Publisher’s Column by Barry Plaxen Well, summer is on its way with warmer weather and lots of outdoor Arts activities including many free concerts sponsored by businesses and municipalities, some of which are listed in our calendars. Be sure to bring your chairs and blankets. Picnic food, too, if the time is right. Festivals abound, too, so be sure to check the calendar on page 15 for the list since we could not get them all into our Festivals story on page 10. Professional Theatre is beginning for the summer, so see our stories on Forestburgh Playhouse (pg 20), NACL Theatre (pg 29) and Shadowland Stages (pg 31). Spring Community Chorale Concerts began in May and continue through this month in Woodbourne (pg 26) and Newburgh (pg 3). In our efforts to cover events throughout our entire area, there are also stories for events in Westbrookville (pg 3), Amity (pg 21), Eldred (pg 8), Shohola (pg 9), Hurleyville (pg 6), Callicoon (pg 4) and Phillipsport (pg 21). The Greater Newburgh Symphony has its fourth and last “contestant” vying to become the new music director of our wonderful

symphony orchestra (pg 25). The Hudson Opera Theatre has a truly unique event - opera in the round, with a champagne party and waltzing as the orchestra plays on (pg 22). Speaking of unique, the village of Goshen will be displaying pianos painted by local artists (pg 7). Broadway (Annie) and TV (Angel from Hell) star Jane Lynch is coming to Sugar Loaf for a fundraiser (pg 24) One of our esteemed writers, J.A. DiBello has informed us of a very important film to be shown at Downing Film Center in Newburgh for which his daughter is a co-producer. Note: tickets must be purchased online in advance (pg 11). TheArt Galleries continue to offer us exhibits that truly run the gamut - from ceramics, drawing, painting, sculpture, printmaking, design, crafts and photography to Renaissance art, Baroque art, Impressionism, Symbolism, Expressionism, Cubism and Conceptual art. Last, but not least, is a fantastic example of textile art in Sugar Loaf, so large that our picture does not do it justice (pg 23). It needs to be seen in person! So, Go! Look! Listen! Enjoy!

Letters to the Editor Hi Sophia, Age shall not wither, nor custom stale, the infinite variety of CANVAS. I opened the last issue, and there, in the middle of articles about art and music and history, is a recipe for s**t on a shingle, a.k.a. chopped beef on toast. My husband said it brought back memories (not especially fond ones) of meals in his college cafeteria. Actually Douglas Frey’s version sounds pretty good; the seasonings he suggests ought to give the beef some zest. Thanks, Douglas! I’ll make this dish on Armed Forces Day and let you know how it turns out. Cheers, Judith Wink, New York City

Dear Barry, I got a copy of CANVAS in the Goshen diner. It looks GREAT!!!!!! I love it! It made me think of how much I miss writing my column! The Blackfeather Retreat’s First Friday event for June is an invitation to all for An Evening in Paris where you can experience a surreal evening as you return to fin de siècle Paris (at the end of the 1800s) and enjoy the “Absinthe Café”. Watch a screening of the first music video ever produced: MacArthur Park (circa 1965). Try your skill and imagination and play Exquisite Corpse. Catskill Art Society: Varied Art in June “Bare Bones” - June 3-26 What invites more contradictory feelings? We revere skulls and bones but they also frighten us. They are grotesque reminders of our own mortality and vivid symbols of death, and yet, the stuff of comedy, too. Whether treated or perceived as comical or macabre, human bones make us uncomfortable. Fossils are another story. We are fascinated with fossils, which represent a faraway world where wondrous creatures lived. They evoke the passage of time and its imprint on the material world. In Bare Bones, artists react to all of these different aspects: cultural, social, aesthetic, of human, animal, and prehistoric bones. Curated by artists Elizabeth Ennis and Naomi Teppich, this show features
drawings, paintings, sculptures, a hand-made book, and photographs at the Catskill Art Society’s (CAS) Laundry King, 65 Main Street, Livingston Manor. Meet the artists at the opening reception on June 3, from 5:00pm8:00pm. The exhibit can be viewed Saturdays and Sundays, from Noon-6:00pm. Tara Kopp: “With Amazing Scenes like These” Jenna Lucente: “Limited Landscapes” June 25 - July 24 Both artists are observers of the human condition, though the lenses through which they make their observations are very different.

