White after Labor Day? Definitely! Kate Bosworth breaks the rules by dressing up basic jeans with a light coat
hen she walked into a Vanity Fair party in LA last week wearing a snow-white coat, some might have thought that Kate Bosworth had made a fashion faux pas. White? Now? Yes! The 21-year-old actress understands that a light coat paired with dark jeans and a silky blouse is not only stunning, but a smart fashion strategy. White goes with just about everything, and in a heavier fabric (wool, bouclé, tweed) it stands up to — and out in — chilly weather. Beyond the party circut, Kate also made news last week as Revlon’s new face. Her ads will debut early next year.

Ben and Jen’s big night out hile the Boston Red Sox made history by reaching the World Series, Ben Affleck and Jennifer Garner created headlines of their own when they made their first major public appearance Oct. 23 at the first game between the Red Sox and the St. Louis Cardinals (Boston won, 11-9). The glowing couple, who entered via a VIP entrance, drew almost as much attention as the action on the field — but didn’t seem to mind the interest. “I haven’t seen Ben this happy for ages,” a high school friend of the actor tells Life & Style Weekly. “Between the Red Sox winning and winning Garner, life is good.”

Mischa Barton, Rob Lowe and Kristin Davis were among those who helped raise approximately $6 million for juvenile diabetes. “It’s nice to use your celebrity as a vehicle to bring awareness,” Jamie-Lynn DiScala told Life & Style Weekly. Jay Leno played host at the event, which included performances by Beyoncé, Faith Hill and Josh Groban, while Oprah Winfrey presented the Brass Ring Award to Halle Berry for excellence in charity work for diabetes awareness. emi Moore, Gwyneth Paltrow and Madonna were among the guests who feted a new book from Kabbalah co-founder Michael Berg on Oct. 21 in London. Demi, a long-time devotee of the mystical religion, hosted the party in honor of Berg’s book, Becoming Like God, in the Clubhouse room of Home House, a members-only club located in a plush 18th-century Georgian townhouse. Fellow party goers, including Donatella Versace, Valentino and Alexander McQueen, sipped cocktails and champagne and dined on a canapé menu of tuna wasabi, saffron risotto balls and lamb kofta. The secrets of
Desperate Housewives From sexy fashion to on-set scoops, Life & Style Weekly takes you behind the scenes of fall’s hottest — and most stylish — new TV show

