or months now, whenever I would contemplate the direction of this valuable editor’s platform, I was certain I’d use it to elaborate upon my love of all things celebrity, and how that love (at times bordering on obsession) inspired this edition’s theme. From there, I assumed I’d embrace a conventional editorial route and go on to shine the spotlight (excuse the pun) on some of the outstanding celebrity features we have in store: from our exclusive interviews with legendary designer MICHAEL KORS and superlative supermodel PETRA NEMCOVA to our profile of globally revered chef/restaurateur DANIEL BOULUD, peek into media personality/author DOMINIQUE BERTRAND’s stunning Florida retreat, hot photo shoot with Montreal Canadiens P.K. SUBBAN and BRANDON PRUST and last word with Canada’s reigning king of entertainment BEN MULRONEY. (Not too shabby for a newbie local publication.) However, when push came to type, fresh inspiration struck. All I could think about was the amazing talent machine that made this edition possible; the extraordinary pack of professionals who came together in the best, most proactive way to shape this, our most glittering, creative offering to date. And so, in an in electronic age when print faces its greatest adversity in history (and naysayers galore told me, once again, to throw in the towel), I dedicate the realization of a seemingly impossible proposition to the team: gifted writers, editors and contributors, a masterful art director, brilliant photographers, fashion-forward stylists, powerhouse coordinators, impeccable models, transformative makeup artists, savvy hair stylists, skilled retouchers, visionary advertising partners, and myriad others, all of whom saw the potential of the party publication and ran with it. Clearly, when good people come together, GREAT things happen. And with the right team, you can reach for the stars… and catch them. Hope you agree and enjoy. Happy, healthy New Year. Much love always, xxJenn

PS: Stay tuned for a whole new look and team at DIARYOFASOCIALGAL.COM, the next generation. Launching with love FEBRUARY 14TH, 2014. The party never ends.

Spotlight on: Contributors KARÈLE BELLAVANCE,

DESIGNER/ILLUSTRATOR. PAGE 138

CELEBRITY CRUSH: I’m always debating between Statham or Tatum. STAR CLOSET YOU’D MOST LIKE TO BLING RING: The Olsen twins’. Comfy + fashion = epic combo. BEST PARTY YOU’VE EVER BEEN TO AND WHY: Last summer, my BF and I organized a big party on our rooftop terrace. Christmas lights were everywhere, along with tapas, wine, music and good friends. We had a great time but then there was the next morning. We won’t be doing it again. Sad but true.

ALISON ROBINS, WRITER, PAGE 114

CELEBRITY CRUSH: James Dean. STAR CLOSET YOU’D MOST LIKE TO BLING RING: Miranda Kerr’s. BEST PARTY YOU’VE EVER BEEN TO AND WHY: My best friend’s birthday, always. I love planning for the people I love :).

CAIA HAGEL, WRITER, PAGE 130

CELEBRITY CRUSH: James Franco and Bill Maher (OMG but he’s so good!). STAR CLOSET YOU’D MOST LIKE TO BLING RING: Obviously Sofia Coppola’s but also Lou Doillon’s, Alexa Chung’s and Kate Moss’s. BEST PARTY YOU’VE EVER BEEN TO AND WHY: A house party with Heath Ledger is extra memorable because it will never happen again ...

GENEVIÈVE CHARBONNEAU,

PHOTOGRAPHER, PAGES 76, 84

SUZANNE WEXLER,

WRITER, PAGES 102, 11, 114

CELEBRITY CRUSH: Annie Leibovitz. She’s a spectacular photographer; every time I check out a behind-the scenes of one of her shoots, I wish I were a fly on the wall. STAR CLOSET YOU’D MOST LIKE TO BLING RING: Jennifer Lopez’s. I know it’s déjà vu but darn, that girl’s style rocks. From casual to dress-up to hip hop, I love it all (except that red jumpsuit). BEST PARTY YOU’VE EVER BEEN TO AND WHY: Some of my girls’ nights out are pretty fantastic; always a party. They know who they are.

2 2 / DI ARY O F A S O CIAL G A L

CELEBRITY CRUSH: Morrissey. STAR CLOSET YOU’D MOST LIKE TO BLING RING: Chloé Sevigny. I saw her at an outdoor The Cure concert in New York and she looked pretty darn hot. BEST PARTY YOU’VE EVER BEEN TO AND WHY: A Guy Laliberté Formula One after-party. It was surreal. Robert De Niro was in Laliberté’s basement while Analyze This played on a giant screen. The house had several indoor pools and hot tubs, Outside there was even an extra moon in the sky (a distant oversized lamp perhaps, but who can be sure?).

ESTELLE GERVAIS, STYLE CONTRIBUTOR, PAGE 88

OLIVIA COLETTE, WRITER, PAGES 104, 124

CELEBRITY CRUSH: Courtney Love (and there isn’t a thing you can say about her that I haven’t already heard). STAR CLOSET YOU’D MOST LIKE TO BLING RING: Olivia Palermo’s, but I’d turn my nose up at it a little first. BEST PARTY YOU’VE EVER BEEN TO AND WHY: My own Thanksgiving dinner party. Because each year it gets bigger, which inevitably means more food.

ASHLEY KARP, WRITER, PAGES 92, 118

CELEBRITY CRUSH: Leonardo DiCaprio. STAR CLOSET YOU’D MOST LIKE TO BLING RING: Olivia Palermo’s. BEST PARTY YOU’VE EVER BEEN TO AND WHY: A brunch party at Lavo in Vegas, because when it was over, Barney’s was still open next door.

CELEBRITY CRUSH: I have this little thing for powerful, emotionally disturbed TV characters. Harvey Specter (Gabriel Macht) and/or Don Draper (Jon Hamm), call me. STAR CLOSET YOU’D MOST LIKE TO BLING RING: Famous blogger Elin Kling’s or Vogue Paris editor Emmanuelle Alt’s. Both have chic down. BEST PARTY YOU’VE EVER BEEN TO AND WHY: An Absolutely Fabulous themed party I attended this summer at my girlfriend’s place in Paris. It was my first time in the city of lights. The whole thing, abfab.

JENNIFER HOWE, WRITER, PAGE 100

CELEBRITY CRUSH: With his piercing blue eyes, abs of steel and Canadian charm, Stephen Amell had me at hello. Besides, there’s something sexy about a man who can pull off a tight green suit, n’est ce pas? STAR CLOSET YOU’D MOST LIKE TO BLING RING: From red carpet to real life, Jessica Alba has style down to a science. If this fashion maven’s effortlessly edgy looks are any indication of her closet contents, I’d love to take her wardrobe for a test drive. BEST PARTY YOU’VE EVER BEEN TO AND WHY: A black-tie Christmas gathering hosted by one of my best friends. Fabulous fashion, crisp champagne and being surrounded by the people I care about most made this a night to remember.

doasg3_P22-23_contributors.indd 22

ASHLEY KOWALEWSKI, WRITER, PAGE 99

MATHIEU CHARROIS, PHOTOGRAPHER, PAGES 20, 97

CELEBRITY CRUSH: Kate Beckinsale. STAR CLOSET YOU’D MOST LIKE TO BLING RING: The Great Gatsby wardrobe. BEST PARTY YOU’VE EVER BEEN TO AND WHY: We were a group of childhood friends, plus a horse and two dogs. There was a beautiful sunset over the St. Lawrence. It was perfect.

CELEBRITY CRUSH: Matt Damon. Hands down. Forever and ever (and ever). STAR CLOSET YOU’D MOST LIKE TO BLING RING: Nicole Richie’s! She always looks equal parts chic and comfortable. BEST PARTY YOU’VE EVER BEEN TO AND WHY: The Tutu Project launch at the Design Exchange in Toronto last fall. As a former ballerina, seeing the fabulous tutus and props made me beyond nostalgic. Plus, half of Toronto was there and the energy was out of this world.

The Daffodil Ball

GREAT DAFFODIL A ROARING SUCCESS S

eeing that this special holiday edition of Diary embraces a celebrity theme (we clearly heart themes on the Diary front), it’s only fitting that we kick off the LIVE THE PARTY section – capturing highlights from the immediate past spring-summer social season – with what is arguably one of the most famous events in the province, if not the country: The dazzling, award-laden Daffodil Ball, benefiting the Canadian Cancer Society, which marked a momentous 20th anniversary this past April. Now, despite having gargantuan faith in powerhouse Daffodil creator/ director ALISON SILCOFF (who could likely move Himalayas if the mandate prescribed it), I was admittedly curious about how she and her just as gifted creative crew – peppered with the likes of illumination guru NOL VAN GENUCHTEN, floral designer YVES CHÉNIER and the event masters at DECOR & MORE – would pay homage to this milestone. Was it even possible to take the already legendary fundraising ball to the next level of excellence? Of course it was! (And how dare I have doubted such colossal reserves of talent, drive and determination in the first place.) The timely Great

doasg3_P24-27_daff.indd 24

Gatsby-themed 20th anniversary edition, chaired with elegance, panache and commitment by supercorps JAVIER SAN JUAN, president/CEO L’Oréal Canada, DOMENIC PILLA, president/ CEO Shoppers Drug Mart/Pharmaprix, and MICHAEL SABIA, president/CEO Caisse de dépôt et placement du Québec, was unequivocally the glammest Daff to date, and raised a phenomenal $2,062,000 for the society. Among the eve’s most memorable touches were: a canary yellow vintage Rolls – not unlike Jay G.’s in the inspiration tome – parked at the entrance to Windsor Station; an enchanting "living fountain," imported from California (mountains, fountains – all movable for Alison!); magnificent Art Deco-inspired décor in the dining room (BAZ LUHRMANN clearly has competition); ingeniously themed eats (kudos encore to the epicurean experts at the Queen E.); and kicking performances by the likes of the literally (high) kicking Ziegfeld Follies. What an anniversary! The high-powered, star-studded crowd was electrified and had the flapper-fabulous time of their lives. Heck, don’t take my word for it; turn the page and recapture the roar.

Les Grands Ballets Canadiens de Montréal Benefit Gala

LES GRANDS TAPS INTO P.O.W. (POWER OF WOMEN) I

f celebrity is this edition’s official theme, then a sub-theme (one that I always hold close to my heart) might well be a celebration of this era’s powerful women, who slowly but surely, continue to rise to unprecedented professional heights. While Silcoff has certainly done so in the event industry (garnering a staggering number of highly respected awards for the aforementioned Daffodil Ball and other Silcoff-produced events), ISABELL HUDON, president of Sun Life Financial Quebec, has seen her star shine bright, both at the apex of several prestigious corporations and as head of numerous charitable boards and committees. This past May, Hudon was asked to lend her singular drive and determination to one of our most important cultural treasures, Les Grands Ballets Canadiens de Montréal, in preparation for its annual benefit gala Projected into the Future. She did so as honourary president, and helped mold the 2013 event into one of the company’s

doasg3_P30-33_grands.indd 30

best ever. A record-breaking million dollars was raised; A-List guests raved over the live auction with rockstar auctioneer ROCH FOURNIER; dancing to Paul Chacra’s 1945 band was nonstop; and perhaps most memorable, a compelling 3-D holographic montage unveiled Les Grands’ plans for a new Maison de la danse and other inspiring future endeavors. Could all this spectacular (recorded in the following pages for your enjoyment) also have had a little sumpin to do with the 24 like-minded women of influence Hudon brought onto the committee that glittered with the accomplished likes of: media personality/author DOMINIQUE BERTRAND; Fédération des Chambres de Commerce du Québec president/CEO FRANÇOISE BERTRAND; Woods L.L.P. partner CAROLINE BIRON; PricewaterhouseCoopers partner SONIA BOISVERT; TD Waterhouse associate private banker CAMÉLIA BOUNHAR; Laferrière et Brixi owner NADIA BRIXI; McCarthy Tetrault associate ELEONORE DEROME; Desjardins Insurance vice-

he scene: It was early May. Hot tunes pulsated in the background; delectable food stations abounded and some 650 young movers and groovers occupied Entrepôts Dominion in the best, most stylish way. Had I descended upon some sort of hipster paradise, where worries dissolved and the most immediate decision was whether to hit the dance floor, snap a pic with friends or stack plates sky high with luscious food & drink? Nope, not hipster paradise. But close. Exceedingly close. I had happened upon one of the sizzlingest events of the year: The McCord Museum Sugar Ball, brain baby of The Young McCord – a pack of young professionals passionate about art and culture and the vital role the McCord Museum plays therein. Even cooler: The determined crew’s party planning perspicacity was outdistanced only by its fundraising acumen. Hipster paradise – with a Golden Age of Cinema theme inspired by the McCord’s then-exhibit, From Philadelphia to Monaco: Grace Kelly - Beyond the Icon – raised close to $75,000 for the museum. Kudos to the organizing committee, chaired with sweet brilliance by CHRISTINE LENIS and NICOLAS CHENARD PAUL.

