The History It started as a dream and a need for southwest North Dakota. A barren butte west o f Dickinson was the proposed site and in 1918 the Normal School and later Dickinson State was formed. The purpose was stated quite simply by the first presi dent Samuel T. May, "Enter to learn; depart to serve. " Since that humble beginning, over 26,000 students have attended Dickinson State and have advanced into all walks o f professional life. The college is currently composed o f four schools, they are: Arts and Sciences: Business and Adminis tration; Education, Health Science, Physical Educa tion and Recreation; and Applied Science and Technology. Each school is divided into divisions and then de partments with various majors in each. DSC is fully accredited by the North Central Asso ciation o f Colleges and Schools along with the National Council for Accreditation o f Teacher Edu cation and is approved by the N.D. Board o f Nurs ing. The college is situated on 80 acres surrounded by the city o f Dickinson with a growing population o f 15,000.

The Future DSC lies in the heart o f a rapidly growing south west North Dakota. Intensified agricultural and en ergy development is changing the age, demogra phies, and population o f the area. New and ex panded expectations are being placed on DSC to provide agricultural specialists, business leaders, doctors, lawyers, nurses, secretaries, social work ers and professionals who can be leaders in this changing society. DSC has committed itself to the role o f molding leaders through efforts o f the Older Than A verage Student, extension classes, two year curriculum, four year accreditation programs, and classes that will enable students to leave DSC and attend any professional school in the country. The deep roots o f DSC in Western North Dakota provide the foundation for programs o f public ser vice that are dedicated to shaping the future and helping you become a part o f it.

Student Life: Finding Your Own Style:

The center o f college life is academic. The concentrate o f time is spent in the classrooms, library and labs. As in the outside world, work is important and central. The use o f free time can form as many experiences and relationships as the classroom. The college years offer a rare opportunity to discover our real identity and choose values that become a base for life. A t DSC the individual is valued and human personalities are cultured to provide and atmosphere that is stimulating and responsive.

New Experiences

Traveling abroad is one o f many "beyond the class room experiences" that students can participate in. Field trips, special guest speakers, festivals, seminars and workshops send students from the Student Center to San Diego and around the world in learning situa tions that leave impressions for a lifetime.

The placement o f DSC grads into the working world has a history o f success. Over 95% of all graduates that apply to the placement office are employed in less than one year. A full-time em ployee works with students to find permanent and part time employment for those completing their education and those seeking work to subsidize their college education. Seminars are offered, on preparing credentials into a resume for job inter views, pre-arranged interviews with prospective employers on campus, and bulletins on employ ment vacancies throughout the state and nation.

Career decisions take time. Students at DSC are given assistance in deciding classes, majors and scheduling problems. This one-to-one atmosphere is encouraged by the faculty to help students examine their goals and ideas. Opportunities in many different fields o f study are often discovered. Ques tions o f "how do / decide my schedule?, can / change majors?, which is the best decision for me to make?, what are my options?, need answers. The deans o f men and women are available for counseling situations along with a full-time career counselor and a tutor in student services. Everybody likes a winner and i t ’s little surprise why the Blue Hawks are the biggest show in town. A member o f the North Dakota Collegiate Athletic Conference and Women’s Athletic Conference o f North Dakota, DSC has a long tradition o f success and a loyal following o f students, alumni and friends whose enthusiasm for Blue Hawk athletics is contagious. The men compete in National Athletic Intercollegiate Association Division II championships in basketball, cross-country, tennis, track, and volleyball with the As sociation for Intercollegiate Athletics for Women Division III.

Preprofessional DSC has designed it ’s curriculum to prepare students for specific professional areas o f study. These programs expand annually and students often realize new career opportuni ties. The high standard o f the DSC educational require ments has given many the basis for attending professional and graduate schools across the nation. Agriculture Communications Engineering Health Sciences Home Economics Law Mortuary Science Social Science Theology Life and Environmental Sciences

Applied Science And Technology This area o f study is concerned with translation o f knowledge into action that can meet human needs. This translation requires understanding not only o f the knowledge itself, but requires specific skills in techniques and processes through which it is ap plied. This is essential to assure that knowledge is properly applied and the consequences o f applica tion are undSuch a background can give students power with which to direct their future.

Colleges are more than just a collection o f build ings that make up a campus. They are more than the faculty who teach there and even more than the students who come to learn. A college like Dickinson State takes on its own personality as the total o f all these factors. It becomes a unique com munity where people are encouraged to grow, both as individuals and as part o f an extended family. We are proud o f this community spirit at DSC and we think you will see it reflected in the pages o f the Prairie Smoke. There's a feeling o f warmth here that's more than just western hospitality. Seven DSC Champions. That's Right! Seven!! They are Kevin Thomason, Keith Burwick, Chad Lybeck, Jeff Nagel, Clay Nagel, Jim Ladbury and Kurt Less er. The seven DSC champs along with Dan Pitsch, travelled to Edmond, OK, to compete at the NAIA national meet. The Blue Hawks finished 11th over all, obtaining the highest place finish o f any District 12 team which includes Montana, North and South Dakota and Wyoming. "This allowed us to reach our goal o f placing in the top twenty and almost broke through the top ten, ” commented Coach Terry Burgess. "It was also a great experience for our wrestlers. " For Kurt Lesser, his best was enough for him to capture the national title in the heavy-weight division. Kurt became the first DSC wrestler to win a national title in more than fifteen years. "Kurt is my first national champion, and I hope to have more, but this one will always be special to me”, Burgess admitted. To Lesser, the win taught him to " . . . be lieve in yourself."

Graduation Graduation is a culmination o f years o f study, tests and hard work. To many it is the beginning o f an entire ly new way o f life — full o f adven ture. yet tinged with an apprehen sion o f what the future will bring. To others, it is the sense o f satisfaction in knowing that they have completed a goal which they set many years ago. The years o f study and work have developed each student in various ways: physically: mentally; socially and emotionally. Each o f these stu dents will agree that college has as pects that cannot be gained from any other type o f experience.

Y Yesel, Kimberly 46 z Zarak, Shawn 99 Zeller, Julie 44 Zuern. Annette 99 Many times all a yearbook is to a person is a book to look through and see how often they are listed. A yearbook, in essence, is a memory o f the year - what happened and some o f the important events that were captured by photo's and writing. When putting together such a com pilation o f ideas, events etc., it becomes in creasingly difficult to decide what to print and what to leave out. It is a job that requires the utmost o f consideration o f importance. Here then is the 1980-81 Prairie Smoke. I hope it satisfies your expectations o f what a memory should be o f a year. I want to thank my staff who helped collect information and photo’s. / especcially want to say thank you to D A N HART, the 1981-82 Prai rie Smoke Editor. We didn't quite make it to Jamestown.
