I am so gratified to read it and one of the things that is so special about the paper If I may, is that you not only list events but with many of the events you give great backgrounds - you write such great articles to “fill it all in”.

April 30: WRCA & Farlekas Fund Premiere Featuring Ziavras & Margoshes

The Wallkill River Center for the Arts (WRCA) have been expanding and creating programs beyond the already established and successful visual arts classes, exhibits and festivals.

Housed in the historic Patchett House in Montgomery, WRCA has enjoyed the support and generous donations from Patchett family patriarchs, Arthur and his brother, Joseph and their families.

After his recent death, WRCA received word that Arthur included the organization in his will and bequeathed a generous sum to the non-profit. Honoring his gift, WRCA has named the new music series after Arthur Patchett. Under the extraordinary creative energy and talents of Music Program Director, Judi Silvano, WRCA has formed the Arthur Patchett Memorial Music Series. The plan is to offer several concerts a year in various genres in select venues throughout Orange County.

WRCA Executive Director, Sarah Pierson explains, “Arthur was a lover of music - notably opera and classical. We found it fitting to honor the memory of this generous man who supported our mission and graciously thought to include us as part of his legacy.”

Silvano said, “The concert series will serve as a form of outreach and introduction to our organization for those who may not be familiar with our vibrant and varied offerings.”

A series of this nature could not be offered without further support. In this case, the inaugural sponsor and kick-starter of The WRCA’s first concert is the Chris Farlekas Legacy Fund. “We are grateful for the generous support and enormous inspiration provided by the Farlekas Fund!,” said Silvano.

The Fund distributes grants to various charitable projects in memory of Chris Farlekas, longtime Times HeraldRecord arts reporter and columnist, and Port Jervis native. Through his writing and his fundraising efforts he raised, throughout the tri-state area, over $4.5

April 29: Aerial Silks & DJ Sets

At certain points in the turning of the celestial wheel, humans have historically celebrated the change of seasons with communal gatherings for ritual performances and festivities.

For their take on a Rite of Spring, North American Cultural Laboratory (NACL) is partnering with SADDP (Seasonal Affective Disorder Dance Party), a collective of artists who produce eclectic dance-

centric events in the Western Catskills/Upper Delaware region.

The event will feature performances by aerial silks artists Hilary Chapman and Corinna Grunn along with DJ sets by Crystal Television and Catsilk

million dollars for charitable causes including hunger, domestic violence, homelessness and others. His work in the community earned him numerous “Man of the Year” awards and an Honorary PhD from Mount St. Mary College.

“We’ve been raising money for a few years via the Community Foundation of Orange & Sullivan, and the Fund Board is so happy that its inaugural donation is going to our dear friends at WRCA,” said Fund Chair Barry Plaxen. “And speaking of dear friends, who better to perform for the Chris Farlekas Legacy Fund’s first event than HIS dear friend and colleague, another Orange County arts treasure, soprano Julie Ziavras. Julie shares the spotlight with Orange County composer Steve Margoshes, composer of Fame-The Musical and other theatrical and classical works.”

“There seems to be a general theme of spring and pieces we love,” Julie told Barry. “We are considering songs by Faure, Duparc, Mompou, Grieg’s Vårenyour favorite lied (spring in Norwegian), Mahler, R. Strauss, Montsalvage, Gershwin, Kern and Margoshes; (French,

Catalan, German, Norwegian, English). I am opening with a ditty Steve wrote for me to the words of Shakespeare.”

Steve will also solo works of his own, two of which are “In the style of Faure and Satie,” he said. “Julie will sing at least two of my pieces, including a premiere I just wrote for her, In-Just Spring, from a poem by E.E. Cummings.”

The April 30, 3:00pm concert will take place on the Howard Garrett (1931-2020) Stage, (named for a dear friend of Chris’, Julie’s and Barry’s), at the Montgomery Senior Center, 36 Bridge Street. April 29: Jazz & Poetry at SUNY Orange

Music and Poetry complement each other naturally. So, when two friends who are award winners in their fields of music and poetry, respectfully, work together, a beautifully thoughtful performance emerges. Such is the event when musician/composer James Emery and poet Paul Kane present their collaborative program, One Art: A Music & Poetry Performance. Emery will be playing with his fellow members of the String Trio of New York: Rob Thomas on five-string violin, and Tony Marino on acoustic bass. In addition, veteran jazz drummer/percussionist Thurman Barker will join them to further enlarge the sound.

In 1977, Emery formed the String Trio of New York which brought the genre-busting sounds of chamber jazz to the forefront. JazzTimes observed, “No individual or ensemble has done more to demystify chamber jazz, and to

realize its potential for warmth, sensuousness, and beauty...than the String Trio of New York.”

Paul Kane is a poet, critic and scholar. Awards for his work include Fellowships from the National Endowment for the Humanities, the Guggenheim Foundation, the Bogliasco Foundation, and a Fulbright Award. His poems are cerebral and emotional in equal measure. Kane is a professor of English and Environmental Studies at Vassar College.

Come to Kaplan Hall, Grand & First Streets, Newburgh, on April 29 at 7:30pm for a sure-to-be memorable evening of music and poetry. Kaplan Hall is situated on a bluff overlooking the Hudson River and the Great Room has two walls of glass offering full view of the river.

“Resilience”in Livingston Manor

Resilience is a onehour documentary that delves into the science of Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) and the birth of a new movement to treat and prevent Toxic Stress. Now understood to be one of the leading causes of everything from heart disease and cancer to substance abuse and depression, extremely stressful experiences in childhood can alter brain development and have lifelong effects on health and behavior.

Resilience: The Biology of Street and the Science of Hope chronicles the promising beginnings of a national movement to prevent childhood trauma, treat Toxic Stress, and greatly improve the health of future generations.

“When I started hearing about the emerging science of adversity and childhood stress, my mind was blown. High “doses” of stress during childhood get into our bodies, change

“Art Along the Fence”

Art Along the Fence is an urban outdoor art event. Located along the front of Washington’s Headquarters in Newburgh (pictured), it will have artworks from Newburgh area artists.

This display is part of the larger event Spring into Newburgh which is organized

by the Shop Downtown Newburgh group. Along with art, there will be small business shopping, a health and wellness fair, and activities that draw attention to the history of the neighborhood.

The event is on Liberty Street, May 13, from Noon to 5:00pm

Wurtsboro Art Alliance: May Show

our brains, and lead to lifelong health and social problems - everything from domestic violence and substance abuse to heart disease and cancer. Who knew that if your parents got a divorce when you were growing up, you have a significantly higher risk of heart disease? Or that if your mother had a drinking problem, your own risk for depression in adulthood is much higher? The science of Toxic Stress and the major findings that came out of the Adverse Childhood Experiences Study should be common knowledge public health information. But the movement is still in its infancy,” stated director, James Redford.

Elly Knieriemen, a long time teacher/coach and digital photographer, has been a member of the Wurtsboro Art Alliance (WAA) since 2012.