or those of you who tune into Gazette Social Notes on a fairly regular basis, you know that yours truly has a bit of an obsession with all things Sex and the City. In fact, I’m one of the few (shame on the rest of you!) who actually liked the much-anticipated big screen sequel, and reveled in the depiction of the glam girl getaway to an Abu Dhabi-disguised Marrakesh – an exotic locale that has since become a dream destination. So you could imagine the glee this past spring as I made my way into the ruby and ginger tented JGH CIBC Benefit Tennis Gala, expertly chaired by GARY WECHSLER, DEMO TRIFONOPOULOS, and GEORGE ITZKOVITZ, only to discover that, thanks to the visionaries at Luxe Rentals/Location Gervais, the magic of Marrakesh had been skillfully delivered to our fair city for the night. Even more enticing (could it get any better?!): The belly-dancing, snake-charming, lantern-laden party utopia raised a rocking $350,000 for the Jewish General Hospital’s research and treatment-based vascular health program. Clearly, success is in the silk and souk.

hemistry is everything, and that between Ferrari and Hotel Le St. James is, in a word, stunning. Especially when it comes to their annual Saturday night F1 Grand Prix cocktail event. This year’s offering, toasting the 20th anniversary of the Ferrari Challenge in Montreal – hosted by Ferrari North America president/CEO MARCO MATTIACCI and chic wife FARAH – was no exception. Some of the more entrancing highlights included the steady stream of Veuve Clicquot, mounds of sushi, and of course, the glittering crowd. In addition to resplendent regulars like Ferrari Maserati Quebec topman UMBERTO BONFA and wife ANGELA, Olympians ALEXANDRE DESPATIE and ALEXANDRE BILODEAU, and movie mogul VINCE GUZZO and wife MARIA, this year’s festivities also attracted X-Men director BRYAN SINGER and rom-com king HUGH GRANT, a Ferrari Grand Prix VIP guest who, much to the dismay of every red-blooded female in attendance, spent most of the night dialoguing with Miss America 2013 MALLORY HAGAN (in Joseph Ribkoff) and Virgin Radio fashion blogeresse LISA KISBER. Thank goodness for all those other dazzling diversions.

hile certain fetes are F1 GP staples, each year brings the promise of a fresh addition. And one of 2013’s most memorable was the Ritz-Carlton Montréal bash presented in collaboration with McLaren and Formula 1 Tours. Just what took it over the top? Well, as is Ritz tradition and president/ GM ANDREW TORRIANI’s modus operandi, everything (and I mean everything) was first class fabu: From the welcoming Everest of Moët & Chandon, swanky Holt Renfrew fashion show (yes, NORMAND CIARLO was there) and mouthwatering buffet (choice seafood and meat aplenty), to the decked Oval Room, blooming bouquets (courtesy of Le Bouquet) and of course, the much-anticipated McLaren wheels centerpiece (talk about a statement). Über guests – including restaurateur DANIEL BOULUD, Decarie Motors topman JOEL SEGAL and love CHERYL BLAS, Olympians ALEXANDRE BILODEAU and BRUNY SURIN, sports personality JESSE PALMER, racer PATRICK CARPENTIER and Montreal Canadiens RENE BOURQUE, P.K. SUBBAN, LOUIS LEBLANC, and LARS ELLER – were smitten. Of course they were.

CLOTHES MAKE THE MAN (AHEM, MEN)

Luxe launches were all the rage this past spring-summer season …

LAUNCH

LIV E T HE PAR T Y

LET’S DO

Unless you’ve been vacationing in the middle of the Sahara Desert, with no access to civilization (or worse, social media), you’re likely aware of spring’s explosive retail boom at SquareDix30, on the happening South Shore. It was in this spirit that I was flooded with invites to many of the big brand openings, including the VIP launch of the exclusive M/2 Boutiques. While the opening was a happening unto itself – the seemingly endless supply of interesting men and irresistible amuses-bouches did not go unnoticed – the ultimate lure was the 13,000 square foot commercial space housing row upon row of glorious man threads from 15 prestige brand partners (think DIESEL, Hugo Boss, Lacoste, ETON, Hörst, Tiger of Sweden, Paul & Shark, RIVIERA, John Varvatos, Jack Victor, Robert Graham, KlaussBoehler, Ted Baker, ZZegna, and Strellson). As for the guests? Think high-profile with a capital H. M/2 founder/president MARC MERCIER wouldn’t have it any other way.

P.F., OUR NEW B.F.

When a powerhouse eatery like P.F. Chang’s China Bistro comes to town, as it did this spring, you know that the opening festivities (and the food) are going to be over the top. And they were. When I wasn’t abandoning every last ounce of self-control to the beckoning trays brimming with house delicacies like tuna tataki, red chili shrimp with noodles and crab wontons with dipping sauce, I was hyper aware of the up-to-theminute contempo-luxe surroundings, a staple of the beloved international brand that pays equal attention to décor and ambiance. As for the guest list, close to 500 highprofile movers and shakers a la Interaction Asian Restaurants’ president/CEO MICHAEL ARONOVICI, Claridge’s STEPHEN BRONFMAN, and bistro founder/brand ambassador PHILIP CHIANG were in the house, thrilled to welcome the much-anticipated culinary newcomer to its latest port. What could possibly be better than being a special guest of one of Canada’s premier businesswomen and philanthropists – founder of Lise Watier Cosmétiques LISE WATIER – at the much-anticipated Evening with Oprah Winfrey at the Bell Centre (seated third row center on the floor)? Oh, maybe the official preevent cocktail launch of the revered beauty mogul’s most recent Rouge Fondant Suprême collection (complete with official Oprah shade), topped by a post-Oprah, champagne-soaked début celebration of the company’s 40th anniversary virtual book launch. It would be wholly unprofessional (remiss, really) to not include herein the June Bentley Montreal/ Decarie Motors’ unveiling of the Bentley Flying Spur – the fiercest four door Bentley ever built – at event hotspot Arsenal. Boasting an alluring Temple of the Flying Spur theme, replete with glamazons garbed in Grecian temple chic (Manina Productions did it again), the launch attracted some of the ville’s most powerful influencers, including Octane president/CEO FRANÇOIS DUMONTIER and celebrity host GENEVIÈVE BORNE. And of course, all were beyond taken with the fantasy cool ambiance, impressive apps of the edible variety and undisputed star of the night: The Flying Spur, proudly presented by CHRISTOPHE GEORGES, president/ COO of Bentley Motors (who jetted in especially for the evening). Top it all of with president of Bentley Montreal/Decarie Motors JOEL SEGAL’s announcement that sizeable funds were raised for the Miriam Foundation, an organization committed to creating meaningful and productive lives for people with autism and developmental disabilities, and I’d say it was a pretty soaring soirée.

RETAIL THERAPY WITH A CONSCIENCE No, I’m not going to rehash all the fun & fab deets from Abe & Mary’s spring VIP launch of L’Atelier 1958: A very New York-esque weekly sale of one-of-a-kind samples from the most coveted brands at beyond LOW prices (think Parker, Rebecca Taylor, Ash, Vince, Splendid, Ella Moss, Molton Brown, Zents and more). But I am going to gush more than a little on a) how fantastic and visionary it was of Abe & Mary’s owner/ L’Atelier 1958 creator CATHERINE CLAMAN to bring this concept to our fair city, and b) how cool it is that a portion of the proceeds are donated to the Mary Katz Claman (MKC) Foundation, established by Catherine in 2005 in honour of her mother. As for all that gluten-free sushi and chocolate-dipped strawberries washed down with pretty albeit potent BRAHM MAUER ’tinis? A shopping gal’s dream. Photography DAVID VILDER

GLORIA HENRIQUEZ

ANIK LACASSE - RICHARD

Although legendary Maison Veuve Clicquot had its pick of hot international cities for the global debut of Yelloweek this past spring (a week-long celebration of food, fashion, art and culture as refined and elegant as the house itself), the savvy bosses behind the brand chose North America’s party city for the worldwide launch. And what a wise decision that was. Organizers, including Manina Productions, paid spectacular homage to BARBENICOLE CLICQUOT PONSARDIN (the entrepreneur who took the luxury brand to the next level) with a fiesta of themed events. While all are deserving of mention (really wow), we shine the spotlight on the official kick-off – a chic-as-would-be-expected extravaganza at Maison Birks’ beautiful downtown flagship, where a themed fashion show presented by style scribe LOLITTA DANDOY, featured original designs by talented young designers HELMER, VFRANZ, ELISA C-ROSSOW and NATALIA BAQUERO. And if the fab fashions and backdrop weren’t enough of a lure, there was more: Stunning footwear by Browns; the unveiling of Maison Birks’ exclusive yellow diamond collection; superb eats by master chef JERÔME FERRER (of Birks Café by Europea); and the steadiest, most welcome stream of yes … Veuve Clicquot. “We’re so thrilled with the evening”, beamed Veuve Clicquot marketing manager for Quebec CINDY LEVY. “Ditto,” we said.

Finally, what better, more stylish segue to the next fash-focused LOOK THE PARTY section than a graphic homage to the most recent Montreal Fashion Week (MFW) presented by homegrown Sensation Mode, in collaboration with P&G Beauty & Grooming. t’s no easy feat to make it as a fashion designer in this day and age. Competition is fierce and talent abounds. Nor is it easy to take things to the next level and create an enduring global lifestyle brand synonymous with luxury and style. Thirdly, it’s pretty close to impossible to top it all off with a compelling presence on one of the most watched reality television shows of the decade. Well, legendary, award-winning designer MICHAEL KORS has managed to do all three. He has legions of loyal clients across the globe who line up each season for his trendsetting collections (celebrity devotees include A-listers Jennifer Lopez, Rachel McAdams, Jennifer Garner, Heidi Klum, Catherine Zeta-Jones and First Lady Michelle Obama). He has an international empire with fruitful forays into beauty, accessories and more (his minimalist glam boutiques are the stuff of shopping dreams). And finally, he’s experienced astonishing success as a beloved panelist on THE must-watch style competition, Project Runway, thereby achieving his own star status. Triple lucky for us? He also happens to be lending his expert eye to this special celebrity edition, weighing in on all kinds of fabulous for the holidays and beyond. Enjoy.

