POÏESIS

etymologically derived from the ancient Greek term ποιέω, which means «to make». This word, the root of our modern «poetry», was first a verb, an action that transforms and continues the world. Neither technical production nor creation in the romantic sense, poïetic work reconciles thought with matter and time, and man with the world. Heidegger refers to it as a ‘bringing-forth’, a threshold occasion: a moment of ecstasis when something moves away from its standing as one thing to become another.

After having won an international competition for the European Headquarters of Japanese Tobacco International, in partnership with SOM London, we were commissioned to develop not only the architectural project but also to carry a research about new working environments. These research is intended to radically transform the company’s working approach and redefine it’s hierarchical structure.


GENERIC + SPECIFIC The main concept levitates around the dialectic between generic and specific. The torsioned tube in its sculptural singularity is capable of providing potential neutrality: A peripheral structure, with a continuous open span of 17m and some punctual vertical connections allows infinite ways of space appropriation. The Specific will be therefore defined by the way The Neutral is set up in order to fulfill the needs of a certain working style/ structure. In this THE GENERIC case, a cross functional team system with high degree of interaction was required. A city inspired system, was then suitable in order to provide maximal functional complexity and knowledge transfer.

BOULEVARD A CONTINUOUS LANDSCAPE The Boulevard is unique element going all across the building and defining a strong spatial identity. The Boulevard not only links functionally the different plateaus but also provides a phenomenological experience of the entire building. It’s double loop accompanies the Torsion tube spatial condition and unveils different landscape sights when alternating internal / external situation as well as facade/inner space situations. Programmatically fluctuating, it can become a sculpted stair, an auditorium foyer, an exhibition space, a coffee point, or even a sloped terrace. Its signaletic and main landmark character is accentuated by the use of a unique material.

CIRCULATION SYSTEMS As in a city, where streets constitute the very first degree of publicness, circulation spaces required qualification and complexity: connections were therefore multiplied, informal activities integrated, spaces enlarged in order to be programatically flexible and spatially qualified. TYPOLOGIES 0910_o 0910_ An adaptation of working environments to the socioeconomic era of JTI HEADQUARTERS JTI H post-fordism is necessary. One normal working day is subject to Radjavi, a Rue Kazem 1202 Gen Rue K large range of activities, often assisted by new technologies, such as mobile and wireless devices. Mobility and ubiquitous connectivity contribute to the dematerialisation of working spaces as such. The time a person spends at this “home” work station has been considerably decreased, therefore an important reduction of the surface assigned to fix working stations, can be transformed into more temporary and diverse working typologies, as huddle rooms, break outs, lounges, relaxing spaces, sleeping room, coffee points, hoteling, etc Opposing monofunctional streamline or cellular work systems, a multitude of activities takes place within the same space. Multiplicity, becomes serendipity, when making functional complexity and instability an opportunity for unattended encounters, likely to increase knowledge transfer. Our purpose is then to develop an architectural/urban repertoire of spaces going from extreme intimacy to extreme publicness.

THE ELEMENTS

PROGRAM IMBRICATION The Boulevard as alternative circulation, increases vertical connection and programmatic imbrication possibilities. A stacked up system can be therefore transformed into a Network system. Different departments were packed in a three-dimensional logic where connections can be lateral, horizontal and vertical (through the Boulevard). A network system is also more flexible and easily adaptable to future program changes.

MATERIALITY A material vocabulary was defined in order to identify each space up to it’s function, also their proper visual identity could help orientation within the building. Domestic spaces are calm, clear and neutral. These spaces house mostly individual and concentrated activities, declined into different scales (manager, director, vice president) of a housing unit. The main question is how could one define one’s “home”? Which is the degree of neutrality needed in order to allow appropriation? Each one of the collective activities (informal or plannified) express more textured and coloured materiality in contrast with domestic spaces neutrality. These features aid acoustic performance and reinforce a required visibility (as in a city).

STRUCTURAL AND EXTERIOR WALL CONCEPT The last layer consist in a neutral envelope, containing all the elements in the «city». The structural system corresponds directly with the building form and achieves a column free office space, thus providing JTI with maximum internal flexibility and future adaptability. The building is designed as a Torsion Tube, with all of the vertical side elements laterally restrained by the horizontal floor framing members. Rigid top and bottom cross bracing tie to the vertical members in order to complete the formation of the multi-storey tubular box frames.

