What a way to start off the 2012 sale offering!
This pair blazed faced heifers will be the only purebreds to sell out of K18 this year. 202Z is your reigning Iowa State Fair Senior Calf Champion. She garnered her fair share of admirers in Des Moines and hasn’t had a bad day since. She is without a doubt, one of the most powerful heifers in the sale. Super stout, big bellied and cool looking with a wide blaze face. Here is truly an elite donor prospect in every aspect of the word. 202Z reminds us so much of her mother at this early age. There is no doubt in my mind that we should be keeping her to replace her mother. She is already a champion, but regardless if she ever steps back in a show ring, the income generating potential of this heifer as a headlining donor is as high as any heifer to sell this year. I believe that 203Z probably has the most potential as a show heifer of these sisters. She is very long and clean necked and nice shouldered and ties into a big belly with lots of shape and depth. She is also very square hipped and wide when viewed from behind and is also very loose made. Their mother has been one of our most potent producers and is as predictable as any cow in the breed. She is the dam of many high sellers and show champions across the country and her daughters out produce her as well. One daughter is Rhythm 418P, who is the dam of Excalibur and also the only cow in our donor pen who can rival her mother in terms of producing ability. Another daughter that was purchased by Rolling Hills in Arkansas, produced the Champion Simmental Heifer at the Tulsa State Fair as a calf and also sold for 5 figures. She also produced another heifer calf that commanded $20,000 recently. Now that’s giving a return on an investment! No matter which heifer you choose, you can’t go wrong with this pair of heifers. Offered with the K18 Group. 2012 IA State Fair Calf Champion

K18 really makes nice purebreds, but some days I wonder if her SimAngus aren’t better! Here is a trio of heifers that all have that great look that their dam stamps on all her calves. I can’t tell you which one is the best one, and depending on what you’re looking for, there is something for everybody. 204Z is really cocky and stout. Z218 may be the combination show heifer of the 3 as she is real sweet necked and has that show ring presence about her. Z295 is the big bellied, cow power female of the three but still has that look to stand out from the rest in the show ring. She also has a great disposition. All three are slightly different, but one thing is for sure, all three are full of quality. Offered with the K18 Group.

What a pair of SimAngus show heifers here. The Style bull really seems to click well with this cow family. These two are both high quality individuals that will be competitive on any level. 210Z is very flat necked and flat shouldered with a big belly and is very square out of her hip. She is big footed and good boned with awesome hair. She is the flatter made one of the two and looks like she will make a killer bred. 228Z will grab your attention when you walk in the pen, I will guarantee. I don’t care if this one was Hot Pink with Purple Polka dots, this one is flat good! She is ultra cool looking through her front, with a huge rib cage, and ends with a big stout hip and rump. I think she is one of the biggest boned Angus sired half bloods you will find and gets out and goes as good as you can ask for. Her hair quality is awesome and has a lot it. We are living in a time where it seems some color allows you to stand out from the pack so take advantage here. Remember, the reserve Foundation heifer at Junior Nationals had some color this year. If your looking for a competitive Foundation show heifer, make sure to look these two up. Offered with the K18 Group.

This Wide Open heifer is without a doubt, one of my favorite purebred heifers. This nice haired heifer is flat necked, flat shouldered, big bellied, square made, super sound, and has that cockiness about her that always grabs your attention. She has a very nice designed back leg that I think is so important to keep these purebred heifers sound when they are big breds. Her mother is a young donor in our program that is an In Dew Time out of Drake Rhythm, which makes her a maternal sister to our great K18 donor. We liked this heifer so much as a calf, we flushed her back that way and have a litter of them coming next spring. Make sure to check out this heifer, you will be glad you did.

Such is the case here. This is a mating combining the two most talked about bulls from the 2010 calf crop, Excalibur and Chamberlain. Z214 is a very complete, well balanced heifer that has that extra look to make her stand out from the crowd. She is super sound and stout while still having that big sweeping rib cage needed to make them competitive in the show ring. She will definitely make an awesome show heifer, but better yet, think of the mating possibilities when she is in your donor pen. Offered with Nelson Family Farms.

We expected big things from this mating, as we feel we have one of the most productive cows in the breed in 418P and flushed her to one of the most dominant bulls in the breed. I think this heifer delivered and has as much potential to be a big time show heifer as any in the sale. She is also one of the youngest, but that is something she will get over soon enough. One of the biggest footed and biggest boned heifers in the sale, she is extremely long necked and has more than enough rib shape for a heifer her age. We all like our show heifers to be hairy, but this one takes it to the next level because she has a ton of nice, soft, workable hair, even on her legs. She is bred to be a little later maturing, so believe me when I say her best days are ahead of her! Offered with Nelson Family Farms.

