VOLUME 7 - JULY 2015

We’re feeling those Picnic Vibes! Summer is made for dining al fresco (a fancy word for “outside”). Whether you’re simply sitting on a park bench during your lunch break or going full tilt with parasols and croquet, we’ve got you covered with the perfect eats to pack in your picnic basket. Enjoy the sunshine and a hunk of something savory!

THE CHEESE TRY ME WITH DI BRUNO BROS. SPICY FAVA BEANS AND MIKE’S HOT HONEY!

Alta Badia A FLAVORFUL, SAVORY, MOUNTAIN CHEESE. SMOOTH AND NUTTY, WITH A HINT OF RUSTICITY. Alta Badia (AL-ta bah-DEE-ah) is produced by a local cooperative in the heavily German-influenced, mountainous region of Northern Italy. This lovely cow’s milk wheel is created in a similar method as neighboring Switzerland’s Gruyere and would be happily at home on your sandwich or cheese board.

TOP IT OFF

CONDIMENTS SO GOOD, YOU’LL EAT THEM WITH A SPOON Crown your burgers and dogs with these kingly condiments. The story behind Sir Kensington’s is one of intrigue, royalty, lost recipes, and ingredient simplicity. More importantly, the man created some darn fine ketchups, mustards, and mayos.

THE CULINARY DISCOVERY

THE MEAT

GETTIN’ HOT WITH YOUR HONEY

MEET THE MEAT THAT’S GOT IT ALL

Made with wildflower honey harvested in New York and New Jersey and infused with chilies, we love Mike’s Hot Honey on cheese, pizza, cocktails, ice cream, and more! Get sweet on this spicy treat, sent to us from Brooklyn, with love.

Smoking Goose’s aptly named The Kitchen Sink is a coarse blend of shoulder, heart, liver, and belly, generously spiced with espelette pepper, yellow mustard, and crushed chilies. Certified organic with no added nitrates, this sausage is handcrafted from happy pigs raised naturally and humanely on independent farms in Indiana and neighboring states. This is nose-to-tail charcuterie at its finest! Ready to eat cold or toss on the grill for some char marks.

OUR 6 FAVORITE PHILLY PICNIC DESTINATIONS

1. THE AZALEA GARDEN

2. LIBERTY LANDS PARK

3. JAPANESE GARDENS

Kelly Drive & Fairmount Ave.

913 - 961 North 3rd Street

Lansdowne Dr. & Horticultural Dr.

After you run up the Art Museum steps Rocky-style, catch your breath and explore the beautiful four acres of pretty fields and flowers behind the building. Also check out Boathouse Row and The Fairmount Waterworks.

Once an urban eyesore, this reclaimed space is now home to a community garden, a children’s playground, and more. The park was created and is maintained by residents in the surrounding neighborhood.

Fairmount Park is freaking huge so, to avoid getting lost, set out for one of the park’s more exact destinations — the Shofuso Japanese House and Garden.

Discuss the flavor profile of dense and velvety Camembert Normandie like you would discuss the nuances of any work of art.

Make your picnic ultra-hip by throwing in the best American cheese around, Pleasant Ridge Reserve. It’s this season’s hottest picnic accessory.

4. RACE STREET PIER

5. RITTENHOUSE SQUARE

6. WASHINGTON SQUARE

Race Street & N. Columbus Blvd.

18th Street & Walnut Street

7th Street & Walnut Street (pictured above)

Perfect for when you tire of wandering around Old City. Sit on the lawn and watch boats cruise the Delaware River. Or lounge upon a park bench, stare at New Jersey, and contemplate the meaning of life.

The best place to devour the goods you got from our 18th and Chestnut location! A popular destination for tourists and locals alike, this historic park is great for picnicking and people watching. Plus, it’s crazy close to pretty much everything else you want to see in Center City.

A few blocks from our Franklin location on 9th and Sansom, this pretty park has plenty of grass on which to spread your blanket. Plus a fountain, trees, a couple of historical markers, and lots of cute dogs playing with frisbees! What more could you want?

A classy park deserves a classy cheese. We recommend Marin Triple Crème Brie with Truffles and a loaf of rustic bread.

Go native with a local cheese. We suggest the tart and savory Evalon Select, topped with a blob of our Fig and Acacia Honey Jam.

Snack old school in the old city — grab a hunk of Montgomery’s Farmhouse Cheddar from England, green apples, and pepper jelly. The British are coming... to your picnic!