ore than 20 million viewers are desperate to watch Desperate Housewives every Sunday night. It’s a little bit Knot’s Landing, a little bit Sex and the City, and 100 percent riveting — a nighttime soap bubbling with a dark and devilish sense of humor. You see, behind the perfect lawns and picket fences of idyllic Wisteria Lane — and behind the seemingly happy smiles of its inhabitants — lie a host of dirty little secrets. Try mystery, making whoopee (with an underage gardener!) on the dining room table and maybe even murder... and that’s just in the first few episodes. And then there are the clothes: sexy and chic, but in a real-woman way that makes you want to rethink your entire wardrobe before the next PTA meeting. “What Sex and the City did for single women, Desperate Housewives will do to liberate housewives,” star Eva Longoria tells Life & Style Weekly. “And not
‘‘
only housewives, but married women, single women — it’s a new voice of the modern woman.” THE CONTROVERSY Of course, not everyone’s a fan. Deeming the content too racy, some advertisers promptly pulled out — only to be replaced by new advertisers thrilled to pay twice as much. After all, in just the first three episodes, viewers saw that gardener jump out a window naked, and Teri Hatcher tumble into a bush — also nude. Which leads to the pressing question: Are the actors in the buff on set? Alas, no. “They have very good tricks,” says Randy Loveridge, assistant to show creator Marc Cherry. “They use pantyhose the tone of your skin and wrap it around the appropriate body parts, just enough for the actors to look naked.” THE ACTRESSES BEHIND THE HOUSEWIVES The real reason for the show’s success isn’t nudity (though it certainly doesn’t hurt). It’s perfect casting.
What Sex and the City did for single women, Desperate Housewives will do to liberate housewives
445.Cover Story 20-21.indd 3
Teri Hatcher, 39, stars as Susan, the single mom of a teen daughter. In real life, she’s, well, the single mom of a soon-to-be 6-year-old daughter, Emerson Rose, from her marriage to actor
Jon Tenney. “The role fits her like a glove,” the show’s casting director, Scott Genkinger, tells Life & Style Weekly, “and has really informed her performance.” But the similarities
TREND ALERT: new looks to steal from the show Thanks to costume designer Cate Adair, everyone will eagerly emulate the ladies of Wisteria Lane TV has the power to ignite a designer’s career; Jimmy Choo and Manolo Blahnik are household names, thanks to Sex and the City. These are a few of the labels everyone is sure to be touting, thanks to Desperate Housewives.
AIRY JEWELRY Teri Hatcher’s character has a down-to-earth quality that Cate wanted to reflect in her accessories. She commissioned LA jewelry designer Susan Grace to create one-of-a-kind pieces. run deeper. Much as Susan burned down her romantic rival’s house in the premiere, the former Lois & Clark star recently lit a sweater on fire by mistake in a hotel room. “Where we most relate,” Teri says, “is that I can try very hard to get something right — and it just goes wrong.” Eva Longoria, 29, has broken out as Gabrielle, who’s having a torrid affair with her 17-yearold gardener. Once wed to General Hospital’s Tyler Christopher, she’s now dating ’NSync singer J.C. Chasez, 28. Her character’s always getting gifts from her wealthy husband, but the actress is far more likely to give than to receive. “Eva is a beautiful person, inside and out,” Jimmy Mentis, her co-star in the upcoming movie Carlita’s Secret, tells Life & Style Weekly. “She bought the entire crew lunch on a number of occasions.” As constantly harried mom Lynette, 41-year-old Felicity Huffman — mother of two girls, 4 and 2, with actor William H. Macy — can seriously relate. “I’m
SOLVED! The showÕs biggest mysteries 1.
Who exactly is Mike DelÞno? “The guy really is a plumber,” insists the actor who plays him, James Denton. “He’s not a cop. Somebody in the neighborhood has done him wrong, and he’s there to find out who.”
2. Who will land Mike Ñ Edie or Susan? Chalk one up for Susan, but catfights are not out of the question. “The romance between Susan and Mike will continue to grow,” says creator Marc Cherry.
3.
WeÕve seen adultery, buried secrets and suicide. What about drugs? Oh, they’re coming. “Lynette will get hooked on her children’s ADD medication,” Cherry reveals.
pushed to the brink many times during the day,” she recently noted. On the other hand, Marcia Cross, 43, does not see eye-to-eye with perfectly put-together Bree. “There’s nothing about me that’s perfect,” the actress,
who recently got a master’s in psychology, told Oprah Winfrey. But the Melrose Place star, whose husband, actor Richard Jordan, died from a brain tumor in 1988, shares the loneliness of her character, whose husband wants a divorce. “I am desperate for a boyfriend,” she confessed. Nicolette Sheridan, 40, first tried out for the role of Bree. But the actress, who was married to Harry Hamlin, dated Michael Bolton and George Clooney, and is now seeing personal trainer Nick Soderblom, 39, seemed a natural fit for sexpot Edie instead — a decision she doesn’t regret. “Edie spices things up,” says Nicolette. “She’s the only one I would want to play.” In fact, says an insider, when Eva Longoria needs advice on how to play a temptress, she turns to Nicolette, who played bad girl Paige Matheson on Knot’s Landing. “Nicolette has been a femme fatale for so long,” the source tells Life & Style Weekly, “that she’s got a wealth of experience.” And luckily for us, she’s happy to share it. — Dan Jewel
THE LOOK
Sexy suburban style ome Monday morning, it’s the loudest watercooler topic: What are those crazy desperate housewives up to now? Beyond the backstabbing, cheating and other delicious plot twists and turns, viewers are buzzing about the show’s unique spin on style in the suburbs. According to the show’s costume designer, Cate Adair, each item of clothing is carefully selected to reflect the character’s personality, and what is going on in her life. So if you’re looking for a hint as to what might happen next, watch the clothes — not just the action.
C
Help for Susan: The Perfect Mac and Cheese On the premiere, we learned Susan canÕt even boil pasta. Jason Geiger, chef at Hudson Cafeteria, shares his recipe for what may be the best mac and cheese in NYC. Ingredients 1 lb pasta (elbow- or spiral-shaped) 11 tbs unsalted butter 6 tbs flour 3 ¾ cups whole milk 1 ½ cups grated Parmesan cheese salt and pepper to taste 1 tsp grated nutmeg ½ cup fresh bread crumbs 1. Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil and cook pasta about 6 minutes. Drain the pasta then dunk it into an ice bath. 22
2. In a medium saucepan melt 5 tbs butter over medium heat, then whisk in the flour and stir for three minutes. 3. Whisk in the milk and turn the heat to high until the milk starts to boil. Then reduce heat to low and stir until it thickens to a creamy consistency (about 2 minutes). Remove from heat, add nutmeg and season with salt and pepper. 4. In a large bowl, combine the cooked pasta, Parmesan cheese, 4 tbs butter and sauce. Spoon it into a 13x9x2-inch casserole dish, sprinkle bread crumbs on top, and dot with extra butter. 5. Cook at 350° for 30 mintues or until lightly browned on top. Serves 6-8 people

