Crafts have been an inherent part of the Indian society ever since mankind came into existence. Over the period of time, craft became an extension of the community where it originated from and provided it with a cultural identity, thereby taking form of various craft traditions in different parts of our nation. In the complete gamut of sustaining our craft traditions, two factors that hold prime importance are - The Karigar (craftsperson) and his Karigari (skillfulness). The National Craft Seminar 2015- ‘Karigari: Crafting the Future’ celebrates the impeccable skilfulness of the Indian craftspeople who give shape to the numerous celebrated craft forms of our nation. This seminar looks towards the future of the karigari of the Indian karigar, by holding discussions on topics like Craft Design Collaborations, Craft in Interior Architecture and Entrepreneurship and Market Perspectives.

The National Craft Seminar 2015 - “Karigari: Crafting the Future” is a part of the nine day long, ‘Garvi Gurjari National Craft Fair and Summit 2015’ from 20th to 28th January, 2015 in Vadodara organised by Ministry of Cottage Industries, Government of Gujarat, India. The seminar will be conducted and organized by Design Innovation and Craft Resource Center (DICRC), CEPT University, Ahmedabad who is the Partner Institute for the Garvi Gurjari National Craft Fair and Summit 2015. About the Organizer Design Innovation and Craft Resource Centre (DICRC), CEPT University, India functions as a research centre for the development and understanding of Indian Crafts (SMC – Space Making Crafts and Surface Narrative Crafts) related to Traditional and Vernacular Buildings of India. Its one of the objective is to integrate the traditional knowledge and craft practices in current Interior-Architecture sector as well as design education. It has five major focus areas, which are Research & Documentation, Innovation and Development, Education and Training, Application and Collaboration and lastly Resource Building & Dissemination. Its main activities are to conduct dedicated research, documentation and organize programs, workshops and projects related to Craft and Traditional and Vernacular Interior Architecture. DICRC is one of the Research Centres of the CEPT University.
- Faculty of Design, CEPT University, Ahmedabad - Maharaja Ranjitsinh Gaekwad Institute of Design (MRID), Faculty of Fine Arts, MSU, Vadodara - Institute of Indian Interior Designers (IIID), Vadodara Regional Chapter Focus Areas The seminar will discuss various topics concerning the current scenario of the crafts sector. These include: - Craft Design Collaborations - Craft in Interior Architecture - Entrepreneurship and Market Perspectives Schedule The Seminar will be divided into two sessions covering six interactive sessions under three topics. Each session will be of 30 minutes followed by question answer session. The question answer session will focus on the larger issues or queries related to the subjects discussed in the presentations.
