The Local's motto is to "connect the community" by bringing people closer with great features on amazing local people and ensuring you know what is happening around your community whether that's a festival, a fete or maybe just a great special from one of our fantastic advertisers. Content is key.

We love writing about local people doing inspiring things and even local people doing ordinary things. And as some people, mostly politicians, have found out, if you are not local you will not appear in the pages of The Local.

You will find The Local, and all the back copies, online at www.tlnews.com.au and we deliver bulk drops throughout the region along with smaller "cafe" packs to every cafe, hotel, bar and restaurant we can find. “It was an amazing evening,” said Karen McHugh, assistant principal of Daylesford, Drummond and Yandoit primary schools. “The festival was a way of bringing the community together in a welcoming environment.”

Picnickers enjoyed roaming puppeteers, a sausage sizzle, food vans and a musical instrument garage sale along with groovy beats provided by staff and talented parents.

“I’ve been told the music could be heard down the lake and across the town,” Karen said.

The November festival was both a showcase and a celebration of the school’s lead role in implementing the Resilience, Rights and Respectful Relationships program to be rolled out in Victorian public schools by 2022.

The program was developed in response to Australia’s high levels of gender-based violence and increasing levels of anxiety and other mental health issues in students. It aims to build respect for cultural diversity, greater emotional literacy and community connection within schools.

Daylesford Primary School is one of 1000 schools to take part across the state with the Education Department saying schools were chosen "based on their demonstrated commitment, readiness and capacity to implement a whole-school approach".

“We are driven by our passion for social change and were thrilled to be chosen as a lead school for this program,” Karen said.

“Research shows working on positive relationships must commence from an early age. We teach the children to communicate their emotions in an improved way rather than using anger and violence to resolve their problems. The more the students deal with this information the more intrinsic it becomes.”

The students also teach each other.

“Our school captains are tasked with explaining core values such as honesty, trust, respect and responsibility at assembly. They do it in a child-friendly way using pictures to show what respect looks, feels and sounds like," Karen said.

Students have embraced the program wholeheartedly and are now working on a mural featuring the six seasons of the Dja Dja Wurrung calendar. The school is also building an Armistice garden which will be filled with native plants and display both the Indigenous and Australian flags.

“It is important to acknowledge the past and pay respect to the traditional owners of our land,” Karen said. “Through teaching our children about cultural diversity and the differences we have in our own community we are helping them engage with a global world.”

How these 'Clunatics' bring history to life

H

ISTORY seeps from the stones of Clunes. It is there in the summer sun in this town made from gold.

When the gold petered out in the once bountiful underground mines in the 1890s, many people left but some took Clunes with them, forming clubs in its name in Melbourne, Geelong and even far-off Kalgoorlie.

Today a lot of this is recalled in the Clunes Museum, which has a certain dynamism as it welcomes visitors and newcomers, who may come to find the history of their home or business building. And not only is the Clunes story of more than a century ago remembered in the rambling main street building with its massive bluestone foundations, but also recent history, such as the 13 film and TV productions shot there over 15 years, which could soon be formally celebrated.

A feature, of course, would be a permanent display marking the 40th anniversary of the shooting of the first Mad Max film, which is in February next year.

Also in the pipeline is an oral history project, to capture the memories of old Clunes residents before they are lost.

Presiding over all this with an affable eye is retired secondary schoolteacher James Curzon-Siggers who shows a visitor archives dating back to 1860 and a magnificent silver service from 1875 presented to a mine manager who helped his shareholders reap a fortune.

These are among the glories of the museum. Nearby is a gold medal awarded to the winner of the Ballarat to Clunes bike race in 1896, found in a Cash Converters’ store in Perth. How did it get there? Perhaps as part of the miners’ move west in search of more gold.

A few years ago, says James, the museum resembled a club in the best sense where there was a strong sense of belonging and with full control of the stand-alone building. This all changed with the $2.9 million redevelopment of the historic building in 2013. While workspace, gallery space and a sense of ownership were lost, it brought new community life and connection with a library, information centre, council office and a couple of meeting areas, all under the Hepburn Shire banner of The Warehouse.

The new section is light and airy but unfortunately the museum’s approachability is a touch diminished because the entrance foyer does not open onto the iconic main street.

Upstairs, gold history is all about, rubbing shoulders with displays of civic pride.

Here too is a record of the Clunes in Melbourne Committee, a huge photo from 1902 bearing about 120 individual portraits, only six of whose names are yet known.

The museum was bequeathed to the Shire of Talbot and Clunes by Holly Barkell, an undertaker's widow, in 1973, the roughly 150-year-old former contractors’ warehouse being named after her husband William as the William Barkell Arts and Historic Centre.