Despite reports suggesting she may have dropped out of school, a source close to her says the teen is committed to her studies and was simply focusing on her fall 2005 fashion line. She wants the line to reflect her signature bohemian style. “MK loves vintage stores” Judy Swartz, Senior V.P. Fashion of DualStar/Executive Designer tells us. “She’ll find a piece with a pattern she loves and she’ll either wear it or bring it into a design session.” And what can we expect from the holiday collection? “We’re doing a lot of denim with embellishments, rhinestones and patchwork,” Swartz adds. The bicoastal twins couldn’t be closer to their design team, which operates out of a studio located directly below their $7.3million West Village penthouse. “Once we were creating a sweater that had a design on it

and MK took the pencil out of the artist’s hand and said, ‘no, it’s more like this,’” says Swartz. “They both have a great sense of style.”
STAYING IN SCHOOL While overseeing all of her designs is demanding, MK, 18, is not leaving college for her career. The twins picked the Gallatin independent study program at NYU because of its flexible class and testing schedules. As a business associate of Mary Kate and Ashley tells Life & Style Weekly, “There’s an open line between the family and the school, so she won’t be behind in her work.”
RELAXING ON THE COAST But it wasn’t all work and no play for Mary-Kate on her recent trip to LA, as she sneaked in some much-needed R&R with her family, along with pampering from in-home spa treatments. She’s also continued her eating disorder therapy in LA — a nutritionist accompanied her. “Recovery is an ongoing process. It is very important to have supportive aftercare,” says Mary Ellen Webb, of the Avalon Eating Disorder Treatment Center. Pagnotta adds, “MK is being treated and looking after herself.” MOVING ON Although she’s had a tough year, MK has continued to recover from her illness while balancing the demands of school, work and an active social life. The buzz is that she’s back with ex-boyfriend David Katzenberg. “Mary-Kate knows that she is looked up to by millions of young people,” says a family friend. “She wants to get it right because she’s a role model.” — Amy Miller
With sister Ashley, Mary-Kate makes frequent promotional appearances for their Wal-Mart products
MK’s shopping therapy Like most teenage girls, Mary-Kate unwinds by shopping. In her case, however, it’s also a source of inspiration for her many ventures ART SUPPLIES At NYC’s Pearl Paint, MK picked up canvases and acrylic paints
MUSIC She has eclectic taste when it comes to tunes: Rolling Stones, Counting Crowes, Dave Matthews
JEWELRY One of her first scores after moving to New York was a $425-enameled Hermès bangle

n her slinky one-shoulder Ferré dress, Oprah Winfrey was radiant when she took the stage at the 16th Carousel of Hope Ball on Oct. 23. On hand as a featured presenter for the juvenile diabetes charity, it was clear that Oprah, 50, has finally found a winning formula for inner strength that shines through on the outside. “This year, Oprah has found some of the answers she’s wanted since her 20s,” a friend of the media mogul tells Life & Style Weekly. “She’s been transformed spiritually, and it shows in everything she does. She always says that what she has been given is priceless, and she gets joy from using her wealth and power to help others.”
“Oprah has found inner power, and it shows in every aspect of her life,” says psychotherapist Gilda Carle, Ph.D. “The sky truly is the limit.” SHAPING UP Most obvious is her weight triumph. In 1992 she hit the scales at an all-time high of 237 pounds. Now, the five-foot-seven Oprah is in the best shape of her life (at a svelte 150 pounds), thanks to a diet low in refined sugars and high in protein, vegetables and water. Her exercise routine includes daily 45-minute cardio workouts, 30 minutes of weight-training five days a week and Pilates, which she did every day this summer. “Pilates stretches

and strengthens the muscles, so you stand taller and have better posture,” explains Brooke Siler, owner of re:AB Pilates Studio in New York City. “Oprah has a leaner, longer look and her waistline looks lifted.” LOOKING HER BEST Oprah’s makeup artist for 15 years, Reggie Wells, praises her radiant skin, noting that eating well and drinking water are the keys to her healthy glow. She also receives bi-monthly facials. In the words of another pal: “Oprah’s life just kept getting better as she gained control of her appearance. Her attitude got more positive, as did her belief that she could change the lives of others.” — Amy Miller

JULIA ROBERTS
Getting ready The actress may be reuniting with her brother Eric as her due date draws near om-to-be Julia Rob erts has at least two reasons to smile — she got a bundle of gifts at her baby shower and she may be reconciling with her older brother Eric. Julia, who is expecting twins with husband Danny Moder, was given a baby bath, car seat and diaper bag, among other goodies, at the baby bash in Sherman Oaks, Calif., on Oct. 17. The actress, due at the very earliest in December, is also overjoyed that — for the sake of her babies — she may finally be ending the feud with her estranged brother after 13 years. A family friend tells Life & Style Weekly that Eric, 44, flew down to Julia’s estate in New Mexico for “a get-along session.” “It was at Julia’s request that Eric visited her,” says the pal. “With Julia ready to have her

