dr. r. c. gillund becomes d sc’s sixth president
P r a i r i e S m o k e interviewed Dr. Gillund at the clo se o f the y e a r f o r a State-of-the-College R e p o rt. H e re is the d ia lo g u e :
P R A IR IE S M O K E : A re there any changes that you as p resid en t w ill m ake in the near fu tu re concerning student life an d student fa c ilitie s ? T h e in stallatio n o f D r. R . C. G illund as the sixth president o f D ickinson State C ollege in M a y was the highligh t o f the co llege y e a r. M rs. E lv ir a J e s t r a b , p resid ent o f the North D akota B o a rd o f H ig h e r E d u c a tio n , delivered the in stallatio n address. D r. G illund was installed as D S C p resid en t by Dr. Kenneth R a sch k e , co m m issio n e r o f hig h er ed u cation. Guests were w elcomed to an in stallatio n luncheon by D r. P a u l L a r sen, dean o f the c o l le g e ; D ick in so n M a y o r H e n ry S c h an k , and other city and co lle g e d ig n ita rie s. J o h n T h o m p so n , p re s ident o f the co lle g e fa cu lty , spoke on b e h a l f o f the staff. T o n y J a c o b s , student senate president, represented the students. Jo h n Sch u ld , alu m ni asso ciatio n presid en t, presented g ree t ings. In stallatio n ce rem o n ies concluded with the p re sid e n t’s b all, a sem i-fo rm al event which was open to the p u b lic. P r i o r to com ing to D S C , P resid en t Gillund was tbe a ca d e m ic dean at V a lle y City State College.
D R . G I L L U N D : As president, I must contin u a lly be a le rt to the needs o f students on the D S C cam pus. In term s o f student life, the in stallatio n o f phones fo r the women students, the opportunity fo r freshm en and sophomore women students to have sp e cial privileg es the spring q u a r te r are ex am p les o f o u r endeavors to m ak e student lif e m e an in g fu l to the stu dents. In term s o f student f a cilitie s, we are co ncern ed that the Student C enter continue to be a fa c ility which suits the d esires o f our students. W e plan to devote a la rg e part of the su m m er in e x am in in g all o f our f a c ilit ie s : d o rm ito rie s, classro o m s, and the like. L uture ch an g es w ill be forthco m in g as the needs of the students are determ ined and o r requested.
T h e new bookstore is an e x a m p le o f a change that will be effective the f a l l q u a rte r o f 1 9 7 0 .
P R A IR IE S M O K E : W hat is you r opin ion abou t the fu tu re o f D SC? W ill it continue to grow as rap id ly as it has in the past 10 y ears? D R . G I L L U N D : D S C has en jo yed an en v iab le record o f growth in the past 1 0 y ea rs. As one realizes the d em o g rap h ic studies o f recent y ears and studies o f b irth rate data recen tly pu blished , it would a p p e a r that the high perce n tag e o f growth will not continue. North D ak o ta is having a significant d eclin e o f po pu latio n . T h is, coupled with the impetus given to vo ca tio n al education, would lead one to have some ap p reh en sio n about tremendous growth. D espite the po pulation d e crease, I am still optim istic about D S C ’s growth. T h e new p ro g ram s which beco m e effective this fa ll will ce rta in ly have an im pact on our e n r o l l ments in the future. It is my fe e lin g that a plateau has been reached on o u r en rollm e n ts f o r the next y ea r o r two, but I p re d ict and p ro je c t a steady growth from that point on. D S C has an outstand ing reputation and we are giving constant and c o n sid era ble thought to m e ans o f en co u rag in g m ore high school g rad u ates to attend D SC .
D R . G I L L U N D : W e expect to begin construction o f the D S C S tad iu m this sum m er, i f bids are satisfacto ry . W e have requested, in the next b i ennium , an ad d ition to M u rp h y H all and the L ib r a r y . W e are also requesting a m illio n d o llars fo r student housing. W e have legislative p e rm is sion to construct ad d itio n a l m a rried student hous ing as need dictates. W e a re raisin g funds fo r a F in e A rts C om p lex . W e have requested a d d i tio nal funds to expand Scott G ym nasium and our p h y sic a l ed u catio n f a cilitie s. W e a re hoping to b e a u tify the M a ll this su m m er, weather and funds perm itting. W e will be con structin g office f a c i l ities in the low er level o f K l in e f e lt e r H all during the su m m er months. W e a re requesting funds to construct a storage b u ild in g to re p la c e the u n sightly wooden b u ild in g behind Scott G ym nasium .
P R A IR IE SM O K E : Do you h av e any long range plans to assist this growth an d what a re they? D R . G I L L U N D : Y e s , we definitely have longrange plans to stim u late o u r en rollm en t. T h is past y e a r we have ex p erim en ted with little parties a fte r school hours at a n u m b er o f our area high schools. W e are going to expand upon this next year. I, fo r one, will visit every school in our are a . W e are en co u rag in g our D ivisio ns to p r o vide consultant services ( c lin ic s , w orkshops, etc.) to the schools to give evid ence o f o u r concern. W e will keep the nam e o f D S C co n tin u a lly b e fo re the pu blic. I will m eet with a ll o f o u r alu m ni by regions to seek th eir continued support in e n c o u r aging students to attend D S C . W e have esta b lished a sep arate news bu reau to co n tin u a lly sub mit news releases to the m e dia. O u r plan s a re so voluminous that to su m m ariz e them in a p a r a graph is difficult
P R A IR IE Z>MOKE: Do you h av e any plan s fo r construction an d bu ildin g on the cam pu s? I f so, when an d w here?
