From The Publisher... by Barry Plaxen Once again, my heartfelt thanks goes out to Radio Catskill WJFF’s Tim Bruno and his Board of Directors for honoring local Sullivan media: myself, and my newspaper colleagues from Sullivan County Democrat, River Reporter, Shawangunk Journal and Manor Ink, along with Bold Gold Media, at a happy ceremony at Piccolo Paese in Liberty. The camaraderie present at the event solidified that the local media and the public all belong to the community as one incontrovertible entity. We are all here for each other.
Welcome back from the Pandemic: Sullivan County Chorus. Synchronicity of the Month: Major Art Center name changes: Wallkill River School is now Wallkill River Center for the Arts. Catskill Art Society is now Catskill Art Space. Highlights of the Month: Orange County Arts Council’s Gala in Rock Tavern, and Opera Center in Lake Huntington expands its scope with jazz/ funk/rock concerts and live theatre. In this issue: Dionne Warwick’s granddaughter sings in Montgomery. Write your name in Hieroglyphics in
Walden. A saxophone quartet in Milford, a doo-wop quartet in Middletown, and a Motown duo in Greenwood Lake. Poetry with jazz in Port Jervis. Plays by playwright Tom Dudzick in Ellenville and Goshen. Anne Frank in Monticello and King Tut in Walden. Liz Callaway sings in Eldred, and thespian/farmer Tannis Kowalchuk decomposes in Lake Huntington. Drag shows in Highland Lake and Montgomery, and drag brunch in Hurleyville. Eat your cranberries!

Monthly Quips, Quotes & Quiddities by Carol Pozefsky
KNOCK ON WOOD I had a superstitious mother who never bragged about my brother and me, fearing a sinister spirit known as The Evil Eye, might hear her boast and harm us in some way. Be that as it may, I do speak well of my two sons, often praising their high principles. A principle is a rule of conduct and ends with the letters P.L.E. The principal of a school, ends with the letters P.A.L. If you have trouble remembering the distinction, you might think of the school principal as your PAL. That memory assistant is known as a mnemonic device. SCUBA is a common mnemonic, helping us remember Self Contained Underwater Breathing Apparatus. SCUBA is also an acronym, an abbreviation formed from the first letters of a longer name or phrase. NASA is another well known acronym, It stands for National Aeronautics and Space Administration. For some reason I could never call to mind the name of English actor Albert Finney whom I greatly admire. “Didn’t he star in the movie The Gathering Storm, based on Winston Churchill’s memoirs?” my Godson asked. Yes,
he did. “Well, just remember Winnie, Finney?” (Churchill’s nickname is Winnie). That proved to be an effective mnemonic and ever after, retrieving Albert Finney’s name was as easy as pie. (a colloquial idiom and simile). THIS IS OUR PLAYROOM, NOT OUR BASEMENT! The euphemism is one of the most common of all literary devices. We substitute a gentler, more polite term for a word or phrase that may not be de rigueur or as comfortable. Instead of saying someone is cheap, we say they’re thrifty. We say a friend has passed away, more genteel than saying abruptly, dead. He’s not ignorant, he’s a late bloomer, she’s not large, she’s big-boned. Dysphemism is the opposite of euphemism, lesser known and commonly used in jest. It’s the substitution of unpleasant words for more stylish ones. Rather than asking the server for butter, you ask for ‘axle grease’. Rather than introducing your ‘loving husband’, you call him your ‘old man’. In place of ‘dear wife’, she’s your ‘ball and chain.’ So, rather than goodbye for now, hey, I’m outta here!