“Run Red Horse, Run” by Jenna Lucente

“Lullaby” detail by Tara Kopp

Tara Kopp paints miniature objects, specific enough to depict what they represent, yet in their ambiguity they convey a universality of human existence. The objects in her paintings model the American dream, but that dream is contrasted with the prosaic tasks and emotions embodied in the paintings. The works are glimpses of a scene or fragments of a narrative and are fictional constructions of specific moments in time. Nature is at odds with the subjects in the paintings of Jenna Lucente. Her work portrays a moment of tension between animal kingdom and the natural environment due to ongoing human interference which challenges the animal’s role in nature. The June 25, 4:00pm-6:00pm reception will include an artist talk at 3:00pm. See ad below for CAS address and phone.

Filmmaker’s Art in Ellenville

After years as a filmmaker and painter in NYC and NJ, Barbara Gordon moved to the Hudson Valley. This change has strongly influenced her work. Being directly in nature and living along a rail trail, she strives for a synthesis of pure abstraction with the concrete, specific images of nature, animals, and people that have interested her since childhood.

“Two Cows” by Barbara Gordon

Her film about world hunger, Edge of Survival, received the first World Hunger Media Award at the United Nations and is part of the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art. Kate Horan’s paintings are influenced by the early to mid-20th century Modernists. Faces, the placement of hands and evocative gestures are her passion. Branching off from traditional “Red Suspender“ styles, her figures are by Kate Horan abstracted; her space, flattened. Bold lines, loose brushwork and vivid colors give her work expressiveness and sensuality. Horan did graduate work in fine art at SUNY/Buffalo, and studied at the Art Students League and the School of Visual Art in New York City. Madeline Tully’s artwork is reminiscent of the Old Masters and the Impressionists.

Studying watercolor and oils in New York and Milford, her portraiture feels romantic...as if rooted in another era. Tully’s florals and landscapes are fluid and transparent - she Artwork succeeds in making by Madelaine Tully watercolors the visual equal of oil painting. The different approaches used in each artist’s work provide a contrast that reflects how art is dynamic and ever changing over time. As a result, this exhibit, running from June 7-July 4 at the ARTery Gallery, has something for everyone! A reception will be held on June 11, from 6:00pm-9:00pm. For information, call 570-409-1234.

Meet Me In The Library by J. A. Di Bello Meet Lakshmi: A 13-Year Old Prostitute In an agrarian society, there is but a limited number of seats at the dinner table. In a third world country and especially as this generalization applies to the female gender, the issue becomes literally a matter of life, death and servitude. As a social problem, not to mention moral deficiencies of seemingly insurmountable portions, these are determining details in the life of Lakshmi, a bright, articulate 13-year-old girl from a small and scenic farming village. Her home is a picturesque place, surrounded by towering Himalayan meadows and lush elephant grass. As for the young pubescent Nepali girl, her adventure is now exposed and recorded for all to digest and for some to react. Agriculture, as a means of sustaining life, is and has always been slave to the elements. The mountainous regions of Nepal, the home of Lakshmi, is no exception. The family, a diligent and caring mother Ava, an irresponsible handicapped, addicted stepfather are devastated by drought and flood, as the ever-present lure of a distant city provides visions of deliverance. Always a willing member of the family, Lakshmi is pleased to learn that she can gain employment in the distant city, as maid to a wealthy family. Arranged by her devious stepfather, the earnings will provide the life-

line her family so desperately needs. She will be a maid for a wealthy woman in a city, in a house, a house called Happiness House. Unknowingly, Lakshmi has been sold into slavery. Her freedom lost, she will now be a whore in a Kolkata brothel! Childreach chief executive Firoz Patel recently said, “Twenty thousand children every year get trafficked in Nepal, and there are 200,000 young girls currently in brothels in India forced to work as human sex slaves.” This disturbing number of children literally sold into slavery in South Asia is not an issue to be relegated to history class discussions aimed at assigning blame. Slavery is a current event! It is estimated that today there are more slaves in bondage than at any other time in history of mankind. Patricia McCormik is a two-time National Book Award finalist and has written five critically acclaimed novels, including I am Malala, the story of the Pakistani girl who was targeted by the Taliban for standing up for education. Through her research and personal contact with three victims, she has developed a deep and personal commitment to the issue

