UPDATE
‘WE’LL NEVER HAVE IT SO GOOD IN RETIREMENT’ – say people counting down to giving up work
They found that half of those who are in the final 10 years of work before their planned retirement date admit to being jealous of the finances of those who have already stopped work. Meanwhile 54 per cent believe they will be worse off when their time comes to give up work. To mark the 10th year of its annual Class of… research into the financial plans and aspirations of people planning to retire in the year ahead, Prudential has also this year interviewed a cross section of people who are due to retire in the next 10 years – those who will make up the Classes of 2018 to 2027. Save as much as you can for as long as you can Nearly two-thirds (63%) say the best advice they could give to those who have just started work for the first time is to save as much as they can for as long as they can, and one in three (34%) now regret that they didn’t start saving into a pension earlier in their own working life. Meanwhile, 33% simply wish they had saved more for their retirement.
REASONS TO BE CHEERFUL But it’s not all gloom for those on the countdown to retirement – two in five (40%) believe they will be as financially comfortable as those who are already retired while 6% believe they will actually be better off.
PENSIONERS HAVE A NEW LEASE OF LIFE IN RETIREMENT Retirement has meant a new lease of life for millions of people who have given up work in the last 10 years, with more than one in four (26%) saying they are fitter and healthier since they stopped working, according to new research from Prudential. The provider of saving and retirement solutions found that far from winding down, nearly half of those who have retired since the height of the financial crisis (48 %) say they are busier and more active than they anticipated. Through embracing the benefits of retirement and making the most of the new-found time, more than one in three (35 per cent) say they have more time to make their life more adventurous than they could have hoped while they were still at work. When asked how else their experience of retirement was exceeding their expectations, many of those who have become pensioners in the last 10 years pointed to improvements in their relationships. More than a quarter (26%) believe they now get on better with their partner while 25% think that their relationship with their family is happier since stopping work. Meanwhile, just under one in four (23%) say their social life has improved more than they expected.
Experiences of volunteering in later life
People aged over 50 give up a lot of time to help others. This ranges from formal volunteering, like working in a local charity shop or running a community event; to acts of kindness, like helping out a neighbour with shopping or putting out their bins. In fact, 62% of people aged 50–64 and 70% of people aged 65–74 participated in some sort of volunteering in last year. Although many people are already giving back – which is not only good for our communities but for our own individual wellbeing – a significant number of people are missing out on the benefits of improved social connections and sense of purpose as a result of volunteering. The Centre for Ageing Better wants to hear from people over 50, to find out more about people’s experiences of volunteering and contributing to their communities. They want to understand more about what encourages you to volunteer, as well as what stops you doing it. The survey is part of a wider review being conducted in partnership with the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport, and with the support of the Big Lottery Fund, to encourage more people in later life to contribute to their communities and get involved in volunteering.
Please share your stories, experience and insights into volunteering and contributing to your community: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/ageingbettervolunteering RETIREMENT

Update
Pension savers in their final years of work are concerned that they won’t be able to match the living standards of those who have already retired and admit to being jealous of their pensions and their lifestyles, according to new research from Prudential.

‘Flexible’ Vegetarian Recipes
A
‘flexible’ vegetarian is someone who wants to cut down on the meat and fish they eat, choosing to have it only on occasions, or maybe only if it’s organic. It could also be someone who wants to stop eating meat completely, but still easily needs to cater for meat-eating friends and family. The Flexible Vegetarian offers tasty, versatile recipes that can be served as completely vegetarian or made with a simple meat, chicken or fish twist. a large knife. Heat a large saucepan and then add the crushed cardamom seeds, cumin seeds and chilli flakes. Dry fry for a minute or so until they release their aroma. Add the oil to the pan, stir in the carrots, celery and ginger. Stir around for a couple of minutes, then add the lentils, coconut milk and stock. Bring to a simmer and cook for about 20 minutes, covered with a lid, until the lentils are tender. Blitz the soup until smooth and creamy. Season to taste with salt and pepper. Spoon into bowls and scatter with a few coriander leaves, a twist of pepper and a pile of toasted coconut flakes. Flexible Pan fry a few prawns and sit them on top of the soup when serving – this makes it more of a hearty meal, and their delicate sweetness works really well with the aromatic flavours.
Halloumi fries with fattoush If you’ve never tried halloumi fries before, then you have to give these a go. Something incredible happens to the cheese when coated in flour and deepfried: they become very moreish. I know that deep-fried cheese may not be the healthiest recipe, but when served with this crunchy chopped salad you can ease your conscience at least a little bit. Time taken 45 minutes / Serves 4 sunflower oil, for deep frying 375g/13 oz halloumi cheese 2 tbsp plain (all purpose) flour 1 tsp paprika ½ tsp sumac For the fattoush 1 pitta bread extra virgin olive oil ½ cos lettuce 3 ripe tomatoes ¼ cucumber, halved and seeds removed 75g/2½ oz radishes, halved or quartered 3 spring onions (scallions), chopped small bunch parsley, chopped small bunch mint, chopped juice of ½ lemon 2 tbsp pomegranate seeds 1 tbsp pomegranate molasses 4 tbsp natural (plain) yoghurt flaked sea salt and freshly ground black pepper Heat the oven to 200ºC/400ºF/gas 6. Brush the pitta or flatbread with a little olive oil and bake for about 15 minutes until golden and crisp. Cool slightly, then break into small pieces.
Cut the lettuce, tomatoes and cucumber into small irregular chunks and put into a bowl with the radish, spring onions, parsley and mint. Toss with the lemon juice, a good glug of extra virgin olive oil and season with salt and pepper. Set aside while you make the halloumi chips. Heat a pan or deep fat fryer no more than one-third full of sunflower oil to 180ºC/350ºF. It will be hot enough when a small piece of bread dropped into it turns golden within 30 seconds. While the oil is heating, cut the halloumi into chip shapes. Combine the flour and paprika and toss the halloumi in it to coat. Fry in batches for a couple of minutes until golden. Drain on kitchen paper, serve onto plates and sprinkle with the sumac. Toss the baked pitta into the fattoush and finish by scattering over the pomegranate seeds and drizzling with the pomegranate molasses and natural yoghurt. Flexible Add a batch of sardine ‘fries’ to the halloumi. Dust 8 cleaned and deheaded sardines in the seasoned flour mixture and deep fry in the hot oil for 2–3 minutes until golden.

