagney, like Cohan, was an IrishAmerican who had been a song-anddance man early in his career. His unique and seemingly odd presentation style, of halfsinging and half-reciting the songs, reflected the style that Cohan himself used. Cohan is said to have been born on the 4th of July, Joan Leslie & James Cagney as he wrote in the lyrics of his song, Yankee Doodle Dandy. However, Cohan was actually born on July 3, the date of DiLeo’s 4:00pm film showing at the Milford Theater. What more can be said about Some Like It Hot (1959) which opened to critical and commercial success and is considered to

be one of the greatest films of all time. The film was produced without approval from the Motion Picture Production Code (Hays Code), because it features LGBT-related themes, including crossdressing. The overwhelming success of Some Like It Hot is considered one of the reasons behind the replacement of the Hays Code in the 1960s. Billy Wilder chose to shoot the film in black and white as Jack Lemmon and Tony Curtis in full drag costume and make-up looked “unacceptably grotesque” in early color tests. Despite Marilyn Monroe’s contract requiring the film to be in color, she agreed to it being filmed in black and white after seeing that Curtis and Lemmon’s make-up gave them a “ghoulish” appearance in color. Shadowland: A Crossword Puzzle and a World Premiere Play by Tom Hanks Shadowland Stages has cast comedienne Kyle June Williams in its second production of the season, The Crossword Play (or Ezmeranda’s Gift). Williams is an actor, writer, and touring comic playing sold out performances at The Kennedy Center, The Apollo in London, and Radio City Music Hall to name a few. She is also a voice over artist for Nickelodeon, Paramount, and voices Chichi the Hammerhead Shark for Baby Shark Brooklyn. Kyle has been lucky enough to work in TV and film in LA and New Orleans and is over the moon to return to the stage in New York. In The Crossword Play we join an expert level crossword puzzlemaker in a puzzle-making workshop, where she guides us through the conventions, strictures and rules of crossword puzzle creation - until things get a bit unruly. The Studio makes a perfect place for this inventive, environmentally conceived production and puts the audience “in the room” as events unfold. About the combination of play and production venue, artistic director Brendan Burke said, “We’re so fortunate at Shadowland to have a second venue, The Studio, for shows like this that benefit from an intimate relationship between the audience and performer. In this case, the audience will be the attendees of a crossword workshop in the world of the play.”

Director Mêlisa Annis chimed in: “I am thrilled to be back as Shadowland Stages is my favorite theater, and theater community in New York.” An award winning playwright and director, Annis has had the pleasure of working with Shadowland Stages (The Night Alive, Mystery of Love & Sex, Disgraced) and numerous theaters across the country. Playwright Donna Hoke’s work has been seen in 47 states and on five continents. She also serves on the Dramatists Guild Council, is an ensemble playwright at Road Less Traveled Productions, blogger, moderator of the Official Playwrights of Facebook, and a New York Times-published crossword puzzle constructor. “First Saturday” matinee will be the “vaxxed & masked” performance of the show, in which patrons are required to provide proof of vaccination and wear masks while inside the building. Aside from this performance, it is not anticipated that any Covid protocols will be enforced (though masks are, of course, optional). The production of The Crossword Play (or Ezmeranda’s Gift) will be performed June 24 to July 10 at The Studio at Shadowland Stages, 14 Market Street, Ellenville. It is one of TWO world premiere productions in the 2022 season, with the other being the Tom Hanks cowritten Safe Home which follows.

Special for previews: First Friday at 8:00pm, First Saturday 2:00pm Matinee are ‘pay what you will’ at the box office.

