PRAIRIE S M O K E
75 VEARS O F CHANGE Seventy-five years ago only grama g r a ss, grey sage, and buckbrush met the dustfilled eyes of the "trailer" as he rode onto the slope behind the bellowing and tired herds of longhorns. Only five years before, the brave Sioux had counted their last coup at the Bighorn, but they too had vanished. Even the lordly beast of the plains, the bison, was in his dying hour, waiting but to leave his bleached bones to leach into the gumbos and the sc o r ia s . Only a thin ribbon of new ly-laid steel, unrusted from the dews of that sum m er or the frosts of that winter broke the virgin landscape stretching horizon to horizon, untouched, untamed, .unmanned, unknown. Even then the country was changing. Changing! Changing! A short span of tim e is 75 y e a r s . The m ere span of one man's life . Now we must relegate those memorable days and the staunch and stalwart men of that tim e to m em ory. These tim es are only a theme, but it w ill be a theme that springs into a hearty, surging life and not one that dies slow ly and terrifyingly, like the last roll of the last Northern bison herd. The spirit w ill live on, making, changing, creating, succeeding, even fa il ing only to resu cceed . The sp irit that coursed in the veins of the gone Sioux w arriors and the hardy trail riders (unaccepted as they both w ere) w ill reign as long as the word W est itse lf continues to liv e . Without this spirit p o ssessed by our forebears, this country would have remained as it was: untouched, untamed, unmanned, unloved. We of the Prairie Smoke Staff therefore se le c t "The Men of ’81" as our theme in tribute to those without whose liv es Signal Butte might have remained only a lair for badgers and rattlesn ak es. We a lso do it as a tribute to a ll those who have followed the pioneers and who have yet to follow them in making this w estern spirit of determination and this common w estern heritage not only a memory but a way of lif e .
DEDICATION We resp ectfu lly dedicate this 1957 edition of the P ra irie Smoke to M r. John C. Thom pson who a s a tea c h e r has been a never failing so u rc e of guidance, truth, and insp iratio n to a ll those with whom he has asso ciated .

A TRIBUTE As sile n c e may reveal the feelin g of a storm Or m usic im itate the sounding sea, A m irror of our mind r e fle c ts as it deform s The vain ex p ressio n s of a m em ory. T his man we chose a s counselor and friend, Who lived and liv e s within each soul he knew, Has shaped us m ore than we can comprehend Though none perceived that gratitude was due. Though glam our shuns the realm of education The words he spoke w ere portions of h is soul And could not find a better occupation But at a p rice extinguishing his goal. Let others w rite a life of fascination Ignoring heaven's purpose for our birth, But let them not perpetuate sensation As a ll the e s s e n s e of our stay on earth. The soul that liv e s in grea test inspiration Is not inspired by the fam e it holds, But rather by a se n se of new creation Presented in the product that it m olds. By a D . S . T . C . Student

fORÂŁftâ‚ŹN The boys who really make things hop ound here are the foremen. Of course u hear some gripes about the foremen of Ls spread, but when the chips are really wn we gotta hand it to em . They's got oig load on their shoulders, but they ally keep their fences up. By the time hands has worked under them for four ar, we've really shucked onto a gunnyck full of learnin. Then green as a mil colt we're ready to drift out and set a shack of our own near Hungry Man's tte or Gumbo Creek or some other allengin' place like that.

BUCKflROOS
It looks from the above pitcher like a ll the buckaroos from the S r ., J r ., Soph., and F r . ranches has got together at the Pemmican -Saloon (Oops misprint) Rack. Naturally that plum-tuckered out fella on the left is a S r . Man since they is always plum-tuckered out after four years of hard leather, alkali dust and gallons of black c o ffee. Naturally, a ls o , the next fellow looks like a Jr. Man sin ce he is just about, but not quite so tuckered out like the S r. Man. That happy wrangler is , I gu ess, a Soph, rider cuz they is the only ones thet can be so happy. The feller on the right is a F r . boy. He's the one that's had it . It can be explained that there wasn't no wim men folk in the above pitcher cause naturally they just warn't th ere.

As can be jedged from the above pitcher, our sports have done changed somewhat. But the a-dditlon of pigskin kickin, ball bouncin, foot racin and a lot of other ea sier way to break-ottr-seeks - oops, I mean put some meat on them bones of ourn still hasn't changed us Savages one bit. Us Savages is still the sam e wrangly, grizzly, half-saw ed-off, cactus chewin, blizzard faced, coyote hide, onery, buffalo-scratchin Dakota hombres like way back in ’81. Course we got som e modern conveniencesfootball greens and hardwood courts to plow them stubble-faced opponents from our rival spreads into, but that don't stop us none. To see all the dust we raised this year jist flip this here page.

October was a m ost eventful month for everybody. The climax, of course, was HOMECOMING. That took place on October 26 and 27. But many events o c c u rre d before that. On October 1, for example, we elected a new Social C om m issioner. Do you re m e m b e r how the F re sh m e n looked? Im ag ine those g irls trying to be dignified with the le tte rs ”M T " tra c e d on th eir foreheads in lipstick! As OLDTIMER would say, "They was lots of branded he ifers around the place them days". That s o r t of thing seem ed never ending. "Emptyheaded g irls and green-beanie topped boys w ere e v e ry w here. They seem ed to outnumber everybody else. The Sophs thought they did when the tug-of-w ar came on October 17. When the F r e s h ie s took hold of that rope they dragged back the Sophs like a bulldozer pulling against a team of oxen. But the Sophs got th eir revenge that night. T here w ere other events before Homecoming. We elected c h e e rle a d e rs , of course. And we amended the Constitution to add another officer in the Student Asso c ia tion--that of T r e a s u r e r . Irvin Nodland, our un official Poet L aureate was chosen for that unpoetic post. After Homecoming there was Halloween, and we took a journey "Down Below"--as the signs rea d in every c la s s ro o m . But "Inferno" proved to be a ra th e r pleasant place, with good music and very courteous "IMPS".