JOHN HALL ITALIAN JOURNEYS
John Hall Italian Journeys
John Hall’s meticulously planned tours have a personal flavour and style different from those of the tourist industry. These are the original ITALIAN JOURNEYS, quality tours for adults, a branch of the renowned John Hall PreUniversity Course in Venice which was founded in 1965 for gap-year students. Resident in Italy for the last 38 years, John Hall’s knowledge of Venice, Vicenza, Rome and the less known regions, of the countryside, of undiscovered trattorie, of hidden works of art, together with his appreciation of traditional regional cuisine and wines make for an insider’s programme. Variety, originality and enjoyment, ITALIAN JOURNEYS make those who come feel more like invited guests than part of a package – a truly epicurean experience. John Hall founded the Pre-University Course in Venice in 1965, which he still directs today. Italian Journeys began in 1974 at the request of parents who sent their children on the Venice Course. As well as occasional writing for The Times, The Field and Hortus, Hall published his memoirs “Gondolas and Grapes: Enterprises in Italy” in 2002. Living in the Marche in Central Italy, he and his wife care for various fowl, dogs and cats and cultivate a vineyard and olive grove. John profoundly believes that experiencing Italy is an essential step towards understanding and enjoying life. The Spring tour “Venice - the Brenta Riviera Vicenza:The Venetian Republic from Lagoon Origins to Mainland Expansion” will run from 18th to 24th March 2018. This tour will include wonderful trips to the Altino Museum, Torcello and S. Marco by night. Participants will also visit villas on the Brenta river by boat, the Palladian Villa Malcontenta and Vicenza, as well as some fabulous wine tastings in private villas in the countryside. The Autumn tour “Rome - Palaces,Villas and Churches: A Private View” will run from 11th to 17th October 2018. This tour is the ultimate insiders’ view to include wonderful visits to Hadrian’s Villa, the Villa d’Este at Tivoli, Palazzo Odescalchi, Villa Borghese, Palazzo Doria-Pamphilij, the Pantheon, Sant’Agostino, Santa Maria del Popolo, Palazzo Museo Barberini and many more! Testimonials
All my reservations about joining a tour were quickly dispelled. I cannot praise too highly the excellent planning and organisation and your sensitive handling of people.Thank you for one of the best holidays we have ever had.And what a very friendly and pleasant party we were.An added point is that everyone thought they were getting a very good money’s worth.
‘
It was a special pleasure to discover the luxurious and leisurely holidays run by John Hall in his Italian Journeys programme. They aim for a special market. But the larger companies could learn a lot from them, for Italian Journeys combine a little learning with a true taste of Italy. To say that they are run as something of a hobby is not to belittle their professionalism. The attention to detail has been meticulous. In ten years of travel writing, it is hard to think of an organised trip I have enjoyed more.

Intelligent company, then, a fascinating itinerary, a comfortable base and arrangements as slick and efficient as one could wish for. It was perfectly arranged, not a day which was not completely satisfying.
‘
I want to thank you for gathering together in Venice the most delightful selection of kindred spirits. We all enjoyed ourselves immensely. It is not often that I go somewhere and then am reluctant to go home.
‘
We thoroughly enjoyed Venice and very much appreciated all you did to make it such a success. For me one of the great highlights was indeed my day in the lagoon in the steps of Hemingway. Quite literally, I saw with my own eyes the scenes which he conjured up so vividly in his writings. For me it was truly memorable.
‘
This is to congratulate you on leading such a unanimously acclaimed successful trip to Rome. Everything about it was such a success, not least the selection of guests who, without exception, seemed to enjoy each other’s company. A master stroke was Frank Dabell, our art historian, the scope of whose erudition was wider than his primary task and whose ability with words was inspiring. I shall forever remember his masterful exposition of the Pantheon. And then, unobtrusively observing, was ever the master mind, John Hall. RETIREMENT

FLY THE NEST TO
FIJI
it is said to once be the home to swashbuckling high-seas; tales locals will happily tell. The first colonial capital of Fiji, Levuka, is a great day trip for those keen to marvel at a quaint port town, surrounded by swaying coconut palms. It has been protected under the UNESCO World Heritage Sites and seeks to further Fiji’s mission to be environmentally conscious. Levuka is the perfect destination to visit if you’re wanting to explore the historical side of Fiji as this is one of the many places that historical artefacts and documents are proudly displayed and preserved. For those wishing to delve deeper in to the heritage of Fiji, there’s nothing better than a trip to one of the many local villages. At the top of a mountain range in Yasawa, a beautiful panoramic view of the 200
year old village can be found. Home to roughly 1,000 Fijians, the country is beautiful from atop the mountain or amongst the streets. With a unique blend of cultures, Fiji is rich with history and traditions. Mixing with the friendly locals (Fijians are known as some of the happiest people in the world) at a local Kava ceremony is a guaranteed way to feel the warmth and hospitable nature of Fijians. Synonymous with life in the South Pacific, Fijian Kava – made from the crushed root of the Yaqona (pronounced yang-GO-na) - is a traditional drink to celebrate or welcome and bless guests. Barefoot Manta Island is just one of the islands that can be discovered. A marine protected area, situated in between three beautiful beaches; Sunrise Beach for the early birds, Sunset Beach for those who enjoy an afternoon cocktail and Manta Ray Beach, which overlooks the well-known Manta Ray channel. Fly the nest to Fiji; The perfect getaway
I
ndulging in sophisticated adventures and booking once in a life time trips, many parents are swapping briefcases for beaches and school runs for sunshine, as they savour the time they have to themselves. As your children have grown and flown the nest, it’s now the perfect time to think about where your next getaway will take place. With approximately 333 islands to choose from, set in the South Pacific, Fiji is a country full of welcomes for any traveller. Only a handful are inhabited, while most are full of vibrant smiles and unforgettable experiences. It’s never a difficult task when deciding on a destination that is not only beautiful but is conscious of the environment. The town of Savusavu, situated in Vanua Levu, Fiji’s second largest island, is a key location for those who desire an ecofriendly environment and ease of accessibility from New Zealand and Australia. Ideal for travellers who wish to be mindful of the ecosystem whilst still making the most of their holiday, the town is set in the Fijian Province of Cakaudrove and is known as “the hidden paradise of Fiji.” Set in beautiful surroundings, with a protected bay that is popular for mooring yachts, Savusavu will not only capture hearts but also imaginations, as

