ELECTRIC VEHICLES SECOND TIME AROUND

At the turn of the 20th century fashionable American ladies drove Electric cars with high cabins to accommodate their large Edwardian hats. In Melbourne, at this time, the City Council had Electric trucks humming around the city, their battery charging provided free via the City’s Spencer Street Power Station. Alas, the Electric cars and Electric trams were banished from the American roads by “other interests” and switched off. In Melbourne Electric trams kept rolling and T Model and other makes took over our roads. Now the next generation of Electric vehicles will soon be silently gliding around our streets so pedestrians watch out. by KEVIN PATTERSON Nillumbik Historical Society “Electric delivery trucks stand at the Spencer Street Power Station”

Another Day, another dollar! The saying goes “Another day, another dollar”.

ergy-efficient lighting, which saved about $150,000 a year.

Well with your rates it should be “Another day, another 5 dollars”.

Cr Belinda Clarkson, the only councillor not to vote for the budget, said the council should follow Melbourne City’s example and produce a zero rate increase.

Let me explain. In early July the Diamond Valley Leader published a familiar story under the headline, “5.9% rate rise approved”: “Nillumbik Council has approved its budget for the 2012-13 financial year. In a 6-1 vote, councillors gave the green light to the draft budget, which contains a 5.9 per cent rate rise and charge increases.

But Cr Chapple said such a move would be “very irresponsible”. The following day I wrote to the newspaper:

Cr Chris Chapple said the rate increase was low, considering “a number of adverse impacts”, including the federal carbon tax, flood damage locally and bushfire works. “I am quite pleased with the outcome”.

“Dear Editor, In response to “5.9% rate rise approved” (DVL 4 July), my rates have gone up about 100% since 2004. In the same period, all consumer groups in Melbourne have increased by 23%. That 23% vs Council’s about 100%. Watch this space at the Council election in 3 months”.

Mayor Michael Young said the Council was not hit as hard by the carbon tax as other municipalities because of initiatives such as en-

The DV Leader did not publish it. Instead, they published a letter from Cr Young about spending millions more of your rate money of

the Eltham Town Square, which was constructed only a few years ago. So when you vote at the October Council election, if you want your rates to keep sky rocketing, vote for the existing six councillors, they have a proven track record for delivery on higher rates, in fact I believe they should be given a gold medal for the highest rates in Victoria. It’s your call. They only become councillors if you vote them in. Belinda Clarkson

Diamond Creek East Pre-School During the Winter months the children of Diamond Creek East Preschool kept busy with all manner of fun activities. The 4 year old group learnt all about dinosaurs and fossils through a visit from the museum. The children tried out their culinary skills by cooking fried rice and baking apple pies. The transit of Venus across the Sun provided an opportunity to talk to the children about our solar system. Inflatable planets, space shuttles, rockets, lunar vehicles, astronauts and many accessory materials were set up in a corner of the room as a wonderful visual aide. Once the children realised that the planets were not punching balls they got down to the play that we value at DCE Preschool: putting into practice some of our formal and informal discussions. The children learnt

that some planets are closer to Earth and can be seen in the night sky, whilst others we can only see with powerful telescopes. Many children were able to recall the names of the planets. The Princess and Pirate Dance Party held at Wellers of Kangaroo Ground provided the children, dressed in their favourite costumes, an opportunity to play and dance outside of the Preschool hours. The dance floor was awash with pink hues, fairy wings, buccaneers, and scallywags while Nut Bush City Limits, Bus Stop and the Limbo were taught to a new generation of enthusiastic dancers! As the children danced the parents were able to bid on a silent auction, unwind and build on new friendships. Children dressed as dingoes, wombats, koalas, emus, blue tongue lizards and platypus will be participating in the parade at the

Town Fair. DCE Preschool will represent the story of Wombat Stew, a delightful Australian story of how a naughty dingo was outwitted by the bush animal’s whist attempting to make wombat stew. With Spring on its way the children of Diamond Creek East Preschool and their families can look forward to more outdoor adventures and pastimes.

Diamond Creek – the future is bright for our young…… There are over 140 businesses in Diamond Creek and the products and services we offer are varied - from car mechanics, restaurants and cafes, service stations to supermarkets. Some businesses employ just a couple of staff, whilst others employ a large number of local people. Many of the staff are young adolescents from one of the many local high schools, embarking on their first job - to the delight of their parents.

“It is my desire to continue giving young people an opportunity to work and learn in our restaurant” says Wendy.