QUILTED SKIN - Performative Facade

Lateral forces will be resisted by the composite floors, all of which will be tied to the vertical and horizontal members of the tube. Forces will thus be transferred back to the main braced core elements that are located where the structure meets the ground at the northeastern and southern corners of the site Diagonal roof and low level framing members complete the tube arrangement, so as to resist the cantilever forces, and give the structure the necessary torsional rigidity Indicative structural “Dia-Grid” facade framing will support the floor members and act as the overall structural support frame. The connection of the floor beams to the vertical and diagonal members will serve to increase the stiffness of the Torsion Tube

Each module is composed by three isolating layers, an internal smooth single glazing and an external double glazed folded skin . How to inhabit an industrial space taking the most of 800sqm surface and 9 meters height? Confronted to an empty industrial factory built for the Hispano Suiza automobile factory, Cargo introduces the notion of Marcel Duchamp’s “ready made”; borrowing meaning from existing conditions and situations and transferring it to this monumental lieu in its humble neutrality.

A part of the space incorporates 16 old, rusted and obsolete steel containers, having travelled thousands of kilometres on cargos all around the world. Stacked as Legos, each container finds a precise function, becoming a cafeteria, meeting rooms or relaxing spaces. These spaces of collective life exist in strong contrast within the other half of the office, a working zone designed as an open space in order to foster group synergy in an atmosphere enveloped by natural light.

Team work and informality are fostered by providing a mixture of desk regular spaces and a diversity of spatial situations where people can interact in different ways. These spaces provide different levels of concentration - from carrels to small containers for concentrated work depending on the time to be spent and the number of people using this - open and closed meeting spaces and rooms, a messy and almost hidden competition unit. 0

Filing furniture separating the project units act as an interaction devise. The cut-out skyline allows visual interaction beyond the project units, providing a wider perception of the space. In the same logic, a sinuous circulation through the project units creates different walking habits depending on one’s location. A long filing bench has been located against the west wall in order to have the possibility to sit and have a working informal chat.

Can we rebuild an architectural problem from a scientific point of view by retooling architecture? Which could be an alternative definition of the fundamental questions of design? This project is mainly an exercise about structuring projectual thinking. Here, projectual constraints and existing circumstances are defined, classified and structured. Their interaction allows a large number of suitable answers. The project concerns Geneva’s international congress centre Palexpo, extension and renewal. The main conceptual concern is the definition of a strong spatial unity inside extremely large free spaces, where visual and spatial experiences are exacerbated by distances and scale. Each one of these halls is qualified with a specific spatial concept, translated into material specificity and a lighting strategy.

PÉRIMÈTRE The exercise applies to a large 4000sqm exhibition space, and relatively low height ceiling (3,5m). A suspended ceiling hangs all over it’s surface, housing all the complex technical infrastructure. Minimalism is at stake since horizontal planes, floor and ceiling, appear as surfaces actually qualifying space. The ceiling deals with different constraints: a regular structural columns grid, a system of sliding rails for mobile panels, some fixed enclosure elements for serving spaces and a reserved peripheral border. A fixed density of 0.5m neon/sqm was required to fulfil the specific lighting demands. Grasshopper served as tool for algorithm construction. I articulated all internal and external constraints into a first «base» algorithm, that would give as an output a range of points in space, fulfilling all the required conditions. Within this new information, I developed a range of algorithms applying different spatial structures: Magnetic fields, Progressive rotation, Strata and an overall pattern.

After obtaining some satisfying systems I introduced perturbation elements, such as punctual, linear and magnetic attractors, as well as randomness. After multiple tests, a Magnetic fields diagrams around multiple poles was developed, because of its spatial quality through continuous differentiation and construction simplicity. Some construction constraints were also developed further (as rotation degrees and fixing points on the grid) allowing the making of prefabricated elements and reducing construction costs.

BOUWVELD25 introduces the question of functional complexity within a basic ÂŤurban blockÂť as a whole functional unit inside the city. This functional unit should be capable of managing by its own set up, private/ public relationships and should be flexible enough as to adapt to different external contexts.

ZOMER The concept of «urban block» is applied here to a mixed urban unit comprising collective housing, sport facilities, school, crèche, library and exterior spaces, inserted in the OudeDocken Area in Gent. The starting point for the research was set by some “game rules” defined in OMA’s Masterplan. These rules concerned mainly dimensions and views. A stripe system within this site would generate open perspectives to the historical inner city and the waterfront as central public element, Position towards the waterfront was therefore essential to the entire area. The banding varies between open space, built space and canals. By developing some bands as a park, the perspectives remain open and provide a more enjoyable climate for the people who don’t live at the waterfront. Bouweld25 block faces the waterfront and defines at the same time one of the perspectives materialized by a park. The masterplan stipulate as well the clear definition of each block perimeter, in order to reinforce character for the mass units and clarity for the open perspectives.