Discovering the hidden gems of Fiji has never been easier, with a great range of transport available from local buses, ferry rides, tax and car rentals. There is more than one way to capture the stunning views of the sandy beaches and beautiful coral reefs. Travellers can even marvel at Fiji’s beauty by taking to the skies in a helicopter for a beautiful aerial view of the islands. Now easier than ever to reach, Fiji Airways provides flights from Singapore and San Francisco to Fiji. Fiji

ince leaving formal employment in July 1989, I have been a ‘wandering scholar’, researching into the eighteenth and early nineteenth century social history of Scotland, the Isle of Man and Cumbria. This research has been undertaken in national and local archive centres and record offices, in libraries and museums and in private archives. It has led to a series of lectures and talks; exhibitions and guided walks; smuggling trails by minibus, and over thirty books. Two Thousand Five Hundred Cumberland and Westmoreland Folk (2006) is based on fifty years of the stewards’ accounts at Dalemain house and 2,000 and More Manx Mariners (2016) describes nearly 3,000 seamen and their exploits. During the research, more than 20,000 people have been identified and indexed. This information does not usually include details about their births, marriages and deaths. Instead I have recorded everything about their lifestyles, whether they were rich or poor, honest or dishonest: where they lived; what they wore, ate, drank, read; the furniture they sat or slept on; their favourite entertainment; what their garden looked like; their ailments and which herbal remedies they used; RETIREMENT

their occupation: merchant, shopkeeper, physician, apothecary, writer, miller, farmer, blacksmith, labourer, mariner; were they a banker or customs officer, a forger or smuggler (or all at once)? who were their friends, and enemies? There is only space here for details about one person. After a short military career, in 1753 Andrew X became a customs officer at Turnberry in Ayrshire. The custom house letterbooks for Ayr give details of his career, including his successes and failures. There is more. In May 1760, he was decoyed from his home ‘by sundry persons’, who made him ride for more than half a mile ‘on a pole supported by themselves’. He was then left in the open fields, ‘unable to return to his own house without the assistance of his wife’. X claimed that this punishment was because of his diligence as a customs officer and he wanted his superiors at Ayr to take action against the offenders. They refused, explaining to the Board of Customs in Edinburgh that similar punishment was ‘very commonly inflicted by the mob, as being both ignominious in itself and proper to deter capricious husbands from abusing their authority over their wives’. RETIREMENT LIVING Introduction by Alastair Wallbanks
s the theme tune to a wellknown soap opera suggests, “Everybody needs good neighbours”, is never as germane perhaps as in one’s retirement. Living in a community with likeminded people of a similar age while retaining your independence. There are companies who specialise in providing custom designed accommodation creating retirement communities. Among the many benefits of this type of living is that you can rent your apartment or cottage as opposed to buying outright.
THE HAWTHORNS offers a unique concept of luxury
apartment-style retirement communities set within modern purpose built facilities. The company was founded in the US more than 30 years ago and has now become one of the largest and most successful operators of retirement communities in the world. They launched their first project in the UK to much acclaim in 1985 and are now owned and operated by British company Avery Healthcare. Many purchase options are leasehold rather than freehold, and all carry additional costs in ground rent, maintenance and service charges, which obviously may increase. Many purchased retirement properties can only be sold back to the developer at their valuation and most charge ‘exit’ fees that can vary from 1% to 10% of the value. A costly solution, with outgoings that are not easy to budget. The good news is that there is an alternative, where a fixed monthly rental covers everything, and there are no hidden costs. No property or garden maintenance, no council tax, no utility bills, no weekly housekeeping charges, and even the bedlinen laundry is done for you. You choose how warm you want your central heating, or how much hot water you use. For further details on Hawthorns retirement options see page 20.
knowing that you remain in your home for as long as you wish. They also offer Assured Shorthold Tenancies on some properties. These are typically from 1 to 3 years, with no commitment beyond the initial term. Whatever you decide, it is good to know that your rent includes services and maintenance, removing the worry about the upkeep of your property and its surroundings. Whether you wish to live a totally independent life or have a degree of support, settle by the sea or live in a rural idyll, they are certain to have a property which fulfils your expectations.
RETIRE IN EUROPE (www.retireineurope.property)
is a new website aimed to assist the over 55’s to choose the most suitable retirement destination and property in Europe. With 25 years of experience in the property world, Richard Edds is now focusing on the growing retirement market. The UK is way ahead of most other European Countries in the number of purposebuilt villages and apartments designed for the older generation. As travelling gets easier, many of us dream of retiring somewhere warm, with a lower cost of living – France, Spain, Portugal, Cyprus, even Morocco. Spoilt for choice, except when you start to look for a single storey bungalow or apartment with easy access to shops, restaurants, medical support, security and comfort. At Retire in Europe they believe that retirement must be what people want, not just what they need. A single bedroom in a block of flats in a busy town in the UK is often more expensive than a detached bungalow with garden, garage and full hotel services in France. A new concept for retirement in comfort, privacy, security and a community of like-minded people, the aim of Retire in Europe is to select purpose-built facilities throughout Europe and Morocco and to assist in deciding the most suitable for all budgets. So if you’re tempted by a 1M€ penthouse overlooking a marina in Cyprus - look no further. Not everyone wants to stop work and they offer a choice of lifestyle changes such as campsites and gites. With all this on offer it makes retirement seem like one long holiday.

