WELCOME DR. PH ILIP CONF

It will be a year for DSU to reflect on its past and a year to work to a bright future, DSU President Dr. Philip Conn said at the onset of the 1994-1995 academic year. “ I hope it is exciting and I hope it is positive,” said Conn about the upcoming year. Conn expects students to have opportunity to interact with him and to have a chance to voice opinions regarding the institution. “ I ’m especially impressed with D SU ’s poten tial and the caliber o f its faculty and academic programs,” said Conn. One o f Conn’s philosophies is that an uni versity should conform to the students needs and desires. He says DSU needs to think in terms o f the customer’s expectations and situ ations. Change is essential to the growth o f any in stitution, says Conn. He promised change say ing, “ The challenge is to make wise appropri ate changes that will lead to greater product and usefulness to the region.” One area o f change Conn feels important to focus upon is student recruitment on a na

tional and world-wide level. The effort to re cruit needs to be more aggressive, says Conn. This will help to create a more diverse student body. There are two reasons Conn believes in a more diverse student body. The first reason is D SU’s need for a stable enrollment base. Conn said he would like to in crease the enrollment. He said the second reason is that a more p o w e rfu l ed u ca tio n a l ex p erien c e w ill take place when there are students with varied backgrounds attending one institution. Conn still wishes to increase the number of international students attending DSU. He would like to have many different countries represented here at DSU, instead o f just a few countries. An important goal o f Conn’s is to create classes in every department that relates to southwestern North Dakota Region. Conn feels that students should be aware of the region they live in. “ Well-designed academic programs and quality teaching should constitute the heart o f a re gional institution o f higher education,” said

Conn.

These academic programs, said Conn, shoul include classes that are exclusively devoted t creating an awareness o f the region. Conn comes from a family that is familk with college settings. Both his father and h brother have experience as college presidents. Before coming to DSU, Conn was vice-pres dent for university advancement at Centn Missouri State University in Warrensburj Missouri. While there he was in charge of d recting student recruitment and admissior among other responsibilities. Conn’s educational background includes doctorate in Public Administration, a master o f arts in sociology and a diploma in social po icy, which he received from the Hague, Nethe: lands. The oldest o f 12 children, Conn was born i Decater, Alabama, but raised in Clevelanc Tennessee. Throughout his career Conn has been give ma n y h o n o r s, i n c l u d i n g b e i n g named t “ W ho’s Who in American Education,” 199< 1995 edition, and “ Outstanding Young Man c the Year’ ’-Frankfort, Kentucky Jaycees i 1976.

HILLTOP HOLIDAY IN THE SPOTLIG H T

Welcome to Hilltop Holiday 1995!! My theme “ In the Spotlight” holds a special meaning to me. Every Performance I have ever attended be it drama, juggling, or an op era have all had a common feature-a spot light. When the spotlight highlights someone they become the important feature, it is their turn to shine. Every performer in H ill top is a special act and I want them to have their moment o f glory whether they sing, dance or act. By placing the whole show in the spotlight we will brighten the stage for all to see and remember. -Julie Gunderson, dir.

A Look Back At The Season

It was a good year for Blue Hawk Football. Although they started the 1994 season with a loss to Black Hills State, the Blue Hawks came back with a bang and shut out Rocky Mountain. A fter picking up victories at South Dakota Tech and M ayville State, the stage was set for a rival showdown. Dickinson State defeated M i not State to celebrate Homecoming and then moved on to Valley City, where once again the Blue Hawks were victorious. The Hawks would then lose to Jamestown only to bounce back and tromp the University o f Mary. The last game o f the season would prove to be a heartbreaker as the Hawks fell short against Carroll College. The loss was enough to keep the boys in blue out of the playoffs, but they still shared the N D CAC Conference crown with Minot State.

The Blue Hawk Defense closes in for the kill.

The 1994 Blue Hawk Volleyball Team had a great season. The Lady Hawks placed first at the Black Hills State Tourney and worked hard to achieve the first 20 match winning season in the history o f the program. You could say that it was a year o f firsts as they also had their first .300 hitter on the team ( Sta cey Brooks), and it was the first time they beat every conference school. They were ranked as high as 4th in the Great Plains Region and finished the season ranked 7th in the Region. The Blue Hawks finished at 2nd in the conference behind the University of Mary.

MOVING ■ ■

The dictionary defines moving as: To go from one residence or location to another; relocate. Yes, that certainly describes what we all were doing carrying all o f those boxes and bags and armfuls of stuff up the stairs and to our new residence hall rooms. It all starts at home when we go through our rooms and our houses to grab every little item we think we’ll need. Then after we cram all o f our belongs into boxes, we take those boxes and cram them into our vehicles and prepare to drive to our new home. Once we arrive we unload everything from our vehicles and carry it all to our new room. It takes us hours to put everything away just perfectly, but when it is done we sit back and relax after a job well done.

The whole family chips in to help carry belongings into Woods Hall.

Wendy Peters has her boyfriend to help her carry her bags.

EDITOR’S NOTE

If I learned anything this year, I learned that be ing the editor of a large yearbook with two staff members is extremely tough. But it was a learning experience and for that I am grateful. I would like to thank the people that helped me out during the year. Those would be a follows: Mr. Marty Sabolo, Dr. Stephen Robbins, all of the staff in the University Relations Department (they pro vided me with most of our photos), J.D. Trams, Me lissa Cooley, Mary Gookin, Sandy Baer, and the in dividual organizations that were kind enough to help me out. A Great Big Thank You Goes Out To All Of You! Although this year was full of worry where the yearbook was concerned, I am glad I took the chal lenge. Thank you to all that were involved. 108