I realize these heifers are full sisters but they almost look more like clones than flush mates! I really don’t know which one I like better and I see them every day, they are that much alike. Both are very nice footed and big boned for being Angus sired. They are long, clean necked, big bellied, and are extremely sound and travel with ease. I know I can’t tell you which one I like best, but I can tell you if you are hunting a dominant Foundation heifer, make sure to check out these two heifers out of the great 418P donor. She had quietly been doing a good job for us when last year she had the best heifer calf we had until we lost her due to a twisted gut. Something tripped in my feeble brain that told me I needed to flush her after that and I am glad I did. This pair of Built Right heifers are prime examples of why he has been so popular. They are both sound at the ground, move extremely well, while being soft made and having a great look to them. Z231 was been a favorite to the early visitors and rightfully so. I think she has a ton of potential and will make a great bred heifer in the summer and the later fall shows. Z232 didn’t have the best recip and has always been a bit behind her sister, but I think in terms of true quality, she is every bit as good. She has really been pouring it on lately. I think this is definitely a pair of purebred heifers that will go on and be competitive where ever you take them.

I will cut to the chase and tell you that Z227 is a heifer that doesn’t come around every day. While at the Iowa State Fair, she was admired by many, and was one of the most talked about calves in the barn. I truly think she redefines the word unique, as I am not sure that you can find a heifer that is this stout, yet is this smooth shouldered, and still so sound on her back leg. Not to mention she is extremely long and flat necked, and very good in her flank. She is destined to be a dominant show heifer and then a breed leading donor. Z223 is put together much like her sister. She is goose necked, big footed, big barreled, and stout. No matter which one of these females you end up with, they are program changers. As I am writing these footnotes, I keep catching myself thinking we shouldn’t be selling her, and this is another one of those. This Dew It Right heifer is very complete. It is hard to poke a hole in her. She is very feminine and maternal in her design, which comes from the cow family behind her. Her dam and grandam are both impressive cows and our Powerbull from Denver this year also came from this cow family. Once again, we have a maternal sister in the keeper pen, or this one would not be for sale.
Selling 3 embryos with a guarantee of one pregnancy if implanted by certified embryologist. Embryos are full sibs to RS&T Roulette 4Z heifer, unique opportunity to invest is champion genetics.

BIG TIME COW POWER! That is the best way to describe this fancy heifer. She has been a standout since day one. I challenge you to find a heifer that is this stout, yet still is this soft, and this nice through her front end. She is also very sound and gets out and travels extremely well. Not to mention, her hair is as nice as one could want. Her maternal brother was the brockle faced bull that was part of our Reserve Percentage Pen of 3 bulls in Denver. This heifer would work in Purebred and Club Calf operations both. How many times have you seen “Sim/Angus” as the dam of a $20000 steer? This is the one that can do that. I have always thought donor cow when I look at this one. I may sound like a broken record, but I think the quality runs deep in these open heifers and many are donor caliber.

Guest Breeder: R&L Vermeer Farms LLC You decide which one of these E.T. sisters is better as we have argued about it all fall. We love these Built Right daughters. We all have our certain “likes” when we select cattle. Deb loves a perfect hipped one – they both have that. I(Mark) love soundness and not “she’s sound enough” but true structural integrity- they both have that. Bart loves them to be true females from a muscle, bone and shoulder design- they both do that so thus the debates(we are tired of debates☺) These will be greener than some as we didn’t wean early from the ET cooperator herds but neither one of our families have ever won with an early weaned, over managed one so buy with future confidence in mind. Miss Maggie has been Golden for us from her first banner victory to this pair of females.

Her sire is an In Dew Time x K18, a mating that has always worked well here. He is doing a great job cleaning up our heifers and always leaves us with great calves. It is always nice to turn out a bull whose calves are as good as the AI sired ones. With that kind of maternal genetics behind this heifer, you know she will make a great cow. Ask Jered Shipman what he thinks of that bull, semen is available. As you can see, there is a lot of predictability in this cow family. We purchased her mother out of the Louisville sale a few years back with Core Farms and has turned out to be a great investment. She has turned into an absolutely jaw dropping female and think that there is a lot more to come from her. She is very attractive, super soft middled, very sound, and has great hair. She is one of the youngest heifers of ours to sell, but we think her quality makes her an easy fit in this offering. Her great grandam is the Foundation heifer the Shaake family won so much with and is now a lead donor for Bob Vermeer in his program. Her grandam, 810U, has a bull calf that you have to make time to see if you come to the sale. I think it is always wise to buy heifers that can raise heifers as well as bulls. If you are looking for a fun jackpot heifer that will go on and be a very competitive bred, make sure to check out this heifer. Offered with Core Farms.

