Sacred Heart Schools Winter 2012 Session I After School Classes Sacred Heart is open after school for all sorts of fun, and academic and personal enrichment. Registration forms are available on the School website and should be sent in as soon as possible to guarantee a class space. Check out the Student Life section of the School website for information about instrumental music and voice lessons, sports clinics and team practices, which are also being held after school. Enrollment & Registration  Return Registration forms and fees (checks payable to Sacred Heart Schools) to After School Class Registration no later than 12:00 Noon Thursday, January 12 th.  If requesting financial aid you MUST submit registration form by Tuesday, January 10th (without payment). You will be contacted regarding the awarded scholarship amount and to confirm registration  Payment by check or cash must be received for the registration to be complete and space reserved in the class.  Classes will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis.  To ensure fairness, registrations will be dated and numbered when received in the After School Office.  Financial aid is available for all classes. Please contact Brenda Asare for information at 773-262-4446 ext.542.  Consider yourself registered for a class unless you hear otherwise from the After School Office. No confirmation is sent home. We will contact you only if a class is cancelled because of low enrollment. Scheduling  Classes begin the week of January 17th  There are two class sessions during Winter 2012. Some classes span Session I and II and run for 9, 10 or 11 weeks. o Session I: January 17 – February 24 o Session II: February 27 – April 2  Winter Session II class booklet will be available in February and will include new classes. Registrations will be due Tuesday, February 21st (with financial aid requests) or Thursday, February 23rd (without financial aid requests).

After School Classes do not meet on days that school is not in session (2/17 or 2/20) Please check individual class descriptions for the schedule of start and end dates for each class . Cancellations & Refunds  Classes may be cancelled if they do not meet minimum enrollment.  If a class is cancelled by the After School Office, you will be notified by email or phone and receive a refund.  You will not receive a refund if your child is absent or stops attending a class. Core After School Program – Stay until 6:00 p.m.  After School Classes are offered in addition to the Core After School Program.  Your child/children are welcome to stay at school after their class in the Core After School Program. Pickup must take place by 6:00 p.m. through the Portry.  If your child’s class does not start until after 4:00 they will stay in the Core Program until their class meets.  For more information about the Core After School Program, contact Christy Crandall at Christy.Crandall@shschicago.org Dismissal/Pick Up  Children enrolled in After School Classes will report to the Core After School Program at dismissal. Their After School Class teacher will pick them up there at the start time for their class.  Children will be dismissed by After School staff at the Rosemont door at the class-end time indicated on the schedule.  Students whose parents do not pick them up within 10 minutes of class end-time will join the Core Program and must then be picked up through the Portry. Snacks  A healthy snack will be provided to every child participating in an After School Class. The cost of the snack is included in the Class fee.

Monday Classes

Mad Science Teachers: Staff from Mad Science of Chicago (www.madscience.org/chicago) Age: K, 1 st & 2 nd graders Dates: Mondays, January 23 - April 2 (9 weeks) Time: 3:45 – 4:45 p.m. Fee: $214 Minimum Enrollment: 12; Maximum Enrollment: 20 Children will get to know their taste buds better and witness a hair raising demonstration of static electricity and much, much more! New activities are incorporated throughout this recently revised program!

Circus! with CircEsteem Teacher: CircEsteem Staff Age: 1st , 2 nd & 3 rd graders Dates: Mondays, January 23 –April 2 (9 weeks) Time: 4:00 -5:00 p.m. (No class held on 2/20 and 3/19) Fees: $214 (optional fee for purchase of a $30 clown-in-a-bag kit, so the students can continue practicing at home. It is not mandatory so the cost does not need to be added to the original enrollment fee. Cost with bag is $244) Minimum Enrollment: 6; Maximum: 15 In CircEsteem’s Circus class, students will learn the basics of a variety of circus skills including: juggling, plate spinning, tight wire, rolling globe, partner acrobatics, and human pyramids. Students have the freedom to develop skills at their own pace and will build self-esteem and confidence while also having fun. Parents and the school community will be invited to a final performance put on by the students at the end of the session.

