The Story

OF A DIAMOND NECKLACE BY MICHELLE DAVIES

As a celebration of their 30th anniversary in business, their store has created one of the finest pieces of jewelry they have owned, a diamond tennis necklace comprised of 51 unique stones that weigh over 37 carats. This stunning necklace is much more than a piece of jewelry; it is a work of art. iamonds are a timeless addition to any woman’s collection, and an extraordinary piece of jewelry will transform the person wearing it. Cheryl Jarvis accurately portrays the power that diamonds can have in her 2009 novel, The Necklace: Thirteen Women and The Experiment That Transformed Their Lives. Based on a true story, a woman came across a beautiful diamond necklace on display in a jewelry store and recruited twelve other women to purchase it as a group. Every individual of the group had a turn wearing the necklace and this positively transformed their lives in different ways. The necklace became more than a quirky social experiment and came to symbolize the power of beauty, possibility, and friendship.

Edward and Faina Shapiro, owners of Diamond Dream Fine Jewelers in Bernardsville, N.J, want to transform people’s lives through their high-quality handcrafted and designer jewelry. Edward and Faina take pride in knowing that their diamonds always come from ethical and conflict-free sources and benefit the community in which they are mined from. Diamonds have proven year after year to be a sound investment due to their increasing value. Now is a perfect time to invest, “Diamond demand is outpacing supply, prices are on the rise again after the recession, and though a commodity, diamonds remain a wise hedge against inflation" (Bain Capital). BREGUET, A MAJOR PATRON OF THE LOUVRE

his year, in 2014, the exceptional patronage project amounting to several million Euros launched by Nicolas G. Hayek in 2009 reached completion under the watchful eye of his grandson, Marc A. Hayek. Undertaken at the beginning of the 1980s, the last stage of the work at the Grand Louvre consisted in renovating the rooms housing all the 18th century art collections. Closed to the public for nearly ten years, the estimated 2,500 m2 area that has been restored is now entirely revamped. The museography and educational presentations have also been completely revised. This redeployant of the collections allows the works to be integrated with a unique palatial architecture combining visibility and clarity. In this way, justice is done to the splendor of creations brimming with history and symbolizing Europe's rich cultural heritage.

T

Through this patronage, Breguet is not only continuing its support of European culture, but also reinforcing its connection with the Louvre Museum. From 1802 onwards, AbrahamLouis Breguet had the honor of presenting his masterpieces at the Louvre in the context of its second Exhibition of Industrial Products. A few years later, Vivant Denon, the first "patron" of the Louvre and distant predecessor of Jean-Luc Martinez, acquired a minute repeater Breguet watch as well as a bisque clock bought in 1810 and 1811 respectively. Amongst the 18th

14

century art collection at the Louvre is a huge watchmaking spectrum range including very beautiful Breguet creations partly bequeathed in 1961 by the widow of Lyon industrialist, Claudius C么te. But we particularly owe the significant strengthening of ties between the two companies to the 2009 exhibition organized on the initiative of Henri Loyrette then president and director of the Louvre and entitled "Breguet at the Louvre. An Apogee of European Watchmaking".

Breguet treated over 300 VIPs from all over the world to a visit to the Louvre new rooms and master pieces, a refined cocktail in the Hall Napoleon and exclusive gala dinner under the museum's renowned glass pyramid.