I know I know: we’re knee deep in LOOK THE PARTY and here we are tossing another event into the fold. But there’s method to this editorial madness (ahem, maneuver): Not only is The God’s Love We Deliver Golden Heart Awards Dinner among the most stylish on the planet – one of the hottest tickets on the New York social circuit – but it also happens to be awash in celebrities (right on theme). And it’s co-chaired by the just-profiled MICHAEL KORS, who, along with fellow style icon and evening co-chair ANNA WINTOUR, just happened to present the first-ever Michael Kors Award for Community Service to former Secretary of State HILLARY RODHAM CLINTON. The evidence is in. The event is simply too good a fit (and too fabulous) not to include, right here, right now. Enjoy.

hen it comes to supermodel splendor, Czech-born PETRA NEMVOCA is a walking billboard: the flowing golden tresses, ultra-white smile, dancing eyes and blissful body, all of which have graced countless leading magazine covers, including those belonging to Madame Figaro, Elle, Shape, Cosmopolitan, Flare, Vegas, Glamour and, of course, the legendary Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue. Predictably, there have also been myriad largescale campaigns with some of the globe’s most recognizable brands, like Benetton, Bulgari, Cartier, Clarins, Fortunoff, Hewlett Packard/Intel, La Perla, Max Factor, Pantene Pro-V, Playtex, Schwarzkopf and Victoria’s Secret, along with several memorable turns on television (think Absolutely Fabulous, A Model Life and Dancing With The Stars). But what truly sets this supermodel apart – inspiring a stunning and enduring career that continues to take flight in a competitive environment notorious for its evanescence – is an indomitable spirit and contagious positive energy that have helped to see her through seemingly impossible life challenges, including her against-allodds survival of (and recovery from) the devastating 2004 Indian Ocean Tsunami, which also claimed the life of her beloved fiancé, photographer Simon Atlee. I had the invaluable opportunity to sit down with Petra at a recent shoot for Browns’ fall campaign at Barry Harris Studio. The charming model with the adorable accent was everything I had expected and more – a soul-replenishing ray of sunshine – as we kicked

doasg3_P58-59_Petra.indd 59

up our Browns heels to chat parties, beauty, fitness, philanthropy and yes, fashion (a perfect addition to this celebrity issue): Petra, you’ve attended some really good parties. I want to know which are the most memorable and why. The best ones are those with my friends, a very different energy. You just feel you can be yourself, truly yourself. I think one of the best was in Cannes, during the film festival. I was there with my girlfriend who is also a makeup artist and hairdresser. We were staying together and having a great time. She was also, apart from being a makeup artist, hairdresser and best friend, often a bodyguard and publicist and everything together! And one evening we were with some friends. We were with Bono. Always nice to be with Bono in Cannes! It was Bono and my girlfriend Liberty. They were singing together, one of U2’s songs. As my girlfriend explains, she’s like “I’ve been doing karaoke with Bono!” [I loved] seeing her so happy, getting that chance to sing with Bono, who’s an incredible human being and incredible musician. It was many, many years ago but she still talks about it every time I see her. That was a lot of action. But now [turning to] fashion: When you’re headed to a party, do you have a go-to outfit, something that you’re most comfortable in? Us girls wanna know. Well, I guess just a sexy Hervé Léger dress will always do, you know? You’re my kind of woman. What I love about Hervé – not that you need this – he just sucks it right in. Yes, he does, it’s a second skin. And it always works. I’m with you. What about beauty? Any

beauty tips? For me, it’s less is more. But with everything in my life, actually, less is more. Mies van der Rohe said that. I really believe that. And also with makeup: Just a little eyeliner, either on the top or the bottom eyelashes and that’s it. It’s simple. Focus either on the eyes or only on the lips with colour, one or the other. That’s it and it takes five minutes. And then your true essence shines. Yes, just let your spirit shine, your true self. And it’s better if people are attracted to your true self than to something you are not. What about fitness? I think this [pointing to Petra’s figure] is genetically gifted. I don’t think there’s that much exercise but do share whatever it is. We need secrets. I’m definitely curvier genetically. You’re curvy? Shoot me now. I do work out. I don’t work out as often as I used to because there’s just so much going on. But it’s sort of mixing it: working out in the gym, working out outside, a little running, a little football. Football, interesting. Wherever I am and whoever is with me and whatever they like to do, I sort of do it with them. If I’m in New York and I need to work out for a job more intensively, then Physique 57 is incredible. If this is the result of that regimen, I’m in. Do you like to host a lot of parties? Any insider tips there? I like to theme them. Once, it was for my partner at the time and me, we were celebrating [our] thirtieth [birthdays]. And since we were born in ‘79, the theme was [the] eighties. What I loved about it was not just the dress up, but under the plates we had vinyl records. My friends still

talk about the vinyl records. It was a great touch! It’s funny. When we throw a great party, the success is in the details. Yes, people remember those details for sure. How do you “escape the party,” recharge and reboot? I was thinking my escape routes from the party! [laughter] Nature, my loved ones, my partner, my friends, my family. And in nature, that’s my best, that’s my favourite. The energy, which I get from it, and also in my meditation. One last question. I know you do lot of great work [when it comes to charity]. So, can you give us a quick mention or shout out to your favorite charity or foundation? Well, I can’t start without Happy Hearts Fund, which is a foundation we started in 2006. And in six years, we have rebuilt 72 schools around the world. And this year we will have another 12 opened. So every single day, that’s what I do, I focus on it. And it’s my joy. There are so many amazing [other] ones I really love, like Robinhood in New York (many of them are to do with education). Charity Water too. The list is endless. We’ve got to do a part two at a future time because you’re so lovely. This can’t be our last interview. OK, that would be a pleasure. Mine. Thank you so much. You are a doll really; everything Annie [Cohen] said times a million.

Ya gotta love exclusives that complement the theme. This one – Diary scribe ASHLEY KARP’s enlightening chat with makeup artist to the stars DERRICK RUTLEDGE – is a definite keeper.

MAKEUP THROUGH THE EYES OF A MASTER DERRICK RUTLEDGE SHARES HIS MAGIC BY ASHLEY KARP

M

akeup is like magic. It can render the ordinary extraordinary with a few masterful strokes of a wand (er, brush). Like magic, its practitioners range from amateur bush leaguers to trailblazing virtuosos. At the top lie the awe-inspiring makeup artist pioneers – the Houdinis of the beauty world – who skillfully transform the humblest of tabula rasas into veritable works of art. DERRICK RUTLEDGE undoubtedly falls into the latter camp – a master who uses his powers for good, to help many of the world’s most influential women achieve flawlessness. Beyoncé, First Lady Michelle Obama and Oprah are but a few of the iconic names that comprise part of his impressive celebrity client roster. Most recently, he worked his magic on the set of the box office hit, The Butler, creating looks that expertly transitioned Oprah’s character from one stage of life to the next over a 50-year period. They say a good magician never reveals his secrets. Until now.

The magician and his wands.

big event.

It is often said that beauty is in the eye of the beholder. What is your definition of true beauty? Beauty can be interpreted in so many ways, whether it is physical or internal. To me, true beauty comes from within. It comes from confidence, healthy skin, a great spirit and an alluring smile. You have worked with some of the world’s most famous and powerful women. What do they have in common? They are all very confident women who live healthy and active lifestyles. They drink a lot of water and pay close attention to what they put into their system. It really makes my job easier because I don’t have as many facial flaws to cover. The makeup just helps to bring out their natural confidence. What is your favourite party look? I like creating the appearance of a dark, smoky eye. This makes the eyes more piercing and fierce. Also, if you’re going to emphasize the eyes, then always remember to make the lips more neutral. What are your makeup must-haves? The top five things that a woman should have in her makeup bag are a good moisturizer, foundation, a dark waterproof liner, a lipstick or gloss, and mascara. Mascara is one of the most essential products – eyes are the windows to the soul and your lashes are important to showcase natural expression. What are your tricks for making makeup last? For great flawless skin, find a foundation that matches your skin perfectly and top it off with a matching powder. When applying lipstick, line your lips with liner and powder them a bit prior to applying the lipstick – this helps it last longer. For eyes, always use waterproof or smudge-proof liner and seal it with powder. That will take you through the whole day. What inspires you as an artist? What inspires me professionally is knowing that after I’ve finished working on a client, she will look at herself in the mirror in awe and love the image staring back at her – what a fulfilling moment that is! Another important thing that inspires me is knowing that I’m creating quality products [via his own skincare, makeup, body and hair care line, Ü Lifestyle, pronounced OOH] that are not only healthy, but nourishing to the body.

We may not have Hollywood’s glam squads and beauty pros on speed dial, but we do have some savvy grooming gals on hand, like beauty and style writer JENNIFER HOWE, armed with the latest and greatest celeb-stamped products du jour. What are you waiting for? Get primping … your ruby carpet awaits.

BEAUTY SECRETS FROM THE STARS BY JENNIFER HOWE

MANE EVENT

The Rachel may have had its day, but JENNIFER ANISTON’s tousled tresses are still making waves, especially since her recent partnership with hot hair company LIVING PROOF. One of its most popular products, THE RESTORE MASK TREATMENT, is a preevent must for the golden-haired goddess and will do just as godly things for your locks. Dry and damaged, meet your worst enemy (courtesy of our favourite Friend). $50 at Sephora.

NAIL NIRVANA, NO DOUBT Gorgeous, gifted GWEN STEFANI has mastered music and motherhood (while we’ve cornered the market on alliteration). Now she’s taken on manicures and partnered with OPI for a punk-inspired collection due in 2014. Boasting breakthrough finishes and the songstress’s enviable edge, we have “no doubt” the limited edition sevenshade capsule collection will rock and hue. $10.95 at professional salons (not available until 2014).

TOM WHO?

There’s a reason beauty empress BOBBI BROWN handpicked KATIE HOLMES for the brand’s most recent campaign. Not only does she (the archetypal modern woman) exude confidence and intelligence, Holmes is a natural beauty who radiates from within. That being said, a little BOBBI BROWN SHIMMER BRICK COMPACT IN PINK QUARTZ does do delightfully shimmery things for the cheekbones (making Tom’s loss all the more glaring. Or is it glowing?) $49 at Bobbi Brown counters and bobbibrown.ca.

CAMERAREADY

When Hollywood royals like AMANDA SEYFRIED prep for close-ups, you can be sure they owe much of their complexion perfection to cult-classic CLÉ DE PEAU BEAUTÉ CORRECTEUR VISAGE CONCEALER. The legendary staple provides maximum coverage, censoring all of those nasty little imperfections that dare ruin a perfectly good photo opp. $85 at Holt Renfrew.

POUT PERFECT

Like this season’s most talked about entertainer – think twerking and wrecking balls – legions of devotees “can’t stop” raving about EOS SMOOTH SPHERE LIP BALM IN SWEET MINT. Packed with gothe-distance conditioning ingredients including Shea butter, vitamin E and Jojoba oil, the trending all-natural sphere is to cracked and chapped lips what Moët is to a party in need of a reboot. Definitely put a (S)MILEY on our faces. $4.99 at Pharmaprix, other drugstores and mass market retailers.

THE SUPER SIT-DOWN WITH SUPERFOOD SPECIALIST DAVID WOLFE

LO O K T HE PAR T Y

Montreal, get ready for a Diary first on the health and well-being front, as contributing editor SUZANNE WEXLER sits down with celebrated health guru DAVID WOLFE (yes, the Nutribullet guy).