“I spent 44 years loving my job teaching history to students in Goshen High School,” says Elly. “I discovered a love for the Bashakill while coming home from work to South Road for 32 years and walking its trails.

“My first trip out into the Bashakill in a kayak in 2006 sent me on a peaceful journey of digital photography and a new found stewardship for nature in Mamakating. I have taken thousands of pictures and have only scratched the surface of all the wonders to discover near this unique wetland.

“My pictures have been taken on point and shoot cameras (Canon SX 40, 50 and 70) and except for an occasional “crop”, what I see is what I print and present. I have done educational slide presentations of my photos, and also as part of the

programs created by the Mamakating Environmental Education Center

Cornerstone’s 2023 Season Begins

At age 83, Jerry Mayer, a highly successful television writer and producer for hit television shows such as M*A*S*H, All in the Family, The Bob Newhart Show and The Mary Tyler Moore Show is still going strong.

Since 1986, he has been writing plays, most of them comedies, which have been staged in Los Angeles, offBroadway, and around the country and abroad.

“You know, it’s always nice when you have opposites meeting in a romantic comedy,” Mayer said. “As I wrote the play, I drew from stuff in my life.”

Mayer’s career as a comedy writer for television was launched in 1966, when he met TV comedian Jerry Lester, known for having hosted the first late-night comedy and variety program, Broadway Open House, in the early 1950s.

He took the initial step toward a career as a playwright in the mid-1980s, while working as executive producer of the hit TV series, The Facts of Life Cornerstone Theatre Arts (CTA) has

announced the opening play of its 2023 season: 2 Across by Jerry Mayer

Two strangers, a man and a woman, board a San Francisco BART train at 4:30am. They’re alone in the car, each is married, and both are doing The New York Times crossword. She’s an organized, sensible psychologist. He’s a free-spirited, unemployed ad-exec. This starts an 80-minute ride with intriguing and entertaining results.

Directed by Sara Johnson, with Tech Design by Victoria Cottone, CTA is featuring two of its stalwart thespians in the leading roles, Evelyn Albino and Mark Von Oeson

The production is sponsored by The Goshen Public Library & Historical Society, and will be performed at CTA’s home base, the Goshen Music Hall, 223 Main Street, a 2nd floor walk-up theatre. Show dates are April 29 to May 14 Admission is FREE. Reservations are required by calling 845-294-4188.

Righteous Brothers in Sugar Loaf

Blue-eyed soul pioneers The Righteous Brothers are back with the string of number-one classics that the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame duo of Bill Medley and Bobby Hatfield topped the charts with for four decades.

Hatfield and Medley had contrasting vocal ranges, which helped them create a distinctive sound as a duet. Medley sang the low parts with his bass-baritone voice, with Hatfield taking the higherregister vocals with his tenor. His voice reached the register of a countertenor. Their most active recording period was in the 1960s and ‘70s, and, after several years inactive as a duo, Hatfield and Medley reunited in 1981 and continued to perform until Hatfield’s untimely death in 2003.

The Righteous Brothers now comprises Medley and Bucky Heard. Medley explained that it was a difficult choice to continue without Hatfield, saying “I’ve had a million fans hollering at me to keep the Righteous Brothers alive...I looked at a couple of guys, but you know, you can’t replace Bobby Hatfield, he’s the best in the world.”

Medley was previously acquainted with Heard and watched him perform at a tribute concert to Journey, after which

he realized that Heard was the only one he would consider capable of filling Hatfield’s shoes, also noting that he and Heard had good chemistry together. Medley approached Heard a few days later and discussed the matter, which ended in a coin toss that Medley won, resulting in Heard accepting Medley’s proposal.

Heard has since communicated that he knows he can never replace Hatfield, nor will he attempt to do so and that he intends to sing like Hatfield rather than sound like him.

SUNY Orange: Middletown Art Group 2023 Members’ Spring Exhibition

The Middletown Art Group (MAG) continues its celebration of its seventh decade of being an active organization with the 2023 Members’ Spring Exhibition. 100+ pieces are registered for the May 8 to June 14 display. The numbers of works and the diversity of technique and concept demonstrate the differences in the membership. The group is happy to be back in-person in Orange Hall Gallery. Artworks include paintings, drawings, photographs, collages, mixed media, and sculptures in various media.

The reception is on May 13, from 3:00pm-5:00pm The 77th anniversary will be celebrated with good friendship, delicious foods and beverages, and a selection of jazz, classical music, and show tunes played by pianist Bev Poyerd. At the end of the reception,

prizes will be awarded to exhibiting members. This year’s judge is highly respected local artist, Ward Lamb Show co-chairs are Jill Weltman and Denise Shelby Isseks. MAG was established in 1946 “for the purpose of exchanging ideas between artists, craftsmen, art teachers, and students and of providing an atmosphere in which to improve individual skills and respect for the efforts of others.” The organization continues that tradition and throughout the year sponsors demonstrations and lectures which promote the study of the arts.

Even though the name “Middletown Art Group” seems to give the impression of exclusiveness to Middletown residents, that is not the case as members reside in other parts of Orange County as well as Sullivan, Ulster, Dutchess, Sussex, and

Pike Counties.

Frederick Cook Society’s Drum Circle

When Dr. Frederick Cook first stepped off a ship in Greenland, he was greeted by Inuit natives who invited him to an evening ceremony of drum dancing.

A drum dance is an Inuit form of art that has been around for at least 4500 years. It had a multi-faceted purpose as entertainment and to solve interpersonal conflicts, and until Greenland was Christianized, the drum was the indispensable tool of the Angakoq - the Inuit shaman.

On May 21 at 2:00pm, the Frederick

Cook Society will host Inspired by Inuit, a drum circle, at the Sullivan County Museum, 265 Main Street, Hurleyville. The circle will be led by drummer Larry Steiger, who began playing drums at the age of 13 in a rock band at the Concord Hotel. Congas, bongos, djembes and all types of percussive instruments are welcome. Refreshments will be served & donations welcomed. Cornwall Library: Art by Judy Reynolds

Judy Reynolds is an artist who appreciates living in the Hudson Valley. Having lived the greater part of her life in Newburgh with a short stint upstate in Kinderhook and now residing in Cornwall, most of her work is centered on the Hudson River.

Judy’s works in oil and pastels are pure beauty. She is a landscape artist who especially enjoys capturing views of the land and the River for which the Hudson Valley is named, and “dreamy marshlands in Maine” during early spring and late fall. Her paintings highlight “sunsets, storm endings, and foggy marshes” and are enriched with the “changing colors of the seasons.” She paints en plein air as well as in her studio where she works and reworks as she seeks perfection in each piece.

Judy’s work is included in many private and public collections across the

country. She is currently represented by the Carrie Haddad Gallery in Hudson.

Laurie A. Guzda, director of Zoe Comes Home Playwright Melissa Bell writes plays that explore women’s agency as they navigate their power and repression. Co-writer on NACL’s Courage, she is a playwright and ensemble member with Farm Arts Collective (FAC).

