EARLY DAYS OF THE DIAMOND CREEK OP SHOP Mr Charlie Milthorpe is the first know occupant of the building that houses the Op Shop. Charlie’s father and family arrived in the district from Bournemouth, England, in 1870 and took up a local property. In the 1880’s the family moved to NSW but Mr Milthorpe’s son Charlie, moved back to Diamond Creek as an orchardist with a property in Broad Gully Road. His quinces won first prize at the Diamond Creek Horticultural Show of 1905. He was also a local carrier and store keeper occupying in the op shop building for a number of years as a railway agent and carrier. At that time there was a double fronted
wooden shop next to the Op Shop building. It was later demolished to make way for the creation of Brooke Crescent, making the Op Shop a corner property. On the east side it acquired a new neighbour when Charlie Milthorpe married Helen Rose, the local baker’s daughter. He built a weatherboard house next door and their first child was born in 1917. When Charlie retired from business, the next tenants, if any, are unknown. After World War 2, local identity, Bill Wadeson ran an electrical repair service there and a visiting solicitor used its rooms for meeting with clients. By 1962 Robertson’s Estate Agency
Milthorpe Store with double gable roof, to the left is the residence and to the right is the carrier business.
was on site to be followed by the Op Shop. Charlie Milthorpe’s house survived until the 1960’s with the last occupant being Mrs Pym. The house next door was later demolished and replaced by a portable class room for displaying more stock. In earlier days, as an office for carrier Charlie Milthorpe, a useful service was provided for many locals. This little shop is part of Diamond Creek social history. Now with the recent re-opening of the Op Shop in the new building next door it will continue to serve the community with the help of its loyal volunteers.

DIAMOND CREEK EAST PRIMARY SCHOOL It’s halfway through the year and autumn certainly has arrived! While we have all been shivering through a crisp Melbourne autumn, the students and teachers at Diamond Creek East Primary School have been keeping warm with lots of exciting activities. Our Challenge students (Grade 3/4) have recently returned from an exciting, but very different camping experience. The students travelled by train into the city, where they visited the Melbourne
the classrooms at DCE, with our Term 2 Inquiry Units in full swing. Our Discovery 1 (Prep) students are learning all about ‘Healthy Bodies’ this term. Discovery 2 (Grade 1/2) are exploring the world of ‘Minibeasts’ and visited Edendale Farm in Eltham. The Challenge (Grade 3/4) students are learning about the history and landmarks of Melbourne in their unit and the Enrichment (Grade 5/6) students are investigating the famous ‘Gold Rush’ in Melbourne. There is always something exciting happening in our classrooms.

