Sacred Heart Schools Winter 2011 Session II After School Classes Sacred Heart is open after school for all sorts of fun, and academic and personal enrichment. Registration forms are available on the School website and should be sent in as soon as possible to guarantee a class space. Check out the Student Life section of the School website for information about instrumental music and voice lessons, sports clinics and team practices, which are also being held after school. Enrollment & Registration Return Registration forms and fees (checks payable to Sacred Heart Schools) to After School Class Registration no later than 12:00 Noon Thursday, February 24th . Payment by check or cash must be received for the registration to be complete and space reserved in the class. Classes will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis. To ensure fairness, registrations will be dated and numbered when received in the After School Office. Scholarships are available for all classes. Please contact Brenda Asare for information at 773-262-4446 ext.542. Consider yourself registered for a class unless you hear otherwise from the After School Office. No confirmation is sent home. We will contact you only if a class is cancelled because of low enrollment. Scheduling Classes begin the week of February 28 – April 15 Registrations will be due Thursday, February 24th . After School Classes do not meet on days that school is not in session (3/28 ) Please check individual class descriptions for the schedule of start and end dates for each class .
Cancellations & Refunds Classes may be cancelled if they do not meet minimum enrollment If a class is cancelled by the After School Office, you will be notified by email or phone and receive a refund. You will not receive a refund if your child is absent or stops attending a class. Core After School Program – Stay until 6:00 p.m. After School Classes are offered in addition to the Core After School Program. Your child/children are welcome to stay at school after their class in the Core After School Program. Pickup must take place by 6:00 p.m. through the Portry. If your child’s class does not start until after 4:00 they will stay in the Core Program until their class meets. For more information about the Core After School Program, contact Christy Crandall at Christy.Crandall@shschicago.org Dismissal/Pick Up Children enrolled in After School Classes will report to the Core After School Program at dismissal. Their After School Class teacher will pick them up there at the start time for their class. Children will be dismissed by After School staff at the Rosemont door at the class-end time indicated on the schedule. Students whose parents do not pick them up within 10 minutes of class end-time will join the Core Program and must then be picked up through the Portry. Snacks A healthy snack will be provided to every child participating in an After School Class. The cost of the snack is included in the Class fee.

Students will sing along to their favorite songs by Taylor Swift, Selena Gomez, Miley Cyrus, Justin Bieber, The Jonas Brothers, and many more. Students can bring in their own music as long as it's appropriate for school. Students will practice their karaoke song and routine in preparation for their final performance on the last day of class. Parents and siblings are welcome to the final performance. And while you’re waiting for your turn to Karaoke your ―Sacred Heart‖ out, join Ms. Henderson for some jewelry making and rotocoptor building fun. You haven’t heard of a rotocoptor? It’s like a paper airplane, only much, much cooler! Make as much jewelry and as many rotocoptors as you like! You’ll even get to test them out!

We will be using children’s literature as a basis for dramatic creations. Students will hone basic acting and theatre skills such as vocal production and character creation.

This class is just for girls….creating crafts, jewelry making, dancing, singing, and participating in fun games that only girls will love! Activities are theme-based which will differ weekly. Get ready to have some FUN!

The goal of this class is to teach students about break dancing. Students will learn how to break dance, as well as the history, the (clean) music, and how break dancing fits into the hip hop culture. A range of different dance styles and techniques will be taught. During class students will practice the different styles and techniques with the goal of having students in the final class participate in a dance battle.

In this class Students will create seasonal keepsakes that the family can enjoy for years to come. These keepsakes will require unlimited imagination along with the love of the arts. Each student will experience the joy of giving and enjoy a sense of accomplishment with each completed project. Rita Norkiewicz will be the class instructor for the Mini Martha Club. She works in SHS School Office and is a self taught jewelry maker and crafter.

At the start of each meeting, Mrs. Carlucci will read with club members from a selection of Caldecott picture books. A short discussion will follow touching on literary and artistic elements found in the book. Characters, theme, art medium and color are some of the areas that might be discussed. A craft project that ties in with the book will complete the book club experience. Mrs. Carlucci has been involved in a Mother/ Daughter Book Club with her own daughters since 1996. Her book club was even featured in the New York Times Magazine! She is passionate about children’s books and is excited to share that enthusiasm with your child!

Along the way, your child will learn kitchen safety, good manners and recipe reading. We will be cooking and tasting different types of cuisine. Each week your Little Chefs will learn how to make a new recipe. Some of the recipes will include: grasshopper bars, enchiladas, and blueberry muffins. By the end of the class, your child will have a set of measuring spoons, a book full of recipes, and many of the valuable skills they will need to be an expert helper/chef in your kitchen at home!

Join Professor Regulus Reed for afternoons at Hogwarts on Sheridan Road. We will split our time between actual Hogwarts academics and read-alouds of excerpts from Book One of the Harry Potter series – Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone. We will work in the following Hogwarts subjects: Charms Defense Against the Dark Arts / Dueling History of Magic Potions, Ancient Runes ,Divination, and Muggle Studies The class is open to Muggles, witches, and wizards in grades 2-4. A copy of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone and enthusiasm are required. Cloaks, quills, and wands are optional but encouraged.
