THESIS PROJECT |HONORARY MENTION

Location: Samalayuca, Chihuahua, Mexico

Date of completion: November 2022

Semester: 9th - 11th

Academic Project

Individual Work

This project aims to increase the existing vitality of the selected area by proposing a public market, restaurant and pedestrian street These elements are designed as factors that can help enhance the unique characteristics of the region, like local commerce, tourism, and a strong sense of community Moreover, the project focuses on addressing the high percentage of population that works within the primary and tertiary sector, as well as a proposing a solution to the invasion of public spaces by market stalls that positioned themselves on the sidewalks of the main square and of the selected site, limiting circulation

Similarly, the incorporation of the pedestrian street between the site and main square has the objective of creating a seamless connection that favors the high flow of pedestrian activity and improves accessibility.

CONNECTION MOVEMENT INTEGRATION

Due to its proximity to several Samalayuca landmarks, and specially thanks to its close connection to the Main Square, the site in front of the latter is selected to strengthen the union between these spaces and incentivize a greater movement This generates a complex that feels integrated with its context and that harmonizes with the existing environment

Team Work

Following the concepts of density, place and community, a mixed-use project was developed considering high density vertical housing along with a commercial and service area It was necessary to carry out several reflection exercises on how to integrate a complex of this typology within a consolidated urban context, and that in turn function as a community creator

Finally, a proposal was designed around two buildings that embrace a common outdoor area, which is complemented by an outdoor recreation space. Upon entering the complex, the user is greeted by a commercial area on the ground level, and offices on the first level The remaining 4 floors are destined to residential use with two types of housing, one 70m2 unit and a 100m2 unit

As a way of transforming an urban context to strengthen the vitality and accessibility, this project envisions an intervention on a busy street in order to generate a general corridor for pedestrians, cyclists and cars, as well as a community center to provide a much needed recreation space for the community

An extensive analysis was develop to determine which where the main problematics of the area and what were the possible solutions We focused on the places with more vitality, the spaces with difficult access to mobility, and the areas that produced a sense of insecurity due to the lack of urban infrastructure. The project is proposed on Libertad Street, which is characterized by its local commerce. The design creates safe and shaded circulations for all users , in addition to outdoor spaces to increase the liveliness of the zone.

With the objective of re-architecture in mind, this project focuses on the intervention of the Gardie, an iconic building of the city from the 80's that worked as a restaurant-bar but is currently abandoned. The proposal aims to bring the emblematic building back to life through the renewal of the concept and reintegration into the urban context

The design is based on the juxtaposition of a collaborative space for innovation and entrepreneurship that works as a meeting point for businessmen, independent workers and students. Creating the union of three spaces: the café, chill area, offices and co-working space
