1951 FOOTBALl HIGHLIGHTS Weakened by graduations and enlistments in the armed forces after the 1950 football season, D S TC ’ s outlook for the 1951 season didn’ t look too bright. In Coach Weinbergen’ s own words, " A t the beginning, I figured w e would be able to call it a successful season if we won one gam e.” This probably helped more than hindered the Savages because no one expected them to do too much and until the final conference game with Jamestown on Homecoming, there was little or no tension or pressure on the players. H owever, the Savages exceeded a ll expectations and for the first time in the football history o f DSTC, pushed their way to the top in the North Dakota In ter-collegiate conference. Compiling a fiv e won (one game fo rfeited ) and none lost average in conference play the Savages shared the title o f Champions with V a lle y C ity which also completed its season un defeated in conference play. Although V a lle y C ity had the same won-lost record, 5—0, they won two o f their games by forfeit where the Dickinson team won only one by forfeit, so the Savages fee l that, theoretically, at lea st, they are Champs in the NDIC. In the season opener, the Savages journeyed to Spearfish where they went down in defeat 20—0. L ed by Radigan, who scored tw ice in the first half, the Spearfish team proved to be too big and tough for the Dickin son eleven. Tw o touchdowns, ca lled back for Dickinson, could have been the breaks that Spearfish needed to win. In the first quarter Beaudoin plucked a Spearfish fumble out of the air and ran 50 yards for a TD . Later in the game, Engelhardt grabbed another Spearfish fumble and scampered over the goal line. However, both plays were recalled by the o ffic ia ls . Coach Harry Weinbergen
In the second game at Bismarck, the conference opener for Dickinson, the Savages came from behind to down Bismarck Junior c o lle g e 19—6. Bismarck jumped into a 6—0 lead in the first quarter when Hummel com pleted a pass to one o f his teammates in the end zone. L a te in the second period Engelhardt passed to Beaudoin who raced 30 yards for the first Dickinson score. Tw o minutes later, Engelhardt again passed, this time to K reidn ger in the end zone for the second Savage TD . Anderson booted the extra point and the Savages led 13—6 at half-time. In the third period, Beaudoin passed to Engelhardt for the last touchdown. Captain John Groll led a much improved Savage defense and hopes o f lo ca l fans went up a notch.

On a muddy field in E llen dale, the follow ing week, the Savages squ eezed by a big Dusty team 13—6. Th e Savages scored first early in the second period when Engelhardt passed to Tom Gratz who scampered the rest of the w ay to score. Anderson kicked the extra point. On the next play, E llen dale came right back as R a tzla ff rambled 76 yards for a TD . C ollin s blocked the attempted conversion and the Savages s till led. The Savages clinched the game in the fourth period as Tom Gratz intercepted a Dusty pass and ran 25 yards for the second D ickinson score. Th e first home game scheduled was forfeited to the Savages when Bottineau was unable to field a team. Reaching the peak o f their season ’ s performance in the second half o f their first home game, the Savages scored four times w hile holding Minot scoreless to defeat the B eavers 27—0. The first half ended in a scoreless tie. The first counter came in the third period when Beaudoin plunged over for the TD . Shortly after wards, Tom Gratz exploded through center for the second score. T h e next TD came in the fourth period as Beaudoin intercepted a Minot pass and carried it into the end zone. Th e final counter came when Beaudoin passed to Engelhardt who carried it over the goal line. Don Anderson kicked the three extra points'. A fter this game, championship fever began to run rampant in Dickinson.
Adam Gratz
In the final conference tilt, the Savages had to come from behind to win their Homecoming game from Jamestown in the last few seconds in a thrilling finish that le ft most o f the spectators and the majority o f the players breathless and also gave the Savages a Homecoming victory and a share of the conference championship. On the opening kickoff, Becker, Jamestown’ s speedy half back, picked up the ball on his own three yard line, fumbled it, picked it up again, cut for the sideline and raced 97 yards for the first score of the game. Seeing the championship slipping from their grasp, the Savages defense played inspired ball during the remainder of the game, holding Jamestown to a minus yardage after the opening play. The rest o f the first half was a battle of defenses with neither team able to present a formidable scoring threat.

In the third period the Savages drove to the Jamestown 5 where Engelhardt passed into the end zone. Th e pass was batted down by a Jamestown defender right into the arms o f Tom Gratz. Ander son m issed the all-important con version and the score was knotted at 6—6. In the fourth quarter, Dickinson drove from their ow r 20 to Jamestown’ s 7 where the Jimmies stiffened and a penalty set the Savages back to the 12. Then, on third down, with Engelhardt holding on the 18, and but 14 seconds left in the game, Anderson booted the ba ll through the goal posts for a three-pointer that won the Home coming game, put the Savages at the top of the NDIC and gave Coach Weinbergen, clothes and all, a shower he had been w aiting 27 years to get.

In the final home game, the Savages played an unbeaten Rapid C ity eleven and lost 6—0, in 10 degree weather on a frozen field. Midway in the first period Dickinson missed a golden opportunity to score with a fumble on Rapid C ity ’ s 4 on first down with goal to go. As the first quarter ended, Rapid C ity was again in the hole as Parker downed Wright on his two yard line on an attempted punt return. Early in the third quarter Dickinson again fought its way to Rapid C ity ’ s 9 where they lost the ball on downs. L a te in the fourth quarter Rapid C ity ’ s B la ck w ell scored the games lone TD on a cutback over tackle and a 53 yard run.