Being part of the local community is not just about serving coffees, stacking shelves, taking orders, or serving at a local hardware store, employing our young people is a commitment that is taken seriously. Some businesses, such as Platters Café and Restaurant in Diamond Creek, make it a mandate to employ local high school students and give them an opportunity to work their first job. Owners Wendy and Terry O’Connor ensure that their staff receive the ongoing training and support required to gain valuable skills. By providing the necessary training and providing mentoring by their current experienced staff, is not only great for their business but helps their staff learn new skills every day.

DIAMOND CREEK PRIMARY SCHOOL Diamond Creek Primary School has a wonderful school community that works together for our students. We are always improving the opportunities for each and every child. Diamond Creek Primary School provides the highest quality curriculum including a full range of specialist programs as well as an extensive variety of extra-curricular activities.

are knitting squares to make blankets for the needy. We have a wonderful connection with our local church and those church volunteers

Yes Diamond Creek Primary School makes learning fun! The School Concert’s theme this year was ”A Year In the Making” We were dazzled by some great dance moves and singing from all classes as they moved through the year using the seasons as theme. What a tribute to our staff and their never ending talents. The staff act was hilarious! Thanks for the laughs and great entertainment.

We have been involved in the Human Powered Vehicle Program for over ten years. It is an exciting program that encourages a team effort to produce, maintain and race a vehicle that reinforces energy conservation. This program is loads of fun and a great learning opportunity at the same time. 12 children make up the HPV team. They work on improving their fitness and endurance levels in the 6 months leading up to the race. They complete a long-term exercise program and compete in events such as the cross country and endurance days to test their stamina. The HPV team consists of 8 drivers and 4 pit crew who work together to demonstrate their commitment, fortitude and teamwork as they participate in the 24 hour endurance race, which is one aspect of the 3 day program held in Maryborough each year. Last Year Diamond Creek Primary School’s HPV team won the event in their division. This year the HPV team will be striving for the same result. Diamond Creek Primary School also offers students a number of other interests outside the classroom. Our Gardening Club is a busy group of children who work to beautify and maintain our school’s magnificent garden beds. They use the green-house and gardening shed full of tools to propagate and plant vegetables, herbs and native plants and participate in many environmentally friendly programs. They are currently developing a butterfly garden to attract more butterflies to our area. Knitting Club is another great activity where the children involved are being taught to knit and

Older men - New ideas

DIAMOND CREEK MEN’S DISCUSSION GROUP OM:NI Diamond Creek is enjoying a successful year and everyone is enjoying the generous and supportive ideals of the Group. The facilitation of the Group is being shared around and those who are perhaps a little reluctant are being encouraged to take a part they may have previously thought not possible. The Group joins in the discussions with enthusiasm and the participants find they are learning from the wide knowledge and experience represented at each meeting.

vibrant group of men meet at the Eltham Football Club Rooms every second and fourth Wednesdays of each month. The Diamond Creek, Eltham, Banyule and Greensborough Groups will be at the Diamond Creek Town Fair on 8th September. These four Groups met at Degani Cafe on 29th August to share lunch and to extend the lines of communication and friendship between older men of the Banyule and Nillumbik Council areas.

If you would like more in formation about OM:NI Mens Discussion Groups in the Diamond Valley area, come along on Town Fair day to chat to some of the Blokes or email kramplin@optusnet.com.au. Ken Ramplin

The after meeting BBQ continues to be a feature, and the colder winter days have not deterred the men from enjoying this extension of the days activities. The Thursday Cycling Group continues to grow and eleven men set off from Diamond Creek around 7.30am-8.00am and ride any where between 35 klms to 86 klms. They sleep well! A major achievement this year has been the establishment of a new Group in Eltham. A

Does anyone care about the safety on the roads in my area? Yes they do.! RoadSafe Metropolitan North Eastern Inc (or RoadSafe MNE) is a volunteer group that meets monthly to discuss local RoadSafe issues and implement potential solutions.

Child Restraint Checking RoadSafe MNE has recently supported a VicRoads approved Child Restraint Fitter to check child restraints are properly fitted at community events in the City of Whittlesea. We would like to encourage all parents and carers to ensure child seats and restraints are correctly fitted in your vehicle to ensure your child is as safe as possible in an accident. Look out for RoadSafe MNE and a Child Restraint Fitter coming to a community event in Nillumbik soon!