babies, she’s tired of having a fractured family.” Already, Julia is a devoted aunt to Eric’s daughter Emma, 13, and helped her break into acting. Now she hopes to mend the rift with Eric. The friend adds: “The wounds haven’t totally healed, but now maybe he can share in the joy of being an uncle to Julia’s children.” Eric and Julia in 1986. TOM AND NICOLE
With his blessing Tom wishes Nicole well on her new relationship Nicole Kidman may have found true love again, and her former husband, Tom Cruise, is thrilled for her. The Birth star has reportedly fallen head over heels for divorced New Zealand tycoon Eric Watson, a friend of her brotherin-law and family back in Australia. And although Nicole’s spokesperson denies the romance, the two were spotted looking very chummy at a recent MGM Las Vegas boxing match. “If Nicole’s happy, then Tom’s happy,” says a source close to the 37-year-old actress, whose 10-year marriage to Tom ended in 2001. “It’s important for her to know that when she falls in love again, she does so with Tom’s blessing. More than anything, Tom wants Nicole to be happy.”

And now he’s researching fad diets to get back in shape. “He’s asking friends back in LA from the Morocco set to investigate diets for him, from Atkins to South Beach,” a friend tells Life & Style Weekly. “This is new territory for George — he’s never had to put on weight, and then lose it.”

This Englishman won’t be making the U.S. his home any time soon. Although he’s been spending much of his time in New York, Alfie star Jude Law plans to stay in London so his children can grow up just like he did. “I like my kids going to school in a system I know and understand,” he said. Besides, “their mom lives in England, so they’re better off there,” he comments.
ARNOLD SCHWARZENEGGER
Back in action Actor-turned-California governor Arnold Schwarzenegger filmed a political commercial last week. And it seems he misses the Hollywood scene; he arrived an hour before call time and was on his best behavior. According to a source, he “didn’t even ask for water.”
■ Sarah Michelle’s samurai souvenir The Grudge star had a tough time bringing home a souvenir for hubby Freddie Prinze Jr. after filming in Japan. In the end, she had the samurai sword she bought him delivered by FedEx. “If only the guy knew what he was carrying in that box,” she laughed.
Madonna took part in a Spirituality for Kids event in Tel Aviv
■ Matt gets political Although he told German reporters he’d pay $1 million to put John Kerry in the White House — so far, Matt Damon has donated approximately $25,000 to Democrats. ■ Katie’s Q.T. with dad The First Daughter tells Life & Style Weekly that she has a special father-daughter bonding ritual. “We go running together. My father got me jogging when I was 12 years old and that’s where we still have all of our good talks.”

On the town together Kirsten Dunst and Jake Gyllenhaal made their first public outing as a seemingly reunited couple on Oct. 21. The pair — who broke up in July after dating for almost two years — were spotted in Beverly Hills, shopping, kissing and dining at Il Fornaio, a romantic, rustic Italian restaurant.
Madonna will soon return to the big screen — sort of. The singer-actress-author is voicing a character in the upcoming $80-million computeranimated fantasy film, Arthur, based on a series of children’s books by feature film director Luc Besson (The Fifth Element). Madonna — whose fourth children’s book, The Adventures of Abdi, will be released this month — plays Princess Selenia, a friend of Arthur, who helps him search for a hidden treasure.
■ No fur for Charlize The South African beauty and her pooch Tucker are the focus of a new PETA campaign against fur. The actress is such an animal lover that she traded her Mercedes in for a SUV so she could cruise with her four pups. ■ Chad Michael’s charity game The WB hunk organized a charity football game with his One Tree Hill co-stars (including fiancé Sophia Bush) at a local high school in Wilmington, N.C., last Saturday to benefit two different charities. “I love football,” said Chad.

Scarlett’s sexy new ’do As Scarlett gets ready for her 20th birthday, she’s sporting a popular new style t the premiere party for her new film, A Love Story for Bobby Long, Scarlett Johansson wore freshly shorn bangs, seductively swept over one eye. Yes, bangs are a hot trend right now, but her new ’do, according to experts, may also be speaking louder than words. “By covering part of her face she’s holding something back,” says celeb hairstylist Mark Garrison. What could Scarlett be hiding? Up until now, she’s been tightlipped about her love life. She and actor Jared Leto have been conducting a transcontinental romance while he’s been filming Lord of The War in South Africa. Or could it simply be that her approaching 20th birthday (Nov. 20) is inspiring her to don a more mature look and outlook? “This style makes her look mysterious and sexier,” adds stylist Ward, who did her hair for the recent Calvin Klein Eternity Moment fragrance campaign. While Johansson keeps us guessing, the glamour of side-swept bangs is a definite.