3D Time Machine in Huguenot The Town of Deerpark Museum will present a program by Leonard Mercilliott; 3D Time Machine - Local Maps in 3D. This program will feature 3D aerial photos taken between 1939 and 2004 of the local landscape of the Neversink River Valley in the Town of Deerpark. Photogrammetry is the art, science, and technology which records, measures and interprets photographic images and patterns. Using this process, reliable photographic information about local physical objects and the environment will be projected on a large screen in 3D. The principal used is triangulations by taking photos from at least two different locations. The so called “lines of sight” can be developed from each camera to points on objects. Leonard Mercilliott, with 35 years of

mapmaking experience, has used special software to create 3D renderings of local landscapes with the images captured by cameras. During the program these images will be viewed on a large screen and all participants will receive special glasses in order to view his aerial photos in 3D. Discussion will be about the changes that have taken place in geography and/or physical features over the years. The program is at the Neversink Valley Grange building, 35 Grange Road, Huguenot, on July 17, at 3:00pm. This program is sponsored by a grant from the Deerpark Heritage Fund, a component fund of the Community Foundation of Orange and Sullivan. Free program and refreshments. For information call 845-754-8070 or 845-856-2702.

The Wallkill River School Leaves a Mark - “Misunderstood Women Project”

“Artemisia Gentileschi Suffered for Her Art” (detail) by Lisa Winika

Lisa Winika is a self-taught “outsider” artist who expresses her vision through diverse media including drawing, painting, sculpting, photography, collage, and assemblage and in varied genres such as abstract, surreal, conceptual, and visionary. Winika’s current solo exhibit at the the Wallkill River School, (WRS, soon to be Wallkill River Center for the Arts), titled, Misunderstood Women Project, seeks to cast a light on some unexplored ideas about women that deeply influence the foundational thought process and emotional undercurrent of society. By looking at individual women, the artist seeks to present a universal and intersectional portrait. Some of her subjects are historic and public, some are

Winika goes on to explain, “I hope to call attention to this circumstance by offering alternative views of at least some of the myriad women throughout history who have been misunderstood.” The pieces in this particular exhibit are rendered in mixed media, and are the start of an ongoing project that will eventually feature approximately 100 works. At this time, originals will not be offered for sale. However, reproductions will be available for purchase. William Noonan, chair of the curating department at WRS concludes,

“Misunderstood Women Project is a captivating stroll through female history. Winika evocatively tells these stories of women through the ages with a blend of admiration, pathos and humor. These brief stories vary and each delivers us a fresh understanding of a character that maybe we knew...or maybe she is a new discovery for us.” The WRS is also pleased to present its first ever national juried group show, Leave a Mark: Works on Paper. 32 works on paper were chosen by jurist Winika, whose show is in the adjoining gallery. Noonan conceived and organized the exhibit and supervised the national entry process. He explained, “Leave a Mark is an exciting collection of works on paper. The only unifying theme being

the act of making marks on or with paper. This ubiquitous material is too often not given its due in the art world. The accessible and ephemeral nature of paper as substrate invites an incredibly broad range of responses from all types of artists.” He continued, “Artists from across the country submitted to this exhibition, many local and regional artists are included as well. With the diversity in this show there is sure to be something for everyone to relate to and enjoy.” Both exhibits are on view at WRS July 1 to August 28. An opening reception will be held on July 9, from 5:00pm7:00pm at the WRS, 232 Ward Street, Montgomery. For info: 845-457-ARTS, or visit www.wallkillriverschool.com

Photography Exhibition, Hurleyville The Day I Went Home, a photography exhibit by Douglas Shindler, Tyler Sanford & Michael Davis: “is a collection of photos that emphasize the space, people, and feelings of our home in Sullivan County. “The space we exist in here has a very rich history that took a turn for the worse well before we were born. So that’s all it is to us now, history, as there isn’t much left here anymore. In the present day the interest in our eyes lies within the remains of our former cultural centers, living spaces, and most importantly in the people we surround ourselves with. The dull, gloomy, rundown nature of our home is vibrantly colored by the remarkable people who reside here. “The work exemplifies this stark contrast of the environment and the people who reside therein, giving the viewer an opportunity to grow an understanding of the area and the people within it. It also