Among the curiosities is a display to remember on George Rose (1862 -1944), an entrepreneurial Clunes-born photographer who was an pioneering exponent of the stereograph, an early type of 3D. Cut to a nearby 1933 photo of the very serious members of the Clunes Mouth Organ Band.

James, who's 65, has lived permanently in Clunes since 2012 and been president for three years. "I joined thanks to a member of the Museum who heard me say, 'I really should get involved', and who gave me the 'push' I needed.

"What do I get out of it? Every time I'm in the archives, I find myself learning something new and surprising about the town's fascinating history. I think that's a common volunteer experience: it really is interesting and enjoyable."

As part of the agreement with Hepburn Shire, he'd like to see a special exhibition annually and two significant changes to the permanent exhibition. "Obviously, a section on the history of film production in the town is a priority.

"And on the back of that, have every local visit once a year - and recommend it as a 'must see' for all visitors. As well, commissioning a best-selling history of the town is a personal hobby-horse."

Volunteer Sue Gubby tells of the plan to make two-minute films of locals recounting family histories. In her two years working with a team of catalogue and curatorial volunteers she’s helped record the museum's 3500 items, moving them from the old card system to a computer database using Victorian Collections.

Another volunteer, Karen Byrne, is research officer and, somewhat reluctantly, vice-president. She handles requests for research from families moving into the area, movement that has seen the population grow from 960 in 1960 to up to 2000 if parttimers and weekenders are included. Three hundred such enquiries have been made this year.

Other questions come from grandparents whose young descendants may want answers about their families to questions posed in primary school. These answers may be found in graveyard records, ratepayers’ files, marriage records, a newspaper or two that ran for a century until 1966, all of which are steadily being digitally recorded.

There are few hospital records because the town's 19th century hospital burnt down in the 1944 bushfires.

The museum depends on 15 active members and is always looking for more volunteers. Sometimes this work brings recognition: Pat Cook received an Order of Australia for her 25 years as secretary and curator at the Museum and for her work for the local show, as well as bringing the Wesley Campus to Clunes.

Call them “Clunatics” or “Clunes-ites”, the museum’s helpers clearly enjoy bringing the old place to life and seeing the history spill from the stones.

4WD vehicle drivers not keen on national park

“There will be no future for people like us if the national park proposal is taken O REALLY experience the Victorian bush, you will need to use a four-wheel drive vehicle and there are countless people out there every up in its entirety and it will knock the community about in a big way. From the income derived from 4WD tours to vehicle recoveries, when folks come up from weekend doing just that; from the Murray river to the coast.

No-one can be sure of the exact figures but Four-Wheel Drive Victoria, the peak body representing four-wheel drive interests in the state, has nearly 4500 members alone. Here in the Wombat State Forest, the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning who oversee forest use, says that on a long weekend there can be 100 or more 4WD vehicles and their occupants enjoying popular spots such as Firth Park, Balt and Nolans Creek campgrounds.

And while the concentration of users tends to be in the eastern corner of the region, there are many other spaces that receive regular visitors from Spring Hill to Korweinguboora.

Some of those regulars belong to the Daylesford Section 8 4X4 Club, one of the most well-known groups in the area. Section 8 was created in 2006 and today it has around 200 active members who come together regularly to do outings into the local bush and other activities including fundraising for worthy charities.

The proposed Wombat National Park has its members very concerned, not just due to the issue of access and the effects that such a move may have on the local economy but the perception emerging in some quarters of the current debate that 4WD users such as them do not care about the forest they visit. A perception the club wishes to dispel.

“We are very much a family-oriented club,” says founder Matt Viola. “And our principal motto is ‘take nothing but photos and leave nothing but footprints’. I mean, we will even go in and clean up other people’s campsites. While you do get the rogue elements going back and forth though bog holes, the majority of 4WD enthusiasts are responsible and conscientious. For people like us, four-wheel driving is not just about looking for bog holes, that just wrecks your car, we want to explore interesting areas while enjoying and learning about the places we travel to.”

Beside those negative perceptions of their activities, they are also concerned about the impact on the regional economy and the ongoing maintenance of the local bush. Section 8 believe, from their experience over the years in other forest areas of Victoria, that under national park management camping will incur fees and be greatly restricted, deterring many of the visitors that regularly come to the area.

"One of the most important things us four-wheel drivers do in the forest is keep tracks open. If we find a tree down, we will clear the track immediately. So, if a bushfire goes through, the CFA don’t have to worry about getting into the regions they need to go. If they start locking us out, the CFA are going to have all sorts of grief trying to fight fires without having us around to clear tracks.”

The Section 8 Club, some members are pictured above, is made up of a lot of people who have a great connection to the surrounding forest and are justifiably proud to have it in their backyard. They know its tracks, trails and special spots intimately and there is nothing they would like more than to see the Wombat State Forest remain open for all.