En Plein Air Celebration in Port Jervis November at City Winery, Montgomery In the 1800s, Western art was dominated by a few salons and academies, and painting was taught according to tried and true formulas. Jimmy Sturr and His Orchestra Jimmy Sturr and His Orchestra have over 117 recordings (5 Gold Records) and 18 Grammy Awards which puts them in the Top Ten list for All-Time Grammy Awards. At the time that Rock was reaching its crescendo, and in the era when Country was dazzling the nation, a strange phenomenon was taking place. In essence, this phenomenon was the rising popularity of Jimmy Sturr as the hottest musical attraction in the polka music field. The band constantly attracts crowds of screaming, adoring fans wherever their travels take them. The polka is NOT a Polish dance, as many have come to believe. The polka is originally a Czech dance and genre of dance music familiar throughout all of Europe and the Americas. It originated in the middle of the nineteenth century in German and Austrian influenced Bohemia, now part of the Czech Republic. The term polka possibly comes from the Czech word “půlka” (“half”), referring to the short half-steps featured in the dance. Today, Jimmy lives in the house he grew up in. His office is across the street from the high school he attended in
Florida. His hometown recently honored Jimmy by placing a Star of Fame in the walkway on Main Street. Downtown Florida also displays HOMETOWN OF POLKA KING JIMMY STURR signs at each entrance to the village. Jimmy and the orchestra have an extensive road schedule of 165 dates per year. They crisscross the country and make several international trips (and cruises) yearly. While on the road, they travel in Jimmy’s forty-five foot customized tour bus. But for one of their October gigs they will all commute from their respective homes on November 5, just up the road a piece, to Sugar Loaf Performing Arts Center for a 3:00pm performance. Don’t miss it! Tickets: www.sugarloafpacny.com

Heaps of Audience Participation
Heart-wrenching and hilarious, Every Brilliant Thing tells the story of a girl confronted with her mother’s depression, who, at age 7, begins writing a list of “every brilliant thing” that makes life worth living. Donna Jean Fogel This magical, uplifting show is “one of the funniest plays you’ll ever see about depression - and possibly one of the funniest plays you’ll ever see, full stop.” (Guardian, UK). Written by Duncan MacMillan with Jonny Donahoe, the play toured the UK before going on to hit runs in London and at the Barrow Street Theater in New York in 2015 (which was also filmed by HBO). With a soulful soundtrack and heaps of audience participation, the play “balances acuity and affability...with unobtrusive artistry... captivating...” (New York Times). The play is the first co-production between River Rep Theatre and Delaware Valley Opera, starring Donna Jean Fogel; directed by Arthur Aulisi. River Rep Theatre is dedicated to presenting the finest contemporary playwrights, innovative group-generated plays, and bold new adaptations of
classics. Donna Jean Fogel is an actor, director, deviser, and teacher. In NYC she has worked with The Barrow Group (her NYC artistic home), Circle Rep Lab, Arthur Aulisi Fourth Unity, Manhattan Theater Source, and Blue Light Theater Company. Dare to Teach: The Life & Legacy of Prudence Crandall (pictured above) with Carolyn Ivanoff tells the story of Prudence Crandall who began a school in Canterbury, CT in 1833 to educate Carolyn Ivanoff black girls. Crandall would be bullied, harassed, threatened, fined, jailed, and tried three times because she dared to teach. The school was victimized by the populace who contaminated the well and attempted arson. Ultimately the school was destroyed by rioters and closed. Connecticut and Canterbury recanted their positions and voted a pension to Prudence in old age, who would ultimately be honored and celebrated as the Connecticut State Heroine.

