At 2,200 acres, Freshkills Park will be almost three times the size of Central Park and the largest park developed in New York City in over 100 years. The park (890 ha)is planned on a reclamation area occupied by landfills and abandoned industrial buildings The park is defined interweaving of different environments through a process of recolonization able to set up a variety of stratified ecosystems through: a distribution network for water (threads) areas of protected habitat for special crops (islands) permeable surfaces governing the erosion and transformation of the land (mats). The equipment and collective structures, of various kinds, are strategically placed according to the arrangement of the different ecosystems. The evolution of the park is planned in several phases: recovery of the natural original infrastructure and adaptation.