Jess Beveridge, in the role of Zoe, has created roles with FAC and NACL Theatre, such as Tavern at the Edge of the World, Dream on the Farm, and Courage. She has also performed with Cornerstone Theatre Arts in Goshen, in Orwell in America and other plays.

Susan Mendoza plays Gloria, an artist suffering from depression. Susan is a founding member of the comedy troupe Up & Coming/Comedy Tribe, appeared in Narrowsburg’s Deep Water Literary Festival ’22, and is a voiceover artist for animation, TV and radio.

R. Scott Porter, another member of Up & Coming/Comedy Tribe, plays cousin Fred. A graduate of Pacific Northwest College of Art, where he studied sculpture and printmaking, he can be seen locally in his recurring role as Captain Lava with the Lava/Narrowsburg Volunteer Fire Departments.

Thomas Cambridge who has appeared in the Deep Water Literary Festival and performed in many film and TV roles, plays Randall Geoffrey, the neighboring art critic.

Going to my eye doctor is great fun. Instead of a bowl of Hersey kisses at the long receptionist’s counter, there are books authored by Dr. O’s patients. I always arrive early for my appointment and make a beeline for the books by collaborators Henry Beard and Christopher Cerf.

Beard is the founder of The National Lampoon and Cerf, a frequent Lampoon contributor but probably best known for the hundreds of songs he’s written for Sesame Street.

We are drowning in deceptive, camouflaged words and phrases. In their book, Spin-glish, Beard and Cerf expose the perpetrators and snap us out of our euphemistic La La Land.

Mysterious Murder in Monroe!

-Muddy Water Players (CTMW) has been performing in the Hudson Valley since 1978. 2023 marks the 28th year the allvolunteer company has performed at its home located on the grounds of Museum Village in Monroe.

The Playhouse at Museum Village is a fully functional theater complete with a 27’ wide by 24’ deep stage, raised seating, a professional lighting system and backstage support area. The company promotes itself as “Dessert Theatre”, serving a dessert buffet of apple pie, ice cream, cheese, iced tea, and coffee during intermission. Audiences have come to expect both a cultural and tasty treat with each performance!

The 2023 CTMW season begins with the Agatha Christie mystery, A Murder is Announced, first published in 1950, adapted by Leslie Darbon and directed by Steve Davis

Once again Agatha Christie delivers another whodunit hit, another of her fiendishly ingenious murder mysteries.

An announcement in the local paper states the time and place when a murder is to occur in Miss Blacklock’s Victorian house. The victim is not one of the house’s several occupants, but an unexpected and unknown visitor. What follows is a classic Christie puzzle of mixed motives, concealed identities, a second death and a determined inspector grimly following the case’s twists and turns. Fortunately, Miss Marple is on hand to provide the solution - at some risk to herself - in a dramatic final confrontation.

The cast includes Natalie Bronson, Grace Fang, Michael Gorse, Ethan Henkler, Stephanie Hepburn, Jo Larsen, Karyn Meier, Rebecca Nagle, Lee Schulz, Daniel Quesada, and Cynthia Topps.

Board of Trustees members contribute their time and skills to advance the mission of a public radio station that is a model of innovation, inclusion and creativity in the world of public broadcasting.

The Board of Trustees manages the Corporation and retains legal and fiduciary responsibility for its management; makes all decisions of policies; ensures compliance with Corporation for Public Broadcasting, FCC and other federal and

state requirements; sets strategic direction; and ensures compliance with Radio Catskill Bylaws.

The Board of Trustees meets approximately once a month and members are expected to serve on at least one committee and serve the organization in other capacities. Board members serve a minimum of three years and service commences in June 2023.

Veterans Repertory Theater (VetRep) continues its 2023 staged reading series at its popular 16-seat Parlor, which exists to bring professional theater to Orange County for low cost and accessible performances. Located in an 1890’s-era house in Cornwall, the Parlor is used to select and assess actors for its Veteran-authored plays currently in development.

The play premiered Off-Broadway at the Roundabout Theatre Company in 2012.

After a beloved grandfather dies in New York, leaving a treasured piece of religious jewelry that he succeeded in hiding even from the Nazis during the Holocaust, cousins fight over not only the family heirloom, but their “religious faith, cultural assimilation, and even the validity of each other’s romances.” Harmon had the idea for the play “after attending a service in which

grandchildren of Holocaust survivors were invited to speak.”

Haltman is a NY-based director, casting director, and producer. Her weekly ballet class is the highlight of her week. She is also an avid (gluten-free) baker with a penchant for reality TV.

Joshua Harmon is the recipient of two Drama Desk Awards for Outstanding Play and two Outer Critics Circle Awards for Outstanding Off-Broadway Play.

VetRep Artistic Director, Christopher Paul Meyer says, “We’re incredibly grateful and excited to bring such accomplished directors to play with us at the Parlor this year. We’ve been fortunate in our friends, and having such dedicated folks come up to Cornwall to help us establish a world-class theater is really a privilege.”

Artists Celebrate Fungi in Warwick

The Hudson Valley holds beautiful fruiting bodies of fungi year-round. Fungi makes for a never-ending subject of exploration in art and science as it is in every corner of our lives and in nature.

Museum at Bethel Woods’ 15th B-Day!

The Museum at Bethel Woods, located on the grounds of the 1969 Woodstock Festival, is excited to announce the opening of this year’s special exhibit, The Place Where Peace Happened: How Communes and Collectives Set the Precedent for Peace and Love at Woodstock, which takes a look at how communes promoted volunteerism and the value of personal action. The interactive and engaging exhibit will capture elements of ‘60s counterculture by showcasing the efforts and overall lifestyle of the various hippie communes that contributed to the historic success of the 1969 Woodstock festival. The exhibit will feature genuine

artifacts and replica structures, including large-scale wayfinding maps, information booths with specially-trained docents, an interactive experience, and newly inaugurated musician in residence Peter Negroponte, who will help program live-performances within the exhibit.

The Museum has been hosting special exhibits for the past 14 years, with themes ranging from unique artifact collections to diverse art galleries. “Wings Unfurled” - GNSO Captures Birds in Flight!

The Greater Newburgh Symphony Orchestra (GNSO) will capture birds in flight musically in a concert titled, Wings Unfurled under the direction of Maestro Russell Ger, featuring the works of five composers portraying the aerial adventures of winged creatures.

“Birds have long fascinated composers because they are the most musical of all animals,” said Mr. Ger. “After all, we refer to their communications as ‘song’. Respighi’s suite, The Birds, evokes the ‘olde worlde’ with source material being drawn from 18th century Baroque dances.

“By contrast, the Japanese composer Takashi Yoshimatsu writes an exquisite elegy to modernity: ‘I see a sky with transparent birds. With sad eyes they quietly look down on the human beings crawling around in an artificial forest below them.’