t The Hawthorns independent retirement living communities we place great value on supporting you to be proactive about managing your health and well-being. This helps you to get the most out of life, to enjoy your chosen retirement lifestyle and maintain life skills that support your independence. Positive well-being means experiencing an overall feeling of happiness and satisfaction with life and is achieved through being able to do those things that bring you pleasure and contentment. How we choose to spend our time will depend on our own individual interests and preferences and the lifestyle we wish to lead. It’s useful to know that our well-being can be enhanced by taking part in a balance of activities that help us to be physically active, mentally stimulated and socially connected. At The Hawthorns we have such a comprehensive Well-being Programme designed to support your mind, body and soul. For your physical well-being it is important to maintain balance, strength and co-ordination, and to improve posture and increase flexibility. You may like to take part in exercise classes such as Keep-Fit, Music and Movement,Yoga, Pilates or Tai Chi; alternatively, you may prefer to play bowls or enjoy a game of table tennis. We have a wide range of classes to ensure you maintain your confidence whatever level of activity you wish to pursue. Retaining a connection with nature and the outdoors is important and brings health benefits, through gardening, nature walks or involvement in wildlife conservation. Our private minibus can take you out on one of RETIREMENT today
our weekly trips to ensure that you continue to enjoy such experiences and maintain a connection with the local community too. A positive mindset helps you to feel confident and motivated to take part in the activities you enjoy. At The Hawthorns you can engage in a favourite pastime or perhaps discover talents with something different, or learn a new skill to stimulate and challenge your mind; you may even have a skill or hobby that you’d like to share with others. We also have a regular flow of guests and speakers coming in to our community to talk about and share their interests. Diet and nutrition are also a vital part of your well-being and our highly trained chefs provide delicious, well-balanced and vitaminenriched dining, whilst not forgetting the treats in life such as a glass of wine or a home-made cake. One of the most important elements of well-being though is sharing activities and experiences with others, through simple things such as spending time with established friends and family, as this helps keep you connected to your past as well as your present. Reminiscing with those close to you about your life’s events and memories is joyous and precious and is a great source of positive emotions and feelings. It is also good to meet new people as well, make new friends, discover shared interests and enjoy their company. The Hawthorns are communities of like-minded individuals who have made a similar choice about how they want to spend their retirement, so you are amongst friends straightaway. Unlike many retirement living options that are little more than apartments,
The Hawthorns offers a complete lifestyle that is tailored to your needs and preferences, and enables you to take part in just what you want and when you want. A final part of that well-being is the lack of worry and the removal of stress. You’ve worked hard to for your retirement and deserve to enjoy it. The unique Hawthorns Rental Model is a fixed monthly charge with no hidden extras and truly all-inclusive, so you know where you stand and budgeting is easy. No more worries about property or garden maintenance, utility bills, council tax, cooking and food bills, weekly housekeeping, or driving on days out. There’s also no of the costs associated with a purchase (such as stamp duty, legal fees or searches), and importantly no punitive exit fees. It’s nice to be free of all of that. We do all this for you, so you just have to focus on enjoying your retirement. Come and see where your health and well-being can flourish. Search ‘Hawthorns Retire’ on-line or on Facebook.

Beating Knee Pain
Advertising feature
Good vibrations are the key to a new treatment for osteoarthritis say consultants Doctors have been looking for a successful treatment for osteoarthritic knee pain for many years. Although knee replacement surgery is generally successful, most patients who are referred are not suitable for surgery. Until recently these patients could only be treated with medication or weight loss and exercise. Painkillers can be very effective, however there can be risks associated with their long term use and many patients simply don’t like the idea of having to take long term medication for their knee pain. Whilst weight loss is often very effective, many patients often can’t manage this and exercising the knee is difficult when the knee is painful. What was needed was a breakthrough treatment which was easy to use, safe and with no side effects. In fact, such a treatment has been available for over 150 years! In 1892 during the american civil war a technique was discovered that is becoming increasingly available today as a method of treating pain. With no available anaesthetics for battlefield use it was discovered that injured soldiers with painful amputation stumps could obtain pain relief by having the painful stump ‘drummed’ with drumsticks at a particular frequency. This produced pain relief lasting for many hours.
Vibration Technology Explained
It was only in the early 1960’s that two scientists Merzack and Wall discovered the process and named it the ‘gate theory of pain’. They found that stimulating the
‘I bought about 3 weeks ago - amazing results after suffering constant pain for last 3 years. Tried cortisone, physio referral to specialists etc but nothing worked. Was living on paracetamol just to get through the day. Now almost pain free - thanks! Mrs W, Sussex

There was also a reduction in stiffness of the knee joint and greater mobility which enabled many patients to take up gentle exercise and to start weight loss programmes. Although the device isn’t a miracle cure for osteoarthritis, trials have shown the vibration therapy can allow the user to obtain significant pain relief. In the case of some patients, this allowed them to both delay the need for a knee replacement and to reduce their medication use.

vibration sensors in the body causes the pain signal to be blocked on its way to the brain, producing a pain relieving effect. This is due to the spinal column being unable to carry both the pain signal and vibration signal together. The introduction of the vibratory signal ‘closed the gate’ to the pain signal.

BOOKS AS DECORATION ‘I would be most content if my children grew up to be the kind of people who think decorating consists mostly of building enough bookcases’ (Anna Quindlen). Books not only enrich the mind – they are increasingly designed to appeal to the eye. From towers to tableaux, from colourcoded stacks to leather-bound tomes on tables, the book’s ability as an aesthetic aid should not be underestimated.

‘Books are not made for furniture, but there is nothing else that so beautifully furnishes a house.’ When the Congregationalist preacher Henry Ward Beecher wrote these words in the mid-19th century, most educated homes of the middling sort possessed a small library of sombrely bound volumes neatly corralled into a parlour, study or alcove. Their decorative potential, in other words, was limited. Nowadays, despite competition from other media, new titles continue to pour out of publishing houses, which often put as much effort into making their form desirable as they do into ensuring their content is worthwhile. An eye-catching jacket helps a book stand out in a crowded marketplace. And while such elements as decorative endpapers, heavy paper stock and glossy photographs all add to a publisher’s costs – and therefore the price consumers pay for the end product – books are, relative to income, cheap compared to the past. This can mean that bibliophiles have large numbers of these aesthetically pleasing objects and not enough shelf space to house them. PILES AND PLATFORMS
If that’s the case, make a virtue out of necessity. An artfully positioned stack of books can lead the eye towards an unassuming but finely executed pencil sketch in the corner of the room; equally it can divert attention away from a window with its eyesore of a tower block beyond. Speaking of which, a single ‘skyscraper’ of 30 or more books in the corner creates a powerful vertical accent among beds, low coffee tables and sprawling sofas, but they should be arranged in strictly diminishing order of size for added stability. Ideally, too, books should be regularly rotated into and out of this arrangement, so that bindings are not crushed over time. There are practical
downsides, it must be said, not least the difficulty in retrieving the copy you want. Hi-fi equipment and Ming vases should be kept well away from the topple radius, and if your household includes pets or toddlers, you might as well forget the idea. Large books that rarely need to be consulted can form an eye-catching base for a glass table-top – likewise serving as pedestals for speakers or telephones. For these kind of semipermanent arrangements, think about positioning the books to create chromatic rhythms with, say, red- or black-coloured spines recurring at regular intervals. Nabokov wrote: ‘In reading one should notice and fondle details.’ The same applies to
Catherine Gratwicke
Debi Treloar
little tableaux that can be created on coffee tables, side chairs and cabinets. An antique lamp looks great propped up on a couple of matching faded leather tomes, while two low equal piles of books at either end of a bench in a hallway might echo the symmetry of the pictures or wall sconces on the wall above. In the warm months, when the fire is never lit, fill a wicker basket with a stack of art books and place it on a waxed wooden floor by the hearth – you instantly perk up a moribund spot.
BOOKENDS
Bookends mean that you can enliven narrow surfaces, such as console tables, mantelpieces or reasonably wide window-sills, with little vertical runs. These simple devices work by a mixture of gravity and friction – the taller and heavier the block, and the rougher the contact between bookend and underlying surface, the stronger the support. For the kind of vignettes that we’re currently discussing, though, you should forget the largeformat coffee-table titles and the
heavy cast-iron brackets or massive mahogany Ls that they would call for. Given the relatively simple physical forces at work, product designers have carte blanche to let their imaginations rip. Witty examples include a bold ‘A’ and ‘Z’; ‘pushing’ and ‘leaning’ Soviet Realist-style workers; and a Chinese dragon’s head at one end, with its tail emerging at the other end of the row. Most eye-catching of all is two ‘halves’ of a goldfish bowl, complete with live tropical specimens, which leave what they enclose frankly upstaged. Books Make a Home is available to readers at the special price of £14.99 including postage & packaging (rrp £19.99) by telephoning Macmillan Direct on 01256 302 699 and quoting the reference LZ6.