So long, Charlotte
With Sex and the City behind her, Kristin Davis nabs a new makeup deal and sheds her super-sweet image ow! Is that Kristin Davis?” There were whispers when the former Sex and the City star walked into a star-studded party for 7Up Plus in New York last week. So much for Charlotte: Kristin strutted into the event wearing a slinky black chiffon Prada top and jeans, and looked positively radiant in sexy, dewy makeup. The reason behind her new style? Perhaps a desire to move beyond her prim and proper image and also to step into her new role: the face of Maybelline New York in a major ad campaign debuting in early 2005. “Kristin still looks pretty and polished, but she’s definitely moved from Park Avenue to Soho, from uptown girl to downtown girl,” explains Maybelline New York makeup pro Melissa Silver. But don’t think that all the “oohs and ahhs” and compliments are going to her head: “I consider myself to be pretty on a good day,” Kristin confided, “but I’d reserve the word beautiful for someone like Uma Thurman.”

Primer: the pros’ secret weapon A good foundation primer is the key to a radiant glow What exactly is primer? Before you paint, you prepare walls with primer for a flawless finish. Cosmetic primer works the same way. It’s a colorless pre-makeup gelcream that refines pores and evens out skin tone. How do I use it? Apply it after moisturizer and before foundation. It helps makeup glide on and stay put.
CHARLOTTE’S PRIM LOOK During her Sex and the City days, Kristin played it safe with matte skin and low-key lip color, a look that suited her character’s proper persona
An added plus: For a less “made-up” look, you can use primer alone (with no makeup) to fake perfect “natural” skin.

Q A
I just got a pair of suede boots, but I’m afraid to wear them because I don’t want to ruin them. What can I do?
A stiff brush helps keep suede’s luster Dasco; $5, Jim’s Shoe Repair, NYC
Q Can I still wear my open-toe shoes and sandals in the fall?
A “Yes!” affirms Jeffrey Kalinsky, owner of the famed NYC store Jeffrey. “The whole irreverence of wearing a summer shoe in winter is very cool. An open-toe pump for winter is not a risky proposition. Wear it with opaque tights and no one will notice.” Fuchsia tweed open-toe shoes say fall Chinese Laundry; $65, chineselaundry.com

Before wearing, have them protected with a sole guard and a waterproof spray, says Richard Ponce of Shoe Service Plus, a Manhattan shoe repair service enlisted by Manolo Blahnik and Gucci. The price of this service is about $34 at a good shoe service store. And be smart: “Avoid wearing suede on a rainy or snowy day,” adds Ponce.

Q Can I wear jeans to the office and not look sloppy?
A It all depends what you put with them. “Accessorize appropriately, with a beautiful blazer, sophisticated jewelry and heels or boots,” advises Laura Woodard, spokeswoman for cult denim brand Citizens of Humanity. Also, the cut and wash are key: Stick to darker hues and boot-cut styles for workdays. And holes are forbidden!

Is purple The answer — if you ask the A-list — is a definite yes. Rich, versatile and regal, it’s the color for fall tyle icon Sarah Jessica Parker has certainly been keeping her Manolo Blahniks busy post Sex and the City. The 39-year-old Emmy-winner, who’s been seen all over Gap billboards as the face of its fall campaign, has recently wrapped the romantic comedy Hating Her also starring Diane Keaton. At a public-school fund-raiser in NYC in October, she stepped out in the season’s hottest hue: purple. “Purple is like red, it’s a classic color and it has an undercurrent of luxury,” says celebrity stylist Patricia Field, who styled Sarah Jessica on Sex and the City. “It works best on classic silhouettes, such as a column dress.”

MEN’S TRENDS
Men pile Usher and Justin kick off the layered look
ayering a jacket over a sweatshirt and jeans is the ideal way to smarten up a casual look. Music stars Usher and Justin Timberlake are masters of the style, which is equal parts hip-hop and preppy. “Layering is also practical because you can take something off to suit the weather,” says celebrity stylist AlexandrA, who works with music stars like Duran Duran. Loose-fitting jeans are the perfect balance to a tailored jacket, which creates a slim line on top. Shoes are also best kept on the sporty side to seamlessly pull the look together.

Honeymoon in Fiji Britney and Kevin arrived at the airport in Fiji by private jet, then boarded a seaplane for a quick flight to their luxurious resort on exclusive Turtle Island

s with everything she does these days, Britney Spears set off on her honeymoon in a highly dramatic fashion. She posted a letter to fans on her Web site announcing her desire to take a break from the spotlight, then fled to the sun-drenched shores of Fiji. “She’s extremely excited to be married, and really wants to enjoy this newlywed phase,” says a close family friend. So last week, Brit and new husband Kevin Federline winged their way by private jet and seaplane to the powder-white beaches of the exclusive Turtle Island resort. Their agenda: a 10-day fairytale honeymoon. In her letter to fans, Britney announced she’s ready to “take some time off to enjoy life…to just chill.” She couldn’t have chosen a more perfect place for it. Turtle Island, one of a strand of tiny islands strung like pearls across the South Pacific, was made famous when Brooke Shields romped on its shores in her 1980 film The Blue Lagoon. A visit to the resort ensures laid-back luxury. Its 14 thatched-roof bungalows are intentionally rustic, with wood furniture, hand-woven ceilings and four-poster beds draped in mosquito netting. The scent of hibiscus wafts through the air, and housekeepers leave handwritten notes wishing guests a beautiful day. Britney and Kevin reportedly checked into the poshest bungalow on scenic Vonu Point Beach. The tab? $2,390-a- night.
Embracing relaxation and romance, Britney and Kevin escape to the secluded paradise of Turtle Island