“Lending yet another perspective, Efrain Amaya uses the pulsating rhythms of his native Venezuela to depict the kinetic energy of birds restlessly swooping and diving. And to conclude, both the Scandinavian Rautavaara (in Cantus Arcticus) and Chinese-American Tan Dun (in Secret of the Wind and Birds)

weave actual recordings of birdsong into their works,” explained Mr. Ger.

Ottorino Respighi was one of the leading Italian composers of the early 20th century. His best known and most performed works are his orchestral tone poems which brought him international fame: Fountains of Rome and Pines of Rome. An important milestone in Respighi’s career took place when Arturo Toscanini asked the composer to have one of his compositions performed in 1918. Respighi picked Fountains of Rome. The concert was a huge success

and placed Respighi as one of the leading Italian composers, prompting the start of a longterm, though sometimes tumultuous, relationship with Toscanini.

The majority of Takashi Yoshimatsu work is triadic and contains simple, repeated progressions, or in some cases pandiatonicism (see page 2).

Efraín Amaya continued his studies in the U.S., and is now a well-known conductor and educator.

Einojuhani Rautavaara was the leading Finnish composer of his generation. His late style combined modernism with mystical romanticism. A leading figure of contemporary classical music, Tan Dun draws from a variety of Western and Chinese influences. He is the recipient of an Academy Award and Grammy Award for his film score for Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (2000).

Heather Bause-Rubinstein creates abstract paintings on found materials and reclaimed domestic textiles. The results come together quilt-like, with the intense layering of paint and fabric, interwoven with textures and thread. She sources materials from thrift stores: household linens, crochets, cheap designer scarves, and women’s business jackets, often favoring fabrics made in the 1970s and 1980s, the period of the artist’s childhood.

Melissa Zexter’s work combines embroidery with photography to explore memory and personal experience. Sewing by hand directly onto photographs she has taken, she combines the traditional, practical skill of embroidery with the modern and reproducible process of photography.

Photographers often face challenges sharing large batches of images or high resolution images with large file size. Book Talk in Huguenot

Goshen Art League member and local photographer, D.C. Anderson has a solo show at Griffith Realtors (226 Main Street) through June 30.

“I like to photograph faces. Eyes. Some of my best people shots were taken during conversation or during a move from one position to another,” says D.C. On a different subject matter, he explains, “I like how the light at dawn or dusk brings out the textures of barn wood that has suffered the effects of the sun and wind and rain. Flowers, however, are best photographed in apparent glory although I emptied a vase into a garbage can once and couldn’t close the lid before I took a parting shot. There’s something photographically interesting

about decay. Maybe that’s why I take so many selfies?”

The public is invited to view D.C.’s work Monday to Friday from 9:00am-5:00pm as well as Sat. & Sun., 9:00am-3:00pm or by appointment.

Across the street at their home gallery, Goshen Music Hall (223 Main Street), the League’s next exhibit, Blues of Summer, runs from May 17 to August 16 and showcases work inspired by the Summer season. The public is invited to view this show Monday to Friday from 9:00am5:00pm or by appointment. Interested parties may also make individual by-appointment requests to view the exhibit during off-hours by emailing goshenartleague@gmail.com.

The 1958 brutal murder of ten-year old Johnny Dudko rocked the city of Port Jervis and the surrounding communities. Reverberations of this event rippled across the country. Then there was silence as the incident was relegated to a historical footnote. Now the full story is told for the first time by someone who lived through it and experienced its impact.

Dave Shive, a member of the Port Jervis High School class of 1964, was two years younger than Johnny. They were both actively involved in the activities at the West End Reformed Church where Dave’s father, Vernon L. Shive, was the pastor.

During the book talk, Shive will introduce the audience to the cast of characters that produced this fascinating tale of misfortune. The book takes readers through the captivating journey of this tragedy which struck in the most unlikely of places.

What factors facilitated this crime? Was it preventable? The book follows the tortured journey of a deeply disturbed

individual to the banks of the Delaware River where he will have an ill-fated encounter with an innocent boy who deserved to live a long and full life.

Sense the shock and outrage of the parents of the young boy who were not informed that a despicable evil had descended upon their idyllic community.

This is also a hopeful story. From this unfortunate incident, there are lessons to be learned and insights to be gained. Discover why the miscalculations of doctors, hospital administrators, and police enabled this gruesome incident to occur.

Discover how redemption and deliverance can emerge from the ashes of heartbreak when Dave Shive, author of Madness At The Horn (published January 1, 2021) will present a book talk at the Town of Deerpark Museum, 25 Grange Road, Huguenot, on May 7 at 3:00pm. Fogotten Community in Narrowsburg

In the early 1950s, big band leader Noble Sissle (1889-1975) was one of the principals in the development of Lucky Lake Estates along Ten Mile River in Narrowsburg. With connections to the music and sports worlds, he brought famous friends to the area. Baseball great Willie Mays had a parcel of land in the development, and the area became

known for lively jazz music in the Lucky Lakes Country Club.

Gardening Books & Kids Activities

A special event is planned for the Friends of the Newburgh Free Library fundraiser this May.

The theme is Planting the Seed

A master gardener will be in attendance, ready to answer gardening questions. There will be fun activities for the kids, and many books about growing

flowers and vegetables, landscaping, designing & building garden structures, and sustainable gardening.

Back Door Books, located at the Montgomery Street entrance to the Newburgh Free Library, will be open from 10:00am to 2:00pm on May 20.

Forestburgh Playhouse Academy

announces Summer Programs for Young Artists, an exciting line-up of performing arts education opportunities this Summer! FBP Academy’s summer programs are designed to educate and enrich young artists who love to sing, dance and perform.

The Academy is offering two exciting programs this summer: the one-week Musical Theatre Intensive for 8-12 yearolds (August 6-12), and the two-week Theatre for Young Artists Musical Camp for 13-17 year-olds (August 14-26).

At the Musical Theatre Intensive, young artists will work with experienced instructors to hone their skills in singing, dancing and performing. The week will culminate in an original musical retelling of Hercules, performed for family and friends.

Theatre For Young Artists Musical Camp is a brand new program this year, designed specifically for older Young Artists. During the two-week camp, participants will work one-onone with working NYC-based directors,

choreographers and music directors to mount a full-length production of The SpongeBob Musical

“We are thrilled to offer these exciting programs to young artists in the area,” said Franklin Trapp, Director. “Our instructors are passionate about teaching and inspiring young performers, and we can’t wait to see what they will achieve this summer.”

Catskill Art Space: Duo Exhibition

Jennifer Coates is an artist working in Brooklyn and Lakewood, PA. She is the 2021 recipient of the John Koch Art Award from the American Academy of Arts and Letters, a 2021 NYFA Award in painting, a Fellowship at the Civitella Ranieri Foundation, and a Sharpe Walentas Studio residency. Her work has been written about in BOMB Magazine, The Brooklyn Rail, Art Critical, Hyperallergic, The Huffington Post, Smithsonian Journeys, and Art News, among others.

