Dear Sacred Heart families and friends, Welcome to the 7th annual celebration of L’Esprit de Sacré Coeur. As we gather tonight we celebrate the spirit of our community and our mission. The spirit of Sacred Heart is never adequately defined in words; rather it is experienced in the moments of our shared relationships. Tonight we gather in celebration of those relationships, united in the mission of Saint Madeleine Sophie and hand-in-hand with the Religious of the Sacred Heart who have nurtured us for the last two centuries. Thank you to our co-chairs, Michaela D’Arrigo, Cynthia Patti, and Monica Martinson, as well as to all the other volunteers who have worked so hard to make our event successful. The spirit of Sacred Heart is in essence an experience of learning and growing in the context of a loving community. The wisdom contained in the Goals and Criteria guides our community and sustains our mission. Each year we focus on one particular Goal to explore the depth of its value. This year, we focus on Goal V. Schools of the Sacred Heart educate to personal growth in an atmosphere of wise freedom. Tonight as we gather, we are privileged to honor a woman whose life is an expression of Goal 5 and of the values it reflects. A Sacred Heart graduate herself, Helen Bruns Ryan has worked continuously for the mission of Sacred Heart. Her life and her work continue to provide an “atmosphere” where students of the Sacred Heart are given the opportunity to learn, grow and experience the love of a nourishing community. On behalf of our entire community, congratulations to Mrs. Helen Ryan! Here’s a toast to L’Esprit de Sacré Coeur 2010--celebrating our Goals, our mission, and our relationships--- the spirit of Sacred Heart! Sincerely,

Nat Wilburn Head of Schools

Helen Bruns Ryan

2010 Recipient of the Sacred Heart Schools Goal Award Sacred Heart Schools is honored to present its 7th Goal Award to Helen Bruns Ryan, who, through her lifelong dedication to improving educational opportunities for young women, has demonstrated her commitment to Goal Five of Sacred Heart education: personal growth in an atmosphere of wise freedom. Mrs. Ryan is an alumna of the Convent of the Sacred Heart in Lake Forest, now Woodlands Academy, an Associate of the Society of the Sacred Heart, serves on the board of Woodlands Academy, is a founding board member of the Woodlands Academy Alumnae Association, and is a recipient of the National Association of the Sacred Heart’s Cor Unum Award, which is presented to Sacred Heart alumnae who embrace the philosophy of Sacred Heart in their daily lives. Mrs. Ryan also has two granddaughters currently attending The Academy of the Sacred Heart. Nowhere is Mrs. Ryan’s exemplification of Goal Five more clearly demonstrated than through her support of Josephinum Academy. For the past twenty-five years, Mrs. Ryan has worked to transform Josephinum, located on the near north side of Chicago, overseeing its evolution into an associate of the Network of Sacred Heart Schools that offers the opportunity for a quality, Catholic, college-preparatory experience to ambitious young women, regardless of their ethnicity, religion, or socioeconomic status. In 1993, Josephinum established the Helen Bruns Ryan Award, which is presented annually to a student demonstrating outstanding commitment and service to the school. Mrs. Ryan currently serves as Vice Chair Emerita of the Josephinum Board of Trustees. In January, Mrs. Ryan met with Sacred Heart students in the primary, lower and middle school during their chapel services, guiding a discussion on what Goal 5 means to them. These lively conversations provided a wonderful opportunity for children at all grade levels to explore a variety of ways that they can make wise choices at Sacred Heart Schools and beyond.

Acknowledgements from the Co-Chairs We look forward to gathering with you for the 7th Annual L’Esprit de Sacré Coeur, honoring Helen Bruns Ryan for her lifelong dedication to improving the lives of young women in Chicago. It has been our honor to coordinate this year’s event and we look forward to a joyous and successful evening for Sacred Heart Schools. L’Esprit planning began several months ago with the help of an outstanding committee of volunteers. We wish to express our sincere gratitude to each and every member of the committee--this moment would not be a reality without your assistance. We extend special thanks to Julie Ehrlich and Tracy Karlos for undertaking the enormous responsibility of overseeing the Auction. Their creativity, hard work and wicked senses of humor will be apparent to us all at the event! In November, our first stand-alone wine auction, L’Esprit du Vin, was held as a kick off to L’Esprit. In addition to the fabulous wines offered, our 400 guests enjoyed outstanding food and community camaraderie in our beautifully transformed Campbell Gymnasium. This party was made possible by the volunteer efforts and creativity of many people. We thank you all. And, of course, we cannot even begin to thank Kathy Fivelson and Sophie Streeter in our Advancement Office. Their calming presence, vast institutional knowledge and willingness to help with jobs big and small have made our job a pleasure. We all know how much we depend on them. It is a humbling experience to work with the extremely generous Sacred Heart community of faculty, staff, parents and friends of the School who donate their time, talent and resources. We all deserve to toast each other at L’Esprit de Sacré Coeur 2010! Michaela D’Arrigo, Monica Martinson, and Cynthia Patti Event Co-Chairs