urtle Island may just be the ultimate honeymoon destination. Couples soak up the sun on any of eight pristine private beaches in palm-fringed coves. The sky is impossibly blue, the water is a transparent turquoise and soft tradewinds temper the heat of the sun. Britney and Kevin aren’t the first amorous A-listers to hole up at the fabled five-star resort: Jessica Simpson and Nick Lachey honeymooned there, as did The Bachelorette’s Trista and Ryan. Couples can enjoy private picnic lunches of lobster and champagne (or whatever delicacies they crave: Trista and Ryan requested club sandwiches and fresh tropical fruits), unwind with

four-hand Lomi-Lomi healing massages, hike through nearby jungles, play volleyball in the shade of coconut trees or dive the coral reef, which is teeming with colorful tropical fish. All their needs are taken care of by an ultraattentive staff (there are 150+ personnel for 28 guests). Nightly dinner parties feature justcaught seafood and world-class wines served around a communal table, and guests sip kava, a favorite local drink, while the staff plays the guitar and sings or performs native dances. Charlize Theron, Ringo Starr, Eddie Van Halen and Rupert Murdoch are just a few of the famous guests who have joined in the surfside festivities. — Kathy Passero

The antidote to supermodel stress When she needs a break from her busy life, Naomi retreats to Jamaica’s Round Hill
N
aomi Campbell is known for strutting on the catwalk, but these days, “supermodel” is only one of the hats she wears. Following her recent stint on the Paris runways (she modeled in Chanel’s spring show), she jetted back to New York City to play party planner. Naomi orchestrated a lavish 26th birthday bash for boyfriend Usher at the Rainbow Room. She’s also been busy overseeing her public relations company, NC Connect, and promoting the European launch of her new fragrance, Sunset. But Naomi understands that all work and no play makes for a dull life. So she frequently escapes to the tropical tranquility and posh pampering of Round Hill in Jamaica, where she owns a treehouse cottage.
The resort boasts an ultra-indulgent spa, nestled in 10 acres of lush Caribbean gardens. It’s no wonder that Demi Moore and Ralph Lauren have been spotted behind the mahogany doors of this restored 18th-century plantation house-turned-spa. Spa manager Trudy Miller says celebs prefer to have their massages out in the open-air suites, where they can enjoy the intoxicating views of the sea and the cool Caribbean breezes. Treatments incorporate the delicious aromas and healing benefits of local produce: The Pineapple Body Buff uses pineapple and polenta to polish clients’ skin to a soft, satiny finish. DO IT AT HOME Indulgent pineapple skin treatments
A shoreside treatment at Round Hill utilizes fresh pineapple
Can’t make it to the Caribbean? Smooth out rough skin the Round Hill way with pineapple-based scrubs. The fruit contains the exfoliating enzyme bromelain, which brings out a natural glow. FACIAL 1. Mash ¼ cup of a fresh pineapple and massage gently into skin. 2. Leave it on for five minutes and then rinse well with cool water.
BODY MOISTURIZER 1. Combine a cup of uncooked polenta (or cornmeal) with the mashed fruit of one pineapple and 10 drops of vitamin E oil. 2. Massage gently onto skin, concentrating on rough areas such as elbows and knees. 3. Rinse well with warm water and follow with a good moisturizer (Round Hill recommends a shea butter-based cream, but cocoa butter is a good, less pricey option).

utside, Tribeca’s energy crackles and traffic fills the streets, but inside hot eatery Megu the bustle of New York City feels miles away. A glowing ice sculpture of a seated Buddha melts slowly into a pool of red rose petals, and above it a luminous crimson light shines from within a colossal temple bell. Guests are invited to ladle rosescented water over the Buddha and ask it to grant their innermost wishes. Celeb faces have filled Megu since it opened — Will Smith and wife Jada Pinkett Smith are regulars and Tom Cruise has devoured the crispy tatsuta-fried chicken. Megu’s food has been crafted as carefully as its décor. There are no faddish fusion dishes, just traditional Japanese food given a modern twist, and arranged artistically on plates specially chosen to complement it. Each entree is presented with a brief account of its history. Such attention to detail doesn’t come cheap (a cut of hybrid Kobe/Black Angus beef runs $180, while a tuna steak in white truffle oil is $100), but the stars clearly feel the meals are worth it. They keep coming back for more. Megu, 62 Thomas Street, NYC, 212-964-7777

Who wins the style race? When you take the campaign to the closet, both women have their strengths and weaknesses
n all matters political, the question is often conservative versus liberal, and the same can be said of our prospective first ladies’ styles. Though they favor similar colors and designers (both often wear Oscar de la Renta), Bush, always immaculately dressed and tressed, is a sharp contrast to her carefree, cosmopolitan competitor Teresa Heinz Kerry. Heinz Kerry, 66, is a good nine years older than Bush, but her style is more modern. Bradley Bayou, creative director of Halston and a fellow Texan, says: “Laura is definitely more of a conservative. Teresa has her own personal style, [but] I don’t see either of them setting any trends.”