David Humphrey is a Brooklyn and Lakewood, PA based artist who has shown nationally and internationally. He has received a Guggenheim Fellowship and the Rome Prize among other awards. An anthology of his art writing, Blind Handshake, was published by Periscope Publishing in 2010 and a new monograph on his work by Davy Lauterbach was published in 2020. He teaches in the MFA program at Columbia and is represented

by the Fredericks & Freiser Gallery, NY. Both artists fuse heterogeneous ideas into a single image; crashing historical and contemporary themes into each other to draw out hidden longings, anxieties and perspectives. Each uses protagonists and locations to dramatize the vicissitudes of situated personhood.

Catskill Art Space (CAS) will host an exhibition of work by Coates and Humphrey. Each artist will utilize their own gallery for solo presentations, with a collaborative installation from the married couple in the center gallery.

The exhibition will be on view in the ground floor galleries of CAS, 48 Main Street, Livingston Manor, from May 13 to June 17

The opening reception begins with an Artists Talk on May 13 at 3:00pm, with the reception following from 4:00pm5:00pm

The Liberty Museum & Arts Center invites artists, musicians and others to participate in a June 2023 exhibition entitled, Reflections on Father

What does FATHER mean to you? Does it immediately bring up a favorite song? Do you picture a fond memory of being together? A place that he loved? A painful relationship? A sense of loss? What does it mean to you, personally? Fun you had growing up? Did he take you fishing? To the ball game?

The artwork will be on display at the

Museum in June as well as a concert of father-themed songs and a roundtable panel where people can share their memories about their fathers. Fathersto-be are welcome.

Mamakating Farmer’s Market Opens

The first Farmers’ Markets were held 5000 years ago along the Nile River.

The first Farmers Market in the United States was held in Boston in 1634.

The first Farmers Market in the Town of Mamakating (the first township in Sullivan County) was held in 2019. It has continued each Friday through the summer months since its inception. Marketgoers view the majestic Shawangunk Mountains rising in the east and watch the sunset over the foothills of the wildlife-rich Catskill Mountains rising to the West.

The Mamakating Local Development Corporation founded the market to provide fresh, healthy, locally-produced farm and home-produced products, and to help local vendors succeed to preserve our rural way of life and create economic sustainability. “Our always friendly vendors look forward to seeing you at the market!”

Six “B”s in Two Villages & One City

The Farmer’s Market is held every Friday from 4:00pm-7:00pm, May 26 to September 29, rain or shine on the lawn in front of Town Hall, 2948 Route 209, Wurtsboro. “Come shop and enjoy the musicians. We do have tables and chairs for folks, with umbrellas for warmer afternoons. People are always welcome to bring their own chairs.”

On May 26 enjoy Kurt Henry & Dog Knows, a dynamic four-piece north-country rock band composed of Kurt Henry, guitar and vocals, Cheryl Lambert, harmonica, percussion, harmonies, Alan Groth, bass, and Chris Cullo, drums. Their repertoire features artists of the 60’s and 70’s along with Henry’s eclectic originals that have made him a favorite opening act for almost 100 international artists such as Procol Harum, The Byrds, David Bromberg, John Sebastian, and so many others.

Orange County’s oldest continuously operating community chorus, the Warwick Valley Chorale is delighted to welcome Ron DeFesi as their new music director and conductor.

The Chorale’s 82nd annual Spring concerts will feature three performances. Accompanied by Gail Johnson, the 2023 concerts, entitled Three B’s, Old and New, will feature Beethoven’s Mass in C major. The program will also include works by Brahms and Bach, as well as selections by Leonard Bernstein, Irving Berlin, and Jerry Bock.

Beethoven had not turned to sacred music until late in his career. He received a commission from Prince Nikolaus Esterházy II in 1807, extending a tradition established by Haydn.

Trio Confero Perform Rarely Heard Classics for A Free Concert in Montgomery

Aleksander Vezuli, Artistic Director and Manager of the Grand Montgomery Chamber Music series (GMCM) has announced that the Trio Confero will conclude the GMCM’s 35th year of presenting free classical music concerts.

“Confero” is a Latin verb that means to bring together, unite and contribute, and this is precisely what Trio Confero’s mission statement was set to be in 2018 when three musicians united in one pursuit to bring together the unjustly rarely performed repertoire for clarinet, cello and piano. This is, arguably, one of the most beautiful chamber music combinations with singularly magnificent works written by such giants as Brahms, Beethoven, Bruch, Faure and Glinka.

The Trio is comprised of three exceptionally talented musicians who are alumni of Juilliard and Yale.

Maksim Shtrykov has been hailed by the Lucid Culture for “clarity that’s viscerally breathtaking” and “effortless... quicksilver legato.” As the recipient of the Artists International New York Debut Award, he presented his solo debut recital at Carnegie Hall in April 2007.

Anita Balázs has been giving concerts as soloist with conductors such as Andras Ligeti and Tamás Gál while

regularly appearing at “Les Pianos Folies du Touquet.” Balázs’ numerous prizes and awards include First Prize at the Antal Friss National Cello Competition and János Starker National Cello Competition in Hungary to name just a few.

Misuzu Tanaka was born in the U.K. where she began her piano lessons. She then continued her studies in Japan and in the U.S. with Martin Canin. Her Masters and Doctoral degrees are from the University of Michigan where she was a full scholarship recipient.

The GMCM program includes Beethoven’s Trio in B-flat major, Op.11: “Gassenhauer” (a colloquial archaic German word originally meaning lively pieces of dance music), Carl Frühling’s Trio in A minor, Op. 40, Brahms’ Trio in A minor Op.114, and Nino Rota’s Trio for Clarinet, Cello and Piano.

The key of B-flat major was probably chosen by Beethoven to facilitate fast passages in the B-flat clarinet, which had not yet benefited from the development

of modern key systems.

Brahms’ trio incorporates a considerable amount of arpeggio patterns in its theme, complemented by conversation-like passages in the upper register of the cello.

Carl Frühling (1868-1937) was born in what was then known as Lemberg, the capital city of the province of Galicia, a part of the Austrian Habsburg empire (what is known today as Lviv, Ukraine). For many years he enjoyed a career as an accompanist to some of the most important instrumental soloists and vocalists then performing, including such stars as Pablo Sarasate, Bronislav Huberman and Leo Slezak. Sadly, he died in Vienna in poverty.

Giovanni (Nino) Rota Rinaldi (19111979) was a renowned child prodigy. His first oratorio was written at age 11, his three-act lyrical comedy after Hans Christian Andersen, Il Principe Porcaro, was composed when he was just 13. Both were published in the 1920s.

A composer, pianist, conductor and

academic, Rota is best known for his 150+ film scores, notably for the films of Federico Fellini and Luchino Visconti. He also composed the music for two of Franco Zeffirelli’s Shakespeare films, and for the first two films of Francis Ford Coppola’s Godfather trilogy, earning the Academy Award for Best Original Score for The Godfather Part II. He composed ten operas, five ballets and dozens of orchestral, choral and chamber works.