The school had special demands in terms of flexibility between spaces, exterior spaces identity and access. All of the circulations were treated as collective flexible spaces being able to house any future activities and to connect/extend with external spaces. The exterior spaces are continuos and visually connected. Their identity is defined by level diffences,volumetric tensions, and materials treatment. Spaces are distributed up to their requirements in terms of intensity (activity and noise), views and flexibility (public /semipublic).

In the time when buildings compete for becoming an icon by exhausting every possibility of expressive forms and extreme heights, pure geometry like a cube can stand out within the field of exceptional banalities.

Queen of Qatar’s private pavilion, hanging on top of Qatar Foundation Headquarters, brought us therefore into the question of how to define the exceptional inside the exceptional. Coming back to banality seemed a suitable option. The pavilion stands unstable over the large interior hall of the headquarters building and benefits at the same time of an external terrace overlooking the desert and the university campus. The Sheika required a personal office inside the headquarters, comprising a waiting zone, a meeting room, a projection room, and a private space. Her pavilion should be directly connected by a private elevator to the VIP lobby hall, located on the basement of the building, where visitors are dropped off by car.

The pavilion’s eliptical shape appears as a bizarre element inside a cubic and orthogonal logic. The glazed ovoid perimeter houses a completely open Miesian space where four different spaces are managed by an opaque service core. The core is inahbited by functions, containing all vertical circulations, water rooms and a connections private passage for the queen. Each one of the four spaces will have a very specific character defined by the use of a different and specific material: Aluminum, wood, silk and leather. The relationship between material and space is defined by their degree of formality or privacy.

Relationship to the exterior, through the terrace, deals with different degrees of privacy and is managed by a serigraphied text treatment over the glazing, within the Qatar Foundation principles. More privacy or openness is allowed depending on the surrounding space. Carpets design research was focused on the redefinition of traditional arabic patterns and mainly inspired on vegetal themes.

NAI PLOT articulates Urban and Architectural scales. How to deal with bigness and architectural lobotomy when a building becomes a city in itself? Some void and volume strategies were developed in order to dig into these questions. Functionally, this architecture and art stage is meant to constitute a connecting network, offering facilities shared by all cultural institutions surrounding the Museum Park. At the same time it will exacerbate assets of the surrounding changing urban context.

program network and green axis The project is articulated to the city ambitions for this area of Rotterdam. The Concept Binnenstads Plan 2008-2020 stipulates a new circulation system for the inner Rotterdam, composed by a main circulation Ring “stadsboulevards”, coupled to a network of peripheral car parks. This system will ease traffic circulation inside the city and promote pedestrian and bike flows. NAI PLOT, being directly articulated to the ring and one of the new car parks, takes advantage of great accessibility and connectivity, having therefore a major role to play as an urban pivot and as an Icon. In addition, NAI PLOT will stand out as a pivot within the main green axis of the city, torn apart by the important traffic on the east-west axis and the existing condition of the Museum Park. NAI deposit-building represents an urban problem, a barrier in the territory.

The conceptual approach is set up by the definition of a theorical model: a maximal extruding area structured by an overall urban grid with functionally adapted dimensions. This system, overlapped and intersected to the existing condition of built masses and flows, stands between two scaless and refers both to a building and to an urban fabric. Heights will be defined as a response to local existing conditions, especially regarding the NAI building, which is meant to be shown as a nAi AREA“sculpture” over the Museum Park, testimonial of NAI history.

A new public level is developed at the same height within the open space under this deposit, provided with access over the full length of the “banana”, and then a depressed area becomes a fantastic entrance space. Several abstract tests were developed filling the “clusters” in with potential layouts asked in the program and in relation to the plinth. The grid is an element of freedom where all combinations become possible.

Analysis of a 49 floors tower envelope, in terms of geometry,determination and detailing of all the different façade typologies. 28 different typologies were identified and classified into 4 larger families: A. B. C. D.

Balconies and sliding frames, Curtain Walls, Plinth façades (mainly DUCTAL cladding) and Glazed roofs.


A. BALCONIES


Research made on balconies led us a system allowing a complete continuity of the floor inside-outside, including the sliding windows frames, as well as a hidden rainwater evacuation, avoiding the rain water to fall along the first plane of the facade. The fixings for the balconies (glass or DUCTAL) are assured by a extruded steel profile, specially designed for the project, making part of prefabricated auto stable steel frame (3m wide), attached the slabs side.

