Events

Rockin with the Blue Hawks!! Under the theme "Rockin with the Blue Hawks," the 1999 SOAR program was once again a hit. There were four SOAR sessions that took place this summer and all had great outcomes. A total of 417 students and 205 parents attended SOAR to experience what college life at DSU is all about. Many events were held throughout the two days of SOAR. Incoming freshman and transfer students met friends and faculty through many exciting events. There students also had the opportunity to see what residential hall life was like while staying there during SOAR. "I met a lot of new people at SOAR and I also got familiar with the campus," freshman Katie Grant commented about SOAR. Casey Kadrmas, who was a SOAR leader, sums up the experience as, "It's the best thing I've ever done here at DSU. The students were really nice, I had a lot of fun. I learned so much about the University system and I recommend that everyone try being a SOAR leader at least once!"

Representatives from the DSU. Stu dent Senate and Faculty and Staff take part in the Investiture Cerem ony for incom ing DSU P resid en t Dr. Lee Vickers.

Welcome! Chancellor Larry Isaak welcom es Dr. Lee Vickers to the North Dakota University System.

Proactive measures. During his welcom e speech, Dr. Lee A. Vickers newly named ninth president of DSU promises "to work in a proactive m anner with every segm ent of the University." 4 0 In v e stitu r e o f D r. V ick e rs

DSU Welcomes Dr. Lee Vickers As Dickinson State University continues to grow, it will do so under a new president. Dr. Lee A. Vickers joined DSU as the new president of Dickinson State. Vickers was formally sworn in as the ninth president of DSU during the investiture ceremony on October 8,1999. Although President Vickers started his work in July, the investiture ceremony was coordinated to go hand-in-hand with the University's Homecoming festivities. This way alumni could attend the ceremony. The President was welcomed by various representatives from groups with which Dr. Vickers will work during his reign as president. They included state government officials and the head of different departments of the University. Most spoke of how they will work with Dr. Vickers to enhance the image of Dickinson State University and the West River region. In his address, Dr. Vickers spoke of the new role educators will have to take in the twenty-first century. "As educational leaders, we must have the will to do the hard work of transforming ourselves and our actions thereby focusing on students' learning and leadership development. Our challenge is not just to teach—we must inspire students, inside and outside the classroom." Dr. Vickers went on to state that hope must be provided for those students who have the ability but not the confidence. A reception was held after the ceremony for members of the community, faculty, staff, and students to welcome Dr. Lee and Deanna Vickers to the area. I n v e stitu r e o f D r. V ic k e rs 41

University Players

The University Players is an on-campus club dedicated to promoting a strong interest in theatre arts within the community and throughout southwestern North Dakota. The group is open to any DSU student who has an interest in theatre. This year the group took part in the Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival. The aims for this national theatre education program are to identify and promote quality in collegiate level theatre productions. Nominees preform for cash prizes and the opportunity to advance to the National Competition. This year the Festival was held in Rapid City, SD. The Players once again held their annual Children's Theatre production. The Children's show served as the major fund raiser for the group. The title of the play this year was Mr. A's Amazing Maze Plays. 9 6 U n iv e r sity P la y e rs

Head Coach Hank Biesiot

DSU Football The DSU Blue Hawks had an outstanding season, finishing the season 7-3 and appearing in the NAIA playoffs for the seventh time in the history of the championships. Head Coach Hank Biesiot described this season as exciting and enjoyable, "It was a heck of a year and we had a very good football team that came very close to running the table." Biesiot commented that this year's Seniors were a group that will be sorely missed next year. Defense was the rule for the Blue Hawks. Senior Tony Biesiot finished his career with the team leading 81 tackles. Biesiot and his teammates recorded 36 quarterback sacks on the year. Junior Ray Boyum was responsible for 15 of those and will be a big part of the Blue Hawks defense next season. AllAmerican Darrick Ystaas was also a formidable force for the Blue Hawks this year, recording 50 tackles and three intercep tions. On Offense, Senior Troy Cleave directed his last season as Quarterback for the Blue Hawks. Gleave found his way into the record books this season by completing a 97 yard touch down pass to Carl Shafer against Jamestown. "We had a heck of a bunch of kids that made for an enjoyable season," Biesiot commented, "It was rewarding for the kids and staff to be back in the national playoffs."

Funda A liskan capped off her senior season by adding 736 kills to her name. Carolina Sanchez and Melissa W olfe earned All-Conference honors. Wrestlers take 4th at Nationals and win the Sportsmanship Award In what has been a banner year for athletics at DSU, the wrestling team will stand out as one of the teams that led the charge. Finishing fourth at the National Tournament, the Blue Hawks proved that they are a team that is on the climb and capable of com peting on the national level year in and year out. During the season the Blue Hawks had to overcom e injuries and one of the most difficult schedules in the country. Time and time again the Blue Hawks rose to the challenges laid before them, including a breakthrough performance at the DSU Classic where the Blue Hawks proved to be giant killers. All five of the Blue Haw k seniors placed at the national meet, including Brett Nedens who lost in overtime in the national cham pionship match to place 2nd in the nation.

In the 70’s and 80’s the Dickinson State University Cross Country teams were dominant in the region. In recent years several runners have been individual standouts and have competed well at the regional and national levels.

Coach

B-Ball Tara Kreklau

The Blue Hawks came out of the gate strong, with a 5-1 start which included some key wins against conference opponents. Then, the first bout of adversity hit first year Head Coach Tara Kreklau. AllConference center Stacie Schorsch was lost for the season to injury, and the Blue Hawks had to regroup before going on the road for a brutal swing through Montana that included perennial pow erhouse Rocky M ountain College. Other injuries and illness hampered the Blue Hawks, but they regrouped to bear Rocky M ountain College and W illiston State College at the Sam Milanovich Classic and entered conference play feeling the strength of those performances. In the first round of the NDCAC play-offs, the Blue Hawks traveled to M ayville State University. Again, the Blue Hawks cam e within a few minutes of winning the gam e, but Mayville sunk a three pointer with a little more than a minute to pull away for good. The team finished 10-17 overall and 4-7 in the conference. W hile it w asn't the season Coach Kreklau had hoped for, she feels good about the team and the direction things are headed. "W ith Stacie coming back and the new players we have signed I feel very good about next season," Coach Kreklau commented.