Swallowing difficulties, persistent cough and snoring The untold number of people that suffer from swallowing difficulties – dysphagia – is huge. As is the number with snoring and sleep apnoea – sometimes in conjunction with dysphagia. Difficulties like this can hit anyone, and at any age. Now there is a neuromuscular treatment, IQoro®, which trains the slack internal musculature and allows people to regain their former quality of life.
Jane suffered from persistent reflux - IQoro, her saviour
Jane was eating lunch one day when she was struck by intense heartburn. She recalls that episode. - It was extremely unpleasant and returned several times during the week. The problem worsened, she became nauseous, her voice was rendered hoarse and croaky, and food she had just swallowed started to run back up into her pharynx. - I raised my head on pillows at night, but it didn’t help. I hardly slept at all, and was always tired. Jane lost her zest for life and became apathetic. Eventually she visited the doctor, and ended up returning home with antacid medicines that seemed only to worsen her condition. - The medicine was terrible. I felt so bad and the tablets gave me stomach upset, she said. Jane’s family grew increasingly concerned. They could see her suffering, and her dramatic weight loss – eight kilograms in just a few weeks. During another visit to the doctor, Jane underwent a gastroscopy, and was diagnosed with a Hiatus hernia. But the formal diagnosis only led to new medication, which eased the symptoms somewhat, but did not restore her to her previously sound health. Around this time, feeling desperate, she turned to the Internet. - I came across a Facebook support group of people with the same health issues, and from there I learned of a woman who had been hugely helped by a Swedish treatment method. The method, based on research, and the information on the site, felt reliable to Jane. IQoro® treated the underlying problem causing the symptoms – the actual hernia itself – not just symptoms. - That really caught my attention, so I ordered one. A few days later Jane started her training with IQoro®. After just a few weeks she felt that she had turned a corner. - The horrible sensations of nausea, heartburn and the reflux went away. Further - more, I could keep my food down, and could finally sleep, and could discontinue with the not-very-useful medicines.
I hardly dared believe it, that I had overcome this. But time proved that I had. Jane returning to her normal weight, as well as her sunnier outlook on life. To date she has been training for about five months with IQoro®. Asked if she is completely recovered, she sounds profoundly grateful. - I’m not 100% yet, but I’m almost there. I’ve had heartburn a few times but it turned out that I had over-trained a little, you should only train three times for 5-10 seconds before So mealtimes, three times per day. un It could also be because I’d to ds t H o started drinking coffee and cu ear be tr o g eating chocolate again, when sto w ue oo h ? d maybe I should waited a little iqo mer at o while longer. Otherwise, I can ro. s sa ur now eat everything these days, co y m at with no discomfort at all. Asked if she would recommend ® IQoro to someone with the same difficulties: - Absolutely! Training is simple and you can avoid medicines. It might sound like a cliché, but I have got my life back again thanks to IQoro®.

The Russia Season: Royal Fabergé & Radical Russia
Sainsbury Centre, Norwich Now until 11 February To mark the anniversary of the Russian Revolution, the Sainsbury Centre is staging two major exhibitions contrasting art, life and culture in Russia before and after the Revolution. The first exhibition Royal Fabergé explores the extraordinary production and glittering saga of Fabergé, the leading artist-jewellers during the decades preceding the First World War. More than 60 Sandringham-linked loans from the Royal Collection – in addition to the magnificent Basket of Flowers Imperial Easter Egg from 1901 – provides the centrepiece of the exhibition. Another highlight of this exhibition is Sandringham animals, illustrating the naturalistic genius of Fabergé which so appealed to Royal tastes both in Britain and in Russia. Part of the second exhibition Radical Russia see’s a dramatic 10-metre model of Tatlin’s tower conceived as the most iconic architectural project of the Soviet era, though never built. This can be seen in the sculpture park alongside the centre. www.scva.ac.uk

Paintings on display range from multiple portraits of himself and his wife, Hortense Fiquet, Cézanne’s remarkable portrayals of his Uncle Dominque, through to his final portraits of the gardener Vallier, who helped in his studio. www.npg.org.uk

Streatlam Castle: Rediscover the home of John and Joséphine Bowes Bowes Museum, County Durham Now until 11 March.
In March 1950 the remains of Streatlam Castle vanished in a series of huge explosions. The great mansion, a shadow of what it had once been, became unsafe and was demolished. The home where John Bowes had been brought up, and where he had lived for much of his life, had effectively been oblitereated. And yet .. not every trace had been erased. This exhibition shows how Streatlam looked in its heyday, illustrating the appearance of the house, both outside and in, displaying some of its furnishings and contents, while rebuilding an image of the home where John pursued his personal interests and entertained friends. A Victorian gentleman, certainly, but one who was pretty out of the ordinary in many ways as this exhibition will tell. www.bowesmuseum.org.uk Evening Dress, tartan silk by Madame Elise about 1870 Evening Dress, lilac silk by Morin Blossier about 1893 Credit: Fashion Museum-Bath
Royal Women
Fashion Museum, Bath From 2 Feb 2018 – 28 April 2019 A family tree exhibition, with clothes worn by successive generations of the women in the British Royal family is on show at The Fashion Museum, one of the world’s great museum collections of historical and contemporary fashionable dress. See exquisite original items of dress, amongst others, worn by Queen Alexandra, Queen Mary, Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother and Princess Margaret. Wives and daughters, sisters and mothers; none of them were regnant yet they all played a key role in the British monarchy. This exhibition examines their sartorial lives, looking at each women’s unique style, the role they played within the monarchy and how that was reflected in their choice of dress. www.fashionmuseum.co.uk