of child slavery, especially those young girls that are sold as sex slaves. To this end she is personally determined to uncover the plight of Napali women through her creation of Lakshmi, and Lakshmi’s unforgettable journey in the novel, Sold. Its publication stands as only the initial step in the process of shedding light on a well-traveled and horrendous path taken by so many. Since its inception, the art of cinema has been able to present ideas and issues in various forms of persuasion. From relating specified events to acting as a committed advocate for various causes is a natural fit for film. SOLD as cinema has been able to present issues of domestic and global concern. The issues of Lakshmi’s plight are brought to life through a series of stimulating first-person vignettes each designed to chronologically relate the story from a small farming village in Nepal to the horrors of forced prostitution in India. Visit www.soldthemovie.com/trailers/ Director Jeffrey Brown’s comments on his personal involvement in the transition from novel to cinema is enlightening in its own

right. He revealed his personal motivation. “My father is a pediatric epidemiologist and he’s spent his life in war zones helping children in refugee camps. I’d always wanted to make a film that would affect real children’s lives and when I read Sold, I knew I’d found what I was looking for. I was literally moved to tears a number of times while reading it. We optioned it the next day!” What emerged from the combined efforts of writers, directors, designers and producers is not simply a film. In the interest of transparency, note: This writer’s daughter is an Associate Executive Producer of SOLD, Laura M. Di Bello. Most notably the work is the spearhead of an awareness crusade, an offensive maneuver designed to battle the dark process of selling human beings into slavery for sex and or labor. As a specific medium, it is “designed as a vehicle of change,” quipped director Jeffery Brown. “We want people to be a part of the solution.” SOLD will have a screening at the Downing Film Center, 19 Front Street, Newburgh, on June 13 at 7:30pm. The film is part of the TUGG events for films. In order for the film to be shown, 45 tickets must be sold. Tickets must be purchased before June 6 through the TUGG website at: www.tugg.com/events/114712

Narrowsburg: Counterclockwise Ensemble

Counterclockwise Ensemble is comprised of virtuoso musicians on violin, cello, string bass, acoustic guitar, and percussion playing original pieces that are a unique blend of classical, world/folk, Americana, and rock music. Their sound is fun and fresh, dynamic and accessible. Equally at home in a variety of genres, the group primarily plays the compositions of guitarist Rich Stein, sprinkling in pieces by Holst, Copland, Mozart, and Brahms as well as traditional American tunes into their sets. “The Counterclockwise Ensemble is genre-crossing, boundary-bending modern music made fearlessly fun again. It sounds very difficult to play, but they do it in a way that is very easy to listen to. It’s ambitious, complex and pure music that sounds very much like a modern string quartet in a blender set to ‘jazz-fusion’. Before too long, even the blender gets wobbly as they spiral (counterclockwise), boldly pulling classical, hard rock and Celtic music into the vortex,” says Walt Sargent, Director of the Island Songwriter Showcase from Long Island.

Listen to the Counterclockwise Ensemble for a unique experience that combines the intimacy and instrumentation of chamber music with the energy and vitality of a rock concert. Evoking the mood and spirit of both European and American classical masterpieces, the Ensemble will take you on a sonic journey that draws much of its inspiration from the natural beauty of the American landscape in full bloom and the hearty music of its people in celebration. The ensemble includes Rich Stein (guitar), Andrew and Rebecca Perea (orchestral strings), Glen Saunders (double bass) and Jim Mansfield (percussion), and they are coming from Long Island to perform their contemporary take on American chamber music on June 11 at 8:00pm in the Tusten Theatre, 210 Bridge Street, Narrowsburg. Doors open at 7:30pm. A wine bar is available before the performance. Trestle, Inc: Engravings of Love

“Over the past several years, my family has purchased these sidewalk bricks, many bricks. Most of them carry the names of young people, some very young. We come down to the waterfront with the grandkids and show them their names engraved in bricks, set in the walk, here on the waterfront in Newburgh. They sense they are a part of something. I like that. “When my and my wife’s parents and their parents made their life here in Newburgh, bricks were part of the fabric of this area. The brickyards were just north of here. The barges and trains that carried Newburgh bricks across the region coursed the ground and water in our view today. Those bricks were commerce, building and progress. “Setting the names of our family in the bricks set in the walk in this landscape in Newburgh is an affirmation that there is energy and promise here; that progress, improvement and hope persist, solid and lasting - like a brick. “Our bricks are a statement of patient belief in Newburgh and its citizens. That’s why I like our bricks.” Joseph Catania at a past Bricklaying Ceremony.