Our students continue to enjoy the ‘Kids in the Kitchen’ program at school. This term, it has been the Prep’s turn to cook healthy and delicious dishes, including vegetable very exciting and fun programs. Aquarium before embarking on a huge walk around the streets of Melbourne to see many of the city’s well known landmarks, such as the Melbourne Cricket Ground, Parliament House, Captain Cook’s Cottage, Federation Square and China Town. The students stayed at the Urban Camp in Royal Park for one night and enjoyed learning some circus skills that evening. The following morning, everyone was up early for a fun filled morning at the Melbourne Zoo. Lots of tired students and teachers travelled back on the train to Diamond Creek that afternoon. For some students, it was their first visit to the city and many of the students visited Melbourne landmarks they had never seen before. The school camp was an exciting accompaniment to the Grade 3/4 Inquiry Unit - ‘MelbourneOur City’ and everyone returned back to school with lots of new experiences and information. Lots of exciting learning is happening in
stacks and blueberry pancakes. Yum! One of the programs we are most proud of at DCE is ‘DCE Live’. This is the weekly television show that is shown throughout the whole school and is written, produced and performed by the Enrichment students. Recently, while the Grade 5/6 students were at camp, our school’s Assistant Principal, Mrs Marg Chapman, decided to trial a new ‘DCE Live’ show, called ‘The Challenge Show’. This is a new school television show written and performed by our Grade 3/4 students. The pilot episode was a big hit with students and teachers and it has been decided that DCE will air not ONE, but TWO school television shows each week. The two shows have different segments and different students presenting each episode. ‘The Challenge Show’ is prerecorded each week. ‘DCE Live’ is broadcast through the ‘Interactive
‘Open Day’ was held on Wednesday 22 May, 2013 and was once again a very successful day for Diamond Creek East Primary School. Our wonderful and confident Junior School Councillors conducted school tours all day. During the day we highlighted our many and varied school programs such as ‘Kids in the Kitchen’, ‘DCE Live’ and our school rock band ‘Smash Hits’ played a few songs. Visitors to our school were also impressed to observe the many different leadership opportunities that are available for our students at DCE, including Junior School Council, House Captaincy and Peer Mediation. If you were unable to make it on ‘Open Day’ and you are interested in seeing our school in action, please contact the school office on 9438 1413 to arrange a time. We look forward to seeing you. Ness Reserve Preschool There are lots of exciting things happening at Ness Reserve Preschool this term. Our mums were spoilt for Mother’s Day this year with the children hosting an afternoon tea. The children made scones of all shapes and sizes and presented their mums with beautiful, painted wooden bangles or handmade flowers. Our 4 year old Red Group are exploring dramatic play so it is not uncommon to find lions, unicorns, dogs and cats wandering around the place! Drama Tool Box will be visiting Red group in June to further
encourage this important aspect of children’s play. Our 4 year old Blue Group are investigating motion, using pendulum painting, marble run and hammering to test their theories. The Blue Group children are off to Jets Gym to use their own bodies to explore motion. Our 3 year old Yellow Group are discovering dinosaurs. They have been playing dinosaur puzzles and games and outside in the yard you’ll find habitats being created in the garden and sandpit. There have even been sightings of a kidosaurus or two stomping around! Our
3 year old Green Group are exploring colours. They had a Rainbow Day where the children dressed up in lots of colours and made rainbows and butterfly prints by experimenting with mixing different colours. Ness Reserve Preschool has been awarded a grant to establish a Wicking Vegetable Garden. This is wonderful news and something that will provide many opportunities for the children to explore environmental education through propagating, planning, growing and harvesting plants. Work on the garden will start in the next few weeks. Our new website launched this week and we are very grateful to Lisa for her time and the wonderful site she has created. It is great overview of the preschool and is a valuable resource for current and future families. www.nessreservepreschool.com.au

Danielle Green MP - State Member for Yan Yean Little in State Budget for Diamond Valley & now Austin Hospital threatened by merger The State Government has delivered its third budget. Aside from partially funding a high school for Doreen, there was little joy and more pain for our area. The budget contained further education and health cuts, with a looming merger between the Austin and Northern Hospitals. It is rumoured that this forced merger will involve ward and departmental closures, including the potential selling off of hospital sites. Given the growth in population in Whittlesea, we need to be growing our health services not cutting them. There were no funds for extra trains on the Hurstbridge lines. The former Labor Government funded stabling at Eltham to enable this, instead funds are being diverted to the Frankston line to shore up crumbling government support there. There was $0 for local roads, no sign of any new bus services and residents will therefore have to deal with congestion on Yan Yean Road for yet another year. Doreen SC Partially Funded In a victory for the community, the State Government has caved into local pressure and partially funded a high school at Doreen. Congratulations to all the local campaigners, who have helped make this a reality. Who says people power doesn’t pay off! In total over 4,000 petition signatures were submitted to Parliament.
the NDIS by the Napthine Government. The Government purports to support the principles of universality behind the NDIS but is instead subjecting Victoria’s most vulnerable to poverty. If you know of anyone affected by this, please contact me. This is will run over the next six months and it’s real life stories that will hopefully force the Government to see sense. The Smouldering Stump Campaign It was a bitter sweet experience to be at the recent launch of the Smouldering Stump Campaign in Diamond Creek. I pay tribute to the work of Lesley Bebbington and all schools doing amazing work, supporting bushfire affected kids and teens in Nillumbik and the wider Kinglake Ranges. Their tenacity and willingness to continue fighting despite all the odds is breathtaking. It is a disgrace however that this campaign is having to be run at all. It is only due to cruel Liberal Government cuts to the Kinglake Youth Group and local schools for support and counselling, that this community has to go cap in hand to the wider Victorian community.
community rebuilds and recovers, the need for Government support will change and adapt, it is clear however that these callous cuts are too soon, too deep and affect the development of some very traumatised young people. Indeed four years on an estimated 50% of bushfire affected school children are still suffering Post Traumatic Stress Disorder so ending funding for vital psychological support is just plain wrong. Please go to http://www.mindbodyevents.com.au to support this local campaign for bushfire affected kids. In the meantime, the Government needs to ensure that it properly funds school buses for kids already accessing other high schools in the Diamond Valley from Doreen. At present many of these services are overcrowded, with some kids unable to obtain a seat. $44 million Rent Hike For Disabled Supported Accommodation The State budget hits people with disability with fee increase at Government run supported shared accommodation by a whopping 66%. At present residents pay 4857% of their disability support pension. The Government is increasing this to an eye watering 75% plus all their rent assistance. This will leave many vulnerable people potentially penniless with little funds left to pay for day services and incontinence aids let alone ‘luxuries’ like a cinema ticket or the odd cup of coffee. This action completely negates any goodwill shown by the belated sign up to