5th Annual “Plein Air Milford” Exhibit The fifth annual Plein Air Milford provides artists and art lovers with another chance to celebrate Milford’s historic buildings, parks, gardens, and streetscapes of one of Pennsylvania’s most charming towns. So much is historic - but so much is new. In June, artists from all over the Hudson and Delaware Valleys celebrated and painted some of the same old buildings, but many of them are now owned by brand new people. “Our reception has always been so warm,” explains one of the organizers. “I was expecting people to say ‘hey, stop blocking up the sidewalk’, but instead they take pictures of us, ask us about our work, and bring us coffee.” The community painting party took place on June 25. Artists’ completed work will be on display on July 9, from 1:00pm-4:00pm in the Green Room at the Tom Quick Inn, 411 Broad Street. 18

Weekend of Chamber Music in Jeffersonville, Livingston Manor and Liberty Weekend of Chamber Music’s (WCM) 29th season has arrived, with works by Composerin-Residence Hannah Kendall, the early and mighty Piano Quintet in g minor of Sibelius; Hannah Kendall, works for soprano & composer ensemble of Bach, Berio and Stravinsky; the G Major violin sonata of Brahms; the first string quartet of Benjamin Britten; talks, improvisations; and much more! Known for Orli Shaham, her attentive piano arrangements and immersive worldbuilding, Hannah Kendall’s music looks beyond the boundaries of composition. Her work bridges gaps between different musical cultures, both honoring and questioning the contemporary tradition while telling new stories through it. Contrasting fine detail with limitless abandon, she has become renowned both as a composer and a storyteller, confronting our collective history with narratively-driven pieces centered on bold mission statements. Her ensemble pieces subvert audience expectations of ‘quiet and loud’, ‘still and moving’; scattering those musical opposites unexpectedly. The sounds are visceral, but their placement is complicated, disclosing the detail that exists beneath. Hannah Kendall’s work has been widely celebrated, and has been performed extensively and across many platforms. She is currently composing an Afrofuturist opera for experimental vocalist and movement artist Elaine Mitchener, and is the recipient of the 2022

Art & Music Lectures at Desmond One of the 20th century’s most important and critically acclaimed sculptors, Isamu Noguchi’s artistic output included furniture and lighting designs, ceramics, Noguchi architecture, and set (1904-1988) designs. As a child of mixed heritage, Noguchi was born in Los Angeles and moved to Japan with his mother as a young child. Returning to the U.S. as an adolescent, he began his sculptural journey as a youthful apprentice. Today, a visitor to Storm King Art Center could not miss Momo Taro - a site specific, nine-part, forty-ton granite sculpture that hugs the earth and sits atop a specially landscaped hill. Join Laura Nicholls as she explores the works of this celebrated sculptor on July 20 at 12:30pm. With all of the terrible events of the past two years, missing a Birthday Party normally would not be a big deal. However, in December of 2020 the world missed out on celebrating the 250th birthday of the great Ludwig Van Beethoven, born on December 16, 1770.

This milestone is significant enough that it needs to be observed, even if a little late. Because his symphonies, piano concertos and other large-scale works are so monumental Beethoven and iconic, people (1770-1827) often fail to appreciate Beethoven’s more intimate compositions. While we don’t want to be unappreciative of Beethoven’s magnificent symphonies, many scholars believe his chamber works to be his greatest accomplishment. A concert program features two Beethoven chamber works: his Grand Trio in C, op. 87 and his Allegro for a Musical Clock, op 33. The program also features music by friends and contemporaries of Beethoven including Anton Reicha and Francois Devienne. Beethoven and his Contemporaries, Lecture & Concert by Kenneth Korn happens on July 29 at 10:30am. The lectures and concert take place at The Alice Desmond Center, Town of Newburgh Recreation Department, 6 Albany Post Road, Balmville. To register: 845-565-1326.

“Telling Stories and Seeing Color” The July/August Summer show at UpFront Exhibition Space, entitled, Telling Stories and Seeing Color, contains works of conscious thought and luminous color. Kate Horan’s art tells painted stories that are metaphors and puns of human and animal relationships. Her new paintings are shadow boxes of painted images interacting with real elements forming a collage that speaks volumes about humanity.