Write Your Name in Hieroglyphics King Tutankhamun’s tomb was discovered in 1922 by excavators led by Howard Carter. As a result of the quantity and spectacular appearance of the burial goods, the tomb attracted a media frenzy and became the most famous find in the history of Egyptology. Music on Market, Ellenville: “Gravity” An exploration of the inevitable experiences of life: love, loss, triumph, defeat, and transformation, Gravity (Marianne Osiel, Jennifer Maidman & Annie Whitehead - see photos) perform music that “invites us to celebrate being the beautiful walking works-in-progress that we all are.” Marianne Osiel is a songwriter/multiinstrumentalist from Santa Barbara, CA, whose songwriting voice evolved from her classical roots. She played oboe with the Nashville Symphony Orchestra for a decade while doing a plethora of recording sessions for other artists. She also sings, plays guitar, piano, and English horn, and has released three albums of original music. After moving to New York, she recorded and toured with the John Hall Band (Orleans), opening for Bo Diddley at the Bottom Line, and was guest solo artist with Nanci Griffith at the Blue Note. Jennifer Maidman is a platinum award winning multi-instrumentalist/ singer-songwriter/producer from London, England. A “complex musical creative” with a career stretching back
to the ‘70’s, she was a key member of the seminal Penguin Cafe Orchestra, and has recorded with artists such as Boy George, Bonnie Raitt, Van Morrison, Joan Armatrading, Gerry Rafferty and Mark Knopfler. Her solo album that was recorded in Woodstock, Dreamland (2018), is a riveting and inspirational personal musical journey. Born in Oldham, England (“the heart of brass band country”), trombonist/ composer/arranger Annie Whitehead has an international reputation. Her versatility and technical proficiency made her a most appreciated session musician and a reliable band member, providing horns for artists such as Eric Clapton, Doctor John, Elvis Costello, and Joe Jackson. Annie worked for years with the South African musical exile community in London during apartheid, and has released several solo albums. Rearranging Gravity, a concert, will take place on November 5 at 7:30pm for the Music Institute of Sullivan & Ulster’s (MISU) Music on Market concert series at St. John’s Episcopal Church, 40 Market Street, Ellenville.
Holiday Spirit in South Fallsburg The Sullivan County Dramatic Workshop (SCDW) is proud to partner with The Literacy Volunteers of Sullivan County to present a timely, moving and entertaining radio show entitled Peter Filichia Adam’s Gifts by Peter Filichia. A prolific author, Filichia is the former New York-based theater critic for the Star-Ledger newspaper in Newark, and New Jersey’s television station News 12. He has also written the liner notes for many Broadway cast albums, and he claims to have seen 11,000 performances in the theater as of October 1, 2017. Adam’s Gifts is a story of a greedy man who learned the error of his ways to find out that wealth is not the most important thing in life. If that sounds a lot like the classic Scrooge story, that’s because it is! But, the twist here demonstrates the mission of The Literacy Volunteers! SCDW’s director is Harold Tighe, and the players include Heather Strauss, Crystal Tweed, Lourdesa Hunt, Tom Brennan, Shawn Bailey & Treyvon
Hayden. Grace Summa is the Tech Director. Please note that this is a benefit performance, and all proceeds go to The Literacy Volunteers of Sullivan County (LVSC). Tickets are $10. The mission of LVSC is to foster and enhance adult and family literacy through the efforts of a corps of trained volunteer tutors and paid teachers who assist adults functioning at the lowest literacy levels. There is a pressing need for LVSC’s services in Sullivan County, as about one in five members of the population lacks basic literacy skills. Further proficiency in English as a Second Language for those who desire it is a provided service free of charge. LVSC also offers GED classes. There will be only one performance of this show on November 5 at 7:30pm at the Rivoli Theatre, 5243 Main Street, So. Fallsburg. For more information: www.scdw.net.

Sullivan County Chorus: It’s Elemental! Reveling in the glory of the season, the Sullivan County Chorus will return to the stage this November with a rich and soulful celebration of natural beauty: a concert entitled, It’s Elemental: Songs of Earth, Fire, Spirit, Water and Wind. The chorus has been performing since 1976, and after a brief pandemic-related break, returned to the stage this past spring and summer. This fall, the ensemble will feature a variety of composers, as well as one of Ralph Vaughan Williams’ masterpieces, In Windsor Forest, a cantata comprised of five musical movements that will take listeners on a delightful melodic journey. This cantata was adapted by the composer from music from his opera Sir John in Love. Comprising five choral songs, it features texts by Shakespeare and his near contemporaries Thomas Ravenscroft, John Lyly, and Thomas Campion. Composers of other works being presented include (and “represent”): Gregg Smith (The Elements) began composing around the age of 17. The world famous Gregg Smith Singers was founded at an all-Japanese Methodist church in California in 1955. Gwyneth Walker’s (Earth) music is