This year’s “Day of Bricklaying” will honor Joseph Catania and his family. In addition, 2016 buyers of bricks will be invited to breakfast at Blue Point Restaurant on the waterfront. The bricklaying, donated by Quality Lawn in Newburgh, takes place at a formal red carpet unveiling in October. New 2016 bricks must be ordered by July 30, so you have time to “compose” a brick to express your feelings, to engrave a lasting sentiment and celebrate someone or a pet that you love, for the Historic Brick Walkway. The Walkway, created by Trestle, Inc. which was founded by Reverend William Scafidi in 2003 to promote the arts and artists, heritage and culture in Newburgh, has a “Regular” section, a “Heroes” section and, new last year, a “Pets” section. You can even order a second brick to bring home. To order one or more personalized bricks that express your feelings, visit www.trestle. org or call 845-565-1052. On June 4, Trestle, Inc. is having a fundraising Bus Tour/Casino Party to Mohegan Sun in Wilkes-Barre, PA. Cost is only $40. For reservations: 845-565-0844.

Queen of the Hudson: Cello Sonatas

“I was fortunate to have the privilege to collaborate with Philip Glass on his first ever solo string piece, Songs and Poems, written for me in 2007,” stated cellist Wendy Sutter (photo left) at a recent Bethel Woods concert. (The recording has been critically acclaimed and continues to sell about 10,000 downloads a year. To date, it has sold 85,000 downloads, a huge number for a classical record). “He has now written a second cello suite for me which I will perform

and record next season.” Sutter will perform Songs and Poems and pianist Olga Vinokur will join her for Rachmaninoff’s Cello Sonata for the Queen of the Hudson chamber music series at Atlas Studios, 11 Spring Street, Newburgh on June 4 at 7:00pm. Tickets at the door or for discounted advance tickets, visit www.queenofthehudson.org Parking is available at the Studios, and on Spring and Liberty Streets.

The British colonies in America had many problems with the home country that governed them. One of the first and worst was the law passed by the British Parliament in 1765 requiring the colonists to pay a tax on every piece of printed paper they used, including legal documents, licenses, newspapers - even playing cards. This law was known as the “Stamp Act.” In 1774 Parliament adopted five more laws further limiting the colonists’ independence: four of them passed as punishment for the 1773 political protest known as the Boston Tea Party. The new laws so outraged the colonists that they became officially known as the “Intolerable Acts,” and were among the final sparks that ignited the Revolutionary war.

The collection of historical documents on display at the Karpeles Museum through August 31 includes the signed register of delegates to the 1765 New York Congress that drew up a petition to King George III and the Parliament to repeal the Stamp Act, the official hand-written instructions signed by King George enforcing the Quartering Act in 1767, and a manuscript of a 1767 law taxing the importation of slaves signed by governor of New Jersey William Franklin, son of Benjamin Franklin, among many other significant historical documents. Admission is always free at the Karpeles Museum, 94 Broadway, Newburgh. For information, phone 845-569-4997.

British Laws that Led to American Revolution

Ellenville Library Day! In 1966, Ellenville Public Library’s (EPL) charter was legally changed to reflect their commitment to local history, a valuable addition to library services. “Museum” was added to the name; thus, EPL&M as we now know it was created, and local history collections were formally itemized and indexed. Nearly all of these collections were and are built by community donations. 50 years later, they’re celebrating the museum’s Golden Anniversary. EPL&M will celebrate Library Day with living history activities, museum tours, a huge used book sale, face painting and crafts for kids and a small selection of historic books and ephemera for sale on June 4, from 10:00am-3:00pm. Join Shawn Dell Joyce for a Plein Air workshop on Library Day. Meet at the library at 9:00am, and then paint a local scene. Works will be displayed for a silent auction from Noon-3pm; 50% of the proceeds will benefit the museum at EPL&M. And don’t miss Portraits of Ellenville on June 29 at 6:30pm when Town of Wawarsing Historian Bucky Green will paint an interesting (and surprising!) picture of the people who made Ellenville history, based on Images of America, Ellenville. All events are free, and all are welcome! The EPL&M is located at 40 Center Street, Ellenville. Call 845-647-5530. Stay tuned for even more special events at EPL&M throughout the anniversary year!

