How To Train A Parrot

Parrots make wonderful pets. You will very quickly find that parrots are extremely clever and will learn very fast when you start to train them. But you must also remember that any animal that has such a high intelligence can also easily get very bored, so your role will be to train and spend the time it takes to make your parrot a wonderful pet. It will take time and patience to train your parrot, but with the correct training your parrot provide you with many years of friendship. The easiest way to train your pet is to follow a few steps. Whenever you are training it is best to remove your parrot from their cage and train them in a small quiet space. Your pet will be more likely to remain alert and remember the training if you place them in a new setting. The next thing to do is, to eliminate any distractions you may have in your home, for example turn the television/radio off so that he or she will not get distracted. Most parrots are like children, they have a short attention span, so keep the training sessions to lots of small sessions. It is also a good idea to arrange the training around your parrot's schedule and not yours. For example after they have had their food is usually a good time to train as your parrot will be content and should pay attention. Your parrot will also enjoy lots of praise, even if the training session was not very successful don't let your parrot know this by getting stressed. It will make a bad experience for your pet and you may find you have a harder time getting through to your pet the next time. When you are starting to teach your parrot a new trick, remember to give your pet lots of praise and encouragement, as all animals will respond better to praise than they will to punishment. Try not to punish your pet even if they are misbehaving, it is best to just ignore bad behavior while you are

training. Parrots do not recognize punishment or negative reinforcement, in fact if you do respond to their bad behavior, they may actually see this is a positive sign of your attention. Also try not to reward your parrot with food treats all the time, use plenty of praise instead because your parrot may start to only perform the tricks you want them to do if some kind of food reward to available. Repetition is the way to successfully train your parrot. Keep repeating the basic steps is the best way to get your parrot to perform the tricks. If you find your parrot is tired or not interested, then you must stop training and try again another day. As your parrot learns more tricks, they will start to feel more comfortable when performing in their cage and also around the hustle and bustle of your home. Parrots learn very quickly, and sometimes will pick up the wrong things, so be careful what you say around your pet, to avoid the embarrassment to you if they learn something inappropriate. As with most animals, training a parrot takes a lot of patience, you must love your pet and have lots of time and dedication to make this a worthwhile partnership, but with your patient training and love, you will be rewarded with a well-behaved pet that will give you years of company.