“Good Medicine”
America’s premier women composers of solo vocal and choral music. Raymond Murray Schafer (Water). “This is not your normal choral piece,” conductor Kevin Giroux told his singers. “Mixed with regular notation, you will be requested to sing pitches of your own choosing, as well as to ‘sing’ graphics printed on the page. This will be a challenge for us as we have never sang aleatoric music before. Aleatoric music is a form of music that is subject to improvisation or structured randomness. It relies on a composer making chance decisions while writing the piece, or more commonly, a performer improvising while playing a piece. I broke it down into small sections to make it more accessible. It will be very cool when we are all done with it,” he assured them. Lastly, a Navajo song representing Spirit. The concert is on November 5 at 1:00pm at the Church of the Immaculate Conception, 6317 Route 42, Woodbourne. The facility has ample parking and is handicap accessible. A free-will donation will be taken at the door. Suggested donation: $10 for adults, $5 for students. For information: www. scchorus.org or call 845-594-6786.
Richard Grunn’s original play Good Medicine is about the proliferation of the “Medicine Show” in its various permutations from the 19th century through today. Why do we look for the fast fix? The miracle cure? What is the lure of these Richard Grunn products and (in many cases) the men who sell them - products or pathways promising the keys to a better life? The play follows three characters. Each exists in and is representative of a different period in history from which they attempt to sell us their philosophy and associated products for health. The satire exposes the similarities between the characters, showing how today we fall for the same snake-oil salesmen as our ancestors, with their charm and allure, pitching absurd balms and practices which claim to heal and cure. Good Medicine, written and performed by Richard Grunn, is at NACL Theatre, 110 Highland Lake Road, Highland Lake, on November 19 at 8:00pm. For information, call 845-557-0694. For tickets, visit www.nacl.org.

He is the founder of Oceans 8 Films and the One Ocean Media Foundation, making films about climate at home in the Hudson Valley and around the world. His podcast, The Green Radio Hour with Jon Bowermaster has recorded over 150 episodes with environmental activisits, community leaders and friends from his vast rolodex of travels. Jon’s National Geographic-sponsored Oceans 8 project took him and his teams around the world by sea kayak over the course of ten years (1999-2008), bringing back stories from the Aleutian Islands to French Polynesia, Gabon to Tasmania, and more, reporting on how the planet’s one ocean and its various coastlines are faring in today’s busy world. He has written eleven books and produced/directed more than thirty documentary films. His documentaries include Dear President Obama, Antarctica, on the Edge, After the Spill and Ghost Fleet.
For the past several years, Jon and his One Ocean Media Foundation/Oceans 8 Films team have focused on a series of short films about the environmental risks to, and hopes for the Hudson River Valley, the birthplace of the American environmental movement. For each threat the Hudson River has ever faced, there’s always been a proportional force working to protect it. A cast of characters ranging from sailors to farmers to citizen-scientists emerge as heroes, tirelessly defending “America’s first river”. SLPAC: Sophie B. Hawkins & Paula Cole Sophie B. Hawkins burst onto the international music scene with her 1992 platinum-selling debut album, Tongues and Tails, which included the indelible hit song Damn, I Wish I Was Your Lover, and earned her a “Best New Artist” Grammy nomination. Sophie’s interest in music started as a four-year-old obsessed with drums. Her love of music and the need to connect with and through it came into her consciousness as early as second grade. “I really remember this moment so well,” Sophie reminisces. “I was living in New York, listening to Bob Dylan and I put on my father’s dark sunglasses and I started to cry underneath them. I said to myself, ‘I want to be that,’ and “that” was a song. I wanted to be a song. I didn’t want to be Bob Dylan. I didn’t want to be the voice or the instrument. I wanted to be the song, the need and the depth and the whole story of a song. It’s strange that I would say that now because I still feel like I’m living life as stories.”
Sophie has been tugging at heartstrings for decades with her powerful storytelling, crafting dizzying tunes that idle between the potently forlorn and the strangely comforting. Paula Cole released her first album, Harbinger, which suffered from a lack of promotion due to the label, Imago Records, folding shortly after its release. Her second album, This Fire, brought her worldwide acclaim, peaking at number 20 on the Billboard 200 album chart and producing two hit singles, the triple-Grammy nominated Where Have All the Cowboys Gone?, which reached the top ten of the Billboard Hot 100 in 1997, and I Don’t Want to Wait, which was used as the theme song of the television show Dawson’s Creek. She won the Grammy Award for “Best New Artist” in 1998. Hawkins and Cole will perform on November 11 at 8:00pm at Sugar Loaf Performing Arts Center. Tickets: www.sugarloafpacny.com.

