ARTESANA SAN MIGUEL DE ALLENDE . MEXICO DHM provided design services for the Rosewood Hotel arrival experience including landscape, hardscape and water features at the porte cochere and the primary access street, Calle Nemesio Diez. The street is a beloved public space for the residents of SMA and the proposed improvements were politically important for the approval of the project. One of the goals of the project was to blend the streetscape edge into the resort so it becomes part of this very historic community. Design details were inspired by the rich history of art and design in SMA and the streetscape incorporated fountains, street furnishings, sidewalks, and a public pocket park. DHM worked closely with a resident botanist to improve the health and appearance of the existing street tree canopy, and with the architectural team for a rich and elegant arrival experience.

FOUR SEASONS GRENADA GRENADA, WEST INDIES Encompassing over 200 acres of the Mt. Hartman Estate, The Four Seasons Grenada was to be the country’s premier resort and an exclusive destination for the West Indies. While with another firm, VCDG, Marc Diemer led this project from the outset, including overall project visioning, master planning, architectural character development, and site design for all resort areas including the Arrival Village, hotel core, hotel residences, spa, golf course, beach club, marina, and exclusive private residences. The master plan and placement of site elements takes advantage of the site’s topography, spectacular views, and the varied native landscape, while protecting ecologically sensitive zones such as the coastal mangrove habitat. The master plan identifies the Grenada Dove Sanctuary, a preserved habitat for the endangered national bird of the Grenadine Islands. Currently, DHM Design is working closely with the Mt. Hartman estate’s owner and development team on an updated master plan that includes several world-class resort components as well as a host of additional economic development projects, such as a new National Hospital, a waste treatment facility, solar energy generation, and an environmental research center focused on global warming studies. HOTEL ARRIVAL VILLAGE PLANNING PRINCIPLES CARIBBEAN VERNACULAR The arrival village displays an appropriate regional character that seamlessly blends into Grenada’s built environment. INTIMATE SCALE A memorable, comfortably scaled village is achieved with loosely clustered buildings that define outdoor plaza spaces and pedestrian pathways with views to water. In order to create a charming village feel, the specific number of programmed uses is secondary in importance to the critical number of separate buildings needed to achieve a feeling of density and proximity. The occupiable spaces between the buildings give the village its sense of density, pedestrian scale, charm, and mystery. RESPONSIVE TO THE LAND Buildings and plazas step with grade for optimal views, to minimize site walls and to create visual interest remininscent of charming hillside fishing villages such as those found along the Mediterranean. Lush, tropical plantings throughout reinforce the tropical island setting and provide wonderful strolling gardens.
SITE CHARACTER FOUR SEASONS GRENADA 17
ARCHITECTURAL CHARACTER TROPICAL ELEGANCE The integration of traditional Caribbean roof forms and materials with white washed masonry walls, richly stained wood windows and shutters, with natural dark stone exposed foundation results in a regionally appropriate architecture that is relaxed, welcoming, and refined. INDOOR / OUTDOOR LIVING Blur the lines between indoor and outdoor spaces with open, breezy architecture that responds to the tropical climate with trellised walkways, ample shade, and integrated garden spaces.

GRENADA LANDSCAPE ANALYSIS NATIVE LANDSCAPE Grenada’s volcanic geology ranges from high mountain peaks to low relief coastal periphery. This dramatic landscape supports complex plant biomes organized by elevation, from sub-tropical forests to coastal scrub woodlands. Careful consideration will be given to the resort’s introduced plant palette in order to achieve a seemingly “natural” transition from tropical broadleaf evergreens to the existing dry forest. TRANSITIONAL LANDSCAPE Grenada’s transitional landscape is used as design inspiration for the resort. Just as the native plant colonies transition from high elevations to low, the design character of the resort’s built environment also transitions from more refined, richly detailed architecture at higher elevation to a relaxed, rustic Caribbean character at the beach.

