Dickinson State University is a regional comprehensive institution within the North Dakota University System, whose primary role is to contribute to intellectual, social, economic, and cultural development, especially to Southwestern North Dakota. The University’s mission is to provide high-quality, accessible programs; to promote excellence in teaching and learning; to support scholarly and creative activities; and to provide service relevant to the economy, health, and quality of life for the citizens of the State of North Dakota.

Flag Plaza In recognition and celebration of the heritage of our diverse student body, DSU constructed a Flag Plaza and Walk of Pride in 2002. The Flag Plaza features flags from the home countries and tribes of our current DSU students. The Walk of Pride, with its benches and paving stones, honors former DSU personnel and provides a restful spot to enjoy the beauty of campus.

The historic DSU campus is situated on a hilltop in the city of Dickinson, North Dakota, giving it the nickname “College on the Hill.” Located near the rugged Badlands and Theodore Roosevelt National Park, Dickinson offers an array of amenities and recreational opportunities. Students can hike, camp, fish, and experience the wide-open skies and beauty of western North Dakota. Dickinson State Normal School was established in 1916 by a constitutional amendment approved by North Dakota voters. Classes began in 1918 with a two-year program designed to train elementary and secondary school teachers. Over 100 students attended those first classes, which were held at Dickinson High School, as the newly established University had not yet begun construction. In 1931, four-year degrees were offered for the first time under the school’s new name: Dickinson State Teachers College. In recognition of the institution’s broadened curriculum, Dickinson State Teachers College became Dickinson State College in 1963. University status was granted to the school in 1987. Dickinson State University began to offer baccalaureate programs in cooperation with NDUS regional associate degree institutions in 1998. In the fall of 2003, DSU began to offer online courses, making it possible for the institution to extend their programs globally. Today, the University offers three master’s degree programs, 37 bachelor’s degree programs, 16 associate degree programs, 18 certificate programs, and five certificate of completion programs. Courses are offered in Dickinson, Bismarck, Williston, and online.

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE Welcome to Dickinson State University! We are excited to have you here. We hope you are equally excited to be here. Forty-two years ago I was in your shoes as a new student at Dickinson State. I remember those first few days as exciting and a bit terrifying. Don’t worry about the scary part. That is natural, but it will go away soon. Hopefully the exciting part will not fade. Dickinson State is a small school with a full set of opportunities for students. That means there will be plenty of challenges and lots of fun for you in your days here. Please take advantage of those opportunities. Some of them involve your coursework. You will find that DSU faculty care deeply about your success. Take full advantage of their willingness to help you with your studies, both inside and outside the classroom. But there are also many exciting DSU opportunities outside classes. Every club and activity at DSU is looking for new participants, so you should be welcomed with open arms. If you have been active in an activity before DSU, by all means allow DSU to benefit from your experience and expertise. But don’t feel like prior experience is always necessary. In my time at DSU, I was on the golf team, I had lead roles in college theater productions, and I was a Student Senate officer. I had never done those things before I got to DSU. [Actually, I had run for Student Senate offices before DSU, but I never actually won an election until I got to DSU.] There are many ways to grow at DSU. If something seems interesting to you, give it a try! Of course, you will want to reserve time for your studies. After all, your main job here is to earn the credits you need to graduate. But do more than that. Your college years are precious. Do everything you can to fill them with good experiences. Let us know how we can help. I will close with a saying we like around here. It is a fun saying for us, because it kind of makes sense, but it also does not completely make sense, especially to non-Blue Hawks. When you get comfortable with this little slogan, you will know you are DSU blue and grey, through and through. Hawks are up!

Stephen D. Easton, President