An Evening of Theatre for the Whole Family at the Rivoli

“If there were just one clown left on earth, what would they do? How would she pass the time? Is there even a point?,” writes Ellie J. “The concept of the “last” clown intrigued and saddened me - as clowns, aren’t we always supposed to be funny? Inspired by observations of the world around me, I wanted to create a play that stared loneliness and fear dead in the face, but with the eager playfulness of a clown.”

And so, Fool: The Wanderings of the Last Clown on Earth was created. “The play follows the Fool’s normal routine of being stuck alone in a bunker, but clowns are never normal and on this particular day, something extraordinary happens. The show is colorful, fantastical, and, above all else, hopeful.

“Any of us can be a fool and all of us can find a reason to laugh, even if it’s against all odds. I have had years of literally clowning around the world, from my training in New York and Paris to performing impromptu shows in India and Japan. Fool, however, is the first

full-length show I have ever created from start to finish, so I am exceptionally excited to share it with audiences, and am thankful to Sullivan County Dramatic Workshop (SCDW) for giving me this opportunity. I have performed with them before as Miss Scarlet in Clue and Suzy Hendrix in Wait Until Dark. This is a dream-following venture and who knows where we will go from here!”

Fool is on the SCDW’s ‘evening of theatre for the whole family’ program with Simply Cinderella, a bare-bones, cut-to-the-chase re-telling of the classic fairy tale, fast-paced and flat-out funny.

The SCDW recently presented a program titled Creative Dramatics at the Benjamin Cosor Elementary School (BCES). This program was an introduction for 4th, 5th and 6th grade students to experience and participate in the theatre arts. Students experienced acting, memorizing, crew, tech, building sets, props, costuming, stage presence, dance, singing, ensemble work, stage direction, projection, stage managing,

theatre games and more.

Children performed Simply Cinderella for their fellow students at BCES and now they’ll bring it to the stage at the SCDW’s Rivoli Theatre in South Fallsburg when The Benjamin Cosor Players open the evening’s show with an overworked and under-appreciated Cinderella who swings her broom at the Fairy Godmother, thinking she’s a giant moth. Meanwhile, Queen Hobnail wants Prince Shubert to choose a suitable princess, but he would rather play video games than dance with a girl. This upbeat, slap-happy fractured fairy tale will delight performers and audiences alike.

“Spring into Art” in Port Jervis

Some pictures cultivate memories real or imagined. A carefully rendered watercolor painting entitled, The Family Camp by Daniela Cooney evokes that feeling. Her composition draws the viewer along a country road past the flowery meadow and trees, winding towards a cottage. Cooney’s intimate detailed rendering enhances the effect.

Elva Zingaro has departed from her usual landscapes in her new untitled abstract oil painting This is a strange forest...like looking at tree shapes up very close, blurring vision. Abstract paintings always have some figurative reference either in the artist’s mind or from the outside world, this one has the

natural colors of a forest.

By the Sea, a watercolor by Joyce Lee, presents an abundant seascape view of the sky, water and sand painted in a luminous color palette. A single bird flies across the expanse owning the space. Here, Joyce has departed from her intricate renderings of birds and botanicals opting for a wide impressionist composition.

In the Spring of 2022, Safe Harbors of the Hudson launched a new community Arts Program entitled MIX-XED Defined as a “contemporary mash-up of art & culture”, MIX-XED is a collaboration of professional musicians and students in the Hudson Valley. For its inaugural musical theater performance, Newburgh-based artists Elex Vann, Ralph M’Vore, and Neil Alexander guided the students in creating a contemporary performance piece combining Classical and Hip Hop musical genres.

Hip Hopera is a 3-act musical performance that premiered in August 2022 on the stage of the Safe Harbors’ Green in the City of Newburgh to sold-out crowds! The event featured live music performed by an amazing cast of high school and middle school children from the community.

Hip Hopera takes classic arias from well-known operatic repertoire and sets them to Hip Hop grooves. Featuring both sung and rapped vocals, the story follows a budding relationship between

two inner city high school seniors bound for college. The production was co-written by Elex, Ralph and Neil, with musical arrangements by all.

Shadowland Stages Kicks Off 2023 Season with World Premiere

The Board of Directors of Shadowland Stages announced that Brittany Proia has been appointed the theatre’s new Interim Managing Director.

Proia, a Hudson Valley based producer, director, performer, and educator, had been serving as education coordinator for the theatre. “We’re thrilled to have Brittany move into this position,” said Jim McIntyre, President of Shadowland Stages Board of Directors. “Her administrative and artistic experience reflects a remarkable skill set that will serve as the perfect complement to Brendan Burke, our long-time artistic director. We are confident that this new leadership team will usher Shadowland into a new era as we continue our return to pre-pandemic programming.”

Proia arrived in the Hudson Valley in 2017 to serve as the founding co-artistic director of Denizen Theatre in New Paltz. She also serves as Dramatists Guild Ambassador for Eastern New York, providing support and education to the region’s playwrights, and is a lecturer and guest director at the State University of New York at New Paltz.

Following her success in New Paltz,

Proia joined the Hudson Valley Performing Arts Laboratory as Executive Director in 2021. HVPAL is a women+ led devised theatre and arts education organization. Proia oversaw their accessible education program alongside Artistic Director Liz Dahmen and co-produced Performing Art (the devised, site specific collaboration with the Dorsky Museum in New Paltz), and the new musical cycle Shakespeare Unplugged by Scotty Arnold with Powerhouse Theatre in Poughkeepsie.

She is a proud member of Actor’s Equity Association, the Dramatists Guild, a graduate of the Ulster Leadership Development Institute, and a proud ‘key’, of The Ring of Keys, a national network of queer women, trans, and gender non-conforming artists.

She has produced and assisted in the development of new work with many theatre companies including the Voices of Women Theatre Festival in Tampa, Catskill Mountain Shakespeare and the New Georges Supported Production program. She is passionate about responsibly and sustainably creating theatrical work that fosters lasting social

change.

Co-produced with Great Barrington Public Theatre, Shadowland Stages will kick off the 2023 season with the world premiere of a thoughtful new play, Just Another Day, a heart-stirring drama written by and starring Dan Lauria, of

TV’s The Wonder Years (19881993).

Jaketown Road is a rock band born in Bethel that plays and jams on the music they love and grew up with in the 1960’s and 70’s.

In Three of a Kind, Holland Tunnel Gallery has brought together Gemma Kahng, Julie Lindell and Jacques Roch in an exhibit that addresses human and animal forms while discussing the complicated nature of beauty. While at first glance the works may seem very different, there is a connection amongst them that lead the viewer on a search of the unexpected and a dialogue of the relationship between works.

Kahng may be best known for her work as a fashion designer. Her paintings in this show are bold, bright birds and animals that continue her interest in innate beauty and ornamentation. She is the founder of the Beekman Arts Club that started in Hopewell Junction and is now located in Newburgh.

Lindell, an installation artist based in

Newburgh, stated, “The pieces for this show are also about physical beauty, but question both the value of that moniker and who gets to determine it.” Her work has been shown in the U.S. and Japan.

