"CO U N TRY GRAVEYARD BLUES" The evenin bell is ringin in the church, A line of cows com es mooin from the pasture, A farm -hand, all tired out, goes w alkin home. A n leaves me standin here alone an thinkin. The tw ilight fades; the world soon disappears; A n d everything is quiet as the grave. Except ye hears a beetle circle by O r som eplace ya kin hear a sheepbell ring. . . . T h e y's lotsa big shots livin in th world— A ll high an mighty, thinks th ey's goin places. A n turns their noses up at guys like these. But what the deuce? T hey got no room ta grin. They brags about their grandads and their family, W h a t they says goes, they brags; they wears swell clothes; T heir dam es is fashion-plates, an m ighty grand; T he y'll get what these folks got, and nothing more. Swell tom bstones and brass plates stuck up in church D o n 't do no good; ya w on't be there ta hear The preacher lyin bout how good ya was. A n you w on't hear the organ an the choir. Y a c a n 't bring people back from death ta life W ith fancy urns and lifelike statue heads; Funeral honors falls fla t for the dead A n soft-soap d o n 't sm ooth nothin for a corpse. . . . H is head lies here upon the ground A s if it were upon his m other's lap; The world outside this town knew nothing of him, He had no education, none at all. A n d when we saw him he was alw ays sad. But he was good to everyone, and kind; A n d he was honest; God rewarded him. He cried when he saw other people suffer, He was too poor to help in other ways; Y e t God made everyone he knew his friend, T h a t was good enough for him ; his needs were small. W h y should we give him any other praise. N o r shall we speak a g a in st him, though, of course He had his faults, just like the rest of us, For now he is at peace; he is with God. — By Dr. Kenton V ickery

President O. A. DeLong speaks at the dedication ceremony during the official opening of the Student Union at homecoming.

D S C 's new Student Union, opened in the fall of 1963, serves as the center of college social life. The Ballroom, which has been changed at tim es into a G reen wich V illa ge " p a d " or an ele gant setting for a style show, is the setting for D S C parties, the H om ecom ing Ball, college formals, and the Junior-Senior Prom. C are for a gam e of Bridge, ping-pong, pool, chess or checkers? The Student Union is the place to find it — as well as that afternoon snack or bed time meal.

P r e s id e n t ’s O ffice Dr. 0. A. DeLong President of Dickinson State College Under President D e L o n g 's leader ship, D S C has become North D akota's fastest growing college and proudly lives up to its slogan "q uality educa tion in the W e st."

P R A IR IE S M O K E M E S S A G E

The issues of Prairie Sm oke provide posterity with the most complete record of events in the history of Dickinson State College.

Prairie Sm oke is more than a recitation of

events of a given year —

the personalities and the spirit of

the year are ca u gh t up in the pictures of people and events and preserved as they were at the time history w as made. The year 1963-64 was no ordinary year at Dickinson. New positions added to the instructional staff, two new bu ild ings on the cam pus, the continued growth of the student body, the vitality of the students as expressed in the activity program s of the college, all indicate that forces of growth and progress have been at work during the year at Dickinson State and the people whose pictures appear in this annual have all been a part of this sign ifica n t year. — 0 . Two DSC Savages don’t seem to mind the war paint at all.

Homecoming to the DSC Savages means a wide variety of events. These start early to develop into a three-day Sav age land. The Savages picturesd above are practicing tribal dance steps for the ceremonial.

The Dean of Men, Vaughn Rhodes, gets painted by a DSC Savage. Especially the faculty members were captured by busy Savage artists during Homecoming preparations.

Two Okizus invade the Student Union Snack Bar to apply Savage war paint to Mrs. Christensen of the Business Office while other faculty members look on with merriment. However, their turn at the end of a paint brush came soon afterward.

S a v a g e C e r e m o n ia l Patterned after an authentic Sioux pow-wow, D S C Savages honor their hom e com ing royalty in the ceremonial. Retiring C h ie f Dave Larson, represented by his brother Pete, and Princess Judy K lick relinquish their authority as their headdresses are removed by C h ie f Fred Koese! and Princess Lola DeFoe. The New C h ie f dances to honor his Princess, and is followed by the dance of the Braves and M a id e n s honor ing their New C h ie f and Princess. O n e of the clim axes of the Sp ring Q uarter is the election of the student council for the next year. A full slate of candidates vied for the offices of president, vice-president, secretary, treasurer, social com m issioner, publications com missioner, sports com m issioner and music com missioner.

Candidates for office speak before the entire student body. Two organized parties ran full slates for the coveted offices and one person ran independently for the office of President.

Party workers "plaster” elec tion propaganda all over the campus.

C o n v o c a tio n s Ted Kennedy

Following the political footsteps of his famous brother, the late President John F. Kennedy, Senator Ted Kennedy of Massa chusetts spent a hectic two hours speaking, visiting, and dining in Dickinson. During a very short convocation in May Hall, at which time he was accompanied by Governor Guy and Senator Quentin Burdick, he spoke to the student body about the advantages of federal aid, as well as the gratitude of the entire Kennedy family for the generosity .and kindness shown since his brother's assassination. He is shown above as he arrived at the airport. At left, he is walking tvith President DeLong into May Hall.

Election Time

Pictured above is Myron Burian while delivering his campaign speech before the student body during the elections for Student Council offices. The convocation is an annual event to acquaint the students with the candidates and their platforms.

u r Hans Conreid

Motion picture and TV star, Hans Conried appeared in May Hall giving Shakespearian readings and dramatizations April 10 of this year. 167

S c h o o l P a rtie s Le Beatnik Ball

Beatnik twisters dressed appropiately, do the "Beatnik Tw isf’ oblivious of the camera or any other spectators.

Marv Gardner does an original reading at the Beatnik Ball. Sponsored by the French Club, the party was one of the more successful throughout the year. Part of its success was undoubtedly due to the moodsetting atmosphere created by the dark lights, cushions and boxes on the floor, candlelight, and time out for various readings such as the one done by Gardner.

Sadie Hawkins Dance One’s black and one’s white— his socks, that is. Crazy combinations and corny costumes helped to make the Sadie Hawkins dance fun for everyone attending. It was sponsored by the Freshman Class, and the music was provided by The Frontiersmen, a college group. Most of the school parties throughout the year are spon sored by a school organization. The themes vary, but the purpose remains the same-—to entertain the students.