In 2003, a new Breguet manufacture capable of achieving its ambitions was opened (starting from 2006, the manufacture will be subject to several extensions to answer an increasing demand). The company invested regularly in the latest control technology and in Research & Development. Nicolas G. Hayek placed great emphasis on research and notably initiated work on new materials with the application of silicon in watchmaking. Under his leadership, Breguet developed and filed a remarkable number of new patents and it continues to do so under its President, Marc A. Hayek. In 2012, the Manufacture achieved the feat of presenting the first watch in history fitted with a magnetic pivot, the Classique ChronomÊtrie. Breguet has also been capable of developing a new movement every year, several of which were truly revolutionary. Its ability to innovate has firmly established Breguet as a benchmark in contemporary Fine Watchmaking, in addition to the unique position it already holds as part of Europe's cultural heritage. Today, the House of Breguet is proud to once again be side-by-side with the Louvre on the occasion of the reopening of the 18th century art rooms, and thus contribute to the international promotion of its fabulous collections. Breguet, European culture and history As a brand that represents a great historical and cultural heritage as well as avantgarde technology, Breguet has always had a fascinating ability to innovate. It owes its place in European cultural history to its prodigiously inventive founder, Abraham-Louis Breguet. Born in Neuchâtel, Switzerland, in 1747, Abraham-Louis Breguet spent much of his life in Paris where many of his important inventions were discovered: the gong spring for repeater watches, the first travelling clock, sold to Bonaparte, or the tourbillon, for which he obtained a patent from the French Minister of the Interior in 1801. Breguet was admired in all the Royal courts of Europe and became the principal watchmaker of the elite in the worlds of diplomacy, science, finance and the military. He created special pieces for his most prestigious clients including King Louis XVI and Queen Marie-Antoinette. He was showered with honors and became a member of the Office of Longitudes and Horology of the Royal French Navy. He also entered the Academy of Sciences and received the Legion of Honor from King Louis XVIII. At his death in 1823, he was eulogized as a man whose genius had revolutionized every aspect of timekeeping. Breguet within the Swatch Group In 1999, late Nicolas G. Hayek Founder and former Chairman and Delegate of the Board of Directors of the Swatch Group took control of Breguet, a jewel of Fine Watchmaking. His genuine passion breathed new life into the brand. He had the vision to restore Breguet to greatness by reviving its cultural and emotional dimensions.

Breguet and sponsorship Breguet has supported arts and culture for many years. The House partners with renowned cultural institutions around the world. Following are a few examples: In 2004, Breguet exhibited an impressive number of old and rare pieces at the Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg to celebrate the brand's links with Russia that cover several centuries. After having been presented at the Louvre in Paris in 2009, this invaluable collection of timepieces was displayed at the Swiss National Museum in 2011.

In 2008, the brand helped to restore a jewel of French neoclassical architecture, the Petit Trianon. This project, which began in 2007, included recreating the original interiors, installing informative displays, repairing the technical fittings and restoring the external workshops together with the East and West entrances and wings of the building. A second phase, completed in 2010, added the finishing touches to this major project.

Breguet helped to restore the Petit Trianon. This project included recreating the original interiors, installing informative displays, repairing the technical fittings and restoring the external workshops.

In 2011, Breguet joined with CNN to produce a oneweek event dedicated to Leonardo da Vinci and his recently rediscovered masterpiece "Salvator Mundi". Working with Breguet, CNN presented the details of this work, the most important artistic discovery of the last 200 years, and explained the stages of its restoration. In 2013, a new association between Breguet and CNN was born. The program "Inside the Louvre", broadcasted during one week on the famous channel, built an intimate portrait of the Louvre and invited viewers at the heart of the world's biggest museum. As a tribute to the famous composers and musicians who have featured in the Breguet story, the brand was a partner of the Geneva International Music Competition in 2013, for the 12th consecutive year. This special partnership supports young virtuosi keen to start an international musical career.

BREGUET: A BENCHMARK IN CONTEMPORARY WATCHMAKING Breguet at the Louvre Timepieces form a particularly exceptional aspect of the Louvre 18th century decorative arts. Breguet, the innovator. The Marine 5827 chronograph

Having become a member of the Board of Longitude in Paris in 1814, Abraham-Louis Breguet was appointed Horologer to the French Royal Navy by Louis XVIII the following year. This prestigious title, embodying exceptional scientific competence, is now perpetuated through the Marine collection and the Marine 5827 chronograph, which features a central chronograph minutes and seconds. Military Wedding 6 LUCKY MILITARY COUPLES, 2 WEDDINGS, LIFETIME MEMORIES AND A COMMUNITY THAT CAME TOGETHER his is a special year in Diamond Dream Fine Jewelers’ history: it marks the ten-year anniversary in the quaint town of Bernardsville, New Jersey. Since 2004, Edward and Faina have shared many special moments and supported the values that are important to their clients, friends, and family. This kindhearted attitude is apparent in all that they do. A responsible and sustainable approach to business allows them to give back to local organizations and individuals in their community. Edward and Faina believe that no matter what size the donation, they can make an impact on someone’s life.

