Winter 2015 Session I After School Class Schedule
We will contact you only if a class is cancelled due to low enrollment.
You will be registered for the class and will hear back from the financial aid committee by January 6, 2015. All After School classes must be paid for by January 8, 2015. The amount of financial aid awarded for one (1) specialized after school class will be based on the percentage of aid a student receives for tuition, available aid, and the demand for classes.
Please check this on-line schedule for periodic changes, additions and updates. Sacred Heart is open after school for all sorts of fun, academic and personal enrichment. Check out the Student Life section of the School website for information about instrumental music and voice lessons, sports clinics and team practices, which are also being held after school.
Payment Policies Enrollment & Registration
Registration runs December 15 – January 8, 2015. To register for class, click here. First time users will need to setup an account. Payment must be made at the time of registration in order to reserve space in the class. (The one exception would be anyone requesting financial aid… see note below)
Classes will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis.
You will receive an automated confirmation of registered Classes. If you do not receive confirmation that you are registered, you should return to your login page and check your registration information. Remember, you are registered only if you receive confirmation (via email) of your class schedule.
Payment by credit card will be accepted. Upon receipt of payment, a confirmation of your registration will be emailed to you.
Scheduling
NOTE: If you received financial aid toward tuition for the 2014-2015 school year, you are eligible to apply for financial aid for one (1) specialized after school class. The deadline to apply for this financial aid is January 2, 2015. To apply for financial aid; you must register for the class first. During the online registration process, choose the desired class and check the box indicated to apply for Specialized After School Program Financial Aid. The box must be checked in order to apply. On the check out page please select “Pay the minimum amount due”.
Classes begin the week of January 12. There are two class sessions during Winter 2015. Some classes span Session I and II and run for 11 weeks. o Session I: January 12 – February 20 o Session II: February 23 – March 31 After School Classes do not meet on days that school is not in session (1/19 or 2/13 thru 2/17) . Please check individual class descriptions for the schedule of start and end dates for each class.
Cancellations & Refunds

Classes may be cancelled if they do not meet minimum enrollment. If a class is cancelled by the After School Office, you will be notified by email and issued a refund. You will not receive a refund if your child is absent or stops attending a class.
Core After School Program – Stay until 6:00 p.m.
Dismissal/Pick Up
After School Classes are offered in addition to the Core After school Program. Your child(ren) are welcome to stay at school after their class in the Core After School Program. Pickup must take place by 6:00 p.m. through the Portry. If your child’s class does not start until after 4:00 they will stay in the Core Program until their class meets. Children enrolled in After School Classes will report to the Core After School Program at dismissal. Their After School Class teacher will pick them up there at the start time for their class. Children will be dismissed by After School staff at the Rosemont door at the class-end time indicated on the schedule. Students whose parents do not pick them up within 10 minutes of class end-time will join the Core Program and must then be picked up through the Portry.

A healthy snack will be provided to every child participating in an After School Class. The cost of the snack is included in the Class fee.

Students will delight in making clay animals, pottery, and more. So much is possible working with this non-toxic clay that comes in a wide variety of colors and bakes to a hard form. Techniques and instruction using several different approaches towards manipulating this medium will expand any child’s creativity.

Come explore the foundations of theater with fun drama games, acting, improvisation, music and movement. In this unique class format, students will collaborate to create their very own play using their favorite Disney songs from popular shows as a jumping off point. Lego Engineering Academy Teacher: Staff from Chasewood Learning Age: 1st - 4th graders Dates: Mondays, January 12– February 9 (4 weeks) (No class held on 1/19) Time: 3:45-4:45 p.m. Fee: $108 + $5 materials fee = $113 Minimum Enrollment: 6; Maximum Enrollment: 20 Lego engineers in this class will learn about machines that move and how they move. By building race cars, cranes, a motorized dog, solar windmills and pneumatic lifts, boys and girls learn basic STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) concepts. Chasewood Learning provides teacher-led instruction followed by hands-on learning experiences. Students gain skills and confidence through creating, exploring and problem-solving. Children of all levels can take this class and are grouped by prior class experience. At the end of the session, students will be given a Lego gift.
Circus Fun for Everyone! CircEsteem’s unique program gives kids of all ages the chance to shine as center ring stars while learning how to juggle, clown around, spin plates, balance on a rolling globe and walk a tight wire. Every session ends with a fun filled performance where kids get to show off their new-found circus skills for friends and family. This class is perfect for first time or returning students.