“Much of the most sensitive areas are already under conservation protection and we would prefer that the remainder stays as state forest,” says Matt. “But most importantly with improved funding for the existing management to limit misuse. The blanket lockout proposed by VEAC with the Wombat National Park will not solve the issues facing the region into the future.”

Pick me, pick me...

Just sayin’...

A

LONG, long time ago, when the earth was flat and they were still grinding the sharp bits off the first stone wheel, I lived in Japan. In Ome City to be precise, about an hour from Tokyo.

Well, it seems like a long time ago. I arrived with a suitcase, which contained pretty much my worldly possessions, having sold my lovely blue Holden Sunbird just before I jetted out.

But then, to go with my lovely rented apartment, I realised I needed furniture and bought three largish pieces from the secondhand shop down the road. Yes, lovely old carved wooden Japanese furniture that no-one wanted because it was, well, old. (And yes, I wish I had the maturity to realise it was beautiful and shipped it back home. With age, comes sense.)

I didn't realise it at the time, but along with getting to know kanji, hiragana and katakana, I also got to know my mum better, living in Japan. That's because she just kept turning up, not like a bad penny, but, you know, a lot. And for long stretches. Like eight weeks at a time.

Now that was fine, although being a 23-year-old, living abroad for the first time, it did curtail my social activities just a little. Until we discovered Ome's Goodwill Guides.

This was a group of women - I'm not being sexist, it was just women - who offered to take my mum around and show her places of interest. They were all about the same age, mid-50s perhaps, with time on their hands and a love of Ome. So I would head off to teach English at junior high schools around the region and mum would head off with the Goodwill Guides and be taken around the region. I would get home about 5pm and mum would usually get home about 9pm. One night I kept getting calls with the last one saying "your mother come home time now midnight". I just jarred the door open and went to bed.

Mum went to some fantastic places, off the beaten track, like centuries-old sake factories - that was the late night - pottery kilns built into mountain sides, places where they had pickled plums for a thousand years.

Anyway, I thought of those guides as I wrote the story about Faye Pryer on page 53. A woman who came all the way from Perth to research her family history and just happened on the right people at the right time.

I just thought that there would be so many people with knowledge about this wonderful region who would be happy to take people on fact-finding missions, or just a wander, and spend a few hours imparting that knowledge. I don't know the legalities but I reckon it could be a great thing for the Central Highlands. The Central Highlands Goodwill Guides it's got a ring to it. And I would put my hand up. Just sayin'...

Blackwood album launch for Cat and Clint

AT Moser grew up in Red Cliffs in northwest Victoria on the Murray River. She learnt violin as a child and was lucky to have wonderful parents who exposed her to live music and great records from a young age. Clint Dylan O'Gradey was born in Bunderberg and grew up travelling around Australia in a Kombi. He started his musical journey as an electric guitar player and performed with several rock and blues bands around Melbourne over the years. Later down the track, Cat and Clint, who now live in Blackwood, shared a mutual love of old time music, early blues and vintage country. They are launching their latest album, The Days That Used To Be, at the The Blackwood Hall on Sunday, December 16 at 3pm. They told their story to Donna Kelly.

Donna: Where did you meet?

Cat: We first met at The Lomond Hotel in East Brunswick, where the live music was and still is of a very high standard. We knew each other for years through the big music family and in particular, the old-time music scene around Melbourne. A musical romance blossomed when we were both getting into five-string banjo. Being a couple that plays music together, it happens easily with little effort and it gives us a deep connection musically and emotionally. Living together makes it much more achievable to work on new material and rehearse. There's also the added bonus of being open and honest, listening to each another and try to have an equal say in everything.

Donna: What is the process of doing an album?

Cat: Putting an album together can be quite simple through to very complicated, depending on how you go about it. The whole process took around eight months.

We recorded everything live in two days, straight to reel-to-reel, through an old tape machine from Capitol Records. The reels were then cut and spliced by hand in order of track listing and then mastered back onto another reel. The mastered tape was then taken to Zenith Records in Melbourne where they completed the vinyl pressing process. I made a linocut portrait for the cover art and Lawrence Finn of Hipcat Printery completed the design and layout, as well as making all the digital download cards by hand using his beautiful old letterpress machine. Taking the harder, more expensive road of analogue recording is worth it for the beautiful, woody, warm tones Donna: What's the live music scene like around here? that can be achieved. Every part of the journey is so tactile and hands-on. These old Cat: There is a great live music scene in the Central Highlands. Spudfest, The Lost Trades Fair, The Blackwood Music Festival and others. This is Cat: It is traditional music that dates back many centuries and has its roots in where the real magic happens too. Live music around campfires, dancing, jamming many countries and different cultures. The music has come from humble origins. and the exchange of tunes from one person to the other.