THE PENINSULA BEVERLY HILLS, CALIFORNIA With one of Southern California’s most desirable addresses, The Peninsula Beverly Hills looks and feels like an exclusive private residence built in classic Renaissance style. The hotel is built around an inner garden courtyard, which provides privacy for each of the garden suites, as well as being an internal focal point for the hotel. Completing this 5-Star luxury hotel was a technical challenge, as all outdoor areas are on-structure. Marc Diemer was the project manager and designer for a recently completed renovation that included extensive upgrades to the rooftop pool, paving, plantings and furnishings. Design features include marble mosaic tile work, a new rooftop dining terrace, and living green-walls.

FOUR SEASONS RESORT HUALALAI HISTORIC KA’ŪPŪLEHU, HAWAII The Four Seasons Hualalai is a world-renowned destination resort. On March 11, 2011, the Japanese tsunami devastated much of the pristine beachfront and resort amenities. The restoration that followed provided an opportunity to further enhance the resort, including the Beach Tree Restaurant. During its renovation, Marc Diemer collaborated with local architects to create a Hawaiian beach house atmosphere. Guests are invited to relax in custom Adirondack chairs on the expansive deck or dine beneath the 16-foot vaulted ceilings. Improvements to the unique King’s Pond included rustic Koa wood shade structures and swim platforms.

KONA VILLAGE RESORT KA’ŪPŪLEHU, HAWAII Originally developed in the mid-1960’s, Kona Village Resort has been a yearly destination for a loyal, family-oriented, multigenerational clientele for over 45 years. The 2011 Japanese tsunami caused significant damage to the property, necessitating an extensive reconstruction effort to the established resort. Design work focused on overall planting improvements, site planning for new guest hales, new family and adult pools, and the refurbishment of beloved resort features such as the famous shipwreck bar. The design vision is to restore Kona Village as the premier Five-Star cottage-style Hawaiian resort while preserving the casual elegance and rustic character that has appealed to guests for generations.

THE ARRABELLE VAIL COLORADO Anchored by The Arrabelle Hotel and Condos, the new Lionshead creates an experience to match the award-winning ski resort. The architecture and streetscape serves as an urban counterpoint to the Bavarian Village feel in “Old Vail along Bridge Street. In keeping with this urban character, special emphasis has been placed on the design and quality of architectural finishes, pedestrian spaces, paving materials, light fixtures, wayfinding signage, and other site furnishings. With an ice rink, fire ` places, easy ski hill access, and some of the best apres-ski options in Vail, the Arrabelle has become a very popular winter destination. Summer amenities such as fountains, interactive water features, and seasonal shade structures have been incorporated to make this a year-round hub of activity.

LIFT ONE ASPEN COLORADO This project encompasses approximately 3.5 acres at the base of Aspen Mountain which includes the original, historic Lift One. Beginning as a partnership between the City of Aspen, the Aspen Ski Company, and two hotel developments, DHM provided planning, design and graphic support to a 27 person citizen’s committee throughout a six month public process (COWOP), participating in weekly meetings, design charrettes, and presentations. As the COWOP process evolved, two separate projects emerged, South Aspen Street Townhomes and Lift One, both of which retained DHM Design for landscape architecture services, and continued through a series of land use applications resulting in approved development plans for this highly visible site. Along with the addition of several luxury suites stepping up towards the base of the ski lift, historic buildings will be preserved and renovated into a ski museum and employee housing. The design preserves and integrates the Historic Lift One Park into the site alongside other public amenities, such as an apres-ski venue, poma lift, ` and park improvements.

WINTER PARK COLORADO Intrawest Placemaking asked DHM Design to assist them with refinement and implementation of the master plan for the redevelopment of the Winter Park base village. DHM’s directive as planner and landscape architect was to help realize the potential for the base area, including a new resort village. This pedestrian village is the anchor for the base area at Winter Park with shopping, dining, and outdoor entertainment and recreation areas all served by a day skier parking garage. The village is closely linked to the Fraser River corridor as a natural attraction and amenity, creating both a natural and urban experience for resort visitors. DHM Design was also responsible for site planning and design of several condominium projects within the base area, as well as outlying parking, cabriolet connections, and master planning for lower density residential areas.