THE CEREMONIAL One of the highlights of Homecoming, especially for students in residence, is the solemn Indian cerem onial, by which a uthor ity is tr a n s f e r r e d from the old Chief and P rincess to the new. An im p re ss iv e company of men and wo men, d r e s s e d in authentic Indian garb, dance on the stage in May Hall auditorium to the slow rhythm of the tom -tom . The ceremony re a c h e s its high point when the new chief lifts the feathered crown from the head of his p re d e c e s so r and places it on his own. The old chief does not r e s is t; neither does he help. He stands in dignity

There was a record enrollment of a l m ost 450 students at the beginning of the winter quarter, December 2. But the big event during the month of December was Spiritual Emphasis Week. The theme for this year was "So You're a Christian." The guest for the week was the Rev. John W. Hildebrand from Duluth, M innesota. Dormitory sessio n s as w ell as student panels, held throughout the week, gave us an opportunity to discu ss problem s arising in our religious life . The week's activities ended with the Thursday morning convoca tion.

One of the outstanding events of January was the v isit to the campus of over 75 Dickinson business men. Administration, faculty, and students greeted them in the Auditorium; the student spokesman was Duane Roeh rick, president of the Student A sso ciation. Student m usicians played and sang to them . During the morning the guests visited c la ss e s, and at noon they lunched with the faculty. They stayed on until late in the afternoon, learning how College business is conducted, whence the students come, and how the College benefits the com m unity.

On January 10, word reached the College that one of our beloved form er teachers had died the day b efore. M iss Amanda E . Hendrickson came to D .S .T .C . in 1933 as a teacher of English, and she rem ained here as an active faculty member until 1952. She stayed as College nurse for another year. In 1947 she had been named "outstanding woman educator" by the Adm inistrative Council oi women in Education. A new College nurse took up her duties this month. She is M iss Marilyn Boom, who replaces M rs. Betty Smith. In addition to her college duties, she is clinical instructor (Continued on Page 108)

in the School of Practical Nursing in St. Joseph's H ospital. Form erly she was on the staff of General Hospital, M inneapolis. In the course of the month, two lecturers gave us interesting and informative speeches. On January 16, D r. Joseph M. Stokes empha sized the need for A m erica to have friends and supporters throughout the world, and showed that our own prosperity depends on im ports of goods and on foreign m arkets. The other, D r. Ralph E . N ichols, spoke on a subject of no greater importance, perhaps, but of more direct concern to u s . He explained the importance of skill in listening, not only to students but to persons in the p rofession s and in industry. Long after his v isit, his m essage was being earnestly d is cu ssed . Among the notable social events this month was the pledging cerem ony of Alpha Sigma Alpha on January 21, the Lambda Delta Lambda dinner m eeting on January 24, and the International Relations Club party on January 31. The feller flittin' around the old horse corral is one of them "young bucks" from Model Hi. That's where they larn to rope, r a sse l, ride, and wrangle before they're knee high to a coyote pup. Cowgirls also find it great fun living at the MHS outfit along the bottoms near Young Braves' C reek.
DEDICATION
The students of Model High School affectionately dedicate their section of the 1956-57 Prairie Smoke to their English teacher, M iss Florence Tucker. M iss Tucker is a native of North Dakota, having been bom in Dunn C enter. She has had an interesting and exciting teaching career which has led her from the rural schools of Dunn and M ercer counties to the halls of Model High School. In between she spent some tim e teaching the upper grades in Juanita, North Dakota. During the Second World War she served in the Women's Army Corps and spent som e tim e in Germany when that country was being occupied by the United States Armed F o r c e s . Upon completion of her career in the WAC M iss Tucker returned to DSTC to complete work on her Bachelor of Science degree. Her very commendable college record won for her in 1953 a position on the DSTC staff, and, fortunately for Model High students, she was assigned to teach all the Model High English c la s s e s . Since assum ing her present duties, M iss Tucker has been attending the Colorado State College of Education during summer sessio n s and w ill complete work toward her M aster of A rts degree during the coming sum m er. M iss Tucker is a member of Delta Kappa Gamma, an honorary organization of women educators. Currently she is vice-p resid en t of the local chapter. She is also a member of Pi Lamda Theta, an honorary education sorority. The A ssociation for Student Teaching finds her to be a valuable m ember inasmuch as she is a member of the AST Executive Board for the tr i-sta te area of North Dakota, South Dakota, and Minnesota, and is past Secretary-T reasurer of the North Dakota AST organization. As her students we have always appreciated M iss Tucker's cheerful disposition and her great loyalty to Model High School. Her w illingness to listen to our personal problems and her untiring efforts to be helpful to us in the classroom make her one of our favorite teach ers. It is with extrem ely great pleasure that we dedicate our section of the 1956-57 Prairie Smoke to M iss Florence T ucker. —
