MonoPix MonoPix is an international monthly magazine for photographers around the world who like to see there work being published. There are so many photographers among us who doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t get that chance. Well, MonoPix gives them a chance. Our publications presents the portfolios of amazing photographers. Portraits, street, scapes, or macro photography: each edition of Monopix has a general theme which can include a wide variety of photos. MonoPix is a growing series of hardcover books with the works of international photographers, releasing a new edition every month. Enjoy!

In 2015 and 2016 I have received several honorable mentions at the IPA, PX3, Mono awards and some awards at smaller venues for my architecture photography and since 2016. I’m also an Ambassador for ZEISS Netherlands (which I’m really proud off). How did I start in photography? At a young age I was running around with a small camera, taking pictures during vacations and really enjoyed it. Just having fun with a camera. When I was living in Austria I wanted to pick up photography and bought a simple digital camera. I was mostly shooting landscapes and the views from the cockpit during my work as a pilot. But it was all very limited and I was just enjoying myself and recording the world around me, without the idea to really learn more. About 6 years ago my wife gave me a Nikon D3000 DSLR MonoPix 2016© | 6

because our daughter was about to be born and I wanted to document her life with better photographs. This really kickstarted my interest in photography. I started reading a lot about photography. Learning the different techniques, trying things in the field and making a lot of errors. When I mastered the basics I bought some very cheap ND filters to experiment with long exposures. I was mainly shooting landscapes at that time and loved the soft clouds and water in long exposure shots. I always loved black and white photography. The absence of color makes a good photo even stronger. Still today with the saturated colours you see every day, I love the calmness and purity of black and white photography. In my search for good black and white photographers who use long exposures, I came across the work of Joel Tjintjelaar and Michael Levin.

2 photographers who inspired me to work on long exposure architecture photography. Studying hard and trying to master the techniques made me fall in love with this kind of photography. A processed image can take a long time to complete, but in the end it’s your vision that you share with the rest of the world and that is rewarding. I really it like when people see my photographs and start thinking about the architecture and how I see it, is different to how they see it everyday. A few years ago a friend of mine who is also a photographer and shares the views from the cockpit asked me why I didn’t took any photos during my work.

they did. The dynamic range is huge in the cockpit and you have to find a way to tackle that. You want to show both inside and outside. Everything moves and finding the right way to capture the scene how I wanted it was a process of trial and error. I’m happy that I can now share the amazing views that we encounter from the cockpit with the rest of the world. Today I love to shoot (fine art) architecture and cityscapes combined with long exposures and of course the views from the cockpit. I thought the demand for such a thing would be very limited and didn’t want to put too much of an effort in it. But I was wrong. After sharing a few images online the response was fantastic. It also helped a lot that I gained good knowledge in general about the technical side of photography. If I didn’t had that knowledge the photos wouldn’t have turned out how

miscellaneous techniques around photography and picture editing in the last few years I have to a greater extent specialized in minimalistic images in b/w.

In 1990, at the end of my schooldays, I got my first DSLR (Nikon F601) which got me started with nature and landscape photography. In 2006 I acquired a new friend, my first digital DSLR (Nikon D70s) camera. It was only with this camera that photography really became serious for me and is still providing me with good service every day. With this camera I was able for the first time to have the opportunity of screening the results directly whilst shooting and thus improve my skills.

As compensation for my occupation in IT, photography has become increasingly a more important and relaxing hobby for me.

It also enabled me though travel, to add city and architecture photography to my portfolio of nature and landscape work. By studying

Driven by the statement “photos are snapshots for eternity” I want to catch exactly those beautiful moments from different perspectives that other people will enjoy later. Additionally, in architecture photography I can minimize the perspective down to essential forms and even reduce this further by exposure in b/w.

“If there’s a light, you can’t always see. And there’s a world, we can’t always be. If there’s a dark, now we shouldn’t doubt. And there is a light, don’t let it go out” Song for Someone, U2 As an architectural photographer, I try to create photographs that build on the words and spirit of this song. Photography is a play on light and dark; a curious chiaroscuro. Photography is a direction and orchestration of what to keep, add, and take away; it’s a dance with real elements and an artistic vision. We don’t get many clouds in the land of sunshine. As a resident of Los Angeles, I rarely get the moody skies of contrast. And so, they have to be created – black skies with light streaks painted within.

I’ve always been drawn to the light, shape, and shadow of things. Escher-esque, My instinct is seeing the parts and pieces rather than the whole. Shooting architecture gives me the ability to shoot pieces of the whole, which quenches my inner drive to focus on certain elements and accentuate their beauty. This is especially true of the “everyday” that we walk by, not noticing and taking for granted. The dark in my photos is intended to accentuate the beauty of these architectural body parts as a black dress that drapes on the body of a beautiful woman – showing just enough softened highlight of shoulder, the lower curvature of the back, or the subtle muscularity and elongation of leg. The impression left is the sensual

and shapely silhouette or exposure of positive and negative space moving through the frame toward or away from the viewer. Or streaks of shadows, striking across, highlighting only sparkling eyes while the rest of the face fades to black. The view of the top of a building seen looking up catches angles and flecks of stone, glass or concrete. The intersecting of steel beams, the angles, corners and sweeps of texture capture the imagination. The light painted in the cloudless black sky symbolizes movement and breath. The soul of my architectural photographs lives within both the capture and the edit. The heart of the mood, I leave to the viewer, allowing it to beat as they wish. I want the viewer to put their deeper vision into the photo and make it their own experience. I believe that essence is what builds a relationship between photographer and viewer. David M.