Some particular points on the concrete slabs were detailed as well in order to point out the potential geometrical conflicts and thermal bridges, since the construction enterprises were reticent to the use of thermal bridge breakers or any kind of reservation to be made on the slabs.

The particular geometry of the tower needed a previous analysis for its comprehension. From an oval basis, the volume develops until becoming a rectangle. The building’s geometry generates different façade grids from one level to another. Triangulation allowed managing those different horizontal weaves lengths, but remained a problem because of the heights difference, and the increasing of the total façade surface. The water-and-air-tightness is provided by a light-weight façade, made of vertical and storey-high panels, with regular dimensions. Its modularity allows the façade to be functional with both offices and dwellings configurations, with possibility of switching easily from one configuration to another.

External skin is made of several repetitive modules (balconies) forming a ‘moucharabieh’ that gives materiality to the tower’s skin. It is made by gathering small and basic components following a geometric pattern connected to the structural columns of the building. The skin acts as a very efficient solar protection, placed in front of the windows, with a ventilated air gap. We studied different configurations in order to generate a system capable of adapting to multiples angles openings declined on the whole tower. It was necessary to propose constructive methods with simple assemblies that could adapt to the local know-how as well as to integrate local materials

Each faรงade is composed by a double line of vertical circular columns. Each mullion is considered structurally and architecturally independent, with only some wind support fixing to the structure. All the necessary functions are gathered in a 200mm diameter profile: Steel structure, profiles for holding the glass, aluminium cover with thermal insulating infill, and a biarticulated wind resisting connection with the structure. The mullions can be hung or self-standing, because of the low weight of the glass. Mullions pass continuously in front of the structure, which stays in a slightly recessed position, in order to homogenize the structural scheme.

Metropolisation is the urbanization process which aims at reinforcing the urban hierarchies. The metropolitan cities and zones became the main prosperity sources, around which is organized the global economy system. The search for a better standard of living and the mobility increasing took part in urban sprawling and land fragmentation. These territories are strewn with expressways, by-passes, motorways, exchangers. Today, urbanization and mobility inextricably interact; this is why the city must be thought about differently and must reorientate its planning towards a consistency of the life, work and habitat basins. Cities must be directed towards highly inter-connected density poles, forming networks. Development and organization of the peripheries, is one of the major stakes of our time within mobility. ‘Lille XL’ makes part of a density poles structure, and acts as an interface between European and local flows. Amongst these different poles, Seclin exchanger is the only opportunity for Lille Metapole, to connect to the North-European TGV line. The overlapping of several mobility forms (TGV, airport, Motorway and Tram-train) is an oportunity to develop a new urban piece. The site offers as well a landscape potential, the Flanders void contrasting with the density poles nearby. ‘Lille XL’ is linked to the new metapolitan ring and second Lille’s TGV station. This urban acupuncture is conceived like an international, identifiable window at the European scale.

At the time of the Channel tunnel opening, in 1991, a great festival was held in the old Calais slaughter-houses. In the inertia of this cultural atmosphere was born ‘Le Chanel’. Bouchain’s rehabilitation project was made in association with artists and architecture students, working around one idea: “thinking more for spending less”. Four pavilions, in explicit reference to World Fairs or to suburban houses which border the site, replace the narrow existing bar, which was too exiguous and not exploitable, while preserving the surrounding wall. Each one of them represents a way of thinking, building and translating architecture.

All pavilions have identical structures and forms. They distinguish from each other by their skins and functions. The 3rd pavilion is intended for logistics and storage. It must be able to be used temporarily as representation place, which means very important requirements for evolution and flexibility. Our pavilion is meant to be, the most economic, the most ecologic and the lightest.


The form, resulting from the hypertrophy of a vernacular frame, makes reference to Calaisian architectural eclecticism, and becomes a pretext for subversion. We decide to use only one skin for all the volume’s faces. The roof doesn’t overflow any more, but it turns over on the façades, by forming a monolith.


This project is a laboratory of diverted or prolonged cycles. Its external skin consists of rough materials as rippled metal sheets, while in the inside the insulating material becomes apparent. Insulation was selected for its easy implementation and aesthetic qualities, since it would be visible and compose the internal façades. Our research led us to natural or recycled materials as duck feathers, clothing baize or box board. An insulation resulting from rubbish revalorization interested us. Visiting the Halluin Factory of rubbish sort allowed us to discover the manufacture system of paperboard bales. We wanted to produce a thin bale, proposing an insulator panel easier to implement. At the end, we had to abort this option, by practical and economical reasons, and opted for the Batiplum, a high performance insulator, composed by duck feathers.