Greetings to All: L’Esprit is upon us, and this wonderful event means so many things to the Sacred Heart Schools community. L’Esprit provides us with a chance to see old friends and make new ones...a chance to enjoy a nice meal and a great party...and an opportunity to celebrate the mission and spirit of a Sacred Heart education. It is also an extremely important and vital fundraising event for Sacred Heart Schools. There are so many important components to L’Esprit and your support is necessary and greatly appreciated. I also want you to strongly consider “raising your paddle” in support of this year’s Fund a Need item -- a new Lower School Science Lab!!! Fund a Need is an exciting program because it allows parents and friends of the school the ability to practice targeted giving to achieve immediately visible and tangible results. Improving science education is and should be a national interest, and parents at Sacred Heart Schools have felt strongly about science education for many years. We all now have the opportunity to see our contributions directly leading to new science facilities for the Lower School. These improvements will enable our Lower School teachers to provide the students with the building blocks for a solid education in the sciences and a necessary bridge to excelling in the Middle School and beyond! Lisa Tiemann and Christy Kyhl and their Fund a Need committee have done an excellent job of identifying this need and working with the school to organize this effort. So what can we do now? Raise our paddles after the Live Auction and make a pledge! My paddle will be up and I hope you will join me in supporting this exciting project! Have a wonderful night at L’Esprit and make sure to thank all of the hard-working volunteers who make this special night possible! Tim O’Neil

Chairman, Board of Trustees

Fund-A-Need Paddle Raise We are delighted to announce that as a part of L’Esprit we will be raising money to build a dedicated science lab for the Lower School. Our goal is to raise $30,000 on the night of the auction.

Your gift during the Paddle Raise will make new science facilities and equipment an immediate and exciting reality! Having this new science lab will continue to prepare our students for advanced scientific study in middle school, high school and beyond. With your donation, Sacred Heart will purchase specially designed science lab tables, a smart board, projectors, microscopes, computers, balances, measuring scales and other vital equipment.

How will it work? The Fund-a-Need Paddle Raise will be conducted immediately following the Live Auction. Simply raise your paddle in support of the lab as the auctioneer announces the funding level at which you wish to give. Funding levels will be announced at the $2,500, $1,000, $500, $250 and $100 level. Please direct specific questions to Co-Chairs Christy Kyhl Christy@kyhlfamily.com or Lisa Tiemann ltie3346@aol.com

Live Auction Cooperstown Donated by Mr. and Mrs. John J. Ahearne and Mr. & Mrs. Peter M. & Jacqueline M. Grahn

Value Priceless

Attention, all baseball fans! If you ever saw him play, you will be thrilled to watch Andre "The Hawk" Dawson inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, New York. The village of Cooperstown comes alive on Induction Weekend ( July 23-26, 2010 ) with Members of the Hall of Fame walking along Main Street signing autographs and visiting with fans. You and your guests will stay in a historic guest house just steps from the induction ceremony and an easy walk to the Hall of Fame and Museum. Your guest house apartment features two trundle beds, a pullout sofa and a single bed. In addition to the induction ceremony this weekend package includes passes to the Hall of Fame and Museum, commemorative souvenir programs and baseball caps for the event, and 50,000 American Airlines Frequent Flyer miles. "He's probably my favorite teammate ever for a lot of reasons, but mainly because he played the game right." This a quote by Ryne Sandberg on Andre Dawson. Boy did he ever play it right! He could hit for power (438 HR), for average, steal bases (314SB), field (.983 fielding percentage and 8 Gold Gloves) and an arm that threw a ball with accuracy and like a rocket! He is one of only four players in history to achieve 400 HR and 300 SB. Whether its Cubs or Sox in your house, we can all agree this is a once in a lifetime, not to be missed, opportunity for any baseball fan!!!

