The 1946-47 basketball season saw the Dickinson Savages playing one of the most successful seasons in the school’s history, chalking up an impressive record of 19 wins and 6 defeats. Tops among their accomplishments, the Savages, coached by H . J. Wienbergen, shared first place honors in the North Dakota Intercollegiate Conference with the Mayville Comets. In conference play the Savages won 8 and lost 2 contests. The Dickinson boys took consolation honors at the University of North Dakota Invitational Tournament during the Christmas holidays, losing to the strong Minot Beavers in the opening round and going on to turn back bids by Mayville and Wahpeton. This year the Savages played their first season in the newly organized Dakota-Montana Conference and took second place, with only Spearfish Teachers College topping them. For individual honors, Ray Beaver was selected as a member of the “All-Conference” team while Bud Ripley and Bud Ottmar received honorable mention in the poll conducted among the college coaches. For the first time in Coach Wienbergen’s coaching career, a serious accident occurred to one of his teams. On a trip to the eastern part of the state one of the school cars went out of control on the slippery highway and Mike Cuskelly, starting forward, was seriously injured. Other boys in the car suffered minor cuts and bruises. The Junior Varsity, college reserves, handed in a good season’s record too, playing the cream of the area’s independent teams and losing to three of them, avenging the scores in return games. Two other defeats were at the hands of the Minot State Teachers College reserves.

Sixes figured into every football score that the Savages handed in for the 1946 season. One of the teams in every contest scored six points. To begin their schedule, the Savages played host to the strong Yellow Jackets from the Black Hills Teachers of Spearfish, South Dakota, and lost, 2 to 6. A week later the Dickinson squad journeyed to Ellendale and played sixty minutes in a driving rain to lose 6 to 0 when a Savage fumble was recovered in the air by an alert Dustie who ran 40 yards to score the only points of the day. Next, a determined crew of warriors traveled to Rapid City to engage the ever-powerful School of Mines’ Miners. Playing on a beautiful, moonlit night the Savages outplayed the South Dakota club from start to finish and emerged with a 19 to 6 victory. On October 19, the Savages capped the Homecoming festivities by meeting the Valley City Vikings on the local gridiron and lost a well-played contest to their heavier foes, 6 to 19. Traveling to Minot a week later the Blue and Gray suffered their worst defeat at the hands of Minot College, 6 to 25. Minot is coached this year for the first season by a former student and football player under H . J. Wienberger, DSTC Athletic Director. To end their season, the Savages met the Wahpeton Wildcats under the lights of the Dickinson Athletic Field and turned back the speedy eastern club with a resounding claim to the conference title, the two teams being tied for the honor up to the playing of the Dickinson game. BASKETBALL The 1946-47 basketball season saw the Model High Papooses, clad in their new gold and maroon colors, book the most ambitious schedule in the school’s history. Coach Donald Fish, college senior, had five lettermen around whom to build his squad—Ed Kostelecky, Ed Jablonsky, A1 Sadowsky, Ray Sadowsky, and Mike Marczuk. During the second semester, Gilbert Miller, a letterman transfer student from New England played with the squad. The best game of the regular season was when the Bowman Bulldogs came to the local floor with a perfect record and went home from a stunning 40-27 upset. In the Tenth District Tournament, played on the Dickinson State Teachers College floor the Papooses won their first-round game by downing one of the toumey favorites, Halliday, 25 to 24. The second round saw the boys go down to a humiliating 33 to 12 defeat at the hands of Hebron. In their last game the honor of the Maroon and Gold rose to new heights when the Papooses played one of their most brilliant games only to go down to a one point defeat at the hands of Beach, 20 to 19, leaving the boys in fourth place of the eight teams in the meet. Captain Eddie Kostelecky was elected by all the teams in the tournament as one of the ten best players in the district, making this the second year that he was voted to that honor. During the season the Papooses won seven contests and lost twelve.

Back Row: L. Smith—Assistant Coach, U . Ficek, E. Jablonsky, W . Eggers, R. Kovash, R. Baar, R. Larson, and J. Freeman—Coach. Front Row: R. Sadowsky, A. Sadowsky, M. Marczuk, R. Kubas, C. Marczuk, E. Kostelecky, and L. Kovash.

FOOTBALL Coach Jimmie Freeman, Model High football mentor, had to pit his strategy against two opponents every time he scheduled a game, the other team and the weather man. O ut of seven games scheduled last fall, Freeman’s boys managed to come out with a two-two-three summary: they won two, their conference rivals won two, and the weather man won three. The Papooses began their season in a flurry of snow and touchdowns as they turned back a driving team from Assumption Abbey 33 to 6. The next victim of the Blue and Gray were the Bantams from Belfield who held the local boys to a one touchdown victory on a very cold, uncomfortable day. The score was 19 to 12 in favor of the Model boys. New Salem, led by their speedster, Ray Conitz, who scored 25 points, took the Papooses into camp by the score of 58 to 20. The thrill of the day in this contest was provided by Ray Sadowsky, Model quarterback who caught a kickoff on his own 10 yard line and raced through the whole New Salem team to score a touchdown. The final game saw the Model Warriors go down to a 38 to 14 defeat before the heavy boys from Glen Ullin. Glen Ullin became the conference champions a week later by virtue of a win over their closest rivals, New Salem. Boys who received their letters for football for the season are: Kubas, Carl and Mike Marczuk, Ray and Alfred Sadowsky, Ed Kostelecky, Ray and Laudie Kovash, Ulric Ficek, and Ed Jablonsky.