Batten down the hatches here! This is what a show heifer needs to look like in my opinion. Super sound, rocket necked, big bellied, square, and has that long, smooth muscle pattern. Leslie makes fun of me because I even think her ear set is ideal for a show heifer. Her mother is a purebred Meyer cow out of NJC Lexus, an Ebony Antoinette daughter. Not only are you buying a great show heifer, you are buying a great cow family with it. Her full brother was a member of our Champion Pen of 3 Purebred Bulls at the National Western and went on to be a high seller at our bull sale. Phenotype definitely runs deep in this family. This one may be young, but I think she has a very bright future ahead of her. Offered with West Fork Farm.

I was going to sell this heifer as an open last year, but decided I didn’t want to part with her. Well, her mother had a full sister this spring so I guess we can sell one. This blaze faced heifer is moderate and very good looking. As I always say, the moderate ones are the money makers. They eat less, breed back and produce calves that weigh as much as the big, hard doing cows. Her dam is a Meyer x 6807, how about that for maternal genetics. The Ringleaders back on the In Dew Times have really worked here and a couple of our better spring bull calves are bred like that. Imagine the value of a baldy Ringleader bull calf! Safe to AI date with a bull calf.

Guest Breeder: R&L Vermeer Farms LLC What a flush this was last year. We are excited about bringing this pair of full sisters for your inspection. Miss Maggie is as impressive to look at today as she was in the show ring and then to see what she is producing is truly impressive. We are no means experts in this business but it does seem logical to us that this is how they are supposed to be built a few months before their first calf. I have heard a lot smart livestock evaluators in every species preach the fact of “keep it basic”. These females are sound, feminine, naturally wide built and the right size. Both were A.I’d to “In Dew Times” full brother- Duracell.

Round, sound, and low to the ground! Time and time again these moderate framed cattle make us the most money and this one will be no exception. She is very nice necked and stout. Explanation of ASA’s New EPD Evaluations Presenting Fall 2012 EPDs on a NEW BASE:
Page 24 • • • Elite Bred Heifers
The Fall 2012 ASA Genetic Evaluation marks the first time major breeds have expressed their EPDs on a common base (i.e., the same scale). The common base was a natural evaluation of the RAAA/ASA genetic evaluation partnership. Though forming a common base will initially lead to some confusion, the boards of both organizations unanimously agreed that it was a positive step for the beef industry – a step that allows producers to directly compare genetic predictions from the largest multi-breed database in the world. As with any progress, there is change. Breeders and commercial producers will need to adjust to the new base. Much like converting from Fahrenheit to Celsius, it may be a struggle at first, however, over time we will all grow accustomed to the new scale. For example, look at the average EPDs of purebreds shown in this table to the right. The changes to the base does not change the evaluation of animals; it just changes the magnitude of the EPD. It has the same impact on all animals. Be sure to use the new percentile tables to develop a “feel” for the new EPD base.

Livin the dream…what a great time to be in the beef business! This 2nd annual Livin’ The Dream sale is packing a punch when it comes to quality in numbers. The dedicated breeders have done the homework for you by producing proven bloodlines, concentrating on the numbers while maintaining style, soundness and profitability. The open show heifers will gather their share of the purple before many of them will enter donor pens for their new owners. American Simmental Junior National Classic is just a state away with Nebraska hosting the 2013 event and the show dolls in this sale are just the kind you need to throw the show halter on and make some memories. It is not often that you can come to one location and select from such an unique set of bred females carrying the service of not only the breeders proven herd bulls but nationally accepted sires as well. Again, the homework is done for you as the cattle are bred the same as if they were staying in the “keeper pen.” It will be a great weekend to head to Iowa as there are many sales set so we hope your travel plans will include the “Livin the Dream” Sale. The sale is once again set at 2 pm to allow everyone a bit more travel time and plan on joining us for lunch. We have an outstanding marketing team available to help you with your purchases or answer any questions you may have, feel free to contact them or any of the breeders. Liveauction.tv will also be available for viewing and bidding on this elegant set of ladies. We look forward to seeing you in Murray!

Without a doubt, the hottest bull of any breed at the 2011 National Western Stock Show. Excalibur commanded $65,000 for half-interest in “The One” Simmental sale making him the highest priced lot to ever go through that sale. The combination of having no Dream On and no Meyer 734 anywhere in his pedigree only adds to the value of this exciting young sire. He is as long and clean necked as you can make a purebred bull, while still maintaining a soft look. His ability to combine so much mass and so much soundness only adds to his appeal. Excalibur is truly a bull you have to see to believe. Semen is being offered on the open market, available to everyone.

Wide Open is one of the most unique Simmental sires to come onto the scene in recent history. While in Denver, he was a high seller in the sale and was named Bull Calf Champion. His fresh genetics, power and athleticism made him a favorite among purebred breeders and club calf producers alike. His pedigree traces to X339U on the top and bottom, plus Black Irish Kansas, Black Mick and 600U. If you are looking to inject some maternal power into your cowherd without sacrificing eye appeal and performance, Wide Open is an absolute must use bull.