It's music from the people, for the people. Over the centuries, these tunes have often been passed on by the aural tradition as opposed to the structured world of classical Donna: Finally, what's your Central Highlands story? music for example. People would go and seek out older fiddle players, do some jobs Cat: My Central Highlands story? Hmmm. Clint and I moved to Blackwood in around the house for them, then learn a few tunes from them. The tradition of this 2011 after years of living in Melbourne. We had musical friends that lived up this exchange, its respect for elders and tradition bearers, is still alive today. We hope our way and they encouraged us to look for a place up here. We love living in the bush music inspires other people to play old-time music and become part of this exchange with nature at our doorstep. We feel really lucky. themselves.

G

EE, this week I have seen some things that have aggravated me enough to awaken the old man in myself.

I was down in Melbourne, to be exact at QV Melbourne, standing outside Woolies when I witnessed “The great baby formula heist” of the year.

A few people, who were of Asian appearance (I know, PC gone wrong, but they were talking in Chinese), had a set-up outside the exit of the store.

They had a shopping trolley, a wheelie bag and a dozen or so shopping bags with around six people going in and out of the store loading their bags up with baby formula.

You see, Woolies has a rule, according to the staffer at the front, who I asked to help me stop the heist. The rule is no more than two cans per person per sale. But these people were getting the two cans of baby goodness food, putting them in baskets, buying them and then running back into the store through the selfcheckout and repeating the process.

In the 15 minutes that I stood there, and without a thought to the dozens of people who had gathered and were taking footage of them, they had illegally purchased a couple of shopping trollies full, and were on their way.

Now to add insult to injury, well not really injury but more astonishment, they took the ill-gotten “white gold” away in the shopping trollies provided by the supermarket adorned with a blanket to make the convoy look less suspicious.

They ignored me, who they could tell had more than an inquisitive look, actually it was a lot more than a passing look as I was standing over them gangster-style, asking them not to take anymore. But they simply said “no English” and gave me a thumbs up and a smile.

Now, I know it is not my business, however if people let idiots get away with being idiots then the idiots win. And that means the world gets overrun by twits, imagine nitwits running the world? Oh yeah, so that’s what happened! We let the fools run riot and now they rule us.

So, my point is, we must fight back and win over the streets again, disarm the morons, one can of infant goodness at a time.

Now another thing that got me rattled this week was the weather, man, talk about a land of drought and flood. Sydney got hit last week with two months’ worth of rain in one morning while Queensland got hit by a plethora of fire storms and they say global warming isn’t true. Well at least that’s what old mate Trumpy Bear says, and he’s no fool right?

Anyway, back here in the Central Highlands of Victoria we pray for another noneventful fire season and hopefully everyone has cleaned up their gutters and blocks of land and has a plan to survive which is discussed with the family, neighbours and at the ready.

Trentham resident campaiging for CERT

RENTHAM local Ethan Brown is campaigning for a Community Emergency Response Team to be placed in the town.

Mr Brown has started an online petition at change.org and will also be working on a paper petition in coming weeks. He said Trentham desperately needed better emergency medical care.

"I am calling for the state government to give Trentham the resource it so desperately needs, a Community Emergency Response Team, to respond to medical emergencies in the town of Trentham and surrounding areas including Lyonville, Blackwood, Newbury, Tylden and Fern Hill and others in between.

“Yes, I am aware of the Blackwood CERT team, and don’t get me wrong they do a very good job at helping the community of Trentham and others in the area, however they are volunteers and so would the Trentham CERT team be, but as we know volunteers are not always available to respond to the community's calls for help when we need them most.

“If a CERT team was placed in Trentham it would benefit the Blackwood CERT team also, by allowing them to be backed up much faster than if they had to wait for an ambulance to arrive. This would be a big help when there was a serious medical emergency including a cardiac arrest.

“A CERT team being placed in the town of Trentham would mean that a person who was having a cardiac arrest would have a higher chance of survival rather than having to wait. We all know that when someone’s heart stops every minute is critical to the patient’s survival."

Mr Brown also urged qualified first aiders with CPR qualifications to sign up with GoodSAM. Operating internationally, GoodSAM (Smartphone Activated Medics) incorporates the world's most advanced emergency alerting and dispatching platform with a community of over 40,000 highly governed, trained and trusted responders.

The GoodSAM Cardiac system integrates with ambulance service CAD (Computer Aided Dispatch) systems to trigger bystander response while the ambulance service is en route.

“I have already signed up as one of these responders and sadly until not long ago I was the only one a lot of the time in Trentham," Mr Brown said.

"Now there are two people who are on a lot of the time, which is myself and one other public member, but we are only volunteers and are not always available when members of the community may need the help.”