May I Have A Word With You ... Quips, Quotes & Quiddities with Carol Pozefsky GET THE ‘L’ OUT OF HERE! Which is the correct spelling: cancelled or canceled? In British usage, cancelled; American usage, canceled. The Brits double the ‘l’ when spelling levelled, libelled, quarrelled and travelled. We write leveled, libeled, quarreled and traveled. Wouldn’t you know? There are exceptions to the rule. Both Yanks and Brits agree on the double ‘l’ in annulled, controlled, and patrolled. WHO WAS ABBY SINGER? Abner (Abby) Singer was a veteran assistant film director whose name became a generic term meaning the 2nd to last film shot of the day. For years, Hollywood film crews would ask Singer how many shots were left before the end of the shoot. Singer would shout, “This and one more and then we’re moving.” This advance notice would give the crew a chance to wrap up their gear, call for transportation and exit efficiently. To this day, the 2nd to last shot is known as an Abby Singer. By the way, the last shot of the day is called the ‘martini shot’ so named because the next

shot would be out of a glass; a post-wrap drink. CLARIN-ETYMOLOGY The word ‘clarinet’ comes from the French ‘clarine’ meaning ‘little bell’. Despite its French name, the clarinet is said to have been invented in 1700 by J.C. Denner of Nuremberg, Germany. ‘Piccolo’ is Italian in origin and means ‘small flute.’ A ‘Canon gig’ is a small ensemble, often a string quartet, hired to play background music for a wedding or other reception. The well known Canon was the work of German Baroque composer, Johann Pachelbel but neither the date nor the circumstances of its composition is known. Pachelbel’s Canon languished in obscurity until 1968 when a recording by a French chamber orchestra became a popular favorite and remains so to this day. “It’s easy to play any musical instrument. All you have to do is touch the right key at the right time and the instrument will play itself.” - Johann Sebastian Bach. “There is nothing more musical than a sunset.” - Claude Debussy.

When Sun, the ultimate teller of time, blesses the earth’s early morning with a noted gleam and the evening with a festive glow, it’s finally clear to even the most casual observer: Summer’s journey has landed her home. And with her arrival and the theft of a few gems from Cole Porter, there comes, “Another op’nin, another show!” It may not be Philly, Boston or even Poughkeepsie, but know for sure we’re talking ‘bout a new, unprecedented season at the Forestburgh Playhouse, “a chance for stage folks to say ‘Hello!’” Opening June 14, the Playhouse begins its 70th anniversary season and the now famed, veteran Producer Franklin Trapp is boldly prepared to offer a golden opportunity to experience theatre on new grounds. While prudently aware of the comfort factor, the Playhouse is finally equipped with new seats, two hundred and twenty to be exact. Desperate as the condition of the Playhouse seating may have been, the furniture did not suddenly or miraculously appear, Deus ex Machina. Each seat was individually purchased through the efforts of Franklin and his patron-supported campaign to sponsor a fundraiser last season, calling on theatre goers to individually adopt and support a seat at the theatre.

In addition to this summer’s group of youth this writer has exciting and challenging encountered in recent memory. theatrical schedule Mr. Trapp Accompanying the remarkable has wisely retained the services stage performances are the of Caitlin Kellermeyer, his noted accomplishments of the super competent assistant Tavern’s celebrated culinary and alter ego. In addition to a guaranteed efficiency in legendary for their quality and attention to administrative detail, the Playhouse has become satisfying those sensory “lingua buds.” As alluded, Mr. Trapp has prepared an famed for the caliber of its oft’ celebrated Cabaret. More good news: The number of exciting season of theatre. And opening night performers in the resident company (ResCo) on June 14, will be an event to SHOUT about! has been increased to 16 members. complicated and complemented by song and dance, will provide the perfect summer excursion on the high seas. The fun continues through the summer with The Addams Family: the musical; fivetime Tony award winning musical The Who’s Tommy; followed by Stephen Sondheim’s most requested creation, Into The Woods. The musical season will conclude with an appropriate tribute to the rock music of the ‘80s. Rock of Ages will present a warmhearted look at the music of the ‘80s, teamed with an affectionate remembrance of wine coolers, flowing locks and flickering bics. Theatre, for all the right reason, stands tall in the test of time for its attention to society and unique ability to comment and judge. Mr. Trapp has wisely chosen to produce just such a piece of American theatre with his selection of the summer’s final production. To Kill a Mocking Bird, by Harper Lee, a timeless theme from one of this country’s significant novels. Despite familiarity and alleged redundancy, the question remains: Why is it a sin to kill a mockingbird? So now, “The overture is about to start... cross your fingers and hold your heart: It’s curtain time!”

