I am a young Portuguese architect born in the spring of ‘92. From an early age I expressed my interest in the visual arts, leading my way to architecture.

I recently finished my studies at Porto’s School of Architecture (FAUP), where, during the past six years, I had the pleasure of working with architects such as Filipa Guerreiro and Francisco Vieira de Campos. Drawing, simplicity of concepts and attention to context were the main tools gathered during my studies there.

In 2014 I attended Kungliga Tekniska Högskolan (KTH), in Stockholm, as part of the Erasmus+ programme, where I focused my studies on sustainable design. Coming from a school (and a country) where sustainability isn’t a priority, I had to find a way of adapting

PROCESS PROCESS my process to it. By introducing this problem in my projects I aim to create context-aware solutions that are sustainable without looking so.

I had my first contact with the real world of Architecture in 2015, from where I took some aspects of my own practice. At AND-RÉ, I understood the real importance of research behind a project, and at FALA Atelier, the need of a good library and the use of pure geometry.

Besides architecture, I spend my time with cooking, reading, illustration and photography, disciplines that inevitably connect.

01 FAUP LAB Type: Academic Location: Porto, Portugal Tutoring: Francisco Vieira de Campos

This hipothetic extension of Porto’s Architecture School is designed by students for students. As so, it requires a reflexion on what is the present school and what is missing. The building is composed of two regular concrete bodies that alternate their openings from east to west between floors, giving the idea of a folded sheet of concrete. The two concrete bodies are in fact just one, linked on the bottom floor by a patio that serves the workshops and on the entrance floor by a glass corridor. The entrance is made at street level through an atrium that leads to the auditorium and one of the open space rooms. From here, the glass corridor leads to the smaller building where common and study rooms are. Bellow, the workshops for model making and another open space room. Above, six classrooms that can turn into two open spaces and two conference rooms. Maximum space flexibility is provided by a mixed structure of iron and concrete that allows the use of light, (re)movable elements, such as walls, bleachers or illumination.

02 SHIFTING KIRUNA Type: Academic Location: Kiruna, Sweden Tutoring: Max Zinnecker, Rumi Kubokawa, Sara Grahn

This project is inserted in the Kiruna 4-Ever project, for the expansion of the town of Kiruna, in northern Sweden. The aim of the project is to promote permeability between different parts of the city, by bringing nature into it and, then, into the building. The site creates a new city park close to the more natural green finger. The building will work as place for single people, new comers to town or temporary living and within it, a comunity will be built. As for the building itself, in order to keep a confortable living environment in the harsh conditions of the polar region, it is proposed a passive ventilation system that naturally warms or chills the air underground. Adding to this, the building has a layered layout, inspired in reindeer fur, with a core element, living areas and buffer zones both on east and west. While the buffer zone to the east works as individual balconies to the apartments, the one to the west works as common space, where people can meet as well as grow plants and vegetables. connected to this space are the entrances to the apartments and to service spaces, such as a common hall with kitchen, two saunas and two laundry rooms. The living units are single room apartments that use both faรงades.

03 A TWO WAY MIRROR Type: Competition, 120 Hours 2015 Location: Pyramiden, Svalbard, Norway Team: Diogo Paixão, Igor Fidalgo, Mariana Silva

Preservation should not be forcefully expected. Nowadays,

architectural

associated to rrgent repair. This reconstruction overdose often leads to deserted buildings and empty programs. Why not simply allow the natural process of degradation?

“What does a mirror look at?” - Frank Herbert

When arriving at Pyramiden, we see ourselves reflected on a wide mirror that spreads along the bay. The entrance connected to the harbour lets us cross to the other side. Facing the fjord, the wall mirrors the memory of what the place was before human intervention and anticipates what it will become. From the inside, it emphasizes the degradation of pyramiden, the frailty of human presence. Between walls, full transparency. A concrete walkway that adapts itself to the mountain’s topography. This is the only place where one can perceive both sides.

04 ARRIFES SCHOOL Trainee Architect at AND-RÉ Type: Competition / 1st Place Location: Açores, Portugal Project Team: Bruno André, Francisco Salgado Ré, Catarina Fernandes, Diogo Paixão

The proposal has its basis in its rational strategy, seeking to fully respond to the program needs and specificities of the briefing. The school is designed as a single and coherent system, that responds efficiently to all variables, whether by the way it addresses the topography, or for its implementation and volume, constructive

orientation, distribution, organization or materials used. Despite its strong pragmatic character, reflected in the systematization of the design, the project does not limits itself to a mere functional response. The proposal seeks to use the potential of architecture to create an inspiring, referential and relevant school. Therefore, the architecture contributes to the promotion of dynamic experience and positive use, enhancing the motivational and educational environment, both for students and teachers.

05 CATARINO HOUSE Trainee Architect at FALA Atelier Type: Private Comission Location: Porto, Portugal Project Team: Filipe Magalhães, Ana Luísa Soares, Ahmed Belkhodja, Diogo Paixão, Mariana Silva, Paulo Sousa

We were given an old house, a program and total freedom. On the ground floor, the garage, living room and the kitchen and toilet hidden behind folding panels. On the first floor, one bedroom suite, one simple bedroom and one bathroom. The ground floor has a low ceiling, directing our eyes towards the patio in the back. The first floor uses the roof space to give a different character to each room: a big vault with a skylight in the entrance hall; a house shaped suite; and a sloped ceiling bedroom.

06 NO ONE’S HOME Type: Competition, 120 Hours 2016 Location: Nowhere Team: Diogo Paixão, Igor Fidalgo, Mariana Silva

This home has no site, so it faces itself. A wall that guides you through eleven doors, each one reflecting a different level of intimacy:

*Five colossal doors take you to the first space - the hypostyle hall - the highest and widest space of all. A multipurpose room where you can just be. * One tall, narrow door leads you to the fire, the place to gather around. * Two twin doors show you to the place where you can cook, eat, feed. * One single door hides the private room, where you can bathe. * One small, wide door lets you in the rounded space reminiscent of a baby’s cradle where you can sleep. There is an inner space for absolute seclusion. * One last door takes you upstairs to the last room, where the sky is the roof.

Even though this house has no function, it can still be a home. A home for (a) man. Basic needs reflect different spatial qualities.

The house is ultimately a shelter.