Mr Brown said he had not had a positive response from the state government and was instead hoping the community would push for a Trentham CERT. “I would like to thank the community members that have already jumped on and signed the online petition which has been started.

"In the near future I also am looking at starting the traditional paper petition so as people who do not have access to the internet can sign the petition and show their support to this very important campaign for the Trentham community.”

O CHAIN or not to chain is the question.

Hasn’t it been lovely to see the rain lately? A well needed soaking during a dry year.

Watching the rainfall prompted me to finish a rain chain project I had sidelined and forgot about. I love watching the rain fall. Off leaves and branches, down window panes or gardens, making tiny waterfalls.

You see, I had a couple of shade roofs built to shelter us when going from the back doors to the garage and outdoor lounging area. Naturally I added a gutter to direct the rainfall instead of it running straight off the roof and creating a trench below, but I did not want an ugly downpipe in full view. A rain chain was the obvious alternative.

Rain chains were originally used in Japan to direct the water from the roof into a barrel for household use. Rain chains direct water flow by giving the water droplets some direction whilst the link, bells, cups or whatever else is used in the chain, slows the flow.

Admittedly, the water flow is open and splashing can and does occur. Not a problem if the chain is directed into a vessel, pond or rocky garden bed. The waterfall effect is in full view and when it isn’t raining the chain is a piece of art that can be enjoyed.

I would not recommend swapping all your house gutters for rain chains as the idea of the gutter is to direct water away from foundations.

I would recommend a rain chain off a roof that has a smaller water runoff and where it is visible to you. The water must be directed away from the base of the house by the extension of the roof-line with a great example being from a pergola, verandah or cubby house.

You can try making a personalised chain from found objects. I made one of mine from old silver tea sets and bike chain sprockets because they had some meaning to my household.

My other chain is a plain, large-linked bought chain.

Both chains are directed into a drain directly below because I couldn’t place a garden bed in those spots.

If you are not predisposed to making your own rain chain, then we can buy these in Australia. I think it is a nice project to do, especially with Christmas gift ideas looming.

It is always wonderful to watch nature and her displays.

Hepburn Shire's blooming civic gardens Recently completed landscape improvements around Daylesford's streetscapes and recreation areas are really strutting their stuff with the arrival of warmer spring weather and recent rains.

The two Vincent Street roundabouts and centre pedestrian crossing haven, now sensibly clothed with low growing, (high traffic visibility) lavender and flowering perennials are in full bloom and a magnificent sight.

Hopefully the new Malmsbury Road intersection one will soon be given the same treatment.

The totally renovated and lawned cenotaph area, with its most appropriate rosemary hedge, continues to become established and looked a treat for the Remembrance Day ceremonies.

Likewise, Victoria Park's landscaping at the entrance to the sports complex is starting to show promise of things to come, especially with the choice of one of my favourite flowering street trees, lagerstroemia or crepe myrtle, albeit the multicoloured dwarf form.

But the garden/recreation area that took my breath away is the recently completed beautification of the lake foreshore adjacent to the car park and linking the Boathouse Restaurant and Book Barn.

The tree-shaded lawns that swept down to the lake from the carpark had long been a magnet for townsfolk and visitors alike, especially so with the advent of public barbeques and well-equipped playground enclosure.

It all seemed to begin with the completion of the reborn Boathouse Restaurant and a greater emphasis on outdoor dining and relaxation, especially with the special canine-encouraged facility, shaded by huge, tubbed olive trees. A landscaped walkway down to the entrance and adjacent garden features a colour-filled display of long flowering perennials including cannas and, in particular, probably the best collection of hybrid bearded iris I've seen outside of Holland's famed Keukenhof Gardens.

The planting continues along the western border of the carpark leading out from the Boathouse which is, at present ablaze with tall deep blue salvia.

It seemed forever, that the lawned area and access to the foreshore was in turmoil during construction but, as they say "all good things are worth the wait".

What we now have is a sweeping, water's edge boardwalk, fronting a terraced and paved garden area, with ample seating and shade, in a setting that would compare with any other in the world.

All of this complements and enhances the pre-existing facilities to make Lake Daylesford an even more appealing place to spend time.

Bridesmaids towns cheaper Rental vacancy rate drops

HE latest data from the Real Estate Institute of Victoria reveals that people renting a home in regional Victoria can save up to $110 a week by moving to a neighbouring town.

At a time when the cost of living is biting many families and we are all looking at ways to save a dollar, renting in a ‘bridesmaid town’ could be a viable option to improve your bottom line.

For example, the median weekly house rent in Lara is $390, while you can rent a home for $110 less in adjacent Corio for $280.

The REIV’s data shows that you don’t need to compromise what you love about living in a particular area, be it proximity to the city, convenient transport options, access to amenities including shopping centres and strips, parks and health care facilities to stay within your weekly budget.