Judith Cramer (see work above) paints in pastel the luminosity of ocean currents. Her streaming colors produce a soothing melodic flow of blues and greens in alternating bands, highlighted by soft cresting waves. Roz Hodgkins’ paintings in this show are from her series about Greek and

Roman mythology (see work above). The classical legend about Minerva is a story of the Roman goddess of music, arts and crafts. Other characters she has envisioned are Psyche, Echo, Daphne and Prometheus. Alva Zingaro’s art is about seeing color as light and action. In one still life, she uses yellow to push objects forward. In other pieces, she models shapes by using highlights. In her landscape the aerial perspective is displayed by alternating the tones of the colors creating an atmospheric space. “It is the business of the artist to make humanity aware of itself.” -Ezra Pound. The show runs July 1-August 28, with a reception on July 17 from 1:00pm6:00pm at 31 Jersey Avenue, Port Jervis. For information, call 845-754-1808.

“Psalter or the Perpetually Immobile Machine” by David Dann

This show of objects and sculpture will be the first public display of Dann’s work. Working as a commercial artist for the past 30 years, he has been quietly making art as a way of investigating the meaning of existence. His objective has been to create pieces that are readily accessible to viewers, engaging on a personal level, and easily acquired while occupying a curious space between artwork and commodity. Now retired, he lives in Sullivan County and is currently working on a book of short stories.

What does love look like inside the brain? Anger? Madness? Pure joy? All these thoughts and emotions are essentially what makes us who we are yet they are invisible. These are some of the questions Federova asks herself when she cuts her abstract portraits using X-Acto blades and black Fedrigoni, masterly crafted Italian paper. Step into a world of intrigue, betrayal, and the ultimate karma, and see Rigoletto exploding onto the stage at Delaware Valley Opera (DVO). Never underestimate the power of a heartbroken father’s curse! Rigoletto, the Court Jester of the Duke of Mantua, makes a living out of humiliating the Members of the Court. Protected by the ruthless Count, no personal tragedy is too painful or humiliating to serve as fodder for Rigoletto’s cruel merriment. When the Duke of Mantua, aided by Rigoletto, seduces the daughter of the stately and dignified Count Monterone, the elderly gentleman places a curse...“La Maledizone”...upon both the Duke and Rigoletto, which is brushed aside as the

But...Rigoletto has a secret: his own beautiful, innocent, conventraised daughter, Gilda, whom he keeps protected behind high walls, secluded from the world and its evil influences. The Count’s curse sets forth a cataclysmic chain of events that forms the story line of one of Giuseppe Verdi’s most famous operas, with well-known sumptuous arias, duets, trios and quartets that are among the most beautiful of the operatic literature. DVO proudly presents a stellar cast, headed by baritone Mark Cotton as Rigoletto, and Tshombe Selby, as the Duke of Mantua. The lovely Gilda is played by Kelsey Watts and the stately

Delaware & Hudson CANVAS July 2022

The Orchard Street Press (Gates Mills, Ohio) National Poetry Contest winner for Spring 2022 is Florida resident Robert Milby. Milby won First Prize ($500 and the Malovrh-Fenlon Poetry Prize) for his poem, Beethoven’s Ninth Sonata. “Beethoven’s Ninth Sonata” The piano sonata is autumn leaves, dyed in sound, chasing each other like giddy schoolchildren down a blustery country lane. The leaves dislodge from the keyboard tree, headlong to a path of afternoon windplay. Orange and ruddy rustics carry softer yellows along, coaxing those still younger greens with red freckles and wild opinions. Yet, when grey brushes brood into later tones of day colder hues call the leaves over frostdressed stone walls, beyond harvest-abandoned fields, and shadowed wells, quieting pliant faces to discs of ice. Now winter’s recital intones solitude, notes hung like breath garlands above the gloom, speaking in rustled pages; keys of frost and snow, outside the desolate hall. Also as a finalist selection, Milby’s Beyond Satie. CANVAS congratulates you, Robert! Visit www.robertmilbypoetry.com