(AKA THE NUTRIBULLET GUY)

BY SUZANNE WEXLER

T

hese days, celebs are obsessed with natural food diets, whether its Gwyneth promoting her latest clean-eating recipes in her cookbook It’s all Good, or Jenna Dewan Tatum (Channing Tatum’s wife) downing Kimberly Snyder’s Glowing Green Smoothie to lose her baby-weight. Indeed, from eating raw to vegan to juicing, A-listers are turning to nature in the hopes of cleansing their skin, their souls and their waistlines. Enter DAVID “AVOCADO” WOLFE, the much-adored spokesperson for the NutriBullet, a $99.99 blender with a whopping 600-watt motor. Wolfe is a leading authority on the natural foods movement, and has authored nine books in the last twenty years on topics like raw foods, superfoods, mushroom hunting, and natural hormone strategies. On the successful NutriBullet infomercial, Wolfe whips up smoothies loaded with spinach, goji berries, and chia seeds, singing the merits of each ingredient along the way. And thanks to his enthusiasm, mass audiences are now swallowing heaps of whirred up kale just like Gwyneth, Jenna, Jessica (Alba) and Fergie. Heck, I’m chugging a leafy mangoberry concoction right now. But, no matter how willing I am to “drink the drink”, the skeptic in me does have a few questions for the bright-eyed, bushy-tailed natural foods expert: How do laypeople navigate the incredibly complex world of natural foods? Does a single green drink really do anything? Just like his smoothies, Wolfe’s answers were an unexpected, delightful blend: From raw foods to superfoods, there are a lot of different diets that you advocate. Is someone supposed to do them all or just pick and choose what’s relevant to them? It’s more pick and choose

doasg3_P102-103_Nutribullet.indd 102

what’s relevant. For example, in Montreal, I’ve been able to inspire a number of mushroom hunters. Then there’s the superfood bit, which is something a lot of athletes really tune into. But how are people supposed to know what they might need, healthwise? In addition to reading relevant books and literature, should they consult a doctor or naturopath? Great question. Some people like the analytical Western data, which is cool. I’m all for it. In that case, they should see a Western trained doctor, or integrative doctor, and get analytical data on their hair for example, or blood work, or hormone levels. It’s really good to get that baseline information. Then some people are like “I’m my own best doctor. I’m my own best nutritionist. I’m going to go with my intuition.” [And so that’s [another] tool that’s available. Do you know about Paul A. Offit? He recently wrote a book called Do you Believe in Magic? The Sense and Nonsense of Alternative Medicine, plus a New York Times Op-Ed challenging the overuse of megavitamins and antioxidants. Yeah. I know who you’re talking about. I thought you might. So he was saying that the overuse of antioxidants might be potentially damaging, and that too much vitamin A and E might cause cancer. He alleges that the natural food industry lacks scientific research and regulation. How do you respond to that? Here’s the thing. We live in a world where alternative medicine has been vilified by mainstream Western medicine. The analytical research that we’d love to do in alternative medicine has been blocked quite strongly by Western prejudices for some time.

Now this is breaking down in recent years. We’re starting to see a little bit more of the type of research that we’d want to have happen. So you think there are merits, say, to being on a 10 percent superfood diet and a 30 percent raw food diet, or do you think people need to go to extremes to see benefits? Well, I think everybody has to do the piece that makes sense to them. If I make a crazy superfood, super herb drink, I think people feel benefits from that immediately. I’ve seen that. So I’m not one of these people that says it has to be all [or nothing] to get any benefit[…]. But what I like to do is to continue to expand the choices of superfoods and organic herbs and organic foods in general. I also [advocate] eating more fresh, raw food. Speaking of superfoods, what’s your relationship to the NutriBullet company? Well, it’s not my company, but I’m a spokesperson and consultant for the company. And I’ve been deeply involved in the development of the recipes and of the product itself. It’s been a runaway success for all of us. I’ve always wanted to be on TV selling blender foods ever since I can remember; since I was 10 years old actually. To me, the NutriBullet is like a dream come true. You really dreamed of selling blenders? Yeah, I had the dream of selling the blender on TV, and the dream of being the guy who gets people healthy with natural food. All of that came true. So you definitely back-up the product? Absolutely. It’s the best. You can’t get anything like it for under $100 in the world.

JITTERY COOK CUSTOMIZES DAVID WOLFE’S BERRY KALE NUTRIBLAST SMOOTHIE • 1/3 cup each blueberries, raspberries • 1 cup coconut water or enough to cover the other ingredients • 2 leaves kale, stem removed, roughly chopped • 1 teaspoon honey or coconut nectar • 2 tablespoons hemp seed (or 1 tablespoon hemp seed oil, or 1 tablespoon olive oil) Combine all ingredients in the following order: kale, berries, seeds, sweetener, coconut water. Make sure to stay below the maximum line. Blend in Nutribullet for 45 seconds. Sprinkle on a little cinnamon. Start sipping right away or carry smoothie with you in the travel cup provided. Makes a single serving.

Picard’s Cabane à Sucre. “It was very soulful because we were in the middle of the woods with two feet of snow, and it was very rustic,” he recounts. He himself has catered a function at the Montreal High Lights Festival and a recent high-profile Ritz-Carlton Montréal Grand Prix event produced in collaboration with McLaren. (For details, see the LIVE THE PARTY section.) But perhaps the most memorable gathering he’s contributed to in his career thus far is Time Magazine’s 75th Anniversary Dinner in New York City. The 1998 affair rounded up over 800 of the then most influential folks in the world – like Bill Gates, Christopher Reeve and Mikhail Gorbachev – and it all took place at none other than Radio City Music Hall. So what did Boulud serve the most powerful people in the world at the time? Lamb Champvalon, a dish that consists of roasted and seasoned lamb chops layered with potatoes, all braised gently until the ingredients become “confis.” Though he described it as something of a peasant dish, Boulud’s country cuisine won over the elite crowd. “It was something that smelled good when you served it,” he recalls, “something that gave them a connection with simplicity, and they loved it. It was a tour de force.” Boulud’s favourite kind of party is one that lets him give back. He’s currently vice-president of the Board of Directors of Citymeals-on-Wheels, a New York City-based organization he’s been involved with since 1999, which delivers meals to the elderly. Each year, Boulud hosts a gala for the organization at his DANIEL restaurant, and guest chefs are invited to take part in preparing the gourmet feast. “To me, [the elderly] are the people who made New York before I got there,” Boulud says gratefully, remembering when he arrived in the Big Apple in 1982 with little more than an idea. “Children and the elderly are the ones who need our help the most.” Whether it’s a fundraiser, a birthday bash or an exclusive dinner, a Bouludworthy party is all about proportion. “A successful party is curating the crowd; having a good DJ, a good bartender and perfect lighting. Surprising people with the unexpected,” he says. After a small pause, he half-jokes, “Then, it’s to have Daniel Boulud cook for you.” If that turns out to be the big surprise, stick around to see what happens.

hen world-class chef DANIEL BOULUD is asked about his native Lyons, France, he describes it as a city where people don’t just love food; they specialize in it. From the pastry chefs to the butchers, ice cream makers and chocolatiers, Lyons has the culinary arts down to a science. “Montreal always reminded me of Lyons because there’s a community of chefs and artisanal food made here,” Boulud tells me in the private dining room inside Maison Boulud, his signature restaurant at the recently refurbished Ritz-Carlton Montréal. “A lot of restaurants might not be very French, but they have a tendency to be very local and soulful.” Opening in spring 2012, the soul of Maison Boulud came down to a balanced combination of the right ingredients, all riffing on nature. The multiple rooms of the restaurant were redecorated using earth tones and cozy materials, like wood and stone, but glassworks and effective plays on light – both natural and artificial – infuse the space with a modern freshness. “We made an effort to make sure that the main element that was going to build this place was quality, while being contemporary and timeless at the same time,” says Boulud. To establish the kitchen’s soul, Boulud recruited executive chef Riccardo Bertolino and sommelière Isabelle Bordeleau, and built solid relationships with homegrown suppliers to create a menu that reflects the region, while remaining true to his DNA. Many of the menu’s items feature Quebec-sourced products – vegetables, lamb and suckling pig – but you’ll also find the legendary DBGB Burger and delicate desserts, like freshly baked madeleines. Boulud hopes you’ll feel right at home. “It’s more casual and the food is very locally driven, but also a bit more international in the composition and thinking,” he explains. Though Boulud has built a small gastronomic empire – with restaurants in New York City, Florida, Toronto, London, Beijing and Singapore – for him, Montreal is a sentimental endeavor. For one, he already knew many chefs and providers in the city, being a regular visitor. Plus, he receives invites to all the best parties, where he gets to hobnob with local celebrities like Guy Laliberté. Boulud thinks Montreal’s partying potential is due in part to its unstable weather. “People have different highs at different times of the year,” he says, referring to a do hosted at Martin

Garnished with a frozen orchid, Boulud’s White Cosmo makes an elegant summer drink (see recipe).

DANIEL BOULUD’S COCKTAIL RECIPES A fan of the bitters, Boulud likes to nurse a good cocktail before a party really gets started. The author of Cocktails and Amuse-Bouches for Her and for Him shared a couple of his own mixologies that are sure to be good warm-ups to the main act.

SUMMER COCKTAIL: WHITE COSMOPOLITAN

4 tbsp. Stolichnaya vodka 2 tbsp. St-Germain elderflower liqueur 1 ½ tbsp. white cranberry juice 1 tbsp. lime juice 1 orchid ice ball* In a shaker, combine liquid ingredients with ice. Shake vigorously and strain into a carafe. Place orchid ice ball in a martini glass. When ready to serve, pour contents of carafe over ice ball. *Orchid ice ball: Place 1 pesticidefree, food-grade orchid in a 2-inchdiameter ice ball mold, fill with filtered water, and freeze.

Warm up winter nights with Boulud’s spicy Smokey Bandit cocktail (see recipe).

WINTER COCKTAIL: SMOKEY BANDIT

Seeing that this is a celebrity-themed edition, it makes perfect sense to introduce the MAKE THE PARTY section with an up-close-and-personal profile of one of the globe’s most admired chefs, DANIEL BOULUD, who, much to our collective delight, opened a branch of his gastronomic fabulous at the Ritz-Carlton Montréal in 2012. Self-described foodie and skilled scribe OLIVIA COLETTE chatted with the master about everything from local produce to party perfecting. Enjoy.

In a shaker, combine liquid ingredients with ice. Shake and strain into a rock glass with a 2-inch square ice cube. Garnish with a thin slice of jalapeño on top of the ice cube. *Simple Syrup: Bring to a boil 1 litre of water with 900 ml of white sugar. Let cool and pour into a clean sealed container. Can be refrigerated for up to 3 weeks. **Jalapeño juice: Remove the stem, then juice the whole pepper with a juice extractor.

BOULUD’S SCOTCH WHISKY Boulud partnered with The Dalmore to create the world’s first bespoke Single Malt Scotch Whisky in April 2013. The Dalmore Selected by Daniel Boulud assembles aged stocks from Muscatel, Madeira and Port wine casks, and is bottled at 44% alcohol by the volume. The body, structure and flavour are designed to perfectly complement Boulud’s cuisine. Look for Boulud’s scotch whisky at any of his NYC restaurants. By 2014, it will be available in select cities outside of New York on limited release.

MAKING THE PARTY is where we ensure that readers and online visitors have all the ammo needed to throw the best, most unforgettable events. And no one has more ammo on the party-throwing front than interiors artist SCOTT YETMAN, as this comprehensive feature by contributing editor SUZANNE WEXLER reveals:

A well-executed pop art theme wowed at the MMFA Pop Art Ball.

ALL STAR ENTERTAINING

WITH INTERIORS ARTIST SCOTT YETMAN BY SUZANNE WEXLER

T

here I was, in the office of Montreal-based, internationally renowned interior designer, SCOTT YETMAN, whose glittering client list has turned him into a bona fide celebrity in his own right. Most recently, he’s created the posh public (and some private) spaces of the Sir George Simpson building and the 1250 Greene Avenue residences. I was dying to ask him about the décor in my living room, but no, it was time to focus. This interview is not about decorating – well, not exactly. Rather, it’s about the art of entertaining, something Scott also happens to be a superstar at – and something many of us can use guidance on, as well.

doasg3_P110-113_ASE.indd 111

This year, Scott hosted his own breathtaking 225-guest wedding to Jean-Michel Lavoie, in his sprawling Knowlton backyard (which still has guests buzzing months later). When not planning his nuptials, he routinely throws epic dinner parties at his Montreal condo, an annual Halloween bash in the country, and cocktail parties galore at his Palm Beach residence. Guests include ex-prime ministers, well-known celebrities, New York magazine editors, and CEOs. “A house that (regularly) has people who come in and enjoy leaves a dimension that a designer cannot put in,” he says. Outside the home, Scott has created stunning décor for numerous high-pro-

file benefit events, including the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts (MMFA) Ball for five years running (taking a break this year), the Snow Ball for the Knowlton Theatre, and the Royal Victoria Hospital Auxiliary Fundraiser. Whether it’s a large affair or a small one, his rules are the same: “First and foremost, if you want to plan a great party, you have to get organized,” he said. And then: “You’re only as good as the people that work around you.” By using top-tier caterers and florists, Scott can then focus on his favourite part of the planning – the theme. What follows are more of his priceless tips, many tweaked for the holiday season.