Community Building Through the Arts The Heart of a Community: Phillipsport Community Center Quality of life issues are a central reason why people select the communities where they make their homes. A core resource that residents search for is a community center. These facilities offer opportunities for local townspeople to spend time together while participating in affordable quality activities. They can be the heart of many neighborhoods. One example is the Phillipsport Community Center Association, Inc., (PCC) founded in 1956. The PCC is a community-based volunteer resource center located in Phillipsport, a rural Mamakating Valley area of Sullivan County. The center is located in a lovely hamlet where there are no businesses. The non-profit organization is funded with a music grant from the Delaware Valley Arts Alliance, private donations, and fundraisers. Mathew Migliaccio, President of the PCC, shared that his motivation for volunteering at the center is to build community. “Society is so segmented...Phillipsport is a small world hamlet. In this community it is easier to break down barriers,” said Mathew. Housed in a renovated 1800’s schoolhouse, the PCC has regular monthly music concerts on the third Saturday of the month. The next

Design drafting inspired Michael Byro to draw and paint from an early age. Byro loves the work of George Seurat, who coined the term, Impressionism. His first job as a color matcher encouraged his interest in art in which he aims for simplicity. Byro’s art graces the covers of two poetry books by his wife, Laura Byro. Michael will exhibit his faux-aic pointillism in an exhibit titled Byromania at the Amity Gallery in Warwick. Laura will give a reading of her poems at the artist’s reception on June 4 from 2:30pm-4:00pm. The Byros will be available to explain their “Byrotechnics.” The show can be viewed weekends in June from Noon-4:00pm. Singing the Praises & Phrases of Johann Strauss II THE PRAISES “Away with the music of Broadway, be off with your Irving Berlin. Oh, I give no quarter to Kern or Cole Porter, and Gershwin keeps pounding on tin. “How can I be civil when hearing this drivel; it’s only for nightclubbin’ souses. Sculptures by Jinwon Chang

The imagery for the exhibition HwehGeeh (“to return again” in Korean) was inspired by three near death experiences in artist Jinwon Chang’s life, each as a result of almost drowning; at age 4 in a river, at age 10 in a swimming pool, and in high school at the sea. These traumatic events were the catalyst that resulted in the created imagery based on aquatic creatures and vessels able to survive in water. Jinwon, in his ‘meditations’ becomes the creatures and vessels who can survive in the environment. In doing so he overcomes the fear of death. Chang will be exhibiting sculptures and paintings at St. John’s Episcopal Church and MISU, both at 40 Market Street, Ellenville, from June 26-September 4. “The sculptures are too large to have only in one place and I think the historic and beautiful church space is a great room for such!,” said MISU’s Anastasia Solberg. The reception is on June 26, from 2:00pm-5:00pm.

Jane Lynch Comes to Sugar Loaf!

Fresh from her iconic portrayal of Sue Sylvester on Glee and her Broadway debut as Miss Hannigan in Annie, Jane Lynch unleashes her uncanny humor in the new hit comedy Angel from Hell airing on CBS Thursday evenings at 9:30pm. Lynch takes on the role of Amy, a seemingly fearless and outspoken woman who insinuates herself into the life of an organized and uptight young woman, Allison, claiming to be her “guardian angel.” Allison is an intense, driven dermatologist who is sure that Amy is just an inebriated, outspoken nut, until every one of her warnings proves true. As Allison tries to push Amy away, Amy makes her final pitch: her sole mission is to provide Allison with helpful guidance that nudges her in the right direction in life - and it’s her final chance to prove herself as an angel. According to the New York Times, “The series, created by Tad Quill, dials down Ms. Lynch’s caustic comic persona a notch or two - Amy is part mean Sue Sylvester from Glee, part friendly Clarence from It’s a Wonderful Life. Mr. Quill has cited Bewitched and I Dream of Jeannie as his models for Angel From Hell, but the emphasis is less on magic than on female buddy comedy.” For the past two and a half years, Lynch

has been the host of NBC’s Hollywood Game Night for which she received an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Host. She also recently wrapped the final season of Glee on FOX for which she is an Emmy and Golden Globe winner. Lynch also authored the autobiography Happy Accidents which topped several national best-sellers list, including the New York Times and LA Times. Jane Lynch will be making her way to the Sugar Loaf Performing Arts Center (SLPAC) for their first annual fundraising gala. She will be performing her own musical comedy tour, See Jane Sing, in which she mixes her signature quick wit with beloved Broadway songs. Jane shares the stage with The Office’s Kate Flannery and Glee’s vocal coordinator Tim Davis and has already received rave reviews. The annual fundraiser will support SLPAC including the Performing Arts Academy, upcoming events, facility upgrades and more. Sponsorship opportunities are available. Come out and see Jane Lynch - right in Sugar Loaf! - on June 26 at 7:00pm. Crawford Gallery Plays Favorites