Build an Italian Restaurant with Mrs. Carlucci
World Music Teacher: Jonathan Stopyra, Kindergarten Teaching Assistant Age: Kindergarten, 1st & 2nd graders Dates: Tuesdays, January 13 – February 10 (5 weeks) Time: 3:45 – 4:45p.m. Fee: $135+ $10 materials fee = $145 Minimum Enrollment: 6; Maximum Enrollment: 20 Every day in America we hear new pop or rock hits, but why stop at the US border? In this class students will join Mr. Stopyra for a musical tour around the world. During each class we will “visit” different countries such as China, France, or even Kenya, listening to music from each locale and learning about their culture. We will listen to songs, watch music videos and live cultural performances, and even have mini-dance parties as we learn new dances such as Bachata (Dominican) or the Lion and Dragon Dance (China). Fun arts and crafts are included as well, such as making instruments to take home or puppets for performance.

Take Mrs. Carlucci’s class and you will find out! Each week we will explore one element of designing and operating a real restaurant. We’ll discuss what KIND of Italian restaurant to open. What should it look like? What kind of food should be serve? What will the menu look like? What will the uniforms for the servers be? Most important of all--- What will our food be? In this hands-on class we will be learning all of the above and in our final class we will have REAL customers that will eat our food and see what great cooks and servers we are! You will learn the restaurant business from the “inside” and leave with secret Carlucci family recipes. Come join the fun and eat some amazing food along the way! Come join the first ever Greek language class offered at a very basic introductory level, teaching the foundations of the Greek language including the alphabet, phonetic sounds used to form basic words and introductory conversational. Chords including A, E, D, C, G, F, Am, and Em will be introduced as well as several versatile and basic strums. Each student will need to provide her/his own acoustic guitar. Nylon strings are recommended. Practice between classes is essential.

At the start of each meeting, Mrs. Carlucci will read with club members from a selection of Caldecott honored picture books. A short discussion on characters, theme, art medium and color are some of the areas that might be discussed. A craft project and special snack that ties in with the book will complete the book club experience. Mrs. Carlucci has been involved in a Mother/ Daughter Book Club with her own daughters since 1996. Her book club was even featured in the New York Times Magazine! She is passionate about children’s books and is excited to share that enthusiasm with your child!

She established the Boulanger ensemble, which is dedicated to performing a lecture/recital of the lives and music of Lili and Nadia Boulanger. Ms. Witos has taught for many years in Chicago and on the North Shore. She is on the faculty of the Music Institute of Chicago, has been a faculty member at the DePaul University Community Music School, and has taught in London, England. She has written articles for Keyboard Companion magazine and frequently serves as an adjudicator for contests in the Chicago area. A mandatory Parent Orientation for all students new to SHS after school piano program..The Suzuki method is by far the 19most effective approach for nurturing and developing the musical ability of a child from a very young age. Based on Suzuki's "mother language" philosophy, very young children learn to play the piano through their senses after listening to recordings and observing how other children learn. A cooperative relationship between teacher, parent and student is essential for a successful learning process. A parent is expected to be present at the child's lesson and receive training as a practice partner to the child.

Students will learn and hone their acting skills through improv games and character creation exercises. Afterwards, they will spend time learning about the rehearsal process. Beginners learn the fundamentals of the game. Experienced players learn essential strategies and tactics necessary for successful, winning chess. Our instructor, Grand Master Vladimir Georgiev, has years of experience teaching scholastic chess to beginners, intermediates, and experts. He has coached a Woman World Champion Antoaneta Stefanova, and currently coaches a number of students who qualify for the Youth World Chess Championship. He uses an entertaining and challenging question and answer format to encourage children to participate and form their own ideas. Club members will also have memberships to an online chess school, filled with lessons, puzzles, and chess games.

A mandatory Parent Orientation for all students new to SHS after school piano program..The Suzuki method is by far the 19most effective approach for nurturing and developing the musical ability of a child from a very young age. Based on Suzuki's "mother language" philosophy, very young children learn to play the piano through their senses after listening to recordings and observing how other children learn. A cooperative relationship between teacher, parent and student is essential for a successful learning process. A parent is expected to be present at the child's lesson and receive training as a practice partner to the child.