Spanish for Children Teachers: Staff from Estrellitas (www.estrellitas.biz) Age: K – 5 th graders Dates: Mondays & Wednesdays, January 18 - February 22 (6 weeks) Please note that this class meets twice a week, which is important for language immersion. (No class on 2/20) Time: 3:45 – 5:00 p.m. Fees: $286 + $20 materials = $306 Minimum enrollment: 6; Maximum enrollment: 15 Expose your children to Spanish—the second language spoken in the U.S. and spoken by more than half a billion people throughout the world. Estrellitas offers a cultural immersion program that incorporates fun activities targeted to introduce Spanish language and culture to children. The teachers are native speakers whose approach emphasizes having fun while exposing the children to Hispanic traditions through art, activities, games, music, singing, dancing, and more. Mad Science-Secret Agent Lab Teachers: Staff from Mad Science of Chicago (www.madscience.org/chicago) Age: 3 rd, 4 th & 5th graders Dates: Mondays, January 23 - April 2 (9 weeks) Time: 3:45 – 4:45 p.m. Fee: $214 Minimum Enrollment: 12; Maximum Enrollment: 20 Junior Mad Scientists will harness heat energy, learn the science behind heat movement and explore the properties of both light and color. They will investigate the power of magnets, examine curious optical illusions, make their own periscope and analyze the amazing properties of food. New activities are incorporated throughout this recently revised program!

Beginning Acoustic Guitar Lessons with Jennifer Swillinger Students will enjoy learning and playing guitar and singing American folk, popular, and children’s songs. Chords including A, E, D, C, G, F, Am, and Em will be introduced as well as several versatile and basic strums. Each student will need to provide her/his own acoustic guitar. Nylon strings are preferred. Practice between classes is recommended. Sister-Arts Studio has joined Sacred Hearts' after school program to teach you the love of knitting! Fiber-artists will learn to knit a scarf with bamboo knitting needles and their choice of yarn. Knitters will learn to cast-on, knit, purl (optional), bind-off, weave in ends and finish their scarf with fringe.

Learning a foreign language increases critical thinking skills, creativity, and flexibility of mind. The young developing brain is perfectly suited for learning a second language. We will learn in a fun, interactive and enjoyable environment by discovering Mandarin through songs, arts and crafts, games, and dances. In addition to learning daily conversations, we will celebrate holidays and discover the rich culture of foreign languages. New to Mandarin? Our curriculum incorporates new themes every two weeks thereby allowing beginning students and more advanced students to interact in the same class. We will be using children’s literature as a basis for dramatic creations. Students will hone basic acting and theatre skills such as vocal production and character creation.

An Introduction to Journalism Teachers: Mr. Bob Spoerl, graduate of Medill School of Journalism Age: 6 th, 7th & 8th graders Dates: Tuesdays, January 17 - March 27 (11 weeks) Time: 4:00-5:00 p.m. Fees: $262 + $15 materials fee = $277 Minimum Enrollment: 8; Maximum Enrollment: 15 This 11-week course will teach students the basic concepts of reporting and running their own blog. Aside from providing students some background on general reporting techniques (asking questions, reporting fairly and being respectful of people), the class will also simulate a newsroom. A graduate of the Medill School of Journalism at Northwestern University teaches this once-a-week class. You might remember him from Sacred Heart’s Track and Field coaching staff. Coach Bob is now Mr. Bob. Let’s work together and learn how to tell captivating stories about your school and community. This course is only for students willing to learn and try their best.