In the season’ s last game an inspired B illin gs team upset a strongly favored Dickinson team 6—0 in 70 degree weather in B illin g s . It was the first game the Savages had played with the temperature above freezing. For 59 minutes the two teams played scoreless ball but with le s s than a minute to play, B illin g s ’ Kozeluh fin ally scored on a play that some Savages still say was stopped short o f the goal line. SAVAGE BASKETBALL 1951-52 Starting the season in ty p ica l Savage fashion, the S avages won their firs t game on a tip-in by Bob Krogh in the fin al secon d s, 61—59, against Eastern Normal of B illin g s , H ow ever, the next night, the Eastern Normal Y e llo w ja c k e ts came back strongly to dump the S avages 54—68. It w as the first tim e the Savages had been beaten on their home court in nearly tw o yea rs. T h e fo llo w in g night against R ock y Mountain c o lle g e the lo c a ls came through with a 60—53 win.
of B illin g s ,
In a three-game s e rie s in B illin g s , the Savages hit an early slump — dropping a ll three, two to Eastern Normal by sc o res o f 66—65 and 53—49, and to R ocky Mountain c o lle g e , 61—51, Coming back to their home floor, the lo c a ls seem ed to be rejuvenated p layin g two gam es in two nights, they thumped Bottineau 92—50 and edged out Minot 59—56. On a two game road trip to V a lle y C ity and M a y ville , the lo c a l team ran over V a lle y C ity 63—55 and w as edged by M ayville 78—74 even though Larry O tterson poured in 28 points.
BOB KROGH
T ra v e lin g to Spearfish in a non-conference tilt, the S avages downed the South Dakota T e a c h e rs 62—60 in an overtim e game. T h e next game against Bism arck proved to be one o f the best the lo c a ls p layed a ll season. T h e M ystics, who were lead in g the con teren ce w ith four wins and no lo s s e s , were humbled to tne tune of 86—60 with L arry Otterson again throwing in 28 points. T h is win put D ickinson in a tie for the con feren ce lead. P la y in g Spearfish in the next home game, the Savages came through with a 79—70 win. Bottineau w as the fo e for the next conference tilt and the lo c a ls again dumped the F o res te rs , this time 72—45. In the next game which w as at home, the Savages defeated a battlin g V a lle y C ity team 64—62 to go into a tie for firs t p lace in con ference standings. T ra v e lin g to E lle n d a le the lo c a ls defeated the D usties 65—64 in an overtim e game and moved into undisputed first p la c e in the con ference race with a 7—1 record. But a slump hit in the next con test w h ile Jamestown w as red-hot and the S avages w ere whipped 85—60 on their own floor. It was the second home lo s s o f the season for the S avages.
B IL L S T R A N S K Y
N eeding a win at Minot to hold their top spot in the con feren ce the Savages w ere unable to come through as the B ea vers held them to a lo w ly 41 points w h ile scorin g 63. A fte r the lo s s to Minot, the lo c a ls needed a win at Bism arck to stay in the con feren ce ra ce. E ven though Captain “ Satch” K rie g turned in one of the best games o f his career and the entire team p layed spirited b all, the fin al score read 70—66 in Bism arck’ s favor. T h e lo s s at Bism arck seem ed to take the heart out of the lo c a ls as they went on to lo s e the rem aining four games of their sch ed u le, lo s in g to E llen d ale here 59—61, Wapheton here 70—65 and to Rapid C ity there 7 8 -52 and 8 6 -6 4 . Throughout the season the Savages scorin g load w as carried by Larry Otterson, T e d d y U ecker, and Captain K rieg , who were nicknamed “ D ickinson’ s B ig T h re e ” .

MR. IV E R GRINDSTUEN P rin c ip a l o f Model High School
Model High has a place o f prominence not only in the institution but also in the Slope Area. Much credit, as was reported in a previous annual, is due to Mr. Grindstuen, who has been princi pal o f Model High since 1936.
In addition he is Supervisor o f Secondary Teachers Training and
Chairman o f Education and has spent his entire life in educational work in North Dakota, after he received his B. A . from Luther C o lleg e and his M. A. from the U niversity of Wisconsin. A s a teacher and administrator for over forty years in Rhame, Bowman, B e lfield , Beach and Model High, he is w ell acquainted with the problems in the Slope Area and with this experience he has led Model to high degrees o f su ccess and importance. Under his capable supervision the high school enlarged not only its curriculum but also its extra-curricular a ctiv itie s including, F ootb all, Basketball, Track, P ep Squad, G .A .A ., High School G irls ’ and B o y s’ Chorus, Band, F .T .A ., F .H .A ., and Forum. Under his guidance Smoke Signals was also organized and the boys and girls are given a chance to participate in G irls’ and B o y s ’ State, A Rotary V ocation al Trip, Contests in declamation and music, and the D .A .R . award in C itizenship.