Pedestrians At this time of year, one of our major concerns is pedestrian safety and the use of electronic devices distracting them and potentially causing an accident. In order to reduce levels of accidents, we as a community, need to acknowledge the problem first and then modify our behaviours accordingly. We can achieve this through enforcement, but more importantly we can all work together using education, awareness and “buy in” from all road users. Levels of awareness can be raised and commitment towards reducing these accidents is possible by adopting some basic principles

Page 12

when travelling on our roads such as :Do’s • Do make use of pedestrian crossings, pedestrian refuges, overpasses, underpasses and traffic lights when crossing roads. • Do make eye contact with drivers when crossing the road to ensure that they have seen you. • Do cross the road in a straight line, this means that you are taking the shortest possible route and spending less time on the road. • Do keep scanning for traffic when crossing. • Do set an example for young people when crossing. • Do wear bright or reflective clothing where possible, especially at night and during inclement weather. • Do look ahead and anticipate the unexpected actions of pedestrians when they are crossing in front of you, particularly at night where alcohol consumption may be a factor. Don’t’s • Don’t be distracted by mobile phones, ipods or other devices whilst crossing the roads. Remember to use your ears as well as your eyes. • Don’t cross near the crest of a hill or on a bend. • Don’t step out from between parked vehicles.

Diamond Creek News

• Don’t wear dark clothing at night if you are going to be walking on roads. • Don’t assume drivers have seen you and will be able to take evasive action if required. RoadSafe MNE covers the Nillumbik, Whittlesea and Banyule municipalities and is a community road safety council. The group and its programs are funded through VicRoads after determining which areas/groups to focus on. RoadSafe MNE prides itself on the programs it has developed to assist in reducing serious injuries and fatalities on local roads; with a strong focus on the community the group encourage issues to be raised which are then addressed. If you are interested in road safety and would like to become a member of the group, or if you have feedback on a road safety concern in your area, please contact our group. DIAMOND CREEK EAST PRIMARY SCHOOL It’s nearly Term 4 and at Diamond Creek East Primary School we have been busy, busy, busy! Our hugely successful School Concert, “Rocking All Over The World” was held on Tuesday 21 and Wednesday 22 of August at Plenty Ranges Convention Centre in South Morang. The Concert was extremely colourful and entertaining, and showcased various countries from around the world, highlighting their music and culture. After six weeks of intensive daily rehearsals, our students were confident and enthusiastic performers on their performance nights. Special thanks must go to our “behind the scenes” team of teachers - Mrs Julie McCredden, Mrs Linda Hillbrick, Mrs Lisa James, Ms Sue Taylor and Mr Robbie Greig who ensured the Concert was a big success. We are already looking forward to the next School Concert in 2014. One of our Grade 6 students - Zoe M was selected to participate in an International Junior Elite Diving Competition in Bulgaria. Zoe attended the Competition with 11 other divers from her squad. Zoe achieved the incredible results of 11th on the 1m Springboard (out of 22 competitors), 6th on the 3m Springboard and 9th in the Platform Competition (out of 18 competitors). We are all very proud of your amazing achievements, Zoe. Congratulations.

DIAMOND CREEK FOOTBALL CLUB Celebrating 125 years - 1888 - 2013 Players and coaches come and go but one football icon has remained the same. Next year the Diamond Creek Football Club will celebrate its 125th year. In order to commemorate the occasion former committee members, coaches, players and supporters will be invited to join in the celebration at a gala event which is not to be missed on Friday, April 26th. 2013 at Ivanhoe Town Hall.

History Diamond Creek can boast a long, illustrious history which has seen us enjoy premiership success, in four distinct eras, in several different competitions. Formed in 1888 the club competed in the Whittlesea

District Football Association without winning any premierships. In 1906 the club was a founding member of the Bourke Evelyn Football League. The change of stamping ground obviously did the side good as it promptly claimed the inaugural BEFL flag followed by a second place finish in 1907 and another premiership in 1908. This was effectively the first of Diamond Creek's four eras of success. The second such era occurred during the 1920s. In 1922 Diamond Creek was one of seven foundation members of the Diamond Valley Football League. The club was a force in this new league from the outset, and went to take out the premierships in both 1924 and 1926. There then followed more than half

a century of predominantly mediocre showings which were finally brought to an end by the club's first, and to date only, back to back premiership triumphs in 1981 and 1982. The 1981 season had seen the DVFL split into two divisions, with both of the Demons' successes coming in the top flight. However, the last of the club's four eras of success involved a trio of second division flags, in 1992, 1998 and 2005.