The Basha Kill: Painting & Tracking Nature’s Glorious Gift!
The Basha Kill (a/k/a Basher Kill & Bashakill) lies in the valley between the Shawangunk Mountains and the Catskills, flowing south from ‘about’ Summitville to join the Neversink River in Cuddebackville below the wetlands, and on to the Delaware River. Animal life at the Basha Kill is not limited to birds. In fact, the diversity of habitats, and therefore species, is what makes the Basha Kill special. There are over 30 species of fish, including the rare blue-spotted sunfish and the ironcolor shiner, a NYS species of special concern. The marsh, with its slow-moving channel, is warm with low oxygen levels, thus home to species such as bowfin and bass. But several tributaries and cold springs support trout as well. In addition to the wetland, the area is blessed with many “borrow pits” and vernal pools with adjacent woodlands intact. These provide habitat for some of the 40 species of reptiles and amphibians in the area, including wood frogs, spotted salamanders, snapping and painted

In the early 1990’s, ospreys began nesting at the Kill, and a few years later they were joined by a pair of nesting eagles. Red-shouldered hawks, broadwings and red-tails may be seen courting in the spring. Screech owls, barred and great-horned owls are plentiful. Jazz Coalition Series at The Falcon
The Jazz Coalition was a vital artistic and financial support initiative for jazz musicians during the Covid-19 pandemic. The coalition was formed to manifest unity among the global jazz community at a time of mass unemployment, painful lost opportunities, and increased struggle in every area of life. “The idea to create the series stems from the success we have had now with the Sunday Night Jazz series I booked at The Falcon, which began in late February and runs through June 26,” said Danny Melnick. The Jazz Coalition launched its Commission Fund, awarding $1,000 grants to 104 musicians in support of new music to capture this moment and point a way toward transcendence. A new campaign funds the live concert performances and recordings of 15 previously commissioned artists and their ensembles at The Falcon.