Roch began painting human figures again in the 60’s, although they appeared as semi-abstract signs and caricatural characters that popped from the painterly ground like knots of light or ghost-like figures concretizing space. A long time contributor to exhibitions at Holland Tunnel Gallery, the works on view are part of his estate and Paulien Lethen is honored to be able to share these works with the public.

The ARTery Gallery, located in historic Forest Hall, is a cooperatively owned and operated fine art gallery, serving regional artists and art lovers since 1996. Each month, the gallery presents a wide variety of work from new and established artists ranging from traditional oil, watercolor, and photography to sculpture, jewelry, textiles, pottery, and collage.

The Milford Garden Club has served the area for more than 85 years. Thirteen selected works from ARTery members will be featured side-byside with an artistic interpretation by Milford Garden Club members. To accomplish this, the floral arrangers will react to what they feel and see while viewing the art. They will take artistic elements in the selected works such as shapes, colors, patterns, mood, or the subject itself and intuitively create their own stylistic representation using flowers, branches, found pieces, an assortment of horticultural inventions.

Newburgh Chamber Music: Are You In Four Jazz?

Led by Newburgh native and bassist Jesse Breheney, the In Four Jazz collective, which can be heard performing in venues across the greater New York City region, will perform a Mother’s Day concert in Newburgh.

Jesse Breheney is a graduate of the Eastman School of Music and the Juilliard pre-college division where he studied jazz and orchestral music. He has been based in NYC since 2008. With a musical style that is deeply rooted in the swinging tradition of artists like Oscar Peterson, Miles Davis and Frank Sinatra, his music brings life to the American songbook and other jazz classics. Through the In Four Jazz collective and as a performer, he has been a key player in many ongoing music series in NYC.

Vocalist and songwriter Gabrielle Stravelli blends musical traditions with a modern, genre-bending sensibility. The rhythmic swing of jazz frames her original compositions while as an actor and storyteller she reinterprets the American songbook as well as works by contemporary artists as varied as Willie Nelson, Chick Corea and John Fogerty.

A Boston native, pianist Michael Kanan established a reputation in New York as a vocal accompanist. In 1996, he

joined the band of legendary singer Jimmy Scott, and in 2001, he became the accompanist and arranger for celebrated vocalist Jane Monheit. With her group, he has toured all over the world, recorded several CDs and DVDs, and made many TV appearances.

Legendary drummer and bandleader Billy Mintz, who at 15 was developing his musicianship with show bands at Catskills resorts, has performed for many years as part of numerous ensembles both in New York and Los Angeles. In recent years he has taken on new roles as composer and bandleader. He leads the Billy Mintz Band and the Two Bass Band, a ten-piece ensemble that features his compositions and arrangements. As a soloist, he has performed throughout the U.S. and internationally.

HV Jazz Festival Quartet, Port Jervis

Drummer Steve Rubin is the founder of The Hudson Valley Jazz Festival, coming into its 14th season, August 9-13, 2023. UpFront Exhibition Space will be a featured venue for the series.

Rubin received an Orange County Arts Council award for Best New Arts Organization in 2011, and is presently also working with August for the Arts, an organization showcasing Warwick’s rich art community with an event on August 5. (Stay tuned to August issue.)

J. Brunka is a sought after bassist on acoustic and electric. A music educator with a background that runs the full spectrum from classical to old style R&B, electronic, gypsy jazz and traditional swing, he works regularly with a host of different groups and is also a founding member of the improv group, Beyond Jazz.

Harkening back to a violinist whose freedom from slavery was bought in performance, Bill Ware’s place within American

music is best described as a proud lineage. Vibraphonist, bassist, composer, pianist, educator and creative adventurer, Ware’s genrebending career, well into its fourth decade, has been nothing short of riveting.

Joe Vincent Tranchina was voted “Hudson Valley 2010 Jazz Musician of the Year” in Times Herald-Record’s annual best of readers poll, and honored by the Lehman Center for the Performing Arts “Best of the Bronx” series with concert presentations of his original work, is an established pianist, composer, arranger, and accompanist.

What is a Gravikord?

The Gravikord is a 24-string electric double harp based on the West African kora and the mbira, invented by Bob in 1984. It is made of welded stainless steel tubing, with 24 nylon strings but no resonating gourd or skin. Grawi originally desired an instrument on which he could play polyrhythms more easily than on the guitar, and he refined the Gravikord’s design over several years to meet this goal. In 2018, the instrument was added to the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s (MOMA) permanent musical instrument collection.

Out of Africa: The Beat Goes On is a concert and lecture with the Duo exploring the history of the harp, a reprise of the program originally presented at MOMA when the Gravikord first appeared in an exhibit focusing on African influences in our present-day culture.

The program will blend history, visuals and a selection of world music (from Ireland, Africa, Eastern Europe and American folk), and original “new upbeat folk chamber jazz!”

It all takes place at the Goshen Public Library, on May 13 at 2:00pm Free admission.

Most people don’t see what’s actually there...

All they really see are just words.

That apple is red, those leaves are green.

But there are millions of reds and greens...

That apple in the sunlight is totally different from that apple in a kitchen bowl.

The leaves of the same tree are many different hues.

Sometimes they’re glowing transmitting light, sometimes they reflect it from their surfaces, other times they’re opaque and in the shadows...

Surprisingly, learning to accurately see is not easy, and in some sense it is not even natural...

But it is absolutely necessary to paint well, and Then, of course, there is the paint to deal with...

Eldred Preserve: The Bradstan Cabaret Season Begins!

After its triumphant 2022 revival, The Eldred Preserve’s esteemed Bradstan Cabaret Series returns with an exciting slate of new performers (and a few familiar faces) in 2023!

Jessica Molaskey plus special guest John Pizzarelli kick start the 2023 series. Called “the Astaire-Rogers of the cabaret world” by Time Magazine, the married duo’s charming onstage dynamic uniquely combines jazz and theater, including medleys of modern songs with original lyrics.

Jessica Molaskey is a veteran of a dozen Broadway shows, including the revival of Sunday in the Park with George, which was nominated for nine Tony Awards. She has appeared in A Man of No Importance at Lincoln Center, Parade (directed by Hal Prince), Dream, Tommy, Crazy for You, Les Misérables, City of Angels, Chess, Cats, and Oklahoma! She most recently played the role of Marie in the New York City Center Encores’ production of The Most Happy Fella

Jessica’s off-Broadway credits include Songs For A New World, Dream True, Wise Guys and Weird Romance. She has five critically-acclaimed solo CDs and has performed in concert from Lincoln

Established as one of the prime contemporary interpreters of the Great American Songbook, guitarist and singer John Pizzarelli has expanded that repertoire by including the music of Paul McCartney, Joni Mitchell, Neil Young, Tom Waits, Antônio Carlos Jobim, and the Beatles. In addition to being a bandleader and solo performer, John has been a special guest on recordings for major pop names such as Natalie Cole, Kristin Chenoweth, Tom Wopat, Rickie

Music for Mother!