PREVENTABLE FIRES DESTROY LOCAL PROPERTIES Diamond Creek Fire Brigade have attended two major house fires recently. Both of these incidents resulted in major loses, with one home completely destroyed. Fortunately, no one was home at the time of either fire, but both these incidents were preventable and remind us all just how easily house fires can start and how quickly homes can be engulfed and destroyed. House fires are unfortunately prevalent, with more than 4,500 such fires occurring in Victoria every year. CFA attends more than 2000 of these. There are, however, a number of simple steps we can all take to ensure our homes and families remain safe this winter. Some of the most important actions include – • Ensure your chimney and flues are clean • Keep flammable items such as curtains and clothing at least 1 metre away from all heat sources • Ensure heating and other appliances are in good working order and being used correctly • Do not overload power boards • Clean the lint filter in your clothes dryer after every use • Do not leave appliances (the clothes dryer, for example) operating when you are out • Never leave cooking unattended • Ensure children are supervised around open fires, heaters, cooking and other sources of heat

Ensure electric blankets are turned on no more than 30 minutes before going to bed and turned off once in bed Never smoke in bed Ensure smoke alarms are installed in all appropriate places (including bedrooms) and are in good working order (batteries should be changed every year, units should be vacuumed and tested every month) Ensure you have a home fire escape plan which clearly identifies at least 2 exits from the home Ensure everyone at home knows the escape plan and where they should meet once they exit the home (the mailbox, for example) Ensure you have practiced your home fire escape plan Never deadlock yourself inside the home without a key in the deadlock to ensure a quick escape Always keep lighters and matches out of the reach of children Ensure you install and know how to use fire extinguishers and fire blankets

everyone. Many of the children have now been helping to move the soil and scoria stones that were left behind.
The children started to bring in their family photos which we looked at during formal group times, as well as individually in smaller groups. It was during these times that we explored concepts on oldest, youngest, how manychildren, girls, boys, as well as the similarities and differences within our family groups. The displayed pictures also provided an opportunity for 2 or 3 children to talk to each other about the content of the photos. Children were encouraged to ask the owner of the photo a direct question and listen to the response.
Over the past few sessions the 3 year old children have been exploring the playdough, making pizzas. At times we have had 8 and 9 of the 14 children crowded around the table. They started by rolling the bases with the rolling pins and cutting the cheese with knives. It was interesting to see how the fine motor skills they had used to cut our veggies for our pumpkin soup were transferred to this play. The children talked amongst themselves sharing their ideas about their pizzas and discussing what their favourite toppings were. Some liked olives, while others liked salami and meatballs. With each new session came new ideas about how they could make them better and by putting different tools and equipment on the shelf for them to make their own choices the pizzas have become much more creative.
It was very upsetting to come to Kinder one Monday morning to discover that our veggie garden beds had been stolen! Along with our hose, garden broom and rake. One child said it was “disgusting”, another said she was “angry”, and some boys said they would look for clues……. Yes, it is a disappointing experience for