“YOU’RE ONLY AS GOOD AS THE PEOPLE THAT WORK AROUND YOU.”

THE BENEFIT GALA

Jim Dine’s twin hearts sculpture inspired Yetman’s bold red and black décor at the MMFA Velvet Ball.

It may take effort, but an upscale charity event will reap massive rewards for your favourite cause.

STEP ONE – GET ORGANIZED

112 / DIA RY O F A SO C IA L G AL

The timeline: Pull out a clean binder and start organizing your ideas at least nine months in advance for a large charity gala (250+ guests). Then divvy up responsibilities with fellow committee members. The talent: Decide on your venue and lock it down. After this, you can recruit your caterer, bartender, florist, and music and entertainment (a good caterer can recommend a good florist, etc., if you need leads). You’ll also probably need a technical team to take care of the lighting and sound production. Rentals: After your theme is set (see ‘Step 2’), book a meeting with your rental company to ensure first picks during the busy holiday season. Permits and legalities: Check with your venue and/or lawyer to be sure all your paperwork – from obtaining a Quebec liquor license to registering your charity with the Canada Revenue Agency – is complete.

STEP 2 – INDULGE IN YOUR THEME

A well-executed pop art theme wowed at the MMFA Pop Art Ball.

Go wild: A well-executed theme makes your event memorable. And since most galas are held before the Christmas season, the sky’s the limit in terms of concepts and creativity. For the MMFA Pop Art Ball, Scott hired actors to pose as photographers who bombarded guests upon arrival. Later, their pictures appeared on a massive screen intermixed with celebs from Studio 54. “It was like everyone was famous for fifteen minutes,” he said, echoing Andy Warhol’s famous quote. The budget: Since the objective is to raise money, best to be mindful of the décor budget. As such, Scott recommends tapping into your resources. For the 2009 MMFA Velvet Ball, “everything was basically red and black,” he says, inspired by Jim Dine’s twin hearts sculpture in front of the museum.

STEP 3 – INVITE For galas: Best to send out invitations two to three months in advance. Invitations for corporate tables should go out a month ahead of this. For smaller or new charity events: Send out “Save the Date“ cards six months in advance. (Ditto for a peakseason wedding.)

doasg3_P110-113_ASE.indd 112

13-11-26 01:36

For parties of 20 to 30, themes like Yetman’s YeeHaw Summer BBQ work well.

Whether a private affair at home or a corporate event at an upscale venue, rollicking cocktails and dînatoires of 40 to 120 people are a great way to schmooze while you booze.

STEP 2 – INDULGE IN YOUR THEME Make an impression: For Halloween, Scott created a Jet-Set theme, which included a boarding gate, bartenders dressed as sexy pilots, and food served on little airplane trays. “You really want to make it worthwhile for your guests to come,” he said. Holiday theme: For seasonal cocktails, Scott recommends going with a non-denominational holiday concept over a yuletide extravaganza. Think twinkling lights and beautiful flowers – and far fewer Christmas decorations. Give back: In lieu of gifts, encourage people to make a donation, like toys for the Children’s Hospital. Ultimate ‘Don’t’: Force everyone to drink eggnog or a signature cocktail. Make sure there are alternatives.

STEP 3 – INVITE

Or e-vite!: Email invitations are acceptable nowadays, unless the event is especially formal. Send a month in advance. To avoid junk mail mishaps, follow-up. Must ‘Do’: Mix up the guest list, says Scott. “We invite couples and singles. Our age group ranges from about 25 to 90.”

doasg3_P110-113_ASE.indd 113

“If somebody is going to the trouble of setting their table or decorating their house, hiring a caterer, etc., and you show up dressed like a bum, that’s insulting to the person that invited you.”

GIFTS

STEP ONE – GET ORGANIZED

The timeline: Start planning two to three months in advance, especially during holiday season. The talent: Remember to aim high with your caterer and bartender, and reserve them early. Scott says a good bartender will know how much wine to buy for the cocktail, and an experienced caterer will know industry nuances, such as curbing food portions during the holidays, as many guests only stop by for a drink. Rentals: “When I’m having a party of 70 people in my house, I’m not putting all my Riedel out,” says Scott. Instead, he opts for rentals, dropping off used items the next day. The same rules apply for cocktails outside the home: resist the temptation to go disposable. Please ‘Don’t’: Serve bad wine. Go to the SAQ and sample their $15 recommendations or if over-budget, cut down on your guest list. Please ‘Do’: Consider valet parking, if you’re expecting a large crowd.

M AK E T HE PAR T Y

Yetman’s July wedding to JeanMichel Lavoie still has guests buzzing months later.

“If you don’t know what to bring someone, bring them champagne.” “Don’t bring somebody a décor item as a gift for their house. I’m a designer and if someone brings me, like, kitchen towels with red roosters on them … what’s that about?”

THE INTIMATE DINNER Enjoying a delicious meal at home with beloved friends and relatives can be the best kind of party.

STEP ONE – GET ORGANIZED The timeline: Start organizing your dinner for eight to 30 people about two weeks ahead. During peak-season, invite guests much earlier (see ‘Invite’ section below). Set your boundaries: “I love to cook but twelve people is my limit,” says Scott. So decide what tasks you want to delegate and reserve your caterers, staff and cleaners ASAP. Also, if your dining area cannot accommodate all your guests, go for a cocktail dînatoire. Prepare: Before guests arrive, be sure all dishes are cooked and garnishes ready, so you don’t spend the entire evening in the kitchen. Then, write out clear serving instructions to your helpers.

STEP 2 – TO THEME ... OR NOT

Must ‘Do’: For parties of 20 to 30, Scott says themes like his Yee-Haw Summer BBQ are terrific. Just coordinate the tablecloths, décor and menu and all

“If you go to a party and forget to bring a gift, there’s nothing wrong with sending one afterwards.” “If you’re going to bring flowers, don’t arrive at the door with them so [your host has to] rush and find a vase. Why not send them earlier, so they can put them somewhere?” “Gifts that are really appropriate to bring are anything that’s edible, or useable and elegant. Like, a beautiful scented candle.” will be grand. For Yee-Haw, he even ordered inexpensive cowboy hats online for each guest. Ultimate ‘Don’t’: Rely on a theme for intimate eight to 15 person affairs. Rather, Scott suggests simply dazzling your guests with your best china, your favourite Bordeaux, and your most cherished recipes instead. “To me, it’s sharing that quality of life with your friends that’s really important.” He creates mood through flowers and décor, and, in winter, lays out a posh green and blue tartan tablecloth he made out of Ralph Lauren wool. Add fun: Charades may sound corny, but they can be a blast. Also, during the holidays, a gift exchange with $10.00 to $15.00 presents is fun, too. Must ‘Do’: Top off the night with a dance party (secretly planned on your playlist).

STEP 3 – INVITE

Call: For small groups, calling is the best way to extend the invitation. A month’s notice is ideal during the holidays (two weeks is sufficient the rest of the year). E-vite: For groups larger than 20 an email works, but mark an RSVP date.

SCOTT TALKS GUESTIQUETTE

THANK-YOUS “If you want to be invited back, send a thank you note. Emails are now acceptable too. But send a note if somebody does something exceptional and make sure it’s not just, “Thanks.” [Highlight] what you enjoyed about it.”

PHOTOS “Oh, don’t post Facebook pictures. It’s my house, it’s my party. Start posting Instagram or Pictogram or Facebook and you’re never invited again.”

GUESTS “My rule is I have to like all the people that are at my house. If I have to do an event for PR or whatever, that’s a different type of thing and it’s not in my house. But in my house, the people who pass through my door are all people I want to be there.”

No good party, especially around the holidays, is complete without the right tunes. And who better to talk tunes than the glam party circuit’s darling DJ ABEILLE? Contributing editor SUZANNE WEXLER has the goods.

GETTING HOLIDAY BUZZED WITH DJ ABEILLE ALL THE RIGHT PLAY(S)

114 / DIARY O F A SO C IA L G A L

BY SUZANNE WEXLER

THE PLAYER Talented and gorgeous DJ ABEILLE, Montreal’s go-to special events DJ.

THE BACKGROUND As a teenager, Abeille Gélinas listened to hip-hop artists: A Tribe Called Quest, The Roots, and Nas. She expanded her musical horizons while a VJ at Musique Plus between ‘96 and ‘98. Next was five years of theatre school in L.A., which added another layer of creativity and experience. But upon returning home, the pull of music ultimately prevailed and she tried her hand at DJ-ing. “It was the best decision I ever made,” she says. Thanks to fun and eclectic music picks (and a healthy dollop of charisma that draw crowds to her like bees to honey), Abeille soon carved out a niche for herself as the go-to gal for glam store openings (such as Birks at Dix30) and high-profile special events like Canada Day on Ottawa’s Parliament Hill, the Ferrari after-party for F1, and all the opening gala shows for Juste Pour Rire. On Wednesday nights, she can be found doing her thing at the W Hotel’s Plateau Lounge.

THE DIARY ASSIGNMENT Make two playlists for the holiday season; one for hanging out with family, the other for partying with friends.

THE CHALLENGE “These were hard playlists for me to do,” Abeille admits. “When I sat down to actually do them, I realized what a

doasg3_P114-115_abeille.indd 114

‘live’ person I am. I never prepare anything in advance (for my shows). I get influenced by people, their energy, their look. Coming up with something I would play for myself was hard!”

THE RESULTS Two playlists with different nostalgic elements, both intended to create feel-good seasonal vibes. “You want to feel loved during the holidays,” she said.

FAMILY PLAY For her first playlist, Abeille envisioned cooking and hanging out with her own extended family. “You have Banana Pancakes (by Jack Johnson), which is the cutest song. It’s like raining or snowing and all you want to do is stay inside,” she smiles. Next, she included comforting oldies by Elvis Presley, Frank Sinatra and Ella Fitzgerald. Les Soeurs Boulay add a local twist and endearing dash of folk. “Folk music really works for that time of year,” she says. Finally, there’s Stevie Wonder’s My Cherie Amour. “You can be with your sisters, your boyfriend, or your mother and just be like awwww…!” she says, cheek-to-shoulder.

FRIENDLY PLAY Her second playlist includes funky remixes, which are all about throwing up your arms while hanging out with friends. Upbeat tunes like I Wanna Dance With Somebody by Whitney Houston and 99 Red Balloons by Nena add a nostalgic ‘80s edge: “I didn’t grow up listening to ‘80s music, but my

sisters did. They’d listen to it really loud in their bedrooms, and I just wanted to be cool like them.” (Abeille’s sisters are Noémie, four years her senior, and Mitsou, eight years older). Then there are her ultra-personalized selections: “I’m a Kanye West fan, and had to put a Christmas song in there.” she said of Christmas in Harlem. There’s also Dance Tonight by Lucy Pearl, a hip-hop super-group from the ‘90s. “That song reminds me of going out when dancing on Friday and Saturday nights was the most important thing in life.” For Abeille, dancing is still what it’s all about. She says Dance Apocalyptic by Janelle Monae “makes you want to bounce everywhere,” while “Paris Montréal” by Les Cowboys Fringants, “makes you wanna grab someone’s arm and turn around.” Whether she winds up doing the do-si-do or the moonwalk (or even some mocktwerking), her goal is to shake it up with friends.

THE TAKE-AWAY Alone in her car, Abeille listens to The Weeknd, Edward Sharpe and The Magnetic Zeros, or the latest Daft Punk album. While DJ-ing at a “really dirty party,” (as she affectionately calls it), she’ll play some Major Lazer. But for the snowy holiday season, things are, ironically, much less cool. “There are no “Don’ts” over the holidays. Some people absolutely hate Christmas music; for others, it just makes them feel good. Whatever makes you want to cuddle under the blanket, cook a lot, or have a dance party at home – go for it,” she says.

STARGAZING IN L.A.