“Tree” by Sal Aiello in “Days of Leisure”

“When I think of my favorite paintings that have been brought into the gallery,” says Crawford Gallery of Fine Art (CFGA) curator Tom Bolger, “I also think that they must be my favorite artists who painted them; but lately a painting came in that’s called Apollo at the Seashore by Richard Taddei. It’s time to be fickle and of course now it’s my favorite painting. “So favorites can come and go, change and then you have paintings that will never change that you always like. The reasons are many. Some favorites you’ve learned from, others make you feel good, some are held with reverence, just unbelievable works of art. Some take your breathe away. But that doesn’t mean that you can’t add to them, so I guess as an artist you have to prepare a long list of favorite artists and favorite paintings. “And of course every category has a favorite

painting. You have a favorite still life, seascape, favorite landscape, portrait, and then it goes into favorite mediums, so the word favorite is endless - be sure not to miss this very favorite show, so you can add to your list!” Apollo at the Seashore is featured in the exhibit, Days of Leisure at CFGA through June 16 during the gallery’s Ceramics & Jewelry Spring Sale. And then from June 25July 21 you can get to see Favorite Paintings by Favorite Artists in various mediums and on various subjects. The reception is on July 9, 5:30pm-7:30pm. The CGFA is located at 65 Main Street, Pine Bush. For information: 845-744-8634.

GNSO: “From Russia With Love”

The Greater Newburgh Symphony Orchestra (GNSO) concludes its 2015-16 season on June 11 with From Russia With Love under the baton of guest conductor Russell Ger, the fourth and final candidate to become the GNSO’s next Music Director. “We begin with the musical fireworks and virtuosity in the Festive Overture of Shostakovitch,” writes Maestro Ger. “We then Russell Ger venture deep into the heart of Russia with Rachmaninoff’s tour-de-force, his Piano Concerto #2. Our spectacular finale will be Ravel’s unsurpassed orchestral coloration of Mussorgsky’s wonderfully vivid Pictures at an Exhibition, replete with all the pealing bells of the Great Gate of Kiev.” Mr. Ger is a young Australian conductor based in New York City. His repertoire spans orchestral, operatic and choral music, which he has conducted across North America and in his home country. One of his career highlights came in 2003 when he conducted the Finale from Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony at the Sydney Opera House. On this occasion, he led a massed community chorus and an orchestra that included members of both the Sydney Symphony and the Australian OperaBallet. At its 1897 premiere, Rachmaninoff’s first symphony, though now considered a

significant achievement, was derided by contemporary critics. Compounded by problems in his personal life, Rachmaninoff fell into a depression that lasted for several years. His second piano concerto confirmed his recovery from clinical depression and writer’s block, cured only by a course of hypnotherapy, and is presently one of the most, if Maxwell Foster not THE most, popular and beloved piano concerto in the repertory. The soloist for Rachmaninoff will be Maxwell Foster, also Australian and considered one of that continent’s “most sought-after young artists.” This year he appeared as a soloist with the Juilliard Orchestra premiering a contemporary composer’s work. From Russia With Love will be presented June 11 at 7:30pm in Aquinas Hall at Mount Saint Mary College, 130 Powell Avenue in Newburgh. Arrive at 6:30pm for the concert preview by Gordon Shacklett. Each concert gives audience members an opportunity to express their opinions of the guest conductor’s work. Join in and let your voice be heard, as well as the marvelous music! Tickets can be purchased in advance online at www.newburghsymphony.org or at the door for the June 11, 7:30pm concert. Students are admitted free.

NACL: Explore Fear with “The Terrifying”

Each year, the North American Cultural Laboratory (NACL) invites a select number of ensembles to participate in the Deep Space Performance Residency Program. Now in its 6th year, the program invites artists to spend one week at the NACL artists’ residence to develop their performance, incorporate production values, and test their play at NACL’s theatre in front of a live audience. In 2016, NACL received over 50 applications. On June 11 at 7:30pm, NACL will present The Terrifying by Minor Theater of NYC. Written and directed by Julia Jarcho, The Terrifying explores the many facets of fear.

In a little village on the cusp of modernity, two teenagers and their families are stalked by a ravening monster. Taking cues from horror movies, as well as the visceral scariness specific to live theater, the play experiments with soundscapes and textures of darkness and silence. Building toward a final confrontation between girl and demon, the play asks how one can live every day with forces that want to destroy - including the urge to destroy oneself. The performance features a score created by award-winning sound designer Ben Williams. NACL is located at 110 Highland Lake Road, Highland Lake. Call 845-557-0694 for more information.