Private Voice Lessons Julie O'Connell has been offering voice lessons at Sacred Heart Schools for the past four years. After receiving her Bachelor of Music in Jazz Studies with a Vocal Performance Concentration in May 2005 from the University of North Texas, Julie stayed in the area to be a freelance jazz musician, and to teach private and group voice lessons. While on a vocal jazz scholarship at UNT, she sang with the world-renowned One O'Clock Jazz Band and the UNT Jazz Singers. In the private lessons, students do warm ups, sight singing, breathing technique and sing solo pieces from great books for kids of all ages. Her students in the past have performed at a fall recital and at Gallery Night wowing the audience with their vocal talents! My First Book Club Teacher: Arlene Carlucci, SHS Substitute Teacher Age: Kindergarten Dates: Wednesdays, January 18 - February 22 (6 weeks) Time: 3:45 – 4:45 p.m. Fees: $143 + $15 activity and supply fee = $158 Minimum Enrollment: 5; Maximum Enrollment: 20 Come and join your very first book club and the best part is --- you don’t even have to know how to read! Using Caldecott Award winning picture book, Mrs. Carlucci will take you on a new and exciting adventure each week. We will visit Japan when we read Grandfather Journey and New York City when we read The Man Who Walked Between the Towers. Each week we will discuss the broad concepts of a book club like setting, character and conflict and resolution. We will make a craft or have an activity that enhances the understanding of the book. A special snack might even appear if it goes along with the book as well! Mrs. Carlucci has been involved in a Mother/ Daughter Book Club with her own daughters since 1996. Her book club was even featured in the New York Times Magazine! She is passionate about children’s books and is excited to share that enthusiasm with your child.

Along the way, your child will learn kitchen safety, good manners and recipe reading. We will be cooking and tasting different types of cuisine. Each week your Little Chefs will learn how to make a new recipe. Some of the recipes will include: Spaghetti Hot Dogs, Mini Taco Bowls, Cheesy Pull Apart Calzone and Mini Oreo Surprise Cupcakes. By the end of the class, your child will have their own Silicone spatula, a book full of recipes, and many of the valuable skills they will need to be an expert helper/chef in your kitchen at home.

In the past, students have studied Astronomy, Defense Against the Dark Arts, Muggle Studies, and Potions – among others. We will often close our sessions by reading an excerpt from Book Four of the Harry Potter series – Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. A copy of Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire and enthusiasm are required. Cloaks, quills, and wands are optional but strongly encouraged.

Science, Art, and Math Mix (SAMM) Teacher: Jennifer Swillinger, Library and Science Lab Assistant Age: 3rd , 4 th & 5 th graders Dates: Wednesdays, January 18 - February 22 (6 weeks) Time: 4:00 -5:30 p.m. Fees: $ 143 + $25 materials fee = $168 Minimum Enrollment: 5; Maximum Enrollment:8 Design, build, construct, mix, mold, grow, create, draw and assemble fantastic and amazing things using your science, math, and art skills! Crystals, pyramids, geodesic balls, castles, coil ceramics, masks, polymer clay, gigantic dinosaurs, marbleized paper, tie-dyed fabric, geometric bead weaving, use microscopes and live specimens for biological illustration and much more! (Approximately 3-4 activities per session, selected at the discretion of the teacher.)

Private Drum Lessons Sacred Heart Swim Club Teacher: Jamie Powers, Lower School PE & Health Teacher Age: 2 nd - 5th graders Dates: Wednesdays, January18 - February 22 (6 weeks) Time: 3:45 – 5:00 p.m. Fee: $143 + $10 Facility Fee = $153 Minimum Enrollment: 5; Maximum Enrollment: 15 Want to have fun with friends this Winter and improve your swimming skills? Join the Sacred Heart Swimmers! You’ll work on stroke technique, lap swimming, surface dives and have LOTS of water fun. Swimmers need to bring a SWIMSUIT, TOWEL, AND GOGGLES TO EVERY CLASS. GIRLS NEED TO BRING A BATHING CAP. Pick up is at 5:00 at the Edgewater Athletic Club.

