GANDHI NU GAAM
Documentation of Space Making Crafts (SMC) of Traditional and Vernacular Housesof Gujarat by Design Innovation and Craft Resource Centre (DICRC) CEPT University, Ahmedabad Gujarat has rich and diverse traditional and vernacular buildings spread all across the five regions of our state, but there has been no common platform which has put all the finest examples of the traditional and vernacular building as well as the Space Making Crafts of Gujarat. One of the research project at DICRC aims to document in detail different types of such building and its crafts to prepare an exhaustive portfolio. The examples selected for the study and documentation showcase the essence and highest point achieved in our traditional and vernacular buildings as well as the Space Making Crafts integrated within it. Design Innovation and Craft Resource Centre (DICRC), established at CEPT University, Ahmedabad, functions as an interface for the development and understanding of regional Space Making Crafts (SMC – crafts related to Interior Architecture; also known as Building Crafts) of Traditional and Vernacular Buildings of India and envisions to integrate them in the current Interior-Architecture practice as well as education. Its main objective is to conduct dedicated research, documentation and organize programs, workshops and projects related to SMCs.

DICRC Research Team extensively travels throughout Gujarat scouting for the relevant examples which thus becomes a part of this SMC Documentation Portfolio. The first process involves the visual mapping of the area thus selecting the relevant building for the documentation with the permission of the resident/owner. It always becomes a privilege for the owner to get their house selected in these portfolios as well as a great learning for the documentation team to record such relevant and important example. The process of documentation requires a couple of weeks, for which the support of the resident/owner have always been very critical and important. The idea is not to merely photograph the building in detail, but also to measure and draw each and every smaller detail of the building and its component, which is thus later produced at DICRC into meticulous technical drawings which include both two dimensional and three dimensional details. These drawings could be used by the house owner/resident as well as people related to the field of built environment and crafts. The application of this portfolio ranges from restoration to refurbishment to conservation to research to design applications to development of educational material to training modules for the artisans/craftspeople. We, at DICRC, are grateful to the house residents/ owners who allowed us, to record their house in such detail. This data will be used essentially for the purpose related to research.