SACRED HEART PRIMARY SCHOOL Preps Celebrate 100 Days Tuesday 31st July, 2012 was a milestone for our Preps as they reached 100 school days at Sacred Heart. P/1MG and P/1KG celebrated the preps’

achievements during the day using their five senses to explore the number 100. Their celebration day started with listening, singing and dancing to the 100 Macarena. The students then went outside to find 100

numbered counters that were placed around the play grounds and bring them back to the number chart. Back inside and it was 100 star jumps before looking at 100 jellybeans inside jars. Necklaces were made with 100 cheerios and they also made 100 glasses. Containers filled with 100 scented cotton balls were passed around for the students to smell. Of course, you can’t have a celebration without a party. There were 100 marshmallows drizzled with chocolate, 100 pieces of fruit, cupcakes, cookies, 100’s & 1000’s sandwiches (and the list goes on). It was a great day and at the end of the day the preps had plenty to share about the number 100 with their families. ENROLMENTS for 2013 are now open. in raising awareness of women’s cancers and helping us raise funds. A large group of 4C members met at Samson’s Winery for a Women’s Wellness and Wellbeing day on Sunday the 9th of September. We were able to have RE-Med from Bolton Street come in and run the day for us in a private function room at Samson’s Winery because the community so generously fund raised. SAVE THE CHILDREN DIAMOND CREEK BRANCH Hello and a may we all join together in welcoming spring and trusting that the sun will shine on the Diamond Creek Town Fair. As you know our branch has been together for nearly fifty years so our committee have been known to have a ‘senior moment’ or two in these latter years. We discovered we were one year early in our planned 50th Birthday celebration for September 3, 2012 at the Uniting Church Hall. As the Diamond Creek News will not be distributed before this date we sincerely apologize to anyone that we have not been in touch with to let them know this event had to be cancelled. Our fifty years since formation will not be till 2013 so we will try again next year. We intend to have a few committee members in attendance on September 3 at the venue in case someone turns up expecting a party. We held a five day stall at the Greensborough Plaza in early May and raised $1,200. From 13-17 August we were in attendance at the Warringal Shopping Centre and the amazing best total ever for a five day stall was $2,600. We have forwarded $13,000 to head office for projects here in Victoria and Fiji. Before we close we send our best wishes to Mrs. Nese Roberts who is recovering from a broken hip. Nese is presently at Royal Talbot stoically facing up to rehabilitation again, and coming through with flying colours. Nese was a founding member of our Branch and still supports us and takes great interest in Save the Children. Congratulation also to Nese on her 96th Birthday spent at Royal Talbot. Other residents and staff certainly enjoyed that giant Birthday Cake you shared with them. Au revoir till the Christmas Edition of the Diamond Creek News. Come to the Fair and celebrate Diamond Creek, a great place to live. Jill Pittle

2012 Diamond Creek Rotary Town Fair After careful examination of the surfaces on both Coventry and Marngarook oval, and after giving consideration to the short term weather forecasts, we have decided that it will not be possible to run the Diamond Creek Rotary Town Fair 2012 on the proposed date of 8th September. After extensive discussions with council and the affected organizations , we have decided to POSTPONE THE EVENT TO 24th NOVEMBER. The grounds are currently too wet to use for any vehicle movement. The ovals would suffer too much damage if used in these conditions. Having previously tried to run the event in quite wet conditions, we also know that the result it is not good for stall holders, activities or participants. Many have already their expressed concern. By rescheduling to the November date, we hope to have better weather, so that the event can be better enjoyed by all participants. This rescheduling will not be welcomed by everyone, but we believe that this is in the best interests of the majority. We are also taking steps to replan the usage layout of the

grounds, to hopefully achieve an “All Weather event. More details of the new layout will be available shortly. We had to reschedule the event two years ago for similar reasons, and after a lot of work the November date was a great success. We learnt a lot from that year and expect apply those lessons to this year as well. The feedback from a many of stallholders and participants, was that they actually preferred the November date. We will still have all of your favourite activities will be there: Carnival rides, lots of free entertainment and activities, craft stalls, novelties, food stalls, free demonstrations and displays, and much more. All updated forms and much more information will be available on our website www.diamondcreektownfair.org.au within the next two weeks. The website is a working document and is continually being updated as information comes to hand. We have made this decision nearly three weeks before the event to minimize the in-

convenience this causes. We hope you understand the reasons and are not too badly affected. Should you for any reason be unable to participate in the Diamond Creek Rotary Town Fair 2012 on the new date of 24th November, then please contact me at townfair@rotary9790.org.au and we will be happy to give a full refund of any fees paid. Thank you for your understanding and we look forward to your involvement in this great local event!