Mystery Dinner with the Administration Donated by Sacred Heart Schools Administration, Faculty & Staff and Sacred Heart Schools Academy 8 and Hardey 8 Is it tater tot casserole or turkey hash? No, not that kind of mystery dinner! We are talking about murder, theft, missing teachers and computer tampering all at our own Sacred Heart Schools. Why is there a bloody knitting needle under the piano in the chapel? Is that really red paint on the art room walls and where is Ms. Becker? Security saw Sister Maxwell walking the halls late last night. It was at that very moment Mr. Wilburn was on the phone with her discussing the computer breach that had cancelled school twice last month. On Monday morning, a body was found on the playground. One hand clutched the monkey bars while the other held a note badly faded from the weekend rain. The only certainty for this evening is that you will have rollicking good fun. The winning bidder and eleven friends will join the school administrators for cocktails and dinner in the Multi-Purpose Room and Rooftop Playground. Costumes and disguises are a must as you wander the innards of our school to investigate whodonit, with what, where and why. Date to be mutually agreed upon. Specific details about the Mystery will be provided to the winning bidder after L'Esprit.

Cornwall England Vacation Home Donated by Mr. & Mrs. Paul & Mimi Harris and Sacred Heart Schools Academy 3 This is the way to see England. Your first stop is a short respite in the beautiful London suburb of Richmond. Your home for two nights is the lovely coach house on an English estate with views of the famous Kew Gardens from your window. Once you have recovered from jet lag and visited Kew Gardens for an up close view and ventured into London for some fun, it is off to the historic coastal town of Charlestown, Cornwall in the Southwest of England. Charlestown is much as it was in the 1700's when it was founded for the clay in the ground to use in china and for its beautiful natural harbor. While looking at the tall ships that still dot the harbor one can almost hear the clash of the pirates swords or the firing of the cannons. Yes, that's right, pirates sailed these waters, and you can learn about them in the maritime museums in town and nearby. While in Charlestown you will be staying in The White House just steps from the historic harbor. It is an 1800's Georgian home that has been meticulously and respectfully renovated. You will find all the modern amenities, including heated slate floor, but still feel that you have stepped back into another era. The home is light, airy and family friendly, with a game room, and clean uncluttered decor and room for ten to twelve people. Views of the harbor and the garden can be seen from all the windows. In the garden the children will enjoy climbing the timber ""ship"" while you revel at the splendor of the lovely English garden. If you can tear yourself away from this bucolic spot, you will find plenty to do and see in town and nearby. There is the Eden Project with the world's largest biodome, Tintagel, the legendary birthplace of King Arthur, the Shipwreck and Heritage Center, the beach for swimming and playing, cliffs, hiking, pubs, shopping and much more. A short bike ride will take you to the famous, well in England anyway, Rick Stein's restaurant for some Fish and Chips. Whether you want to sit and relax or spend the day exploring Cornwall, this home is perfect for your next vacation. This package includes; a two night stay in suburban London coach house (sleeps six), a seven night stay in Charlestown, Cornwall home (sleeps twelve), two family passes to the Eden Project (4 adults and 6 children), two tickets to Kew Gardens (children are free), a gift certificate to Rick Stein's restaurant and roundtrip limousine service to and from O'Hare. Expires: February 20, 2011. Excludes: July and August. Home is available from Friday to Friday. Date to be mutually agreed upon and is subject to availability. Please reserve your date as soon as possible.

Announce Conge! Donated by Sacred Heart Schools If you were to ask any Sacred Heart student what is the best day at school they would say, "CONGE!". Well, the winner bidder can make that day even better for their child. The child of the winning bidder will announce the next Conge. Can you imagine their excitement when they are asked to come to the office and announce over the school loudspeaker, " Good morning Sacred Heart students and staff, today is CONGE!" McColgan and Metropolitan Limousine Inc The most difficult decision for this vacation is whether to enjoy it in the winter or in the summer. In the winter, you will love the ease of this ski in / ski out location with three lifts within 100 yards of your door. That's skiing on 5,512 acres and 4,350 vertical feet of terrain.