During the State of the Union Address on January 28, 2014, President Obama recognized Army Ranger Sgt. 1st Class Cory Remsburg along with other wounded soldiers. Remsburg was severely injured and left blind in one eye by a roadside bomb during his tenth deployment to Afghanistan. He and his father received a nearly two-minute standing ovation from those in attendance and it became clear that his story of courage and survival had captured hearts across America.

BY BENJAMIN HOPPER 18

A sense of nostalgia overtook Faina as she witnessed Remsburg’s emotional moment unfold on television. Growing up in the former Soviet Union, both Faina and Edward have vivid memories from the various stories of the tragedies, and hardships of war that were told by their family members. Their parents witnessed the horrors of World War II having lost several loved ones. Each of their fathers had served in the military and fought against the Nazis. Shortly after the broadcast, Faina began thinking about how to support, recognize, and thank the courageous men and women of the armed forces. What better way to honor their bravery than by hosting an all inclusive wedding that could be one of the happiest days of their life. She thought that Diamond Dream Fine Jewelers could provide the engagement and wedding rings, and was hoping that other local merchants would rally behind the idea. Faina then presented her idea to various businesses, as well as the Bernardsville Chamber of Commerce, and it was met with great enthusiasm. The town quickly put the contest in motion, and searched for military couples in New Jersey. Local businesses and residents donated goods, services, and financial donations, to this amazing cause. As word of the contest spread around town, more and more donations came in. The grand prize grew much larger than intended, with the estimated value of over $50,000

“It was amazing to see how many local businesses and residents rallied behind the cause by donating various goods and services. As the word of the contest spread around the town, more and more donations began coming in. The grand prize became much larger than intended...” In order to be considered, military couples had to either be active or retired members of the Armed Forces and a New Jersey resident. The couples also had to create a video or brief essay detailing their love story, and why they should be awarded with the grand prize. The contest committee reviewed all of the entries and had a difficult decision narrowing it to a group of five finalists. They gathered on a Saturday afternoon to review the entries, and the process proved to be extremely difficult. Caesar Mistretta, long time owner of J.M. Stringer Gallery, and president of Bernardsville Chamber of Commerce, revealed his sensitive side as he read the heart-wrenching stories. How would the committee choose? Ultimately, they decided on six contestants, who would participate in a town-

wide scavenger hunt to determine the winner. The local merchants who donated the prizes became destinations during the hunt. The team that placed first would receive the all-inclusive American Dream Wedding. The energy was high before the event, as several of the teams canvassed the town to learn about its local history. The highly anticipated scavenger hunt finally took place on the evening of October 2nd. Each couple was given a map and clues that would lead them from one place to another until they reached the final destination, Diamond Dream Fine Jewelers. Local townsfolk, merchants, friends and family proudly cheered on the six couples as they checked their maps and dashed towards each location. Team Stars and Team Stripes were neck-and-neck, and made a photo finish in the center of town. The results were too close to call. The winners would instead be announced at the “Taste of Bernardsville and Beyond” fundraiser a few days later. In front of a packed house at the Olde Mill Inn, the grand prize was awarded to Nicole Russo and Sgt. John Ondish of Team Stars. Although John was stationed in Bahrain during the ceremony, Russo was able to bring him to Bernardsville via Skype. They ecstatically accepted the prize. “I was shaking and all I could think about was wearing my bridal gown and walking down the aisle,” said Russo. Diamond Dream Fine Jewelers Magazine