PARK LIFE By Alastair Wallbanks
T
he Concise Oxford Dictionary defines retirement as, “the act or an instance of retiring”, that is “to leave office or employment esp. because of age”, a significant change of life style in any language. So where will your retirement take you? Why not take advantage of this change and use it as an opportunity for a complete transformation of life style and consider buying or moving to a park home. Park homes are detached bungalow styles of property coming in a range of layouts and designs, located in private estates many of which have secure gated entry and their own on site leisure facilities and amenities. Among the benefits of this type of property is that they are an affordable alternative to more traditional homes, making them ideal for people who are retired or about to retire, and most parks have a minimum age restriction. Homes are designed with triple glazing and double the insulation of a standard home which doesn’t just benefit the environment, but can lead to a reduction in heating and energy bills of up to 50%. There are a number of companies specializing in park living most of whom own the residential parks.

Leading residential and retirement park developer, Killarney Homes, recognises the importance of your retirement which is why their parks combine style, convenience and security. They own three parks in rural Nottinghamshire designed exclusively for over 45’s. Established over 50 years ago by David and Sheila Kellam, their son Gary joined the family business at the age of 16. Today, Gary’s children Sophie and Alex run the business with the same amount of enthusiasm as their dad, “We eat, breathe and sleep park homes!” says Sophie, who fondly remembers playing on the sites as a child. “We’re still a small family business, but we pride ourselves being small enough to care and experienced enough to cope.” When asked why people choose to
buy park homes, Marketing Manager Sophie Brown said, “It’s generally people close to retirement age or thinking about making that ‘final move’, their children have flown the nest and they want to downsize and clear out clutter.” Sophie went on to explain that park homes are on one level which appeals to those far sighted enough to think ahead to old age, also that they are low maintenance. Other pleasing attributes are that each home has its own private driveway and generous, but not enormous, garden which is easy to look after. Sophie further stated, “All our parks have gated entrances and the residents are supplied with a card or fob to gain access.” Willow Park is one of their sites located in the village of Calverton between a beautiful golf course and stunning countryside, providing an idyllic environment. Among its amenities are a selection of pubs, shops, doctor’s surgery, library and post office, with Nottingham city centre only 10 miles. There is a regular bus service which stops outside the park and also a courtesy bus several times a week to take residents into the local town and village. The combination of the sense of community, tranquillity and security has a great appeal for the residents, one of whom described it as, “Like being on holiday permanently.”

Killarney Park is another hidden gem, located just six miles from the city of Nottingham. The Park can offer you the serenity of the countryside with all the conveniences of modern day life nearby. Sophie continued, “The Lakeside Restaurant & Spa is at the end of Lamins Lane and with several golf courses, country walks, pubs and restaurants within a three mile radius, you’ll never be short of something to do!” JJ Cooper Group Park Estates is another company specialising in this type of living. The company was started by Joseph J Cooper Snr in the late eighties. In 2005 JJ Cooper Snr was congratulated by the Deputy Prime Minister’s office for his achievements as a park owner and the services provided to his residents. Although a family operated business, they employ a large staff to ensure the smooth running of their parks and to look after the welfare of their residents and they now have over 30 years’ experience owning and running residential parks. Today the Group operate eight residential parks across the south of England and again because their parks
are also for those aged 45 and over the majority of residents are either retired or semi-retired Most of their parks have gated entry and some have CCTV, not because it is necessary but, as James Cooper, one of the partners said, “The residents requested it to make them feel more secure.” All JJ Cooper Group Park Estates have local amenities within walking distance. James said that among the many benefits of owning a park home was the home can be gifted to a relative on the death of the owner. He went on to say, “If you bought one of these homes in the nineties the trend then was that it would depreciate in value, whereas today because of rising popularity and demand that trend has reversed and the value of
Coopers - windsor-park-home
park homes is now appreciating. Residing in a park home has become an extremely fashionable and well respected way of living.” As previously mentioned the parks owned by this group have many leisure facilities, for example at California Country Park located adjacent to California Lakes in Finchampstead, Berkshire, fishing, walks and golf are just a few. While the business has grown to around 8oo residential pitches, the day to day management of the parks runs smoothly as JJ Cooper Snr intended making sure that both his sons and staff are always on hand to serve the residents in a friendly and professional manner. The reason this style of living is becoming increasingly more popular is mostly attributable to the ecological and financial benefits that can be gained from it. To quote Mark Twain, “Age is an issue of mind over matter. If you don’t mind, it doesn’t matter”.

hristmas is the season for giving but sometimes it feels like the huge commercialism of the season is not in keeping with the original spirit. Presents received can become quickly discarded or put to the back of a drawer and often forgotten about. Animal adoption or sponsorship is a fantastic way of giving someone a truly memorable gift and at the same time making a wonderful contribution to animal welfare. Not just for Christmas, but for birthdays and special occasions too. It really is a gift that keeps on giving. It can be a great choice for children and adults who for whatever reason are unable to keep a pet at home, and it can also build a lifetimes relationship with a charity. The details of animal adoption vary slightly but the essentials remain the same. Here are some examples as great choices for potential adoptees – take a look and why not this year give a truly giving gift.

Catastrophes Cat Rescue
Set in ancient parkland, Buttercups Sanctuary for Goats provides animals that have suffered, with a safe and loving home for the rest of their lives. Animals come into their care for all sorts of reasons. Many are simply abandoned, left without food and water, others are neglected or abused by their owners, or in some cases their owners are just no longer able to look after them. Their work is in great demand, travelling far and wide rescuing abandoned and maltreated goats. Whatever the circumstances, Buttercups take them into their care where their experience of cruelty is replaced with love, kindness and understanding. Sometimes, where possible they are rehomed with suitable carers. Costs are considerable and without adoption, the work of Buttercups Goat Sanctuary would be impossible. Adoption also helps to raise awareness of their work as those who adopt an animal get to take part in open days, giving people the opportunity to come and see their adopted goat give them a cuddle and work with them, feeding, grooming and if you feel energetic helping maintain their accommodation. All goats have their own real characters and for just £20 per year, you can adopt a goat like Bilbo, Twizzle or Pooky, as shown here, knowing that you will be contributing towards their costs and care. A great present – either for yourself or for that ‘hard to buy for’ relative or friend. For further information www.buttercups.org.uk