REIV rental data for the 12 months to September 2018 shows that people renting in Gisborne, where the median rent is $450, can save $85 a week by moving to nearby Sunbury. Those renting in Alfredton, where the weekly median house rent is $365, could save $83 by moving to nearby Wendouree where the median house rent is $283.

Other adjacent towns that have large disparities in their median rents include Delacombe ($350) and Redan ($270); Kialla ($360) and Shepparton ($280); Lake Gardens ($360) and Wendouree ($283); Alfredton ($365) and Newington ($298); East Geelong ($395) and Newcomb ($330); Stratford ($320) and Maffra ($260); Soldiers Hill ($340) and Ballarat East ($290) and Irymple ($330) and Red Cliffs ($290).

EGIONAL Victoria’s rental vacancy rate dropped to a record low of 1.3 per cent in October 2018, compared with the metropolitan rate of 2.0 per cent.

Demand is outstripping supply of rental properties in most regional areas with vacancy rates continuing to fall. Three per cent is the required level for a healthy rental market.

Ballarat and Central Highlands recorded the lowest rental vacancy rate in Regional Victoria in October at 0.8 per cent, followed by Bendigo and Loddon at 0.9 per cent and the Latrobe Valley, South and West Gippsland, Wodonga and OvensMurray which all have vacancy rates of 1.3 per cent.

Geelong and the Barwon region have the most rental properties available in Regional Victoria with a vacancy rate of 2.0 per cent. Mildura and the Mallee have a vacancy rate of 1.8 per cent, while the rate for Warrnambool, the Western District and Wimmera is sitting at 1.7 per cent.

The median weekly rent in regional Victoria is $330 for a house and $260 for a unit.

The comparatively stronger availability of rentals in Geelong may have contributed to an $8 reduction in the median rental rate for a home in the area which is now $370 per week. A lucky encounter for Hepburn descendant

S

OMETIMES you need to be in the right place at the right time. And Faye Pryer was.

Jan said Faye was very grateful for the generosity and hospitality of all those involved in her five-day trip. “She got so much out of it. She might have been descended from a house owned by a weekender. So she was very lucky, and for me, I always wanted to meet a Tognini.”

Jan said the museum had two other interesting visitors that day. One was an older couple with the man descended from Margaret Graham’s widower. Margaret was murdered in the Daylesford gold fields in 1864. David Young was hanged for her murder in 1866, the first person hanged at Castlemaine Gaol. But many believed he was innocent and the newspaper of the time, The Daylesford Mercury, reported Margaret’s husband George allegedly confessed to her murder on his deathbed.

Another man, in his 40s, also came in asking for material on Fred Wissing, who owned many hotels in the region. Jan said museum curator Gary Lawrence looked at the man and said “you are the dead spit of your great-grandfather” and got a photo up on the computer screen.

“And he was the spitting image. I was totally knocked out that day.”

Meanwhile, Denise Robinson, who started it all, celebrates 20 years as a volunteer at the information centre this week. She said the Tuesday event was just one of the things that kept her excited about volunteering.

“You can make connections for people and draw them into the web and excitement of living in this town and its connection to history.

“It’s been 20 years, but it still feels fresh. I am working with a great team at the moment, tight-knit, and we are going in a good direction with Julie (manager). She is a breath of fresh air to work with and seems to have some really good support from the council.

“It’s always a pleasure to come in and there is always a story to share. Visitors are getting older and they are up for a chat and the person at the counter is, more often than not, an older person who is also up for a chat and a story and that’s a really good thing.”

Denise said she would recommend volunteering to anyone who has the time to share what they know. “It’s a great part of your week.”

It was a Monday and Faye had flown from Perth to try and find out more about her family history.

Her grandmother had left her home in Hepburn and gone to Kalgoorlie to marry.

She later moved to Perth and named her house Hepburn. Faye often wondered about the connection.

She took the airport bus to Creswick and was picked up by the owners of Central Springs Motor Inn. The hospitality of the region had already found her.

The following day she headed to Cricket Willow, by taxi, but then called into the Daylesford Information Centre, where as luck would have it, Denise Robinson was working her usual Tuesday shift. Denise, whose own connection with the region goes back to her childhood when she would visit her grandfather, saw an opportunity.

She took Faye outside, around the corner and down the yard to the back entrance of the Daylesford Museum, where, and once again luck played a part, Jan Smith was working. (You guessed it, the volunteers only work on a Tuesday.)

Faye said she was keen to find out anything about her great-grandfather, Michael Tognini, and Jan said, “I live in his house”.

And that was the start of Faye’s remarkable visit.

A search of newspapers of the time found that Michael, who came from Someo in Switzerland and married Eliza Davidson of Spring Creek at Daylesford’s Christ Church in 1867, died in the 1906 Hepburn bushfire.