The Grand Montgomery Chamber Music Series: Herd-Petrova Duo, Nov. 13 Violinist Geoffrey Herd leads a varied and impactful career as a soloist and chamber musician, artistic director, and pedagogue. He has performed throughout the U.S., Latin America and Asia at venues including the Isabel Stewart Gardner Museum of Art in Boston and Carnegie Hall’s Weill Recital Hall, as well as at universities and conservatories globally. He has performed concertos with numerous orchestras including the Rochester Philharmonic, the Thailand Philharmonic, the Cayuga Chamber Orchestra, the Ithaca College Symphony, the Amherst Symphony, the Finger Lakes Symphony, the University of Tennessee Symphony Orchestra, and the Longmont Symphony. Dr. Herd is on faculty at the University of Louisville School of Music where he has built a thriving studio. He plays on the “Berkic-Pennington” Carlo Bergonzi (no, not THAT Carlo Bergonzi - the tenor!) made in Cremona in 1737. Pianist Anna Petrova performs extensively as both soloist and chamber musician internationally. She has been the recipient of top honors and awards at numerous competitions, including the Queen Elisabeth (of Belgium) and Jose Roca Competitions, and has appeared
in recital in such venues as Carnegie’s Weill Recital Hall, the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, and the National Center for the Performing Arts in Beijing. She serves as the Geoffrey Herd Assistant Professor of Piano at the University of Louisville, Visiting Faculty at the Manhattan School of Beethoven Eugène Ysaÿe Music, and (1770-1827) (1858-1931) Visiting Professor of Piano and Chamber Music at Musical Arts Madrid in Spain. Beethoven’s Sonata in C Minor #7, Op. 30 No. 2 was dedicated to Tsar Alexander I of Russia. Reflecting an earlier sense of the medium’s instrumental priorities, Beethoven’s three Opus 30 sonatas for piano and violin were published as Three Sonatas for the Pianoforte with the Accompaniment of Violin. Which is not to say that the violin part is inconspicuous, but simply that it is conceived as a more lyrical foil to the piano’s dramatic
power. Eugène-Auguste Ysaÿe was a Belgian virtuoso violinist, composer, and conductor. He was regarded as “The King of the Violin”, or, as Anna Petrova Nathan Milstein put it, the “tsar”. His Poème élégiaque in D minor, Op. 12 is the first of Ysaÿe’s Amy Beach Richard Strausspoems string (1867-1944) (1864-1949) for instruments. Dedicated to Gabriel Fauré, it served as an inspiration for Ernest Chausson’s own Poème, Op. 25. Throughout his life, Ysaÿe wrote nine “poems”. Amy Beach’s Romance for Violin and Piano came relatively early in her career. It was composed in 1893 and dedicated to the then famous American violinist Maud Powell. Beach and Powell premiered the work at the 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition in Chicago. Richard Strauss began working on his
Sonata in E-Flat Major, Op. 18 in 1887, and finished it in 1888. It was during this time that Strauss fell in love with Pauline de Ahna, the soprano whom he would later wed, and his amorous feelings can be heard throughout the piece. It is noted for its lyrical beauty and its technical demands made on violinist and pianist. The Herd-Petrova Duo will perform on the Garrett Concert Stage in the Montgomery Senior Center, 36 Bridge Street, on November 13 at 3:00pm. Admission is free. Masks are requested. The Grand Montgomery Chamber Music Series, now in its 35th season with Aleksander Vezuli serving as Artistic Director and Manager, was founded by Montgomery residents and musicians Howard & Judy Garrett, and is made possible by the generous support of the Village of Montgomery, the Town of Montgomery, Historic Montgomery Association, Lawrence Ravdin, Evajoyce Davis and others. “Celebrate” by Robb Gomulka.
Artist Lisa O’Gorman’s Solo Show is the current Goshen Art League (GAL) exhibit at Griffith Olivero Realtors. Lisa grew up in Yonkers, and moved to the Hudson Valley in 1990. She always enjoyed painting, but it was a back injury many years ago that would enable her to explore her creative side fully, discovering that painting had the ability to help her tolerate the injuries by rehabilitating her mentally and spiritually. Lisa has an intense connection to nature that stems from hiking and camping extensively in the Catskills and Adirondack region even into Maine. When asked what inspires her to paint the scenes she chooses, Lisa replied, “I don’t always know why I stop at a particular scene or take a picture to paint

Shadowland’s Well-Made Play In 1943, Clara’s father had a vision of peace and the Blessed Mother while working in the family barbershop. To commemorate this miracle, he built a Tom Dudzick twenty-foot shrine of the Blessed Mother, which quickly became a beacon of hope to the neighbors, and gave prestige to the family as it grew into popularity across the country. As the play opens, a family meeting run by daughter Ruth - has been called to divulge her plans to go public with the family miracle by creating a one-woman play about the sacred event. That’s the plot. Remember plots? Plots were part and parcel of “well-made” plays. As was character-driven dialogue. Tom Dudzick’s play, Miracle on South Division Street, follows Clara Nowak, and her three grown children: Jimmy: a garbage collector, Bev: a ketchup bottler, and Ruth, a struggling actress, amidst the urban rubble of Buffalo’s East Side. The neighborhood is depressed, but Clara happily runs her soup kitchen and tends to the shrine to the Blessed Mother. What they do, what they say, (NOT

just conversation - mostly dialogue!), how they react to the unfolding of the plot drives the plot forward to the climax: Clara’s “catharsis” - another Brendan Burke aspect of the wellmade play (Thank you Aristotle). And subliminally underlining all the goingson, a message (this one of, arguably, great value for people of all faiths) can be taken home. Sounds serious, eh? Well, it isn’t entirely, as the very successful play is universally considered “hilarious”. And it is often performed during holiday season: included in the script’s publication is a guide for turning this play into a Christmas Play. And that is what Shadowland Stages has done! First performed locally at Shadowland in July 2016 (and by Cornerstone Theatre Arts in Goshen in 2017), audiences can once again be entertained, enchanted and enlightened with a new production directed by Brendan Burke to run December 2-18, on Shadowland’s Mainstage, 157 Canal Street, Ellenville. Tickets: 845-647-5511 or by visiting www.shadowlandstages.org.