Sam Koentopp started offering private drum lessons at Sacred Heart in the winter of 2010. This fall we will again be lessons for beginning through advanced for students of all ages. Lessons will be individual one-on-one lessons. Students will be expected to have at the very least a pair of sticks and a practice pad, and after a couple of months of lessons parents will need to invest in a drum set for practicing. Students will be expected to practice at the very least 2 hours every week. Sam Koentopp has a 8 year history of private drum instruction working to build up a love of music and rhythm in children young and old. He teaches at the Baker Demonstration School in Evanston and as a private instructor. Lessons focus on learning simple and fun rock and roll rhythms. Drumming intensely stimulates the mind and body. It builds upon the fundamentals of basic math and reading while developing motor skills. What fun we will have exploring stories from the continent of Africa and Asia, the countries of Europe and right here in America! All meetings will have a discussion, a craft and a snack that has relevance to the story. Don’t miss this exciting journey.

Children rehearse weekly under the direction of our highly accredited vocal, dance and drama instructors. The final performance includes original costumes and set design. Each child who auditions will receive a part, a practice CD and a script for personal practice.

Guerilla Filmmaking Workshop Teachers: Rajesh Bhagirat, James Gustin, and Melissa Martens – Fig Media Age: 6th, 7 th, 8 th graders Dates: Thursdays, January 19 - March 29 (11 weeks) Times: 3:45-5:45 p.m. Fees: $524 + $30 materials fee = $554 Minimum Enrollment: 13 Maximum Enrollment: 20 In this workshop, the students will learn to develop skills in all aspects of the filmmaking process. Student will develop ideas and write for the screen, learn camera techniques, directing, producing, and acting. Private Voice Lessons Julie O'Connell has been offering voice lessons at Sacred Heart Schools for the past four years. After receiving her Bachelor of Music in Jazz Studies with a Vocal Performance Concentration in May 2005 from the University of North Texas, Julie stayed in the area to be a freelance jazz musician, and to teach private and group voice lessons. While on a vocal jazz scholarship at UNT, she sang with the world-renowned One O'Clock Jazz Band and the UNT Jazz Singers. In the private lessons, students do warm ups, sight singing, breathing technique and sing solo pieces from great books for kids of all ages. Her students in the past have performed at a fall recital and at Gallery Night wowing the audience with their vocal talents! Students will learn the fundamentals of cartooning by creating their own group of cartoon characters, building confidence with their fine motor skills through sketch, drawings and coloring.

Mr. Fishman uses stories, puzzles and a large dose of chess playing to gently guide our club members through the complexities of the world’s most popular game. All students, beginners to experts, are welcome and become part of the Sacred Heart Chess Team which will have the opportunity to play in several tournaments. Taekwondo Teacher: Blair Sarkiss, 4th Degree Black Belt, Owner and Lead Instructor, HMD Academy Age: 1st - 8 th graders (Ages 7 and up) Dates: Fridays, January 20 - March 30 (10 weeks) (No class held on 2/17) Time: 2:45 – 3:45 p.m. Fee: $238 + $35 uniform fee = $273 Minimum Enrollment: 7; Maximum Enrollment: 20 This will be the sixth year that Tae Kwon Do at Sacred Heart will be offered through H.M.D. Academy Chicago. The curriculum focuses on personal achievement without competition, and importance is placed on students’ effort not their ability. In addition to learning the physical skills of Tae Kwon Do, students will learn martial arts etiquette, rules, and regulations (discipline), Korean terminology, and visualization. Classroom achievements, both physically and mentally, help students form a positive self-image (self-esteem) while training in a structured and positive atmosphere, devoid of the fear of losing, allows the development of assertiveness, not aggression. Students will be eligible to promote to the rank of Yellow Belt with the completion of an essay entitled ‘What is your motivation to study Tae Kwon Do? What goals have you set for yourself? Beginning Acoustic Guitar Lessons with Jennifer Swillinger Students will enjoy learning and playing guitar and singing American folk, popular, and children’s songs. Chords including A, E, D, C, G, F, Am, and Em will be introduced as well as several versatile and basic strums. Each student will need to provide her/his own acoustic guitar. Nylon strings are preferred. Practice between classes is recommended.