What’s Happening at the… Diamond Creek Bowling Club HOLIDAYS ARE OVER… With Pennant fast approaching, our travellers have returned to the clubroom with stories of the bowling competitions in and around Merimbula, the great time they had and how wonderful the weather was. While we love to hear their news, those who stayed at home are not really that interested in the talk of the wonderful weather. In preparation for the new bowling season, we had our Clean up Day on Sunday 25th August. Our happy group of volunteer members gardened, painted, washed, polished, and tidied. A big thankyou, your help was much appreciated. Now the Club is ready to enjoy our Opening Day on Saturday 25th August. We have entered 4 teams in the Saturday Pennant competition and 3 teams in the Tuesday competition. We look forward to a successful year.

BBQ dinner, and big prize money to be won. So make up your team of four (you can include emergencies) and contact Graham Guy on 0411 798546 or email gusguy@bigpond.net.au with your entry or any queries. It is a lot of fun but get your entries in fast as the competition is limited to 16 sides. Diamond Creek Bowling Club is a friendly place to come and enjoy a game of bowls. If you would like to visit our club you would be made most welcome. For any Information… please phone the club on 9438 1717. Our Clubrooms are at Recreation Reserve, Diamond Creek. SOCIAL COMMITTEE… Our new Social Committee have been busy planning and organising activities. WINTER BOWLS RESULTS… While our three bowls triples ‘Cold Cash’ competition is nearly finished and bowlers are entering their teams in the soon to start ‘Hot Cash’, the Saturday afternoon Social Bowls has ended. Congratulations to our winners… First place Eric Macklin, second Jean Robinson, and third Wally Nitschke. UPCOMING TOURNAMENT… Once again, we are hosting our Valley Maintenance 2 Bowl Triples Tournament. This is to be held on Friday 21st September. Diamond Creek Primary School Walking School Bus. The Walking School Bus program is still going strong with many trained volunteers volunteering their time to walk the children safely to school. The walkers love the stroll to school as they can chat to their friends and the adults along the way whilst exercising. As we all know exercise is an important

part of our everyday life and what better way to have a healthy start than to walk to school! Just a friendly reminder to all our drivers pedestrian safety is of paramount importance to us all. We appreciate those drivers who obey the law and do 40 km in a school area. This is a mandated speed outside schools that are not on main roads. Another important point is that when there is a crossing supervisor on a crossing cars can not go around people they must stop until the pedestrians have crossed the entire road. A few near misses on the Collins Street and Main Street intersection have occurred because road users are complacent and do not obey the law. Thanks to all of those drivers who do keep us safe. Give us a wave when you next see us walking.

Meeting with VicRoads At a meeting with VicRoads, I raised concerns about Yan Yean Road. For the past two years I have been trying to get Whittlesea City Council to fund the turning lanes at all the intersections along Yan Yean Rd, from Kurrak Rd Yarrambat to Bridge Inn Rd Doreen. The cost of these upgrades, are to be covered by Development Contributions, from the Whittlesea developments. Finally Whittlesea Council are talking to Nillumbik about the proposed upgrades, that are well and truly overdue.

Doreen and Mernda without appropriate road upgrades and public transport like a railway line, was/is poor planning. As the State government has not committed funds to the upgrades from Diamond Creek Rd to Kurrak Rd (could be 10 years off), I have asked VicRoads to provide pedestrian refuges at Plenty Store, and Worns Lane in Yarrambat to assist school children to cross these

dangerous sections of Yan Yean Rd. To improve traffic flow in the 80km zone in front of the BP Service Station on Diamond Creek Rd, I have also asked for a left turning lane into the BP. Belinda Clarkson.

The population of Doreen has grown 207%, from 3500 in 2006 to 10,889. The following details are from the “Infrastructure Agreement” between Whittlesea City and Nillumbik Shire Council’s, Gateway Concepts Pty Ltd and Landano Pty Ltd, (10 April 1997): One intersection, I believe was overlooked, is at Laurie Rd Yarrambat. During peak times, traffic is already gridlocked, by the time upgrades are actioned, I believe the traffic will be unbearable. In my opinion, the growth of