Sienna steps into the spotlight hunderous cries of “Sienna, Sienna” could be heard outside the London premiere of Alfie recently, as scores of paparazzi clamored to photograph the stunning blonde Brit, who until recently was most famous for her hot romance with Jude Law. With starring roles in two buzzed-about fall films, Alfie and Layer Cake, Sienna Miller is suddently generating almost as much heat as her dashing beau. HAIR Mark Garrison The celebrated owner of the Mark Garrison Salon in New York City is the stylist of choice for A-listers looking for gorgeous locks that suit their features, body type, and hair texture perfectly. “Style is finding something that is unique and doesn’t look processed,” says Garrison. “It’s something that separates you from the rest of the pack.”
FASHION Shoshanna Lonstein Gruss This stylish girl-about-town scored a hit with Shoshanna, her namesake line of ultra-feminine clothing and swimsuits designed to fit real women’s figures. “Choosing a signature look that keeps in mind all your best qualities and your lifestyle is the surest way to have great personal style,” says Lonstein Gruss, who also believes confidence is key.

RAY Jamie Foxx, Kerry Washington
t’s been a good year for Jamie Foxx. First he was held hostage by Tom Cruise in Collateral, and now he gives a convincing, career-defining performance as Ray Charles, the blind singer and piano prodigy who merged gospel with blues to create a radical new sound. Ray follows the singer from the ’40s through the ’60s, as his career soared — and his personal life crumbled. Director Taylor Hackford doesn’t lionize Charles, taking on his womanizing ways and heroin habit. But he oversimplifies his demons, explaining them away as a means of coping with his little brother’s childhood death. (At the end, a vision of his brother actually tells him, “It wasn’t your fault” — and like magic, Ray kicks his habit!) Still, the movie truly comes alive in the electrifying performance scenes. Foxx may only be lip-synching, but as an actor, he hits all the right notes. ★ ★ ★ ★

BIRTH
SAW
Nicole Kidman, Lauren Bacall, Danny Huston, Anne Heche
Cary Elwes, Leigh Whannell, Danny Glover
Relax. Despite the squirminducing plot — Kidman’s character falls for a 10-year-old boy who claims to be her dead husband reincarnated — the most shocking part of Birth is how thoroughly uninvolving it manages to be. From the
92
lack of character development to the chilly look (which, along with Kidman’s haircut, seems to have been borrowed from Rosemary’s Baby), it always feels like a filmmaking exercise. But as actual human drama, Birth is stillborn. ★ ★ ★ ★
Two men wake up, chained to opposite ends of a bare room, with no clue how they got there. A tape instructs one of them (Elwes) that he must kill the other — or his family will die. It’s a great setup for this twisted, sa-
distic horror flick, in which, like Seven, a serial killer is punishing people for their perceived sins. Marred by terrible acting — Elwes, best remembered for The Princess Bride, is stiff as, well, a corpse — Saw is still an effective chiller. ★ ★ ★ ★

JUDE LAW’S LOOK IN ALFIE As he reaches into his closet for a bright pink Ozwald Boateng shirt one New Year’s Eve, Alfie Elkins announces: “If you ooze masculinity like some of us do, you have no reason to fear pink.” Alfie, played by Jude Law, is an Englishman in New York, a limousine driver and a relentless womanizer. His style is simple and classic. “Alfie has a unique style,” says costume designer Beatrix
Aruna Pasztor. “When he dresses down, he doesn’t wear your typical Levi’s jeans. He may only be able to afford one pair, but they would be designer Rogan jeans.” One of the movie’s signature looks is Alfie’s New Year’s Eve outfit. Pasztor explains: “We were looking for something that reflected the style of the ’60s. Then we added that pink shirt — which was a bold statement in itself — and silver cube cufflinks from Yves Saint Laurent.” — Lisa Armstrong

This week’s THE O.C. Thurs., Nov. 4, 8 p.m., FOX
elcome back to the O.C. It’s been three months since we last saw our favorite Newport Beachers, and in the second season premiere, they’re all still sulking. Ryan (Benjamin McKenzie) is stuck in Chino, working construction and living with the pregnant Theresa (Navi Rawat). Seth (Adam Brody), who sailed out of town last year, refuses to come home. Marissa (Mischa Barton) continues on her destructive path, drinking in the morning and drunk-dialing Ryan at night. And Summer (Rachel Bilson) tries to convince herself that she’s over Seth by hooking up with a new guy. Ah, teenage angst, just how we like it. The show’s trademark smart banter, camaraderie and self-referential tone are in place, and the actors have settled comfortably into their characters. There’s one welcome change: Ryan actually smiles — and strings together more than one sentence at a time. California, here we come! – A.M. ★ ★ ★ ★