TENDER FOOT SELF HELP SCHOOL Rotarians from the Rotary Club of Diamond Creek are keen to make a difference in the lives of homeless, orphaned or needy children from the slum community of Kangemi, Nairobi, Kenya by supporting the Tender Foot School. The school is a non-government community based project which aims to provide basic nursery and primary education to eighth grade as well as homely skills, personal hygiene, food,
clothes and love to the children who are living in especially difficult circumstances. The school started in 1996 with just eight street children being fed, clothed and taught in a corrugated iron shack in a slum on the outskirts of Nairobi. Through the sheer hard work and determination of Esther Wamai, now the school’s Head Teacher, Tender Foot grew into a functioning primary school for the Kangemi slum children.
The community of Kangemi has been directly affected by HIV / AIDS and as a consequence many of the children are homeless, orphaned or only have one parent. In 2004, a child sponsorship program was initiated by the Rotary Club of Emerald and Districts and this program has now been included as part of the Rotary Club of Diamond Creek’s International Program. $295 will sponsor a child for twelve months. The sponsorship scheme will enable individual sponsorship, encourage correspondence from the student and provide information updates by the school on the progress of the child. A team of Diamond Creek Rotarians are planning to visit the school next year and meet the children whom they sponsor. If you would like to know more about the Tender Foot School, please contact Greg Adams on 0419355842.

DIAMOND CREEK MEMORIAL KINDERGARTEN The cold weather has finally hit, but the children aren’t complaining. The Kinder’s new outdoor deck equipped with café blinds and heating has seen to that. And what a difference it’s made! Rain, hail or shine, the children can enjoy this space. It’s a fabulous addition to the Kinder, particularly on a cold, wet day – lunch can still be enjoyed outside, making a welcome change of scene for the children who attend full day programs. And the outdoor woodwork bench is now well and
truly getting the workout it deserves. What a hit it’s been with the kids! The cooler weather has heralded some new arrivals at the Kinder. Yes, the chicks have just moved in! The children are looking forward to watching them grow into chickens and are already planning a list of who will be collecting the eggs each day! May is proving to be a month of celebration at the Kinder. It kicked off with the 4 year old groups serving their mothers dinner as a special Mothers’ Day treat. The mums enjoyed a meal of quiche, veggies and salad, cooked with some yummy fresh ingredients hand-picked from the Kinder’s veggie patch! Dinner was followed by a concert from the children and a presentation of some beautiful hand-crafted gifts. A big thanks to May, Francess and Tracey for making the night so memorable. The 3 year olds also celebrated Mothers’ Day, enjoying a morning tea at the Kinder with their mums. They, too, put on a lovely little show with some truly memorable singing and
dancing. This coming weekend the Kinder is celebrating May Hale’s 50th year teaching kindergarten in Diamond Creek. Wow! Congratulations May! We’ve got a celebratory dinner planned for Saturday evening, with a crowd of past and present families attending. Sunday promises to be an afternoon of family fun at the Kinder, with face painting, jumping castle, adventure playground, sausage sizzle and much, much more! And it wouldn’t be a celebration without cake. So all attending will be pleased to know there will be a celebration cake at both events!