19
P R A IR IE S M O K E : W hat is y ou r opin ion abou t the involvem ent o f DSC students in activities ou tside the classroom ? H ow d o es it co m p a re with oth er sch ools? D R . G I L L U N D : It is m y philosophy that ed u cation is not lim ited to the confines o f a c la s s room. T h e re are num erous activities outside the classro o m that provide relev ant and m e a n ing ful le a rn in g exp e rie n ce s and co n trib u te to the overall growth o f the student. In co m p a riso n with other schools, I believe students at D S C possess a keen interest in p a rtic ip a tin g in activities outside the c la s s room and would rate high in co m p ariso n with other colleges.
P R A IR IE S M O K E : Do y ou thin k this in volvem ent is good, p oor, or indifferen t? I f so, w hy? D R . G I L L U N D : I believe, as I indicated p r e viou sly, that this is good. It shows vitality, as opposed to stagnation. T h is involvement will alw ays he va lu ab le, i f it is done with sincerity o f purpose.
P R A IR IE S M O K E : H ow d o you f e e l about students' attitudes tow ard the facu lty ? D R . G I L L U N D : It is my observation that stu dents have a resp ectfu l attitude toward the fa cu lty . I think this respect has been borne out o f good relatio n sh ip between students and facu lty . O bviously, this varies from Division to D ivision, p ro fesso r to p ro fesso r, hut by and la r g e , I am very pleased at the attitude o f the student toward the facu lty.
P R A IR IE S M O K E : Do you f e e l that th ere is a g o o d enough com m u n ication betw een the students, facu lty an d adm in istration ? D R . G I L L U N D : It is rath er difficult to make a gen eralized statem ent re lativ e to the lines o f co m m u n icatio n. I , p e rso n a lly , f e e l that they a re good, however, this is not to say that they can not be im proved upon and this is a real o b jectiv e which I have. I co n sid er this m atter o f co m m u n ic atio n o f p rim e im portance.
P R A IR IE S M O K E : In g en eral, how would you say you r first y ea r as p resid en t o f D ick inson State C olleg e has been ? D R . G I L L U N D : W ith o ut eq uivocation, this has been one o f the most rew arding, sa tisfy ing, and ex citin g y ea rs o f m y personal life and p ro fe ssio n a l c a r e e r . I cannot begin to to tally and co m p letely express m y deepest and sincerest f e e lin g o f ap p recia tio n to the students, fa cu lty and ad m in istrato rs fo r their patie n ce, k indness and co o peratio n. It is d i f ficult f o r any institution to ad just to a new presid ent and I must say, everyone has done everything to m a k e this y e a r tr u ly a m e m o ra b le one. M y only fru stratio n has been the seem ingly la c k o f tim e to do everything I have wanted to do.
20
P R A IR IE S M O K E : A re th ere an y changes that you f e e l are n ecessary b e fo r e next sch o ol y e a r ? I f so, w hat? D R . G I L L U N D : T h e first ch an g e that must tak e p rio rity is the transitio n from the B o o k R e n ta l System to the B o ok P urchase P la n . W e a re re -e x a m in in g o u r orie n tatio n , registration and advising p ro ced u res fo r next f a ll , to a ssu re students expeditious h an d lin g o f th eir co u rse p ro g ram m in g . W e a re reviewing out class sched ule c a r e f u l ly to avoid conflicts, in as much as possible. A ll facets o f o peratio n will he c a r e f u l ly scrutinized during the su m m er months.
21
P R A IR IE SM O K E : W hat is you r op in ion abou t the attitudes o f the students tow ard obtain in g an ed u cation ? How d oes it co m p a re with other institutions that you have b een at? D R . G I L L U N D : I have been pleased to observe that the m a jo r it y o f the students at D S C are d efinitely “ g o a l” oriented. T h e y have com e to this institution f o r an ed u cation. T h e y want that education to be m o re than cond itioning, m o re than a p ilg rim a g e in routine or p re m atu re adjustm ent. I sense
th e ir realizatio n that education at D ick inson is not m eant to re fo rm them, or to am u se them, nor to m a k e them ex p ert tech nician s. I hope that they are cognizant o f the fa c t that without id eas, without effort, without sch o la rsh ip , without ph ilo so p h ical continuity, th ere is no such thing as education. T h e attitude o f students at D S C toward obtain in g an e d u c a tion are u nq u estionably very good, as I co m p a re them with institutions with which I am f a m ilia r .
22
P R A IR IE S M O K E : Do you f e e l that the students cou ld be o ffe r e d m ore in the lin e o f ac a d em ics? I f so, what? D R . G I L L U N D : O ne ca n n ev e r b e satisfied with the status quo, th e re fo re , I n a tu ra lly feel that students could he offered m ore in the lin e o f a c a d e m ic pro g ram s. T h is is our great c h alle n g e , to be flexible in o u r a c a d e m ic program and to be ale rt to new ideas and concepts in a tim e o f vast explosions o f know ledge. O urs is an ever-chan ging society and to try to pro g n asticate would be difficult. W e must he co ntin u ally search ing , seeking, and re a d in g fo r new developments.