NANNY 911 Wed., Nov. 3, 9 p.m., FOX Reality TV hits home — literally — in this new series. Each week, a strict British nanny moves in with an American family to whip unruly kids — and their parents — into shape. Head Nanny Lilian evaluates each household and assigns the best nanny on her team to the challenge. It’s like having your very own Mary Poppins, but with a little less sugar.
IDENTITY THEFT: THE MICHELLE BROWN STORY Mon., Nov. 1, 9 p.m., Lifetime This tense TV movie exposes the terrifying reality of identity theft in America. Michelle Brown (Kimberly Williams-Paisley) had a perfect life — until a stranger named Connie (Annabella Sciorra) assumed her identity and turned her world into a
nightmare. First Connie destroyed her credit — and then she became so obsessed with Brown that she dyed her hair and even got liposuction so they looked the same. But Brown battled back — as this movie effectively shows. – K.P. ★ ★ ★ ★

Television DREA DE MATTEO’S LOOK ON JOEY
Drea de Matteo, 31, stars as heavily hairsprayed hairdresser Gina, sister to Matt LeBlanc’s Joey Tribiani on NBC’s new Friends spinoff. Gina is tough and street smart, and though she wears some flirty, feminine outfits in soft colors, ultimately her style is sexy and edgy, in many ways similar to Matteo, who co-owns Filth Mart, a vintage rock ’n’ roll clothing store in NYC. — Lisa Armstrong

THAT ’70S SHOW SEASON ONE There’s more to That ’70s Show than Ashton Kutcher. In season one, Eric (Topher Grace) and his friends deal with parental issues and dating dilemmas — standard sitcom material improved by an amusing retro setting. Breakout stars Kutcher and Wilmer Valderrama are still groovin’ in season 8, which starts Nov. 3. – B.K.S. ★ ★ ★ ★

SAGITTARIUS
GEMINI
november 22 – december 21
may 21 – june 20
With visual Mercury in your sign, you’ll be seeing things from a different point of view this week. Shop for sunglasses that project your new outlook.
Your ruler Mercury is in Gemini’s partnership sector, so pay extra attention to your relationship now. Indulge your mate by wearing the clothing styles you know he loves.
CAPRICORN
CANCER
december 22 – january 19
june 21 – july 22
Right now you’ll benefit from reaching out to others. Plan an afternoon of shopping with a friend, or buy a little treat for a pal who you know could use some cheering up.
Cancers love tradition, but this week the stars want you to bust out of a rut. Try a new ethnic restaurant or buy hip animal print shoes to take you in a new direction.
AQUARIUS january 20 – february 18
SCORPIO
Aesthetic planet Neptune has a powerful effect this week, so it’s a great time to rethink your look. Hit the department store beauty counters and ask for a free makeover.
PISCES february 19 – march 20
CARMEN VALDES/RETNA
This week, Pisces’ desire for sophisticated pleasures is at the forefront. To indulge on a budget, dress to impress and meet a friend for appetizers and a glass of wine at the bar of a posh restaurant.
october 23 - november 21
From humble beginnings in Harlem, SEAN “P. DIDDY” COMBS transformed himself into a mega-mogul. His career is a classic example of Scorpio’s ability to make radical life changes — even name changes. Combs’ entertainment company, clothing line and restaurant make him one of today’s leading tastemakers. YOUR WEEK AHEAD: Despite feeling scattered lately, your ability to concentrate is actually heightened, so broaden your style-consciousness by attending a style- or design-related lecture or class. With warm Venus moving into your friendship zone, people will be happy to share insider knowledge with you — take advantage of it.
ARIES
TAURUS
march 21 – april 19
april 20 – may 20
Your mood is buoyant, so do mundane (but much-needed) tasks that would bring you down other weeks. Organize your kitchen, clean out your closet — you’ll be glad you did.
Taurus has a self-indulgent side and it’s looking for some attention this week. Treat yourself to a box of your favorite chocolates or share the happiness by bringing a box of cupcakes to the office to sweeten your co-workers’ day.
LEO july 23 – august 22 Right now you’re dreaming about travel to the tropics. Bring a relaxed island vibe into your life with a gardenia-scented candle or cocoa butter body lotion.
VIRGO august 23 – september 22 Virgo’s ruler, Mercury, in the transforming sign of Scorpio, urges you rejuvenate. Uncover soft, new skin with a scented body scrub, and baby your hair with a strengthening moisture mask.
LIBRA september 23 – october 22 Your style is unfailingly tasteful, but sometimes a bit too safe. The planets’ message for this week: Wear something nobody would expect from you and see what happens. L I F E & S T Y L E W E E K LY