Year 6 Leadership Project Our Year 6s continue to raise funds and collect school equipment as part of their leadership project efforts to help a disadvantaged school in East Timor. Partnering up with Doreen Primary School and many of the other small schools in the area, the combined efforts will hopefully see a selected school in East Timor be assisted with school furniture, stationary and funds! How fantastic! Well done Lily, James, Oliver and Daniel.
We have had an unbelievable amount of inquiries regarding enrolments for 2014. I need to advise all interested families, including those with siblings, to please collect an enrolment pack ASAP. Each year we set a target number of enrolments and aim to cater for local residents first. If our enrolment target is reached, we may need to direct families to other local schools. It is a wonderful position to be in, and a credit to the staff, students and community. Please enrol now! Follow us on Twitter @WATTLEGPS And/or visit our new website at www.wattlegps.vic.edu.au/

DIAMOND CREEK PRIMARY SCHOOL It is hard to believe that we are almost half way through this year. Our Preps don’t seem that little anymore and have grown up so much since they first began in February. The Preps are now so independent and don’t rely so much on their Year 6 Buddies. The Buddy program does of course continue and the Year6’s get as much out of having their little Buddy as do the Preps. It is great to see
The senior school has been enjoying dancing and learning some great moves with the Footstep Dance Program. It is a great way to exercise and have some fun along the way. This program has been well received by the students and is a great way to implement the Creative Arts and Physical Education aspects of our Australian Curriculum.
Our lunch time clubs have been a success with the students. We have a knitting Club, Chess Club and a Garden Club. The produce that has been planted is always enjoyed by the Garden Club. We would like to thank Bunnings for helping us out with the Mother’s Day gifts that the children made over two lunchtime sessions. I know that many Mums received a beautifully painted pot plant to enjoy forever. Tours of our school during Education Week in May were well attended. The dedicated staff continues to put in a magnificent effort for the benefit of our students. If you would like a private tour please feel free to call and arrange a tour with our Principal Mrs Helen Micallef. 9438 1108 or email diamond.creek.ps@edumail.vic.gov.au
them working together and learning together. The whole of the junior school went to Werribee Zoo in May. This excursion was thoroughly enjoyed by all the students. The ride around in the safari bus seeing all of the animals in their habitats was a highlight for most of the children especially after they had been learning about different habitats as part of their Inquiry Learning.

Does anyone care about the safety on the roads in my area? Yes they do.! RoadSafe Metropolitan North Eastern Inc (or RoadSafe MNE) is a volunteer group that meets monthly to discuss local RoadSafe issues and implement potential solutions.
Child Restraint Checking RoadSafe MNE has recently supported a VicRoads approved Child Restraint Fitter to check child restraints are properly fitted at an immunisation session in the Nillumbik Shire. We would like to encourage all parents and carers to ensure child seats and restraints are correctly fitted in your vehicle to ensure your child is as safe as possible in an accident. Look out for RoadSafe MNE and a Child Restraint Fitter coming to selected community events, or email RoadSafeMNE@gmail.com to find out more.
Pedestrians At this time of year, one of our major concerns is pedestrian safety and the use of electronic devices distracting them and potentially causing an accident. In order to reduce levels of accidents, we as a community, need to acknowledge the problem first and then modify our behaviours accordingly. We can achieve this through enforcement, but more importantly we can all work together using education, awareness and “buy in” from all road users. Levels of awareness can be raised and commitment towards reducing these accidents is possible by adopting some basic
Page 24
principles when travelling on our roads such as :Do’s • Do make use of pedestrian crossings, pedestrian refuges, overpasses, underpasses and traffic lights when crossing roads. • Do make eye contact with drivers when crossing the road to ensure that they have seen you. • Do cross the road in a straight line, this means that you are taking the shortest possible route and spending less time on the road. • Do keep scanning for traffic when crossing. • Do set an example for young people when crossing. • Do wear bright or reflective clothing where possible, especially at night and during inclement weather. • Do look ahead and anticipate the unexpected actions of pedestrians when they are crossing in front of you, particularly at night where alcohol consumption may be a factor.
• Don’t wear dark clothing at night if you are going to be walking on roads. • Don’t assume drivers have seen you and will be able to take evasive action if required. RoadSafe MNE covers the Nillumbik, Whittlesea and Banyule municipalities and is a community road safety council. The group and its programs are funded through VicRoads after determining which areas/groups to focus on. RoadSafe MNE prides itself on the programs it has developed to assist in reducing serious injuries and fatalities on local roads; with a strong focus on the community the group encourage issues to be raised which are then addressed. If you are interested in road safety and would like to become a member of the group, or if you have feedback on a road safety concern in your area, please contact our group. RoadSafeMNE@gmail.com.au RoadSafe Metropolitan North Eastern PO Box 414, Diamond Creek, VIC 3089
Don’t’s • Don’t be distracted by mobile phones, ipods or other devices whilst crossing the roads. Remember to use your ears as well as your eyes. • Don’t cross near the crest of a hill or on a bend. • Don’t step out from between parked vehicles.