Josephine LouisePublic Library will host a Special Mother’s Day Concert at the newly opened Anita Vandermark Community Center

Hudson Pro Musica will present Three Separate Worlds, highlighting works by Ignaz Pleyel (1757-1831), one of the most influential composers of the 18th century, and Sergei Taneyev, (1856-1915) a student and friend of Tchaikovsky.

The second half of the concert will offer familiar arrangements for string trios of popular and wellknown styles that will have you swaying in your seat!

The May 14 concert is at 2:00pm at the new Community Center, 97 Sherman Avenue, Walden. Free admission.

Wallkill River Center for the Arts: 15 Years of Art & Community

Unleash Your Inner Artist: 15 Years at the Wallkill River School, will be the featured exhibit at the Wallkill River Center for the Arts (WRCA). The exhibit will take a look back at and celebrate WRCA’s 15 years as an important and vibrant not-for-profit arts organization in the mid-Hudson Valley.

In curating the exhibit of photographs, artifacts, and articles throughout the history of the organization, current Executive Director, Sarah Fortner Pierson comments, “It is so interesting to revisit the early days. I’ve learned a lot about the history of the Wallkill River School that I didn’t know.”

Pierson, who was brought on in February of 2018 as successor to founding director, Shawn Dell Joyce, continues, “Our research underlines how dynamic the organization has always been. In its founding years the programs connected deeply and were very responsive to the needs of the community.”

With the change of the name to “Wallkill River Center for the Arts,” WRCA looks forward to expanding reach and programming in the region, with the conviction that it has a firm foundation upon which to grow.

In conjunction with the historical

retrospective, a second gallery will feature the exhibit BEGINNINGS: Works by Founding Artists. Artists who were involved in the earliest years have been invited to show more recent works. Pierson says, “Art isn’t static. It is constantly evolving and changing. We have invited our founding artists to illustrate that.”

The Party is WRCA’s annual fundraiser. Staff and members of the board invite the public to take a victory lap with WRCA and celebrate the amazing organization from its roots in plein air painting and art exhibits to the recent exciting expansion into the performing arts.

The entertainment component of the event has been enhanced this year, under the direction of WRCA inhouse coordinator of music events, Judi Silvano. The exciting line-up of performers includes, among others:

Additionally, there will be readings by local poets. Along with a meal and beverages, each guest will go home with an original work of art created and donated especially for the occasion by a WRCA artist.

The funds raised at The Party will support scholarships to summer and yearround art classes for area children; classes & programs for military veterans; and the very well-attended, free-of-charge, weekly Senior Citizen Drop-in sessions, among other WRCA programs.

Louise came to the Hudson Valley in 2004, where she became an active member of both the Middletown Art Group and Warwick Art League, as well as a signature member of the North East Watercolor Society. She began her involvement with the then nascent Wallkill River School as a core member of its mentoring group in 2007.

Vicki O’Neill, current organizer of

the Senior Citizen Dropin Workshop at WRCA, remembers her colleague Louise fondly: “Louise was an accomplished artist. Her watercolors were beautifully done. She was a good teacher, caring and generous, offering positive suggestions and help to her students. And she loved to go out for lunch after class.”

The exhibits will run from May 5 to June 25 with a reception on June 3, from 5:00pm-7:00pm

Small Wonders Invade Highland Falls

Highlands Arts Alliance (HAA) has partnered with Gracie Market to bring the public a new exhibit, The Small Wonders Art Show. This special exhibition will feature smaller works created by HAA members including Jay LeRoy, Karen Parashkevov, Angelo Marcialis, Lauren Hollick as well as other area artists.

A great opportunity to discover and support local talent, the show will feature a collection of drawings, paintings, illustrations and photography on viewand for sale - in the café throughout the month of May.

Isaac Lee opened Gracie Market (located at 447 Main Street in Highland Falls) earlier this year. A New York City native, he

moved to the Town of Highlands and took over the storefront from his parents. His concept of a “café market flex”, the combination of café and market, is a New York City staple that has been growing in popularity in the Hudson Valley. Lee would also like to bring some of that vibrant New York City art scene “upstate” and has expressed interest in hosting other local creatives and artistic events.

Georgian Folk Music in Warwick

Georgia is a transcontinental country at the intersection of Eastern Europe and Western Asia. It is part of the Caucasus region, bounded by the Black Sea to the west, Russia to the north and northeast, Turkey to the southwest, Armenia to the south, and by Azerbaijan to the southeast. The country has a population of 3.7 million people.

Dancing Crane is the oldest Georgian community center and repertory theater company in New York. The school offers master classes in traditional Georgian dance, music, and theater styles for students of all ages, and raises awareness of these traditions through world-class performances, while also addressing the needs of a growing Georgian immigrant community by offering educational programs for families and children, and providing a space for professional artists to practice and elevate their work.

The Amity Gallery is presenting an evening of song and dance by the Dancing Crane Georgian Theater Youth Ensemble. The seven-voice ensemble will perform Georgian traditional songs specially arranged by master Georgian

singer Tengiz Shautidze. The singers have worked with the Georgian musical theater class for more than ten years and have developed a sensitivity to the music and to each other that gives not only great pleasure but a nuanced performance that add to the inherent beauty of Georgian music. Special guests will be master dancers Tamar Tsivilashvili and Ilia Svianaidze and their students.

Support the Arts: “Hudson Valley Gives” - A Little Bit Here, A Little Bit There!

Hudson Valley Gives is a one day event celebrating charitable giving across the Hudson Valley. The purpose of this day is to create a solid focal point of fundraising for over a hundred nonprofits from Orange, Ulster, Dutchess, Sullivan, Putnam, Rockland and Westchester Counties. “Thanks to many sponsors, in-kind and cash prizes are awarded to participating organizations encouraging donors to give generously on May 17 to help their favorite cause raise more money,” said Elizabeth Rowley, President and CEO of the Community Foundation of Orange and Sullivan. Editor’s note: For those of you who are not in a position to donate large amounts to multiple organizations, one way in which to strengthen money coffers is by giving a small amount to as many organizations as you can.

For instance, if your budget dictates that you can donate only $200 for the arts, you can pick 10 organizations and give $20 to each. Or visit 10 organizations and give $50 each if your budget allows for $500.

Any amount helps. For those with smaller budgets, if 1,000 people give $5 or $10 to 10 groups it results in $5,000 or $10,000 per nonprofit. A budget of $500

A Trip to Italy

One of the most fascinating regions in central Italy are the hilltop towns. Montecelio is a very unique hill-town. Located approximately 25 kilometers northeast of Rome, the original infrastructure dates back to Medieval times. Throughout the centuries a castle, a fortress, and a church have been important structures in the town, representing ruling families and protection and peace through worship.

As an architect and a teacher, Andrew Warren has always been fascinated with history and longlasting architecture. He will present a detailed study of the history of town planning, a look at how the town developed over time, and how the town remains a vibrant, functional place.
