'The ^ k ip p ei and 1 Who, me ? I’m Cody, ship’s mascot; that’s my picture at the top of the page. I’m really more than just the ship’s mascot; I’m the real boss around here. Yes, I’ve let Lieutenant Bradley, the Executive Officer, the Division Officer, and the like run the show pretty much, but all the time I’ve been right there to see that everything goes smoothly. I can tell you quite a bit about this unit since it started back in July 1943. For instance, take a look at some of the fellows that have been through here. Four hundred fifty—not a lot compared with some V-12 units, but average. And all good fellows too! The men I’ve trained are scattered all over the world now and all doing a good job. Of these 450 men I’ve had in training here, 127 have gone to pre-flight and flight training; 88 have gone to upper level specialty schools; 76 have gone to midshipman schools; 76 to NROTC schools; 21 to other V-12 units for further training; 4 have been sent to Supply Corps schools; 2 to Construction Corps schools; and one of my men has gone into Theological training; not many will forget “Deacon” Kirkbridge. Of course, as in all V-12 units, some men have been transferred to V-6, but they are doing their job there, too, and I’m proud of ’em. One of my hardest jobs here has been in doctrinating the boys into liking this place. I’ll have to admit I haven’t been completely successful there, but after a while a fellow gets used to hiking the “Murmansk Run” to class, leaning at a 45 degree angle into the wind. Another of my tough assignments was getting this unit organized back in the sum mer of ’43. Lieutenant Bradley came aboard in June along with Lieutenant Commander Johnson, our first doctor, and under my able direction started things under way. Our first yeoman, Chief Sather, came the 15th and the, first Executive Officer, Lieutenant (jg) Gorton, the 17th. When our first trainees came, July first on the dot, we ran into some trouble. You see, the trainees arrived ahead of both mattresses and the clothing. Well, I scurried around to Presi dent Scott and a few other notables and man aged to scrape up some college mattresses. A few of the lucky slept on mattresses that first week, the rest on folded blankets—and
Saw St m all wore “civies.” Yessiree, the boy3 really took a hand and made this a lively unit. Under the able direction of Joe Gerlach, the boys whipped together football, basketball, and track teams. The football squad battled to a first place tie that year with Minot; the basketball team bounced to a regional championship by winning six out of seven games, and the track team participated in three meets. The next season (’44-’45) my boys fought to a three way tie in football and again took the basketball championship. The fellows did other things, too. Things like the musical they put on at the Dickinson Theatre to rally support for a bond drive. The show ran for two days. And then in the spring of ’44 the men staged a boxing tournament which was open to the public— and very successful, I might add. The men have also participated in Armistice day rallys, college stage productions, and mem orial services. In the early part of ’45, when the college newspaper folded up for want of a printer, some of the boys got together and started a mimeograph ship news sheet, which they appropriately named the “Prairie Breeze.” The men who have really made this unit click during these first two years have been the ship’s company; our skipper, Lieutenant Bradley; our executive officers, Lieutenants Gorton and Highlen: medical officers, Lieu tenant Commander Johnson and Lieutenant Hoffman. Incidentally, Commader Johnson’s son, Ernie, was stationed under me for a year before being sent to pre-flight. Then there are the many athletic spe cialists who have worked under me. Joyce and Magee were first — they’re both (jg) Lieutenants now. Then Ajax, and Carroll (now a jg), Jivelekian, Budnick, Wilder, and Knotek (just recently made a Chief). The1 yeomen, Chiefs Sather and Gabel; the phar macists mates, Bugge, Miles (now a jg), Smart, Gigler, and Willcox, and storekeepers Courson, Shula, Grometer (now a jg), Bolinger, and Carlstrom. Seaman Gag assisted the yeomen. Yep, all these and all the trainees and a lot of hard work have gone to make this a successful unit through these two years. Men may come and men may go; but me, well, I’ll have to stay here and see that this unit keeps right on functioning properly ’till we’ve got this war won.