P

erched well above the bustling streets of Los Angeles, nestled in the rolling Hollywood Hills, lies the Griffith Observatory, an iconic belvedere for discovering the sprawling, uncharted vistas of the universe. On a clear night, it’s the perfect lookout to admire the shining stars of the heavens above. Yet, most of the stargazing that takes place in LA is of the inward-looking variety. Indeed, you would be hard pressed to spend any significant amount of time in the City of Angels without spotting a few of the countless celebrities that call LA their home. They are omnipresent: frequenting the finest restaurants, indulging in retail therapy at the trendiest boutiques and escaping the chaos at the most luxurious hotels that LA has to offer. And so, if seeing stars (and experiencing a bit of their lifestyle) is what you’re after, this guide will take you to the kinds of haunts where swarms of paparazzi line the entrance, each clamoring for a snapshot of the biggest names in Tinseltown. Enjoy.

EATERIES

Stars really are no different from you and I. Sure, they may have seven or eight figure salaries, gilded statues adorning their nightstands, and millions of admirers following their every move, but they are still subject to the same daily nutritional requirements as the rest of us hoi polloi. Hence, restaurants in LA have always been prime stargazing territory.

doasg3_P118-119_LA.indd 118

Grab a bite at Joan’s on Third, a darling lunch joint fused with a gourmet marketplace, and you’re bound to run into the likes of Christina Aguilera, Nicole Kidman and Diane Kruger. Or rub elbows with Russell Brand, Jessica Alba and Lana Del Rey while waiting in line to order at popular all-day eatery (and health food haven) Urth Caffe. Still, as far as star-studded, midday dining experiences go, the Polo Lounge at the Beverly Hills Hotel is a celeb-spotting hall of famer – the venue-elect for every major interview, business meeting and power player schmoozefest. Be prepared: their signature burger (well worth the splurge) just might come with a side order of Mark Wahlberg or Denzel Washington. Now, that’s what I call a daily special. But, as we all know, it is as day turns to night that the stars become most visible. This too applies to LA’s restaurant scene. So chow down on homemade pasta next to Rihanna and Taylor Swift at Il Ristorante di Giorgio Baldi, a longtime favourite of the Hollywood elite, or take in the breathtaking views of the Pacific alongside Ben Affleck and Matt Damon at the newly relocated Nobu in Malibu (the Miso-Marinated Black Cod and Popcorn Shrimp Tempura are legendary). If American fare is more your speed, score a coveted table at Boa for a dining experience that’s equal parts food and revelry. And don’t let its unassuming façade fool you: A far cry from the traditional steakhouse, its sleek, ultramodern décor and palate-thrilling dishes are what keep the A-listers (and camera-

SLEEPERIES There are a number of reasons why celebrities stay at some of LA’s finest hotels. They may be locals trying to escape the madness of the city, or those recovering from their latest plastic surgery adventure (or misadventure). They may also be East Coast natives whose time in LA is ephemeral: to film a movie or TV show or to meet with industry bigwigs and studio execs. Whatever their reasons for accommodation, they all seem to share a fondness for a small cluster of lodging options. Those who crave the spotlight often choose the Chateau Marmont – the unofficial celebrity clubhouse of LA (recently immortalized as a star in its own right in Sofia Coppola’s feature film Somewhere). Those who prefer to mingle among their own kind favour the legendary Beverly Hills Hotel, the centerpiece around which the city of Beverly Hills was built. The bungalows of the

100-year-old “Pink Palace” were at one time the temporary homes of Marilyn Monroe, Elizabeth Taylor and, more recently, President Obama, The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge William and Catherine, Johnny Depp and Britney Spears. Those who value their privacy check-in to the exclusive Hotel Bel-Air, a quixotic oasis situated on 12 acres of lush greenery. The newly revamped retreat boasts celebrity guests like Oprah, Tom Cruise and Robert DeNiro. Lastly, Shutters on the Beach is the destination of choice for stars with a nostalgic longing for summers on the Cape. The nautically inspired, oceanfront hotel takes rustic luxury to new heights, making it an ideal hideaway for celebrities in desperate need of some R&R. Stars like Brangelina, Julia Roberts and Jennifer Lawrence are consistently drawn to its charm and whimsy.

SHOPPERIES

When in LA, do as the Angelenos do – shop. One of the best ways to explore the city’s eclectic retailscape is by swiping plastic at the boutiques most beloved by celebrities and locals alike. Naturally, this means paying a visit to quirky cult-favourite Kitson or ivy-swathed it-store Fred Segal. And, of course, you can’t go wrong with an outing to Barneys New York. The LA

outpost of the renowned department store carries designer duds from Alaia to Zac Posen. Kim Kardashian, Nicole Richie and Miley Cyrus are but a few of the myriad celebrities who regularly ascend the store’s grand spiral staircase. But if the ultimate retail pilgrimage is what you’re craving, head to Maxfield, a destination boutique that is something like a museum (albeit with masterpieces by Chanel, Hermes and Givenchy instead of Renoir, Picasso and Van Gogh). It is impeccably and uniquely curated with goods – many one-of-a-kind – of yore and of late. In addition to Maxfield’s avant-garde sartorial selection, the store also sells housewares and kitschy tchotchkes with equally unattainable price tags. It’s no wonder the boutique is a mainstay among heavy-hitters like the Olsen twins and Victoria Beckham. And if all else fails, park yourself at any Whole Foods, high-end gym or ritzy beauty salon. You could also retire your dancing shoes in favour of some Nikes and hike the celeb-frequented trails of Runyon Canyon (think Justin Timberlake and Natalie Portman territory). I assure you, it will be far more effective (and far less tacky) than even the most adroit of star-map orienteering. So start working on your best celebrity conversation starters. And they had better be more inspired than “Can I get your autograph?”

Given my day (and ahem, night) job as social columnist for Montreal’s leading English daily, The Montreal Gazette, I have the pleasure and privilege of crossing paths with, and getting to know, some of the city’s most accomplished, and yes, famous residents. One such individual is beloved media personality/author DOMINIQUE BERTRAND, an amazing human and talent who recently penned her first novel (you go girl!). Anyway, given the theme and direction of this edition, it got me thinking: How and where do our homegrown celebs ESCAPE THE PARTY and the rigours of everyday life? Enter Diary contributor OLIVIA COLETTE to the curiosity-satiating rescue, with an in-depth profile of Bertrand and the inside scoop on her favourite escape! A Diary exclusive.

DOING DOWNTIME BY OLIVIA COLLETTE

M

eeting DOMINIQUE BERTRAND for the first time, my initial impression is that she’s as poised and polished as every photo of her suggests. She makes it look so easy, wearing a coral pencil dress adorned with a black rose-shaped brooch, her chestnut hair coiffed in an impeccable French twist. Because we’re here to talk about getaways and recharging the batteries, I ask how she relaxes, fully expecting someone with her natural elegance to favour things like champagne, silk fabrics and rare, algae-based spa treatments. As it turns out, she’s more “comfy pyjamas, books, chocolates, potato chips, and a good movie.” This is a perfect example of Bertrand’s inherent relatability, a trait clearly reflected in her writing. Her first book, Démaquillée (2010), was an autobiography. In it, Bertrand frankly shared her struggles and successes, wiping the proverbial makeup away, as the French title declares. “I lifted the veil on the difficulties I’d experienced in my life,” she says. “The important thing about our difficulties is finding a way to get past them. My book helped a lot of people who had romantic problems, people with mental health issues and single mothers, because I was one myself. That was the book’s primary goal.” Her writing is eloquent and compassionate, but it took a while to work up the nerve to do it. Recalling the eclectic career that’s seen her model, host

doasg3_PXX-XX_bertrand_2.indd 124

numerous radio and TV shows, helm Clin d’œil magazine as editor-in-chief, and act as spokesperson for Maison Monbourquette, an organization that offers counselling to the bereaved, Bertrand admits she may have used her hectic schedule as an excuse to avoid putting pen to paper. “It was all a distraction to help me dodge my fear of failing at writing,” she confesses. When her radio contract wasn’t renewed, she found herself with more time on her hands and a persistent publisher. One autobiography later, an incurable writing bug bit her. She recently published a second tome, this time foraying into fiction. The novel, called Le pot au rose (rough translation: The Discovery), is the story of a woman, Florence, who suspects that her rich husband has been unfaithful, a revelation that threatens her affluent lifestyle and very core of existence. Bertrand describes the main character as a woman who’s afraid to confront her husband and, ultimately, reality. In addition to impressive publications like La Presse, the book was especially well received by those who attended the official launch party at Holt Renfrew in September, with Isabelle Hudon and Isabelle Marcoux lauding it as an intense page-turner. Despite having more time to write, Bertrand’s agenda is still quite full. She and her husband, Jacques Maurice, director of wealth management and senior wealth advisor at ScotiaMcLeod, are involved in a number of

“THE MOST AMAZING THING IS THAT WHEN YOU’RE KNOWN, YOU CAN GIVE TO CHARITY AND YOU CAN MAKE A HUGE DIFFERENCE ON THINGS THAT MATTER.”

organizations like the Lise Watier Foundation, Centraide and the Alzheimer Society of Canada. So when the two need a break, they aim for everything their animated Montreal lifestyle is not. That’s where their coastal Boca Raton abode comes into play. Located in the exquisitely designed Excelsior building, Bertrand and Maurice get wistful when describing their beachfront condo. It’s sprawled over 5,000 square feet indoors, with a 10,000 square-foot terrace that includes a pool. The space’s ample fenestration provides sweeping panoramic ocean views, and it’s covered in marble flooring, coincidentally handcrafted in Canada.

“We were seduced by Boca Raton’s Magnificent Mile,” Maurice says. They’d been looking for a place in this area since 2007, and found their 3-bedroom dream dwelling in 2009. They even bought it "as is” given their affinity for the previous owner’s taste in furnishings. “We were really lucky to find a place we liked, and for it to be furnished,” he adds. “If we would have decorated it ourselves, we would have done it exactly as they did, so we saved ourselves a lot of trouble.” They bought linens and dishware, and added their own decorations and artworks, but all the classically styled furniture remained. The fact that the Boca Raton flat is all on one floor is a plus for Bertrand, who prefers smaller spaces. “I get insecure when I walk into a place, say hello, and no one answers because the place is too big!” she says with a laugh. “It’s true that the condo in Florida is spacious, but if you’re in the living room and I’m in the kitchen, we can still talk.” Maurice has been with ScotiaMcLeod for 38 years, where he manages a team of 17 employees and a financial portfolio of some four billion dollars. Paired with his involvement in charitable organizations, his days are action-packed. In stark contrast to his active Montreal life, in Florida, he lets the tranquil ocean guide his pace. “For me, it’s important to have a break from the routine, to not be needed or called upon,” Maurice explains. “In

Florida, I don’t have a schedule or appointments. I just go with the flow of the day.” For someone as recognizable as Bertrand, Boca Raton affords valued anonymity. Accordingly, it’s here that she dresses casually, takes leisurely bike rides, sleeps in during the morning and naps in the afternoon. “The condo gives us so much freedom,” she says. “It’s as if our bodies become symbiotic with nature.” They try to make it to the Florida haven about six times a year. Most of the time, it’s just the two of them, but for Christmas, the whole family comes together. They’re joined by Maurice’s sons, Louis-Philippe and Guillaume, their daughter Rosemarie and Bertrand’s parents. The gathering is very traditional, with the turkey, the tree, a life-sized Santa Claus effigy, the works. Bertrand, a self-proclaimed Christmas fanatic, jumpstarts the decorating as early as October. This year, they’re upping the ante by inviting many of their Montreal friends for what’s going to be an enormous New Year’s Eve do. It’ll be catered by Alexander Event Catering, Chef Felix Alexander’s award-winning catering company. They’ve already invited 40 to 50 guests, all of whom will be staying nearby for the occasion. The couple tells me they decided to throw the bash so they could catch up with some of the friends they don’t get to see enough of because of conflicting schedules. Both Bertrand and Maurice agree that a good party is down to the good chemistry between the guests. “If we invited them,” Maurice says, “it’s because we know they’ll get along with everyone else!” Of course, it’s up to the hosts to set the tone, and, to that end, the couple has a clear advantage. “We’re lucky,” Bertrand concludes. “We really enjoy spending time with each other; we’re never bored together.” Not that I can imagine these two ever having a dull moment, whatever the setting.