He was the only person to perish in the fire, which swept down Western Avenue to West Street and on to Kidds Gully, affecting many families.

Michael managed to save his house but was found dead of heat exhaustion inside.

He was 67.

Jan then contacted Jack Walker and Marj Green who gave Faye a tour of Christ Church. Jan took her to Yandoit to look at some of the old miners’ cottages and then back to Michael’s, now Jan’s, home.

“The only remnants are the cellar and the mine shaft but the kitchen is where the house was and still has the gable shape. Faye was speechless, to be standing in his Above, left, Faye Pryer at her great-grandfather's house, right, volunteer Denise home,” Jan said.

The following day, Jack Walker was giving a talk about his boyhood in Daylesford Robinson at the information centre at Stone and Straw at Mt Franklin, which Faye attended before heading to Lavandula to sign the Swiss Italian descendants visitors’ book – before she was taken back to Creswick, again by the Inn owners.

Asian travel story leads to writing career

B

RUCE Cooke was born in Melbourne in 1935. His father was in the Metropolitan Fire Brigade and the family moved from Windsor to Sandringham, then North Fitzroy to Reservoir. Bruce married in 1959 and was employed as a trade teacher in the Victorian Education Department and spent 40 years in Shepparton before moving to Glenlyon. He told his story to Kyle Barnes.

Kyle: When did you get into writing.

Bruce: This was an accident of circumstances. After a long career as a teacher I took some long service leave with my wife and we went to Asia, England and Europe.

At the time I was at the TAFE College at Shepparton which ran a weekly newsletter for the staff and anyone who went on a trip was expected to give a summary where you went. Mostly it was about who married who, who had a hole in one and so on with trivia, so I did the right thing and wrote an article on my trip. I thought about some of the funny things we saw. I titled it as the Toilets of Asia and Europe. Some anecdotes were hilarious and it went over quite well. Everyone got a laugh out of it.

The next year I took an early retirement at 55 and thought if I sat at home looking at TV then I would be divorced, so I decided to write a book. Having no experience in this task, I converted one of the kid’s bedrooms to an office as they had long left the nest. I locked myself in front of the computer and worked away for several hours each day. To my surprise, my wife would bring me a cup of coffee and look over my shoulder. She was a great reader and gave me a lot of positive criticism. As usual she was right so the book came together very well. That was the start of my writing career.

Kyle: What genres do you cover?

Bruce: I read a book called The Fatal Shore which was how Australia developed from the first fleet until 1947. I loved Australian history and this was full of things no one had ever heard of. It told of prisoners, governors, magistrates, development, the gold rush and hundreds of other things like the explorers. I learned how places got their names, even Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, the Murray River, things we took for granted. There were hundreds of stories to be developed and I have written 15 books on various Australian history stories. Most were picked up by publishers. I also write mystery, romance and adventure stories.

Kyle: Is there another book in the making?

Bruce: I will have another out in January that I wrote with a co-author, Geri Lennon who lives in America, called Dark Journey through Time. A female researcher is kept awake at night by a voice from the past. She decides to investigate and gets Kyle: What is your writing process? a warning to drop the investigation or die. What she discovers is an intriguing story Bruce: In my early years of writing I would spend perhaps four hours a day in front of the computer on which I produced about seven books. Then the saddest day about Nazi Germany and a candidate for the Republican Party in an upcoming election. It's a romantic, mystery adventure. I think it reads well from good reports of my life occurred when my wife passed away. She had always encouraged me to keep writing so instead of sitting and staring at the wall I would spend anything up to both here and America. eight hours a day writing. Bruce: When my wife passed away I lived alone in a house in Shepparton which Old age may have something to do with it. My kids worried about me and suggested I sell my house and move to Glenlyon, where I have a portable house built on the back of my son’s block so I would only be 20 metres away from family instead of Kyle: How many books have you written? Does being rejected hurt? three hours. It made sense, so I did as suggested and it was the best move I could Bruce: I have 31 published but have written at least another 10. Some I never bothered to send out for submission as they didn’t all grab me. It was good experience have made. Glenlyon is a beautiful place filled with friendly and helpful people. No parking problems, no noisy traffic, no street lights and a friendly wave from whoever no matter whether they were good or bad. (Rejection) never worries me as everyone you pass. Daylesford is only 10 minutes away and the country is much prettier than has a different opinion. Some publishers want a special genre. I treat it as some Shepparton. people like chocolate cake and some hate it. If I think it’s not a bad story then I just send it off to another publisher. Kyle: What is your latest book about?