Playwright John Cariani Tells All

Did you know, Almost, Maine by playwright John Cariani recently replaced Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream as the most-produced play in North American high schools? Tony Award nominee and Broadway star Cariani has also become one of the world’s mostproduced playwrights. He wrote and directed two prior hits at Shadowland: Almost, Maine and Love/Sick. Now Shadowland will be one of the first theatres in the country to produce his latest work, Last Gas, a romantic comedy of sorts, about finding real love in a setting of last chances. From a recent interview with Cariani: Who is your favorite playwright? “I don’t have favorite people, I have favorite plays, favorite productions, favorite performances. Many great playwrights have written awful plays. Many great actors have given awful performances. Many great directors have helmed bad productions. I like what people create more than I like the people themselves, I think. I don’t think greatness lives exclusively in a single individual.” What famous play do you wish you had written? “I wish I had written Alan Ayckborn’s Norman Conquests. It’s the funniest, saddest

collection of plays I have ever seen.” How do you find inspiration for your craft? “My hometown in Maine inspires me. Representing people from rural areas inspires me. Fighting cynicism inspires me. I think hope and joy are crucial components to drama. Inspiration is a tiny part of it all. I just work hard. Awful boring hard work.” The best part of waking up is... “If I’m in Maine, the smell. Of the woods. In New York City, getting to take my dog - pit bull/cocker spaniel mix - for a quick run.” What’s something on your bucket list you have yet to achieve? “I want to become a good enough piano player that I can accompany singers. And I want to be able to play Rhapsody in Blue. It’ll probably never happen. That’s a beast of a piece. And I just started playing.” What do you hope audiences take away from one of your shows? “I hope they laugh a lot. I hope they are surprised by the stories I tell, by what they are asked to think about.” Last Gas runs from June 3-19, at Shadowland Stages, 157 Canal Street, Ellenville. Box Office: 845-647-5511.

W h i s p eri n g Pines - C o o k i n g June 25 is Catfish Day! National Catfish Day is a great holiday for fishermen and catfish lovers alike! This weird holiday was created in 1987 when President Reagan declared that June 25 will be National Catfish Day to recognize and bring awareness to the catfish farming industry. Catfish are a unique and scrumptious type of fish that are a popular meal on dinner plates around the country. Many catfish are raised on farms which are environmentally friendly. Celebrate this holiday by cooking some catfish on the grill! Make some catfish sticks, but be sure to share them! Go to a Cajun restaurant, and order some authentic fried catfish. Go fishing for some catfish, and see how many you can catch! Go watch or participate in a fishing competition. Dress your cat up like a fish! Dress your fish up like a cat (probably not a good idea). Visit a local catfish farm, and ask to tour the facility. Wish a friend a “Happy National Catfish Day!” However you decide to spend the day, eat lots of catfish, and spread awareness about catfish farms! Enjoy my the following catfish recipes! Southern Fried Catfish (4 servings)

8 (5 to 6-oz.) catfish fillets, skin removed Salt Crab boil seasoning (I recommend Old Bay)

with

Chef Douglas Frey

4 cups all-purpose flour 1 cup cornmeal Oil, for frying

Heat fryer or deep pot halfway filled with oil to 350F. Sprinkle both sides of each catfish with salt and crab boil seasoning. In separate bowl, combine flour and cornmeal. Dredge catfish in flour mixture and place in fryer. Deep fry for approx. 7 to 8 minutes until done. Drain on paper towels. Blackened Catfish (6 servings)

2 tablespoons paprika 2 1⁄2 teaspoons salt 2 teaspoons lemon pepper 1 1⁄2 teaspoons garlic powder 1 1⁄2 teaspoons ground pepper 1 1⁄2 teaspoons dried basil 1 teaspoon onion powder 1 teaspoon thyme 6 catfish fillets 1 cup unsalted butter, melted

Heat large cast iron skillet or heavy aluminum skillet over high heat for 10 min. In small bowl combine first 8 ingredients. Dip catfish into melted butter; coat both sides of fish w/ spice mix, using about 1T spice mix for each fillet. Place fish on waxed paper. Place 3 fillets at a time in hot skillet. Drizzle each fillet w/ 1T melted butter. Cook over high heat about 2 minutes per side or until fish flakes easily. Serve immediately. Questions? Call me at 845-647-1428.