hen covering the social beat, you have the pleasure and privilege of crossing paths with a remarkable mix of people, many of whom do us proud as Canadians. One gang of four that made an indelible impact is The Tenors. I first met the incredibly gifted quartet in 2010, when they performed at the Canadian Olympic Hall of Fame Gala Dinner and Induction Ceremony. While their performance at the Bell Centre was its usual stellar, bringing the audience to its feet, I was even more moved by the homegrown group’s off-stage demeanor. All four – FRASER WALTERS, VICTOR MICALLEF, REMIGIO PEREIRA and CLIFTON MURRAY – were approachable and warm, the kind of guys you wanna hang with, befriend, and yes, ladies, date (they’re even more gorgeous in person). We met up again recently, at the 2012 Ritz-Carlton Montréal’s Centennial Celebration (where they performed with Nikki Yanofsky to mass applause) and, once again, the foursome’s unaffected down-to-earth-ness was inspiring. And then, it struck me. That rare combination of mammoth talent, charisma, chemistry and down-home goodness is the secret to the Tenors’ success. It’s the reason that, in just five short years, the Juno winners have already performed on The Oprah Winfrey Show (with Celine Dion); for Her Majesty The Queen; at the Vancouver Olympics; the 2011 Emmys; NBA, MLB, and NHL All-Star Games; and countless other notable venues and events the world over, where they’ve shared the stage with the likes of Sarah McLachlan, Neil Young, Paul Anka, Justin Bieber, Paul McCartney, Brian McK-

night, David Foster, and Natalie Cole. But really, who could resist them? Definitely not this smitten social gal. And so, I can’t tell you how thrilled I am that they agreed to be profiled in this special celebrity edition, and to contribute to this ESCAPE THE PARTY section. Truly an honour. Enjoy. The life of a tenor is action-packed, with touring, travel and so many professional appearances and obligations. How do you recharge and refuel? We love to spend time with family and loved ones (get-togethers). Massages and chiropractic therapy are helpful too. Getting back to nature (quiet peaceful isolation with a great view of the ocean or mountains) always

inspires, as does discovering the four corners of the earth through culinary exploration. There’s also much to be said for exercise. We love CrossFit training, kayaking, fishing, yoga, hiking, paddle boarding, surfing, skateboarding, mountain biking, backcountry skiing, workout DVDs (like Insanity or P90X) and jogging in different cities (a terrific way to see the sights). Reading, songwriting, playing piano/guitar and watching live music are other great forms of relaxation that we enjoy. Are there specific travel destinations, retreats and/or spas that aid in this recharging/refueling? The most important time for us to recharge and refuel is with loved ones. However, we also love to head somewhere warm and isolated. We especially enjoy visiting Nimmo Bay on the coast of BC. It’s a great place to get back to nature and go fishing in the mountains and rivers by helicopter. There’s great food, massage, a spa, all in a tranquil setting. Another favourite destination is Hawaii. Just a six-hour flight from Vancouver, and you’re in paradise. Hawaii has great snorkeling, boating, hikes and whales. There are also amazing spa retreats. It’s a place to get away and completely unwind. As for the Bahamas, we’re partial to Grand Isle Resort and Spa. With its white sand beach, crystal blue waves, friendly locals, great food and isolated settings, it’s the dream getaway. We also love the Langham Hotel in London, Banff Fairmont Hotel and Shangri-la Hotels all over the world. Are there particular eateries, shopping destinations or gyms that hold a special place in your hearts? In Vancouver, we love Granville Island, The Seawall,

Hawksworth Restaurant, Sun Sui Wah for dim sum, Guu for Japanese tapas, Caffè Artigiano (best coffee in town), Akbar’s Own for authentic Indian food, Vij’s Restaurant for Indian fusion, La Quercia Italian, and the Steve Nash Fitness World and Sports Club for workouts. When in LA, it’s all about Gratitude Café, Tere’s for the best ceviche, Captain Kidd’s Fish Market, Picca Peru for tapas, and Kaya Sushi. In NYC, favourites are Cafeteria, Sushi Samba, and the Palm (especially for chocolate cake). In Toronto, we head to Ravi Soups, Farmhouse Tavern, Enoteca Sociale, Canoe and Ruby Watchco. I have to ask: Any Montreal spots that you love to “escape” to? On the restaurant front, we’re partial to Schwartz’s Deli for smoked meat, Jano Restaurant for Portuguese fare (a must after a show), Toqué! and Le Queue de Cheval for steak. We also love catching performances at Place des Arts, visiting Notre Dame Cathedral, walking Old Montreal’s cobblestone streets and perusing the shops and restaurants, sharing a laugh at the Just for Laughs Festival, and enjoying the annual Montreal Jazz Fest. It brings together so many great artists, including Remigio’s favourite, Mariza, the Portuguese Fado singer.

It brings me great joy to initiate this INSPIRE THE PARTY section (a place where we pay homage to the differencemakers in our midst) with CAIA HAGEL’S in-depth profile of Lise Watier. The master entrepreneur – and woman of prodigious integrity and spirit – believed she could change the world. And did.

QUEEN OF HEARTS

INS PIR E T HE PAR T Y

LISE WATIER

W

hen Lise Watier recently stepped down from forty years at the helm of her glamorous ship – the internationally acclaimed cosmetics brand of her namesake – she sniffled between tears, “I am the Céline Dion of business.” The tears set in after her staff’s testimonials, every one of them heartfelt and adoring, which she heard just before stepping into the press conference. The comparison was meant as an allusion to Dion’s panache for public emotional expression. But those who witnessed this poignant farewell couldn’t help but draw larger parallels between these two stellar women: their humble beginnings, their delivery of a distinctive brand of feminine passion and, undoubtedly, their fame, fortune and overall fabulousness. Of her own path, Watier remembers, “My parents and I lived in an apartment in Hochelaga-Maisonneuve. I didn’t have a backyard, I didn’t have a bicycle; I had very little in the material sense but I had a lot of love. My parents were amazing people, they always encouraged me and said there’s nothing I couldn’t accomplish – they said dream the impossible and that’s what I did.” So later, when the nuns who were her schoolteachers offered her potential career choices that were less than ordinary, Watier insisted on the extraordinary. She told them: “I want to be an entrepreneur and conquer the world!” Not surprisingly, this is exactly what came to pass. As a young woman, Watier was spotted and recruited to appear on local variety television shows which – because of her passionate belief in feminine beauty – garnered her a huge female following. She opened the Lise Watier Institute soon after, where she would teach women how to beautify themselves – not to be objects of beauty but to be subjects of confidence who could better navigate their feminine power and translate this into opportunity. It was an organic move from here to creating the beauty products that

doasg3_P130-131_watier.indd 131

her followers sought, and for which she already had the DNA, from her experiments in homemade makeup as a child. Her conviction that beauty is emotion, and her ability to infect her peers with this understanding, is what she feels was her great advantage as a female entrepreneur. “No man could know what I know about this – that makeup is a means for emotional expression in women, and that if you know how to use it, so much is possible,” says Watier about her unique angle on self-décor – the magic bullet that helped her convert what might have been thought of as a frivolous undertaking into a personal success that benefited a platoon of women searching for just this kind of empowerment. “It’s like our [Lise Watier] scent Neiges,” continues Watier, describing emotional beauty in motion. “It’s a soft fragrance but it’s very long-lasting – the idea is that while wearing this combination of softness and strength, which is a very powerful emotion, women live the reality of it.” Another trailblazing element of Watier’s success has been her devotion to innovation. Her motto for commercial relevance is, “If we are not different, why be there?” and this has spurred her team on a relentless hunt for rare ingredients with a view to creating superior products that are both affordable and dramatically effective. The latest Labrador Tea Age Control Supreme anti-aging cream, for example, required the formation of a whole unit of scientists and the invention of a new extraction method. By appealing to the basic instinct in all women to look and feel good, Watier has exalted an aspect of feminism that has been largely neglected by the women’s rights movement. Reflecting now, forty years into this prosperous experiment, she says, “Deep inside us, no matter who we are, we all want to feel attractive, loved and desired. Lipstick for me is a symbol of this. Some women don’t need lipstick, of course, but if it makes you feel more secure and more confident because it is a brand

“DEEP INSIDE US, NO MATTER WHO WE ARE, WE ALL WANT TO FEEL ATTRACTIVE, LOVED AND DESIRED. LIPSTICK FOR ME IS A SYMBOL OF THIS.”

of feminine power – then what I do is provide the tools for women to empower their feminine status. When you feel powerful as a woman, your mind feels different, and this difference has a quality all of its own, complementary to a man’s strength. I am an absolute believer in the unique flair that women bring to every aspect of society. I call it La Force de la Douceur: The Power of Gentleness, the natural power that a woman exudes when she’s self-assured.” Watier’s description of her role as founder of her cosmetics stronghold is therefore: “Devotion to inventing the highest quality products that will make people feel good.” This career trajectory could be a destination for many entrepreneurs, but for Watier it is only the beginning. The fact that empowering women with the tools of their own beauty has allowed her to

build a considerable voice and fortune means she can now turn her desire to improve women’s lives towards what touches her most of all – helping disadvantaged women get out of abusive, itinerant and powerless positions. “Growing up with nuns had a deep effect on me,” remembers Watier. “It taught me to understand the power of compassion. Every woman who is not financially and psychologically independent might be suffering, and every woman who is suffering might have dependent children who are suffering, too. These are the women and children that you don’t see – they are hidden in their misery. They need help.” Watier relates this longing to be the helper right back to her origins in the makeup trade: “I have never thought of myself as an ordinary businesswoman; I have always thought of myself as a missionary, a person who spreads the good word and extends large hands to the suffering of others.” Now that she has stepped down as the head of Lise Watier Cosmetics, Watier is turning all her passion to the Lise Watier Foundation, which has already made considerable inroads in transforming the opportunities for women in need. With the Lise Watier Pavilion in Montreal, hundreds of women have been saved from the streets and rehabilitated into financial independence. For women nationally, all the revenues from two Lise Watier lip products, Sparkle of Hope lip gloss and Rose Tendresse lipstick, whose profits exceed $600,000 to date, go to the Foundation, which siphons them out to educational, shelter and rehabilitation organizations for girls and women across Canada. “This makes me so happy,” says the stellar Queen of Hearts of her power to give, a power that was recently honoured with an Order of Canada award in recognition of her many gifts to Canadians. “By the end of my stay on this earth I hope that I will have made a difference to girls and women,” beams Watier – and even if she’s too humble to see it herself, we know that she already has.