COUNCIL REFERENDUM Next Federal Election when you vote, you will be asked if you support Local government being directly funded by the Federal Government. Having seen how Nillumbik Shire Council works, I will be voting “No”. Most people I speak to think councils are a joke. Indeed Melbourne City Council is often referred to as “Clown Hall”. Diamond Creek Primary School Walking School Bus. With the weather getting cooler the numbers of children walking has not decreased. It is fabulous to see the children out there with David Norden, Sue Schnaars and Tamara Congdon. Sue, David and Tamara are volunteers without children at the school. This is certainly a sign of dedication and shows that the
Walking School Bus Program is so popular and successful. We are indebted to Sue and David as ex parents of Diamond Creek Primary School for continuing to volunteer and run this great program. Our gratitude is also extended to Tamara who is at university studying and chose to be involved as a volunteer with our Walking School Bus Program. The children and parents all benefit from the regular exercise and the social side of the Walking School Bus Program. It is terrific to see the children walking to school so happily. Regular exercise is so important to all of us and if the habit is developed early there is a great deal of evidence that it will continue to be a habit that is lifelong. The smiling faces of the Walking School Bus passengers show what a terrific program it really is.

2013 Diamond Creek
Rotary Town Fair It is that time of year again when we are planning this year’s Town Fair. Members of the Rotary Club of Diamond Creek are working hard to make this year’s fair, to be held on Saturday 21st September, even bigger and better than ever! This year we will be honouring extraordinary people in our community – our theme is: Superheroes, Villains and Role Models. Come dressed up on the day as your favourite Superhero, Villain or Role Model. ‘Flash Judges’ will be about the Fair from 10.00 to 11.30am. Judges will be using their Super vision to search for the best dressed, most original and various other categories. Final judging and costume parade will be on the Main Stage at 12.00 Noon. This year’s parade will also reflect our theme. We look forward to seeing various community organisations, schools and groups dressing up, creating exciting floats and having fun with the theme. This year we are encouraging individuals to participate in the parade as well as groups and community organisations, so get your costume together and come along and be part of it!
Role Models. Prior to the fair, we will be seeking nominations for great Role Models from our local community. We are looking for people who are doing outstanding things, whether it is for their family or for the community. It may be an outstanding young person who is a carer for a family member; an exceptional teacher at a local school; someone who has made a remarkable contribution to a community organisation or service; a young person who has made an extraordinary impact to the community or perhaps even a business that has a strong community focus. The list is endless. If you know of someone in the community who is performing outstanding work and you would like to have them recognised for their contributions, please put their name forward. Make sure that you keep 21st September free. If you would like more information about the Town Fair, please have a look at our website: diamondcreektownfair.org.au
A very important part of our theme will be the