Pres. Charles E. Scott To A ll Present and Former D ST C V-12 Trainees, G R E E T IN G S! Over two years ago Lieutenant Bradley and Dr. Johnson reported on this Campus for duty. July 1st we saw the completion of two years of V-12 work. Our relations have been cordial. The V-12 staff have been men of fine caliber and professional training and cooperatively disposed. W e have enjoyed working with them in the administration of the V-12 program. In the meantime several hundred V-12 trainees have come and gone. They have come from many sections of the country. They represented a wide range of academic, social and fam ily backgrounds. While many of them undoubtedly had reasons for being disappointed at being sent “ aboard at D ST C when they first arrived, they have uniformly adjusted themselves to their assignment and very generally have shown a fine attitude and a deep sense of appreciation. W e are proud to have had a part in the N avy V-12 College Training program. It has increased our respect of and appreciation for the United States Navy. W e have sent many fine young men on for more specialized training, and many of them are now serving aboard various types of fleet units, and at continental and foreign shore stations. W e are proud of those young men; and we shall be equally proud to have had a part in the preparation of those of you ivho will yet earn your commissions. M ay the Victory sign be upon you all and on all your efforts! Charles

’43-’44 Squad
1943 -1 9 4 4 Boasting probably the best all-around de fensive and floorplay team in Savage history, this quintet also maintained a 44.9 point average per game. Led by Captain Strankman, guard, who in Coach Gerlach’s words, “Ran the boys on the floor”, they won six of their seven games thus ranking as top collegiate cage squad in the state. The three boys who did most of the scoring were Strankman, O’Keefe, and Sperline. Round ing out the “first seven”, who did most of , the playing, were “Bambi” Harms, Ferger, Vince Bonora, and D. Young, defensive ace. Of these, three were named on the allstate team. They were Strankman, O’Keefe, and Harms; Strankman for his all-around floor play, O’Keefe for his work under the baskets, and Harms for his deadliness in shooting when “ON”. Helping Coach Gerlach with the squad was Warren Ajax Sp(A)lc, one-time Gopher great.
1944 -1 9 4 9 With a small but speedy team behind him, Gerlach again won the inter-collegiate basketball crown of North Dakota. Led by co-captains Ernest Johnson and Joe Hicks, the Savages had a remarkable season in which they compiled an average of 51 points a game as compared to the oppositions’ 34. Their only loss was to the Valley City quintet by a margin of 4 points. The Savages capitalized on their fast break and steady ball handling on the offensive side and always played a cool, aggressive defensive game. In one of the most outstanding games the Savages tangled with the powerful N. D. A. C. Bison in a game which should have been closely contested. Grabbing an early lead, the Savages came through to a decisive 58-31 victory. The Bison had previously shellacked the Valley City squad, which was the only team to drop the Savages. ’44-’45 Squad
^TootltaU 1943 The 1943 pigskin season saw an almost completely Navy squad representing DSTC on the gridiron. The lone exception was civilian Ottmar, rugged wingman. Using the single wing with no shift, the Savages made very good use of “Pile Driving” Sam Zahnle’s ability to hit the center and the swift ness of tailback Ferris on off-tackle plays. They lost two games, one a 7-0 loss to Minot, while Concordia tallied on long passes for a 26-14 win. The Savages, however, trimmed Minot 12-7 in a return game. Standouts in the forward wall were previously mentioned Ottmar, Sturgeon at tackle, and center Bob Young, who was also heavy weight boxing champion. This squad averaged about 190 pounds per man, the heaviest being Sockoloff, 221 pound tackle. Also in the forward wall making openings for ball packers were Smith, Heddin, and Gaylen at guards and “Big Boy” Loete and Regensburger at ends. Completing the back field were Brase at quarterback and Sperline at wing back.
’44 Squad
1944 Forming a nucleus around former high school stars coming from the West Coast, Coach Gerlach manned his second Navy football team, which finished as co-champions of the state. Playing only four games throughout the season, the Blue and Gray won one, lost one, and tied two; the identical records of the other two V-12 schools, Valley City and Minot. Utilizing the single wing to the fullest extent, Gerlach sent his light but speedy backs on wide end sweeps, using the spinner and reverses effectively. The team never once had its full strength due to injuries which were numerous throughout the backfield and line. Lacking size and experience, the squad had great team spirit and aggressiveness, which they showed during the season. The Savages placed four men on the North Dakota All-State; Ernest Johnson, halfback; Captain Joe Widney, fullback; Joe Hicks, end; and Robert Hyman, center.

Three meets were held for the track squad. They split with Minot and came out on the short end of a triangular meet at Valley City. Never theless, they did have some excitement when Christopherson smashed the college car. There were four main workhorses for this cinderpath squad. Tug Neville worked in the sprints, hurdles, and broad-jump; top hurdles man was Bambi Harms, who also high-jumped; Higgins scored in the sprints and B. J.; Phil O’Neill did most of his work in the javelin and the B. J.