As part of the grand prize, Sgt. Ondish and Russo received a Bernards Inn catered wedding, engagement ring and wedding bands from Diamond Dream Fine Jewelers, a wedding gown from Elizabeth Johns, a rehearsal dinner at The Olde Mill Inn, a DJ from Eclipse Events, photography by Stephen Taylor and videography by Generic Brand Human. Also included was a commissioned charcoal painting from J. M. Stringer Gallery of Fine Art, flowers by Laura Clare, makeup by Carla Fabrizi, hair styling by Salon Studio, a wedding cake by Cocoluxe, invitations by Bernardsville Print Center, chauffeur services by Lux, handbags by Le Fashion Cottage, alterations by Monetti Tailors, and bridal party costume jewelry by Bling. Due to the generosity of sponsors and the overabundance of donations, not only would all of the finalists be receiving prizes, but there would be a second wedding as well! Raymond Royce and Katie Stelnick of Team Stripes received the second place prize and were pleasantly surprised. "I'm overwhelmed, and out of breath” said Royce. We're awed by the generosity of this community and we're eternally grateful." The remaining four finalists each received a variety of prizes including a $500 check from the Chamber. The rest of the evening was spent celebrating and toasting to our brave military men and women. Every couple walked away a winner in the eyes of Bernardsville. Faina & Edward Shapiro congratulate the contestants at the reception

Not only did this contest place a spotlight on the courageous service of our military members, but it also demonstrated how one small town can collaborate to make a difference in the lives of others. Edward and Faina along with the community look forward to the planning of both weddings that will happen in the upcoming year. Diamond Dream is excited to work with the winning couple to design the ring of their dreams as they begin a new stage in their life. Despite there being only one grand prize winner, all of the participants could not be more grateful for this opportunity. It was rewarding to see how appreciative they were, even after knowing all they do for us. Since then, many have formed friendships with one another, as they share the wedding planning experience together. This wouldn't have been possible without the support of local businesses and residents of Bernardsville. Not only did the contest spotlight the courageous service of our military members, but it also demonstrated how one small town can come together to make a difference in the lives of others. Edward and Faina hope that by spreading this story, a chain reaction will begin and other towns will be inspired to carry out similar deeds. The winner was announced at “Taste of Bernardsville at the Old Mill Inn.

FACTORY

TOUR

his past year we had a chance to visit Marco Bicego’s factory located in the province of Vicenza, Italy, otherwise known as the “gold capital of the world.” Known for his thematic collections of exquisite handcrafted jewelry using white and yellow gold, gemstones, and diamonds, Marco Bicego’s designs are the epitome of Italian sophistication. We were excited to go behind the scenes and see how one of our favorite jewelry collections goes from the drawing board to the showcases inside our store. To Marco, jewelry has always been a family affair—and he likes to keep it that way. Marco is a second generation jeweler and many of his current employees had worked for his father. The factory is located in Trissina, a quaint town with a population of less than 10,000 where everyone knows each other. Ever since opening its doors in 2008, the sleek, contemporary building has become a feature of this tiny town. As with the other Italian jewelry factories we’ve visited in the past, you would never be able to guess that this is a manufacturing facility.

FACTORY

TOUR

“Creating beautiful jewelry all day can surely work up one’s appetite! Fortunately for the Bicego employees, the family-friendly atmosphere continues with their fully-staffed kitchen, which provides food around the clock.” What struck us the most while walking through the halls was how ostensible everything was! When Marco’s craftsmen finish their work for the day, they leave the piece they are working on right where they left it. These 80 artisans produce all of the company’s jewelry by hand. Also, each precious stone used in the designs is meticulously chosen by expert gemologists to ensure that every piece produced is of the finest quality. One of the striking features of the factory is its uniquely designed floor, and its sinks. Each artisan has their work station positioned above the grated floor, designed this way in order to collect any stray pieces of gold and other precious stones that may have fallen during the jewelry making process. The floor is lifted twice a year in order to collect stray pieces so they can be used again. The sinks are similarly designed to collect any gold dust or particles that are washed off jewelers’ hands. Creating beautiful jewelry all day can surely work up one’s appetite! Fortunately for the Bicego employees, the family-friendly atmosphere continues with their fully-staffed kitchen that provides food around the clock. It is not uncommon to find Marco in the kitchen cooking up delicious Italian dishes for his staff. During our visit, we were fortunate enough to taste some delicious soppressata Marco had made, further proving that his passion for food matches that for his jewelry! Salute Dolce Vita, Il pranzo era ottimo!–have a sweet life and great meals!