The special events we have held so far this year have been twice monthly coffee mornings at Eltham and in Diamond Creek. This has been a new initiative this year by Barb one of our Committee members. We also had an inaugural Film night that was organised by Pam one of our Committee members. We plan to have another film night on the 16th of July. The movie starts at about 6pm and the cost is covered by the 4C’s. This is all made possible through the generous support from our community. We generally meet for coffee and cake afterwards which is at the individuals cost. The 4C’s are indebted to our local community for their support through raising awareness and funds for new members. The town ship of Eltham turned pink and we were asked to help sell raffle tickets outside of the Baker’s delight in Eltham. Our Committee members organised a roster and happily sold the tickets to raise funds
for Breast Cancer Network Australia. • A great day was had by 40 of the 4C’s members on Sunday the 19th of May at the Masonic Lodge. Throughout the day members gathered at the Masonic Hall in Diamond Creek for a Women’s Wellness and Wellbeing Day. Upon arrival the ladies were handed a generous show bag that was made possible by the local businesses in our community. We began the day with an informative presentation from Linda Hammond, our Community Health Nurse, who presented us with information about maintaining exercise and nutrition following a cancer diagnosis. We had awesome morning tea and lunch. In the session after lunch we experienced dance and movement from a variety of presenters. Nancy who runs our Fit Chicks sessions in the YMCA Eltham was great in getting us all moving and raising our heart rate to a healthy level while exercising. Chair Yoga was also great for stretching. After these session members were free to try the following activities: • Light therapeutic massage • Mini manicures • Jewellery Making • Scrap booking • Kinesiology • Painting We thank the Masonic Lodge, Mitre10, Heidi, Sandra Davies, Mason White and McDougall Real Estate, Price Line Pharmacy Diamond Creek, Bendigo Bank Diamond Creek, The Herald Sun, Swisse for Women, Diamond Creek Post Office, Barry Plant Real Estate Diamond Creek, Diamond Creek Tavern, My Chemist Greensborough, Nillumbik Cellars, Diamond Creek Pharmacy and Bushy Park Fruit shop Diamond Creek. Committee members using the funds that were raised by the local community last year. The feedback from members of the 4C’s following a survey send out was fantastic as members really appreciated receiving all the information presented by our presenters and also participating in the great activities. Future events planned are: Mitre 10 Diamond Creek event in September. The Committee meet with the staff and assist the staff in the planning of this event. We thank the Mitre 10 staff because they are the ones who actually do most of the work for this fun night. Stay tuned to the Notice board outside of Mitre 10 for further information about dates and times. Living and Learning Nillumbik are planning the Girls’ Night In to be held in October at the Diamond Creek Community Centre. Contact Liz on 9433 3766 for further information. The 4C’s assist with this event but the majority of the work is done by the staff who volunteers their own time to plan and organise this event. Our gratitude to the great volunteers is extended once again; thank you. We really appreciated your support in raising awareness of women’s cancers. 4C’s can be contacted through Nillumbik Community Health Service on 9430 9154. Linda Hammond is our Community Health Nurse. The Team consisting of Paige Engellener (12yrs), Olivia Ayton (12yrs) and Jasmine Elkin (13yrs) all qualified for Individual Finals which will be held at the State Netball & Hockey centre on the Queens Birthday weekend.
Wow what an exciting term it has been so far at Jets Gymnastics in Diamond Creek. Our senior girls are all in competition season and so far have performed wonderfully. 3 Girls have been selected onto the Victorian Team to compete at National Championships in Sydney in July – Teliah Farren-Price (14), Emily Dean (14) & Brianne Allen (14). For Emily & Brianne this is the 5th consecutive occasion which they have represented Victoria – an amazing achievement and for Teliah this is the 3rd time. The girls will be joined by Sally Young who has been appointed as the Head Coach of the National
Level 8 Team. 3 of our Junior International girls have also been selected to attend a National Training Camp to be held at the Australian Institute of Sport – Chloe Moorcroft (11yrs), Teagan Chakar (11yrs) and Sophie Hubball (11yrs) – this is fabulous recognition of their hard work and outstanding future potential to represent Australia at international level events. They will be joined by our squad head coach Tim Lees who has been invited to present to the coaches from across Australia and our Junior development coach Sarah McCrimmon.
Under the guidance of our new Centre Manager Liz Gardner Jets Diamond Creek has continued to grow in number and now has over 400 students. Most of the students come in for one session a week of 1-2 hours with our youngest “Mini Jets” being 3 & 4 years old. The centre also runs Fun Gym (59yrs), Rockets & Stars (5-10yrs), Gymstar (916yrs) and Trampolining Classes. There are so many great benefits to doing gymnastics including developing a fit, healthy, strong & flexible body, most of all though gymnastics is lots of fun.