A propos apero
2) WHAT TO DRINK
We are of the half and half variety of “Languedoc Livers”. We have one leg in, one leg out of the pantalon of French life. We straddle the channel. We are Bobby-Both-Ways. Go either way for a toffee apple. So a few things still remain a mystery. We have various friends with holiday homes nearby and, as fabulous and funny as they are, there is something they just don’t get. Apero. We invite them for apero and they turn up at 9.00pm. “Oh, we thought you’d have eaten by now. We were waiting til you’d finished eating.” Well, we hadn’t finished eating. We hadn’t even started, because we were waiting to you to come for a drink before we ate. Now I won’t get any dinner and I’ll be drinking on an empty stomach and be hugging the porcelain at 3.am. So we tried inviting them out for an aperitif. “We’ll meet you at 6.30 at that bar then.” “Ok, great, there might be a band on there later. So we’ll grab a pizza first. Do you want to join us?” No. NO. NOOOOOO. So for them and anyone else similarly unenlightened, here is an apero guide.
1) WHAT IT IS
Aperitif means “something sipped before a meal”, deriving from the Latin, aperire, “to unlock or open”. It’s a drink intended therefore, to “open up” the appetite, to whet or stimulate it. It’s usually accompanied by a gouter, or snack, and occurs roughly between 6.00 and 8.30 in the evening. If you are enjoying the buzz and conviviality at your local bar, happen to nip to the loo round about 8.00ish, come out expecting the nods and winks of sociable familiarity – you will in fact be Norman-No-Mates as everyone will have made a run for it to eat their dinner. It wasn’t something you said. The French also regard this time as a punctuation mark between the busy working day and the evening, a sociable and convivial prelude to the ceremony of a leisurely dinner.
You might think that a can of cider and a BBQ Pringle is the height of sophistication, but now we are virtually French, standards and Duralex glasses must be raised.

udith Dowden has been a long term Francophile ever since her first French lesson at the age of 7, in a demure English private school. Madame roared up to the school gates in a little red sports car, wearing a snazzy brown suede jacket and Chanel Rouge lipstick. Judith was smitten. She travelled to France at every opportunity and then, towards the end of a career as a lecturer, achieved her dream of owning a house in a small French village. Judith trained as a Graphic Designer and has spent her career in that industry as both a practitioner and teacher. Graphics is all about communication through words and images and, wherever Judith travels in the world, she is compelled to document it through writing, photography and drawings. She has spent her working life in and around London, where she lives with her husband, an artist. Together they have travelled extensively throughout the United States, Japan, Australia and Europe. Her travel writing has won prizes and she is a regular blogger and a popular contributor to a magazine that covers the Languedoc, where her French house sits. She is an experienced home exchanger and thoroughly recommends this method of travel. She is planning to publish a book about her unique experiences of swapping lives with others around the world. Judith divides her time between the buzz of London and the peaceful vineyards of the Minervois, relishing the contrast between the two locations. Vive les differences!

3) WHAT TO EAT
Sour, salty, smoky, spicy are all flavours that complement aperitifs - olives, nuts, pretzels, saucisson. But if you want to show off and do an “apero dinatoire”, which is a bit more elaborate, here are a few ideas. Get a grip though don’t get too carried away. By the time you’ve fiddled around with your own body weight in canapés, and been up all night wildly spearing satay sticks like a demented Zorro, for the same money and time you could have laid on a four course dinner and be done with it.

A suitable aperitif is a light, averagely alcoholic beverage, meant to ignite the appetite without numbing the senses, or taste buds. Therefore hard liquor is not usually offered. (Having said that, what finer words are there than, “I’m making Cosmos.”) It might just be a glass of Picpoul de Pinot or Champagne. Perhaps a Kir, with blackcurrant, blackberry, chestnut, violet, peach or raspberry liqueur, first invented in Burgundy in the 1940s, by Félix Kir. He was a hero of the Resistance during the Second World War and afterwards, the Mayor of Dijon. Canon Kir was a passionate supporter of Dijonnais products, including the local peasant white wine. However, it was highly acidic, so he added sweet Creme de Cassis to make it more palatable. But there are all sorts of other exciting aperitifs to discover - Lillet, Floc de Garonne, Ricard, Dubonnet, Suze, Noilly Prat, Aperol, Campari, Pineau de Charentes, Byrrh. These kinds of aromatic concoctions are often mixed from antiquated, secret herbal recipes and sometimes only available in the village from which they originate. A small beer is acceptable. Jeremy Clarkson, though some might say is a bit of a nob, wrote a very funny article in the Times pointing out ways to recognise British men in a French bar. For example, they are the ones guzzling back pints, as they just don’t regard it butch enough to drink beer in the smaller glasses favoured by their Gallic counterparts, who are comfortable enough with their own sexuality not to care. Which is why they also carry man bags.
Before serving dips you must make an assertive announcement about double dipping. Double dipping cannot be tolerated in a civilized society. No one should ever have to chew on someone else’s corner-mouth droppings. What if your guests have over active saliva glands? Beards? Colds? What if they are just stomach churningly ugly? If you don’t feel able to implement this rule, only serve solid food. Otherwise try these....... Cannellini beans mushed up with lots of olive oil, lemon juice and garlic.
Feta and watermelon. Figs wrapped in prosciutto, baked until the fig goes sweet and gooey, the ham salty and crisp.
Canapés The olive man on the market sells bags of golden, crunchy ready baked baguette rounds, if life is too short to do it your self. Smother them in combinations of....... Soft chevre and fig chutney Humus and Harissa Pate and cornichon Guacamole and creme fraiche Gorgonzola and honey Sour cream and salmon roe Sun dried tomato paste and feta
Roasted aubergine flesh pulped with Harissa, olive oil and garlic. Philly & chilli - cream cheese drizzled with sweet chilli sauce. For an easy hot fondue, bake a whole Camembert stuck with garlic cloves and rosemary sprigs. The cocktail stick is the apero host’s best friend. It’s also a very pleasing combination of consonants. Try it!
CoCKKKK-Tail-STiCKKK. Roll it round your tongue. Not literally obviously or you’ll loose a filling or end up looking like that bloke in “Hellraiser”. They are a brilliant invention and reasonable priced, having multiple purposes you can use them for toothpicks, manicures and sticking into the soft parts of guests you don’t like much, then innocently looking in the other direction. It is intensely irritating though, when people (men) don’t put the top on the box properly and you have to play mini “Pick Up Sticks” at the bottom of your kitchen cupboard.
All items to be cut into bite size chunks obviously. For example, mozzarella. A whole one per stick would be costly and difficult to get in your today

