CHICAGO STUDIO IS A RESIDENT DESIGN COLLOBORATIVE HOSTED BY VIRGINIA TECH A+D. TO DEVELOP A RESONATING THESIS-LEVEL PROPOSAL, STUDENT TEAMS ENTER LOCAL DESIGN STUDIOS TO EXPLORE PROBLEMS FACING NEIGHBORHOOD INSTITUTIONS. THE FOLLOWING PROPOSAL WAS DOMINATED BY VACANT HISTORIC STRUCTURES, HOMELESS AND VIGRANT POPULATIONS AND INACTIVITY. ON BEHALF OF 48TH WARD ALDERMAN CAPPLEMAN, WE PROPOSE THE CONSTRUCTION OF A 50,000 GSF STRUCTURE TO HOST SHARED THEATERS AND CLASSROOMS FOR THE DEVELOPMENT OF NEIGHBORHOOD YOUTH. 1 HEART+PULSE PG 4-7 2 NIGHT VISION PLAN PG 8-9 3 ELEVATED TRAIN PG 10-15 4 STREET LEVEL INTERACTION PG 16-21 5 FOR THEATER ORGANIZATIONS PG 22-29 6 ACKNOWLEDGEMENT PG 30-31

WHAT RUNS THROUGH YOUR VEINS

AN ADAPTATION OF A 1990s ADVERTISEMENT BY Saatchi & Saatchi. UPTOWN THEATRE, A 1920S MOVIE PALACE, HAS BEEN CLOSED TO THE PUBLIC SINCE 1970. THE CORRIDORS THAT UPTOWN SITS ON -- BROADWAY AND THE RED LINE -- ARE AS IMPORTANT TO THE SOCIAL STATURE OF THE AREA AS ITS ORGANIZATIONS. IF PEOPLE FEEL THAT THEY ARE EXPERIENCING A PLACE INSTEAD OF A STREET OR A TRAIN, THEY ARE MORE LIKELY TO STAY AROUND.

UPTOWN

UPTOWN ROARED IN THE 1920s. IT HAD A LIFE THAT WAS UNLIKE THE CITY TO THE SOUTH. ENORMOUS MANSIONS SIT ON THE SAME STREETS, TOWERING THEATERS CASTS AN IMPOSING SHADOW TODAY. ENERGY PUMPS THROUGH THE VEINS OF THEATER ORGANIZATIONS WHO LOOK TO BRING LIFE TO UPTOWN, AS BALABAN AND KATZ DREAMED IT UP.

IN ORDER TO BREATH LIFE INTO AN OLD THEATER CORRIDOR, WE FOCUS OUR URBAN DESIGN EFFORTS ON STRENGTHENING INTERACTION WITH THE STREET, WITH TRANSIT AND WITH LOCAL NEIGHBORHOOD ORGANIZATIONS.

STRENGTHEN NEW NEIGHBORHOOD ORGANIZATIONS 1 NEW URBAN PARK 2 PLACE FOR PERFORMANCE 3 PROVIDING A PRIDEFUL PLACE TO LIVE WORK PLAY

STRENGTHEN STREET LEVEL 1 SAFER EXPERIENCE 2 STRONGER AESTHETIC 3 MORE MONEY ENTERING BUSINESSES

STRENGTHEN TRANSIT 1 CONNECT PLATFORM TO STREET 2 BUFFER NOISE 3 DRAW RIDER ATTENTION VISUALLY

THE NORTHERN PORTION OF THE RED LINE IS CHICAGOs MOST TRAVELLED ELEVATED TRAIN. ELEVATED FROM THE STREET, ATTRACTIONS CAN CONNECT WITH A RIDER VISUALLY. AT 10 MINUTE INTERVALS, THESE NEIGHBORHOOD ATTRACTIONS ARE PASSED BY REGULARLY. THE PLATFORM SHOULD BE AS VIBRANT AN EXPERIENCE AS STEPPING ON TO THE STREET.

DAVID HOCKNEY ESTABLISHED A WAY OF EXPERIENING AN IMAGE BY PIECING TOGETHER FOCAL POINTS AND DEVELOPING A STORY. THIS AMPLIFIES THE WAY OUR BRAIN CAN SEGMENT THE WORLD WE LIVE IN -- ESPECIALLY AT THE SPEED OF AN ACCELERATING TRAIN.

AS THE TRAIN FLIES BY MOST INTERSECTIONS, VENUES AND THEATERS ARE SOMETIMES LOST IN THE EXPERIENCE OF THE RIDE, FROM PEOPLE WATCHING TO EMAIL TO LOOKING UP AGAIN. CURRENTLY, PIGEONS ACTIVATE THE SITE.

AS A SERIES OF FRAMES, THIS NEW STRUCTURE WILL CONNECT THE PLATFORM TO THE NEIGHBORHOOD DIRECTLY. THE EXIT WILL PASS THROUGH THE INTERNAL STRUCTURE, PAST VENDORS AND DOWN INTO A PLAZA TO WATCH PERFORMANCES IN THE BLACK BOX THEATER.

PLATFORM

BROADWAY WINDS THROUGH SOME OF THE CITYs MOST HISTORIC SCENES. IN LAKEVIEW, BROADWAY IS A SPECTACLE. ITS DIAGONAL ORIENTATION THROUGH THE GRID SLOWS TRAFFIC NATURALLY, BUT NEAR THE LAWRENCE INTERSECTION, IT ACTS MORE AS A HIGHWAY.

BROADWAYS STREET WALL IS ALSO PUNCTURED BY STREET LOTS AND STRIP MALLS. TO BOOST PEDESTRIAN AND GREEN SPACE IN THE DISTRICT, RE-PROGRAMMING VOID SPACE WOULD HELP TO SLOW TRAFFIC AND ATTRACT BUSINESSES THAT WOULD OTHERWISE NOT GET THE FOOT TRAFFIC TO OPERATE.

THE STREET AND THE TRAIN ARE INFORMAL PUBLIC SPACES. WITH A RANGE OF PERFORMANCE THEATER ROOMS OCCUPYING THE NEW SPACE, THE BLACK BOX THEATER CAN REPRESENT SHARED NEIGHBORHOOD SPACE WITH A SENSE OF PRIVACY.

IT GIVES ARTISTS A SPACE TO TELL AS STORY AND A CHILD A SPACE TO PLAY AND CREATE. ORGANIZATIONS AND AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAMS WILL ENERGIZE THIS NEW CORNER INSTITUTION.
