All After School classes must be paid for by January 8, 2014. The amount of financial aid awarded for one (1) specialized after school class will be based on the percentage of aid a student receives for tuition, available aid, and the demand for classes.

Payment Policies

Sacred Heart is open after school for all sorts of fun, academic and personal enrichment. Check out the Student Life section of the School website for information about instrumental music and voice lessons, sports clinics and team practices, which are also being held after school.

Payment by credit card will be accepted. Upon receipt of payment, a confirmation of your registration will be emailed to you.

Scheduling 

Enrollment & Registration 

Registration is now open and closes at midnight January 8. First time users will need to setup an account. Payment must be made at time of registration in order to reserve space in the class. (The one exception would be for anyone requesting financial aid -- see note below)

Classes run January 13 - February 21. After School Classes do not meet on days that school is not in session (1/20, 2/14, 2/17). Please check individual class descriptions for the schedule of start and end dates for each class.

Cancellations & Refunds 

Classes will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis.

You will receive an automated confirmation of registered classes.

We will contact you only if a class is cancelled due to low enrollment.

NOTE: If you received financial aid toward tuition for the 2013-2014 school year, you are eligible to apply for financial aid for one (1) specialized after school class. The deadline to apply for this financial aid is January 6, 2014. To apply for financial aid; you must register for the class first. During the online registration process, choose the desired class and check the box indicated to apply for Specialized After School Program Financial Aid. The box must be checked in order to apply. On the check out page please select “Pay the minimum amount due”. You will be registered for the class and will hear back from the financial aid committee by January 7.

Classes may be cancelled if they do not meet minimum enrollment. If a class is cancelled by the After School Office, you will be notified by email and issued a refund. You will not receive a refund if your child is absent or stops attending a class.

Core After School Program – Stay until 6:00 p.m.   

After School Classes are offered in addition to the Core After school Program. Your child/children is/are welcome to stay at school after their class in the Core After School Program. Pickup must take place by 6:00 p.m. through the Portry. If your child’s class does not start until after 4:00 they will stay in the Core Program until their class meets. A healthy snack will be provided to every child participating in an After School Class. The cost of the snack is included in the class fee.


Dismissal/Pick Up   

Children enrolled in After School Classes will report to the Core After School Program at dismissal. Their After School Class teacher will pick them up when it is time for class. Children will be dismissed by After School staff at the Rosemont door at the class-end time indicated on the schedule. Students whose parents do not pick them up within 10 minutes of class end-time will join the Core Program and must then be picked up through the Portry.

Behavior Policy Sacred Heart Schools recognize the development of character as a fundamental goal in education. Discipline at the Schools is rooted in the values inherent in the Goals and Criteria. All students who attend After School are required to abide by all the rules, policies and procedures that are outlined in the current Parent-Student Handbook. The discipline policy of the Schools will be reinforced and deemed appropriate, including, when necessary, suspension and expulsion from the After School program.

Students will delight in making clay animals, pottery, jewelry, and more. So much is possible working with this non-toxic clay that comes in a wide variety of colors and bakes to a hard form. Techniques and instruction using several different approaches towards manipulating this medium will expand any child’s creativity.

Indoor Activities Brownie Girl Scouts Scout Leader: Keya Graves, SHS Admissions Associate Age: 2nd grade girls Dates: Wednesdays, starting February 5th Time: 3:45 – 4:45 p.m. Minimum Enrollment: 5; Maximum Enrollment: 20 Students will learn the values of being a Brownie Girl Scout through bi-weekly meetings. We will explore the Girl Scout Law through activities, names, and crafts. Girl Scouts helps girls to become caring members of their community while creating lasting friendships with their troop members. Membership dues will be discussed at initial meeting.

In a world of sensory overload, school, family, and internal pressures, kids need meditation just as much as adults! Meditation has been proven to increase executive functioning in working memory and attention and is beginning to be introduced into school curriculums worldwide! This class will teach the basic fundamentals of meditation to kids in exciting ways. We will practice chocolate meditation, sounds meditation, pebble-breathing meditation, and more while helping kids reduce stress and improve their executive functions!

Do you love to watch movies? Then this club is for you! For six weeks we will discuss Holes by Louis Sacher, Misty of Chincoteague by Marguerite Henry and Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH by Robert C. O’Brien. Included in the meeting will be a craft or a fun activity and a snack that has relevance to the books. The following week you will get a chance to watch the movie of the books. We will compare the books to the movie. Was it better? Was it different? What was left out of the movie? Why do you think that was? You get the idea! What would a movie be without popcorn? Your child will need his or her own copy of the books.

Based on Suzuki's "mother language" philosophy, very young children learn to play the piano through their senses after listening to recordings and observing how other children learn. A cooperative relationship between teacher, parent and student is essential for a successful learning process. A parent is expected to be present at the child's lesson and receive training as a practice partner to the child. As a result, Suzuki parents and children are often known to build strong parent-child bonds which would be treasured for a lifetime.

You will create a beautiful panting of your choice that you and your family will enjoy for many years.

Create-A-Play Teacher: Staff from L’il Buds Theatre Company Age: 2nd, 3rd, 4th graders Dates: Fridays, January 17 - February 21 (5 weeks) (No Class on 2/14) Time: 2:45 –3:45 p.m. Fee: $130 Minimum Enrollment: 5; Maximum Enrollment: 20 Come be a part of Sacred Heart’s first student improvisation group. Students will create original sketch comedy pieces using the art of improvisation. Based on Suzuki's "mother language" philosophy, very young children learn to play the piano through their senses after listening to recordings and observing how other children learn. A cooperative relationship between teacher, parent and student is essential for a successful learning process. A parent is expected to be present at the child's lesson and receive training as a practice partner to the child. As a result, Suzuki parents and children are often known to build strong parent-child bonds which would be treasured for a lifetime.

Sacred Heart Chess Teacher: Zack Fishman, Founder of Chess Education Partners Age: 1st - 6th Grades Dates: Fridays, January 17 - April 11 (10 weeks) (No class held on 2/14, 3/21, 3/28) Time: 2:45 – 3:45 p.m. Fee: $260 Minimum Enrollment: 10; Maximum Enrollment: 20 Learn the rules and strategies of chess from the popular and entertaining chess coach Zack Fishman. Mr. Fishman uses stories, puzzles and a large dose of chess playing to gently guide our club members through the complexities of the world’s most popular game. All students, beginners to experts, are welcome and become part of the Sacred Heart Chess Team which will have the opportunity to play in monthly tournaments. Taekwondo Teacher: Blair Sarkiss, 4th Degree Black Belt, Owner and Lead Instructor, HMD Academy Age: 1st - 6th Grades (Ages 7 and up) Dates: Fridays, January 17 - April 11 (10 weeks) (No class held on 2/14, 3/21, 3/28) Time: 2:45 – 3:45 p.m. Fee: $260 + $35 uniform fee = $295 Minimum Enrollment: 7; Maximum Enrollment: 20 This will be the seventh year that Tae Kwon Do at Sacred Heart will be offered through H.M.D. Academy Chicago. The curriculum focuses on personal achievement without competition, and importance is placed on students’ effort not their ability. In addition to learning the physical skills of Tae Kwon Do, students will learn martial arts etiquette, rules, and regulations (discipline), Korean terminology, and visualization. Classroom achievements, both physically and mentally, help students form a positive self-image (self-esteem) while training in a structured and positive atmosphere, devoid of the fear of losing, allows the development of assertiveness, not aggression. Students will be eligible to promote to the rank of Yellow Belt with the completion of an essay entitled ‘What is your motivation to study Tae Kwon Do?