Peas puréed with plain yogurt, parmesan and mint.

mouth in one go, whilst maintaining an elusive air of sophistication. Mozzarella, basil leaf, cherry tomato. (Colours of the Italian flag/Xmas.)
Plump, salty oysters are always welcome and come packaged in their own handy dishes, over which to drizzle shallot vinegar and tabasco. Baked asparagus sticks, wrapped in Parma ham, sprinkled with Parmesan go down well, as do iced shot glasses of Gazpacho, lightly laced with vodka. A chum recently presented me with a beetroot version. Now personally, I would rather gnaw my own leg off than eat beetroot, but the colour was fabulous and I’m told it was delicious if you like that kind of thing.
4) WHAT TO DO AFTER APERO
A much admired friend, a role model really, told me that she recently had to stagger back from an apero party, lie down on the sofa and eat a family size bag of Maltezers. I can’t think of any way to top that, so I recommend that’s what everybody does. Well, it’s coming up to 6.30, so must dash. I’ve got an appointment with a vrac of co-op wine and a bag of Hoola Hoops. So next time I invite you GET IT RIGHT. I have a cocktail stick and I’m not afraid to use it.

Charity Begins At Christmas and Beyond
Let’s think about how we can help charities at Christmas and move forward, making 2018 our most charitable year yet.
C Charity Begins At Christmas and Beyond
hristmas is the season of good will and a time to give gifts to our loved ones. However, this year, let’s not just think about giving to friends and family. Charities work tirelessly all year round providing help and support to many in need, but do we spare a thought at this festive time as to how they manage to survive. This year why not add your favourite charity to your list. Most of the charities have websites which have a fantastic range of gifts available, suitable for children to grandparents. As well as gifts, why not order your Christmas cards from your favourite charity, your calendar for next year too! There are many ways in which you can help, it’s easier than you think. Here is an example:

The perfect gift for Christmas Take the stress out of present-buying this Christmas and put Woodland Trust dedications under the tree instead. Tree or woodland dedications are a unique and lasting gift for a loved one that they can treasure forever. And they give back to nature – every dedication helps the UK’s largest woodland conservation charity stand up for trees, woods and wildlife. Choose from specially selected woods throughout the UK to dedicate a single tree or larger areas of woodland. The Woodland Trust has newly created sites which will become the woodland of the future and enchanting and delightful mature woods. Every dedication is unique and all Woodland Trust woods are free to visit anytime. Woodland dedications of a quarter of an acre or more are also available – and there RETIREMENT

are options for personalised benches and marker posts too. To say thank you for dedicating, the Trust will send you a special Christmas dedications pack so you’ll have something to hand over on Christmas morning. The pack contains a certificate personalised with your own special message and details about the chosen wood. The pack includes information on how to get there and an outline map of the wood showing the dedication areas. You can even choose to send the pack directly to the lucky person! If you’ve left gift shopping until the last minute a tree dedication is just a few clicks away and the dedications pack can be emailed out instantly. Visit woodlandtrust.shop.com/Christmas or call 0330 333 3330 At this time of year many charities have Fetes and Christmas fairs and you can often pick up that unusual gift for a friend or family member, whilst at the same time contributing to raising much needed additional funds. Although Christmas is a great time to remember to help others, the best giving is regular giving. Setting up a monthly direct debit for just a few pounds a month allows charities to plan their long-term development. Ask yourself, would you really miss a few pounds a month? Around £10 a month would help charities in dire need which is just equivalent to a couple of glasses of wine in the pub. Finally, do remember charities when making a will. It’s an excellent way of leaving a donation to a charity you have supported in your lifetime and an easy method of providing long-term support. A legacy, no matter how small can make a huge difference.
You could give me the gift of life this Christmas. Please help & donate online at: WWW.childrenindistress.org or call Tina on 0141 559 5690
Reflect & remember A gift in memory of a loved one will directly benefit the lives of thousands of people in your area struggling with lung disease, heart disease or recovering from a stroke. Help us make sure no-one faces their condition alone.

Financial support for older people living on a low income The Friends of the Elderly grants service helps to relieve the stress and worry often experienced by older people living on a low income.
The grants they offer can contribute towards utility bills, household repairs, the purchase of mobility aids and the replacement of essential items that support daily living. They can also help with the cost of helping people to get and stay online. Mary, 78, contacted them after been diagnosed with lung cancer, feeling desperate and unable to cope. They contributed towards the cost of her heating bill. She said: “I wish I could really put into words just how much it means to have your help and support. The financial assistance is so reassuring. It really does make a difference, and means I don’t have to choose between keeping warm and eating. It is like a blanket on a cold night.” Grants are available to older people living in England and Wales who are over state retirement age and who are not care home residents. For more information: Call: 0330 332 1110 (Monday to Friday between 9am and 5pm) Email: hello@fote.org.uk Web: www.fote.org.uk

Providing a lifeline to the world Can you imagine not being able to read a newspaper, book, or this magazine? Think how lonely you would be having lost the confidence to venture out and without the television to watch. Many visually impaired people experience isolation like this every day. For almost 90 years, British Wireless for the Blind Fund has been the only charity providing specially adapted radios to blind and partially sighted people across the UK. For those who would not otherwise be able to afford this type of equipment, they offer a range of devices on free loan for as long as the recipients need the support. A radio not only provides companionship with a comforting voice in the room, it also helps people feel connected to the world around them with news, entertainment and sport. In fact 2 Premier league football giants now provide accessible free live commentary to our listeners. To be eligible to receive a device on free loan you need to be a resident in the UK who is registered blind or partially sighted, over the age of eight and in receipt of an income related benefit. Residents visit Our Lady at Aylesford Priory The Little Sisters of the Poor, a congregation of religious sisters, care for elderly people in need inspired by their faith. They welcome them into a family-like home, with understanding and mutual concern, showing respect for life and for the dignity and uniqueness of every person. They believe in enabling residents to fulfill their physical, social, emotional and spiritual needs and recently took the residents of St Anne’s Home in London on a pilgrimage to the shrine of Our Lady at Aylesford Priory in Kent. The Priory is an ancient religious house of the Order of Carmelites and dates back to the 13th Century. They attended Mass, enjoyed a good lunch with some free time before gathering to pray in one of the main Chapels. The day was a great success and enjoyed by all the staff and residents.
