2011 / relationship between building and surroundings / designing with a module orientation: filipa guerreiro the main cafeteria is buried in the sloping ground of the city park, opening towards the valley. only four slim bodies can be seen when arriving from the main path. together they create a visual filter, defining strategic views, and create spaces with different qualities. inside, the light is very controlled and appears in different ways, whether skylight, direct or indirect illumination.

2011 / house + greenhouse / first experience in housing design orientation: filipa guerreiro this house aims to have no corridors: a succession of rooms and outdoor patios organize the house, creating both visual and physical continuity in space. outside, every room is perceived as a different volume. the house is served by a greenhouse that overlooks the douro river.

2012 / first experience in public buildings orientation: luís urbano
miming the nearby traditional porto houses, the three towers rise on top of a built podium and stand on the top of the virtudes’ garden, blending with the surrounding houses and the steep platforms of the garden. during night, the middle tower lights up and works as a beacon to attract people. the side towers house a cafeteria and an exhibition room. nearby stands the lecturers’ and researchers’ accomodation, also part of the cultural centre. similar to the main building, it blends with the surrounding houses.

2014 / proposal for an extension of porto’s architecture school orientation: francisco vieira de campos the school is designed by students for students. the building is made out of two regular concrete bodies that alternate the openings from east to west between floors, giving the idea of a folded sheet of concrete. the two concrete bodies are in fact just one, linked on the bottom floor by a patio that serves the main workshop and on the entrance floor by a glass bridge. maximum space flexibility is provided.

2014 / kiruna, sweden / comunity housing / public space / sustainable design orientation: max zinnecker, rumi kubokawa sara grahn this project is inserted in the kiruna4ever project, for the expansion of the town of kiruna, in northern sweden. the aim of the project is to promote permeability between different parts of the city, by bringing nature into it and, then, into the building. the site creates a new city park close to the more natural green finger. the building will work as place for single people, new comers to town or temporary living and within it, a comunity will be built. as for the building itself, in order to keep a confortable living environment in the harsh conditions of the polar region, it is proposed a passive ventilation system that naturally warms or chills the air underground. adding to this, the building has a layered layout, inspired in reindeer fur, with a core element, living areas and buffer zones both on east and west. while the buffer zone to the east works as individual balconies to the apartments, the one to the west works as common space, where people can meet as well as grow plants and vegetables. connected to this space are the entrances to the apartments and to service spaces, such as a common hall with kitchen, two saunas and two laundry rooms. The living units are single room apartments that use both faรงades.

2014 / analysis and reflexions on a 11th century church and monastery
M O N A S T E R Y
team: diogo paixão, diogo amaro, lúcia pedro, luísa ribeiro, rita rocha, sara martins orientation: sílvia ramos this analysis extends its limits to the territorial scale, trying to understand the purpose and presence of the monastery in the lima river’s drainage basin. from the original building, the church is the only surviving part, having been itself object of many interventions throughout the past centuries. the monastery itself stood on the eastern slope of a mountain, facing both the rivers vade and lima. as for the church, the head chapel is, according to canon, turned to east. the entrance is made through two openings facing north. it is believed, based on acquired information, that the monastery might have stood close to a no longer existing iron-age hill settlement as well as to previous roman and medieval roads leading to Braga and Ponte da Barca. the analysis of the building comprehended an intensive study on the structure, stone masonry, carpentry and ornaments. The main goal was to read the history of the building on its stones. with all the information collected both from texts on similar case studies and from the study of the building on site, we proposed a possible shape for the original church and location for the cloister that no longer exists.

2013 / 48 hours competition / proposal for neighbourhood workshops + market team: diogo paix達o, rita rocha, sara martins having the basic concept of the greek stoa as a starting point, this proposal aims to create a space that works both as an attractive beacon and a small marketplace that promotes interaction and exchange of knowledge as well as tradition, generating and valuing public space. with this in mind, the proposal lives of its surroundings and, on the other hand boosts them, bringing to itself the dynamics of the nearby streets. the design also takes in mind its strategic location as a lookout over the douro river.

2014 / 120 hours competition / meeting point for øya festival team: diogo paixão, rita rocha the project operates in a double base: take the festival to the city and the people to the festival. stools are scattered all over oslo’s squares and parks and all you have to do is pick one up and bring it to tøyen park. there you can use it to rest, watch concerts or even to use as a step when you arrive late and you need to find your friends in the crowd! test your imagination. the meeting point is on the upper part of tøyen park. it is hard to miss it as every path leads there. it circles a pre-existing tree which works as a beacon during the night. between the three walls that circle the tree, sprouts a variety of chilling and partying spaces.