SAILING WITH EMIRATES TEAM NEW ZEALAND AND OMEGA

he Seamaster Diver ETNZ Limited Edition boldly celebrates ETNZ’s contribution to the most thrilling competition in the history of the America's Cup. OMEGA has long supported the able yachtsmen of Emirates Team New Zealand and recently added Skipper – Dean Barker as a Brand Ambassador.

T

The link between sailing and timekeeping dates back to the days when sailors relied on high-precision marine chronometers for navigation. Though sailors rely on new technologies like satellite systems to navigate today, the OMEGA Seamaster remains the wristwatch of choice for many of the world’s great sailors – including Barker and Dalton.

OMEGA’s long-term partnership with the Team dates back to 1995, the last year the America’s Cup was contested in the United States, when syndicate head Sir Peter Blake joined OMEGA as a Brand Ambassador and led the team to victory in San Diego. Barker, an America’s Cup champion in 2000 and a former Olympian, has been part of the OMEGA family since 2001. Today, OMEGA continues to be an enthusiastic and visible presence at the America’s Cup as it proudly supports Emirates Team New Zealand as one of its top sponsors, with the OMEGA logo prominently featured on the jib, both hulls and the wingsail of ETNZ’s AC72. OMEGA has an undeniable connection to the sea, from being the only company in history to produce a wristwatch that received marine chronometer certification, to our history with Sir Peter Blake, solo yachtswoman Ellen MacArthur, and ecologist and filmmaker Yann Arthus-Bertrand.

THE OMEGA SEAMASTER DIVER ETNZ Limited Edition has a robust 44 mm polished and brushed stainless steel case with a matt black ceramic bezel ring. It is presented on a black rubber strap and is delivered with a stainless steel extendable divers’ bracelet. $6,600

THE OMEGA SEAMASTER DIVER ETNZ LIMITED EDITION

“I’m honored to wear the new Seamaster Diver ETNZ Limited Edition timepiece and am proud to represent OMEGA and appreciate their commitment to Emirates Team New Zealand – and to the sport of sailing throughout history.” “I admire OMEGA’s passion for the sea,” added Team Managing Director Grant Dalton, who joined Team New Zealand in 2003 after a storied, two-decade racing career. “They are a terrific – and important – partner for Team New Zealand and we appreciate their support.” The new OMEGA Seamaster Diver ETNZ Limited Edition boldly celebrates ETNZ’s campaign to claim sailing’s greatest trophy. The screw-in caseback is embossed with the ETNZ logo; the limited edition number and “Challenger for the 34th America’s Cup” are engraved around the outside of the case back. The new timepiece is powered by the Co-Axial calibre 3330, and, befitting a watch inspired by and created for seafarers, the exclusive chronograph is equipped with professional dive features including a unidirectional rotating bezel and a helium escape valve, date corrector, Super-LumiNova coating, and is water resistant to 30 bar (300 metres / 1000 feet). Breguet, the innovator.

Type XXII 10Hz, high-frequency chronograph A contemporary interpretation of the legendary Type XX supplied in 1960 to the French Naval Air Force, the Type XXII is the first series-produced mechanical chronograph to feature a regulating mechanism that oscillates at a frequency of 10 Hz, enabling measurements to 1/20 th of a second. This major technical innovation is made possible by the physical properties of silicon and the lighter weight of the escapement components, considerably enhancing the watch’s regulating performance. History is still being written...