he may be small in stature, but NIKKI YANOFSKY lacks no height when it comes to character. We’ve all heard her sing and know she has rhythm and soul to spare, but what’s also unique about this petite wonder is that her heart is as colossal as her voice, having informed her active and indefatigable support of countless charities through the years, from the Montreal Children’s Hospital and Make a Wish Foundation to Musicounts, where she is currently its youngest ambassador to date. Just nineteen years young, the package is complete with a graceful maturity and buoyant wisdom beyond her years that some of us can only wish to grow into. In a recent enlightening and entertaining interview, I had the opportunity to learn more about Nikki the artist, the activist and the role model, and now understand better than ever why Jennifer and the Diary team cherry-picked her as their first spokesperson for The Social Sisters Foundation, coming soon. Nikki is truly a beacon of talent, ambition, compassion and poise. World, meet Nikki; despite having already achieved groundbreaking success in myriad ways, she’s just warming up. How do you hope to impact people through your music? I hope that my music makes people happy. Whether it impacts someone in a big way or just puts a smile on their face, that’s sufficient for me. I love music so much I just want to share that passion with the world in some capacity :). You’re the youngest social ambassador for Musicounts, an institution that supports the integration of music in education. Can you elaborate a bit about

doasg3_P132_nikki.indd 132

this experience and why this cause is so important to you? I think that it’s crazy that schools are cutting music classes, and funding for instruments and equipment. I understand budget constraints, but music is such a huge part of artistic growth, which can carry into other aspects of life. Musicounts is such an important cause because it brings those classes back and reintegrates music back into education. Tell me about your other social initiatives. What causes strike you the most? What do you hope to accomplish through your active social engagement? Usually causes that have to do with children or animals strike me the most. I think it’s because those are the most helpless beings. I like to lend my voice to those that can’t really be heard as loudly as they should be. Can you talk to me about your new album? How do you differentiate it from other music you’ve produced? This album is different than my last, but it’s a very logical next step. It’s definitely a new sound for me but I feel like I finally have MY sound, a distinct style that really represents who I am. It mixes jazz and pop. In fact, I’m calling the genre jazz-hop. The album’s called Little Secret and is produced by Rob Kleiner and Dan Cinelli, with Quincy Jones on board as executive producer. We’re all very proud of it! Through the years, you have become a role model by virtue of your talent but also because of your sincerity and kindness. What responsibility do you feel? I think being called a role model is a big compliment but the good thing about it is that I’m really just being me. So the responsibility that comes is really

IT’S IMPORTANT TO REALLY STAY TRUE TO YOURSELF AND MAINTAIN YOUR INTEGRITY. THICK SKIN IS A MUST IN THIS BUSINESS! just staying true to who I am, which is easy because I don’t know how to be anyone else :). If you were granted the wish to meet any musician of your choice, who would it be? What would you ask or tell them? Ella Fitzgerald. Unfortunately, I will never be granted that wish, but I would tell her that she’s the reason I got into music. She taught me so much through her music. I wouldn’t be where I am now if I hadn’t been exposed to her talent. She really influenced and inspired me in a way that not many other musicians have. I would probably ask her for some tips and tricks! When you put music aside, who else is Nikki? (What are your hobbies, dreams, passions etc.?) Besides music, I love animals, reading, movies and am really into fashion. I love selfexpression and art. Honestly though, I think that who we are as people is really something that we continue to figure out each day. I am constantly learning new things about myself and those around me.

What advice would you give to other aspiring creatives (writers, artists, musicians)? It’s a very difficult industry to penetrate; do you have any guidance/words of wisdom? It is a very tough industry. There are always going to be people rooting for your failure, as harsh as that may sound. You have to find the right people and stick with them. I have a great team around me that keeps me grounded and focused. It’s important to really stay true to yourself and maintain your integrity. Thick skin is a must in this business! What do you like most about your chosen profession? I love that I get to do what I love for a living! My favourite aspect of what I do though, is writing and recording. It’s so much fun and so relaxing for me. I also really have fun making music videos and learning dances :). If you weren’t born in this century, when would you have liked to live? I would have loved to be alive in the 60s. That was my favourite era for music. When are you completely satisfied with your work? Never, satisfaction is the death of ambition! What do you consider the most important day in your career thus far? I think a big turning point for my career was the 2010 Olympics but honestly, I think so many things led up to that moment so it’s hard to pinpoint a day. Every opportunity must be met with hard work. Where do you hope to be in 10 years? I always find that the hardest question to answer! I don’t know where I’ll be in 10 years … but I hope to be happy. What are your three core values? Trust/love, balance and family.

With every new edition, the Diary team seeks to broaden the creative landscape. With this next feature, I think we’ve broken new ground: Art, as you’ve never seen it before!

Pre-production planning plays a pivotal role.

THE PAINTED PERSONALITY ARTIST/PHOTOGRAPHER KRISTIAN VERONO TURNS FLASH AND SPLASH ON GENEVIÈVE BORNE BY JENN CAMPBELL

THE ARTIST

I’ve known KRISTIAN VERONO for several years now, and have watched him use multifarious platforms to express his creativity. Indeed, the capable and energetic go-getter has enjoyed immense success as a stylist and fashion designer. More recently, however, he turned his talent and attention to the worlds of painting and photography, with a particular focus on portraiture, in a series titled My Verono. While he has always aimed for fresh and innovative modes of expression, he has outdone himself with this latest artistic journey, simultaneously spawning an ever-burgeoning global audience of admirers and devotees (of which I am proud to be a part).

THE TECHNIQUE/PROCESS Once a subject for portraiture is selected (a vital and time-consuming step

doasg3_P134-135_painted_pers_2.indd 134

in the preliminary development, as subjects play a pivotal role in the creative process, and are a major source of inspiration to Verono), both subject and artist work together to decide on the paint splashes that best express the mood of the subject, and overall direction of the portrait. In this instance – a portrait created especially for our all-star edition – both Verono and celebrity subject GENEVIÈVE BORNE (see below) chose to convert Verono’s traditional white image with bold red, blue and yellow splashes (see accompanying photos) into an all-black canvass with white accents. Next, a date for shooting is arranged, which, more often than not, takes place at Verono’s professional studio in a farmhouse just outside Montreal. Then, once on scene, the nude (or partially nude) subject-turned-canvas is sprayed completely white and posed against a matching background. Fi-

nally, what others have astutely called the magic – aka the paint splashes – are thrown onto the subject by Verono himself (with exuberance, emotion and intention), and then, if need be, manipulated in accordance with the initial vision in post-production. As for the results of this unique creative collaboration? Well, it’s pretty safe to say, they speak for themselves. Onlookers can not only admire the subtle beauty of Borne’s silhouette against the (virtually) seamless background, but can also feel the energy and movement of the innovative process in a powerful and palpable way, adding much to the usual static and motionless nature of traditional portraiture.

THE MUSE As noted in the above, one of the most important and laborious parts of this process is finding that comple-

mentary subject, because, again, he/she becomes a core ingredient. A subject has to not only believe in the collaboration but, quite literally, become invested in it. Accordingly, Verono is often drawn to fellow artists and creatives partial to self-expression and enriching the creative vernacular themselves. And so, he could not have found a better partner-in-innovation than beloved Quebec personality/ host Borne, who, throughout her rich career, has used many platforms to express her own artistry. Early on, she made her mark in front of the camera as a successful model (most notably as the face of Cover Girl’s Quebec campaign, Simplement Moi, and later in her career, while working as a VJ at MusiquePlus). Speaking of which, she also achieved great acclaim in this capacity as host/interviewer, where her engaging interview style was a formidable asset during sit-downs with

legendary artists, including Madonna, The Rolling Stones, David Bowie and Phil Collins. This skill set continued to serve her well as she expanded her television and radio presence on popular programs like TVA’s Dans ma Caméra, Télé-Québec’s Belle et Bum, and a series for France’s Musimax’s French Connection, broadcast here. Eventually she took self-expression to another level, pursuing a love of photography, which led to: a collaboration with French language travel and adventure channel Évasion (where she documents her travel to distant and exotic destinations); the publication of her own book of photographs, Dans ma Caméra; and a shoot for pop star Roch Voisine’s website. More recently, a love of music, inspired in childhood by her musician brother, prompted a grown-up pursuit of piano playing. When not hosting, snapping, publishing and hitting the keyboards,

doasg3_P134-135_painted_pers_2.indd 135

the indefatigable artist also works as a consultant for Paul McCartney’s Quest Management, contributes to La Presse newspaper’s popular iPad app, and indulges an enduring relationship with personal style, routinely gracing the fashion and social pages in the edgiest of creations (Denis Gagnon, Saint Laurent, Marc Jacobs and Karl Lagerfeld are favourites). Clearly, Verono chose well; an artistic collaboration at its best.

“VERONO IS OFTEN DRAWN TO FELLOW ARTISTS AND CREATIVES PARTIAL TO SELF-EXPRESSION AND ENRICHING THE CREATIVE VERNACULAR THEMSELVES.”

I’ve been accused in the past of crafting my own vernacular, often sprinkling columns and copy with new words and lingo. In fact, my dear friend, mentor and former biggest boss, the ever-witty ALAN ALLNUTT – current senior vicepresident, prairie region, Postmedia Networks – coined his own description of all this wordplay: Jenn-ese. And so, the Diary team and I thought it a hoot – and exercise in originality – to share some of the new terms we’ve come up with over the last year and a half’s journey. The birth of Diaryese? A social gal can dream.

Before we bid adieu until next season’s VOL. 4 (hot theme already in the works), there is no better farewell than five minutes with the country’s reigning king of entertainment BEN MULRONEY, the charismatic anchor of ETALK, Canada’s number one entertainment show.

FIVE MINUTES WITH CANADA’S KING OF ENTERTAINMENT BEN MULRONEY BY JENN CAMPBELL

B

en, you’ve covered every glittering ruby carpet out there, from the Junos on the home front, to the Oscars and Golden Globes. Can you give us two top moments? Joking with George Clooney that he missed out on another Oscar nomination by declining to play June CarterCash in Walk The Line, and having Angelina Jolie end the Oscar broadcast with me (bonus points, because she skipped over Ryan Seacrest!). There’s no talking red carpets without talking fashion. Any standouts there? Hits and/or misses? Who can forget Angelina’s thigh-high slit? On the men’s side, a classic tux, with only one or two modern tweaks, is all it takes to stand out. Speaking of style, HELLO! Canada named you one of the country’s best dressed in 2009. Who are your go-to designers? Haight & Ashbury, Strellson, Tiger Of Sweden and a new made-tomeasure suit company out of Toronto, called Made. Clearly, workouts figure into the king of entertainment’s daily agenda! Care to share any stay slim & stunning tips? With three kids and a busy schedule, it’s not as easy to plug regular workouts into my schedule. So I have to remain flexible and be satisfied with any sort of forward progress. I have a shake for breakfast and do my best not to snack during the day. I train with the founder of Hidden Capabilities, Christian Helm, who is helping me improve my flexibility. I try to run 3-4 times a week and I have Insanity, P90X and T25 on DVD for when I don’t have time to leave the house. I try to do one of those things at least 4-5 times a week. Oh, and anytime there is a Tough Mudder Challenge in Toronto, I am there. When it comes to sit-downs, you’ve met influencers galore. Who’s the coolest person (famous or not) you’ve ever interviewed and why? Tony Bennett. Need I say more? In addition to ETALK, you host ETALK 20, a successful two-hour weekly radio show on CHUM, and have also penned

doasg3_P144-145_mulroney.indd 145

a column for the Toronto Sun. Do you have a medium of choice? TV is my home, but in the coming years, I anticipate working in new and different aspects of TV, specifically the documentary side. I look forward to letting a story breathe and grow over 90 minutes, something impossible to do in a fast-paced entertainment news show. In 2010, you covered the Vancouver Olympic Winter Games. Is there a favourite Olympic memory? Walking around downtown Vancouver at night during the games. You could see, feel and hear our national pride, and I remember thinking: “This must be what Americans feel like almost every day.” It’s been said you like to “mix things up” on the career front. Any big plans in the works? Time will tell, but I’ve got a lot of fun things I’d like to do – whether or not I actually pull them off is another story altogether. In addition to all the career fabu, you’re also a charitable dude, lending support to numerous nonprofits, including UNICEF Canada, where you were appointed national ambassador in 2006. Where are you lending your voice and support these days? WaterCan, a Canadian charity focused on the global water crisis, as well as various hospital and medical charities here in Toronto. What’s the best party you’ve ever attended? Why? My wedding, for the most obvious of reasons: happiest day of my life and greatest prize I have ever won. Are there any women you can’t say no to (hint: mama Mila, wife Jess or daughter Isabel Veronica)? Yes. And bingo. Even an energizing Benny has to recharge. How does Ben Mulroney timeout and reboot? Sleep, PVR, Netflix and sleep. What’s your favourite Montreal-based luxury lifestyle magazine (rhetorical question)? : ) That’s it folks. Cheers to 2014.