Bruce: One of the genres I write is Australian colonial stories and this one, Incident at Myall Creek, tells what actually happened in 1840 in the Liverpool Plains. Atrocities against the Aboriginal people of the time were horrifying. They were slaughtered as if they were mangy dogs who deserved the treatment. This is a true account but holds some fiction to spice the story up with romance. Twentysix Aboriginal women and children were raped, murdered and burnt by drunken white men at a place called Myall Creek. It is recorded in Australian history and can be found on the internet. It was the first time white men were hanged for killing innocent blacks and it began a change in attitude towards the Aborigines that saw their survival.

Burst into summer at the Daylesford Hotel

HE balcony of the Daylesford Hotel must have one of the best views in the region. So the great news is there is now a Balcony Bar from 4.30pm on Friday, Saturday and Sunday during summer.

And it's looking pretty flash. The tables have pretty checked cloths and there are plenty of red and green floral decorations - perfect to get you in the mood for an afternoon summer cocktail perhaps.

Entrees And then there's the food. We dined downstairs last week and, as usual, had a fabulous meal starting with Calamari with sriracha mayo and a rocket salad ($14.50) and, off the specials board, Mushroom and feta croquettes ($8.50).

Both were excellent. The calamari was just so tender to the bite, and there was plenty of it, and the mayo offered a little hint of heat. Thanks for the recommendation, Rosie! The croquettes, three of them, were really tasty, and a perfect mix of flavour and texture - with a squueze of lemon. A great start to the meal.

Mains Choosing the mains is always hard here. There are the six pub staples, including a really enticing Char-grilled grain-fed rump steak with a watercress salad, chunky chips, a red wine sauce and herb and garlic butter, for just $32. That is great value.

There are also two burgers on offer, chicken or Sher Wagyu beef (both $22.50) and then that specials' board which had the Daylesford Hotel's famous pie, the special of the day being Wagyu beer and rosemary ($26) and an Eggplant parmigiana with salad and chips ($24).

But I can't go past a housemade gnocchi, and ricotta at that. It came with Shaw River buffalo mozzarella, fresh basil, napolitana sauce and shaved parmesan ($24).

It was perfect. Light, pillowy balls of gnocchi in a really rich tomato sauce with that beautiful, melting cheese all through it.

Kyle had the Beer battered fish & chips (trevally) with tartare sauce, and an iceberg, radish, onion and capers salad ($27). Once again, great food. Three decent pieces of fish, in a lovely crispy batter, big chunky chips and the salad, which I tried, was really good. Simple but full of flavour. I loved the additon of the capers.

Desserts There are three desserts to choose from, all $16, and there's also a choice of one to four cheeses with toasted sourdough and quince paste ($13, $18, $23, $28).

We decided to share a dessert and, with Rosie's recommendation, hit the chocolate jackpot with the Warm chocolate brownie with hazelnut butter, milk chocolate ganache and ice-cream. OMG. Talk about death by chocolate. As they said in Notting Hill "You'll have to fight me for it, this is a very good brownie!".

Drinks This is a hotel so there are plenty of drinks and lots of local drops. I had a Best's Riesling ($12) which was a perfect accompaniment to the calamari. Kyle had a pot of Daylesford Draught ($6.50) which is also available on tap upstairs in the Balcony Bar. Something else The Daylesford Hotel looks after its locals with plenty of meal deals most days.

AYLESFORD'S 5000 Club is in desperate need of a large freezer.

Coordinator Loretta Little said the club, which provides a community lunch every Friday at Christ Church hall, needed a freezer with a capacity of at least 350 litres.

"We have had a full beast butchered and packed by David Moses and all we need is a freezer," she said.

"Lots of people seem to get a bit bored with stocking their freezer and perhaps would consider donating it to us.

"If necessary, we would be prepared to pay a small amount for a freezer in good working condition."

Forging her own path to the front of the pack

With UnitedHealthcare folding, Lauretta has been thrust out of her comfort zone and is preparing for the world of European racing by pedalling the backroads around her Fern Hill home .

“Pre-season is all about building up fitness,” she says. “I’m so fortunate living here, the weather’s great this time of year. It was in college that Lauretta realised her cycling talents.

“I won the national road omnium in 2015 for the collegiate level cycling and got quite a few national medals and was then offered a spot on a domestic team in the US.” After getting good results and finding her feet she progressed to bigger and bigger teams before joining UnitedHealthcare – one of the country’s top cycling teams. She flourished in the role of domestique – a rider works for the benefit of his or her team and leader, rather than trying to win the race – and was given her own opportunity to shine at the Tour de Feminin in the Czech republic where she surprised herself winning a couple of stages.

110km ride taking in Carlsruhe, Mt Macedon, Hanging Rock, Newham, Pipers Creek and Kyneton is just another day of training (albeit a slow one) for Lauretta Hanson, from Fern Hill, as she prepares for the 2019 European cycling season.