The external sheets were laid out in a “random” way under a combination of opaque metal sheets and translucent and transparent polycarbonate sheets, drawing the skin rhythm of the monolith. This combination comes from an accumulation of bands composed by three opaque modules, two translucent and a transparent one.

The pavilion has a large storage surface fixed along the circulation of the lifting truck. Two safety anti-shock devices are installed. The first one protects the insulator, fixed as OSB plaques. The second device protects the central structure and functions as a desk.


Details design ensures the skin continuity. Insulation, wind-bracing, openings and insulation protection are comprised into its thickness.

Post-wall Berlin has emerged as a major player in contemporary cultural production. As a laboratory of lifestyles and modes of production, it attracts an influential community of highly creative people from around the globe. As a result, new organisational forms of dwelling, combined with alternative implementation methods, are currently challenging the roles of both architect and local authority in the process of delivering dwellings for the city. On the building at Oderberger Strasse, diverse habitable heights, module and repetition appear as elements of freedom and potential customisation. After a closer look and understanding, a diversity of diagrams of circulation, imbrications, grid, flexibility, private/public relationships, allowed to reveal all the complexity of the building. The diagram set serves as a core, as a genetic code that includes the different properties of the building, properties that could be modified, redefined or enhanced. For instance, new connections, new external spaces, etc could be proposed on the diagram set, generating an enhanced spatial output as a result.

Programmatic imbrication around a central collective space

After translating the 2D enhanced diagrams into 3D diagrams, the new connections would redefine the form through  packing . The use of an equidistant grid script repositions the volumes and the obtained spatial structure encompasses desired qualities of multiplied programmatic connections and enhanced circulation and outdoor spaces, as described by the 2D diagrams. Circulation is defined as a central 3D space combined to collective spaces. In the translation from a diagram to a spatial structure, it would be therefore carved out from the packed system and understood as an internal void. A further exploration is to be developed, concerning the nature of these repetitive modules, in terms of imbrications efficiency, flexibility and housing units’ internal space.

The arts of street and the other creative, festive or playful forms of performance have been tradition for years in the town of Vieux-Condé. The future library will be in a very close, physical and functional relation within Le Boulon, cultural equipment dedicated to street performance arts. This situation will make of the library makes it programmatically peculiar as equipment, since the image of performing arts is in the heart of its general program and is associated to reading. At an urban scale, the library will be associated to a veritable large scale performance space, charged with a lot of historical meaning, since it used to be the former railway for the coal mining train convoys.

The image of the industrial hall is thus proposed as architectural device. It plays with more or less multiple references present in situ: reference to the former industrial site, to the platform of the former station and to the mining railway, to Le Boulon and the universe of street arts, and finally to Gustave Eiffel. The industrial hall is thus the element around which is composed the whole media library. It is conceived as a unique structure, as an answer to problems and multiple stakes such as the flexibility or further developments. The hall consists of a raw steel structure with a variable geometry. The structure composes a real scenic space, that becomes support for sets of changing and coloured weavings connected to the more established ÂŤprogrammatic masses ÂŤas the street arts space and the hour of the tale. These coloured and joyful sets hang to the structure and compose a landscape of triangular plans as ceiling. The making of these coloured weavings offers a space of freedom and participation for the community.

Lille and Strasbourg Schools of Architecture decided to organize an exhibition within the inertia of Lille2004 European Capital. It was focused on the architectural exchanges carried between Europe and Mexico during the 1920’s and the 1950’s. After having proposed a sketch, we were invited to design and build the exhibition museography, graphic design, and furniture.



The project is organized around alcoves related to specific topics and colours, Barragan and O’Gorman’s spaces. The chromatic choice is related to dominating colours in Mexican pre-Columbian art, which was an inspiration source for the Mexican modernist architects. A bended sequence in polycarbonate modules, suggests the exhibition entry. Exhibition panels are not only billposting surfaces, but also were declined as furniture, being able to welcome multimedia spaces.



Facing the budget restrictions, we opted for recycling and using cheap storage materials, as palettes wood. Exhibition modules are made with plywood boards which the school already had. They are composed by easily removable units, which confers them flexibility for further uses.

I look forward to question ordinary urban spaces, to turn visible what is diluted in the everyday life exposure. I explore this urban reality and its invisible counterpart. The most ordinary spaces find a new subjectivity, and prod our imaginations to ponder the relationship we have within the city. Seeing things differently enables us to envisage a future and new meanings for these spaces.




I love cities. Eclectic and mutating ones, archipelago cities. Here, continuity doesn’t make visible the city’s substance, but each part stands as a concrete unit.
