WINDHOEK, NAMIBIA
OUR SUGGESTIONS Windhoek, the capital of Namibia, is located in a basin between the Khomas Highland, Auas and Eros Mountains. It is 1,680m above sea level, 650km north of the Orange River and 360km from the Atlantic seaboard. Whether due to pure luck or a brilliant stroke of Germanic planning, the city is situated in almost the countries epicenter. This location has obvious benefits when it comes to governing a country the size of Namibia, and also makes it the ideal place to start and plan any Namibian travel. The majority of tourists visiting Namibia on a fly drive safari start their adventure in the capital as it is the main entry point to the country. There are several large international companies offering rental cars at Windhoek International Airport while numerous smaller companies offer vehicle hire in Windhoek. In 2013 the population of Windhoek was approximately 342,000 people, an extremely small capital by global standards. This number is growing rapidly at present mostly due to a lack of employment in rural areas. Despite the large increase in population over the last few years the city centre is extremely clean, and mostly trouble free. Most tourists comment on the cleanliness of the city, and often pronounce it to be a most un-African city (a somewhat back-handed compliment). The city centre is characterised by a proliferation of German style buildings, a lasting reminder of Namibia’s early colonial history. Early buildings such as the Alte Feste (old fort), Christuskirche and Tintenpalast (the parliament buildings) are of particular historical interest. In a wonderful display of irony, the Alte Feste Fort, once the bastion of German colonialism, now houses the National Museum which places particular emphasis on the freedom struggle and Namibian independence, right in front of the fort is the iconic Reiterdenkmal (equestrian memorial). Other notable buildings in Windhoek include St Mary’s Cathedral and the Turnhalle Building.

KALAHARI FARMHOUSE ARRIVE: SUNDAY, 04 NOVEMBER 2018 – DEPART: MONDAY, 05 NOVEMBER 2018
Farmhouse
WHY STAY? If there was ever an enchanted garden, this is it. Entering the Kalahari Farmhouse is like stepping into a magical enclave or an oasis in the desert - far away from the world. It urges you to take off shoes, lie on the soft grass, open a book and relax. The cottagey chalets with colourful patchwork quilts, fireplaces and oodles of charm look onto the garden lined with towering palms. Birds flutter through the trees, water runs in the streamlets and the feeling of peace pervades the intimate Kalahari resort. Well-positioned on the outskirts of Stampriet where life-giving artesian water spurts to the surface, the Farmhouse enjoys this generous boon in the Kalahari Desert. The ample water supply allows the garden to be kept lush and Gondwana’s Self Sufficiency Centre to grow its produce for the collection of lodges around the country. The gods surely smile on this land where goodness grows. At the Centre, adjacent to the lodge, seasonal vegetables are grown, cows are milked, and a variety of salamis, sausages and biltong are produced. Chickens wander about and pigs grunt contentedly from their enclosures. Take the time off on a trip to put up feet at Kalahari Farmhouse. Easily accessible if travelling between Windhoek and the South, or if en route to the Kgalagadi or South Africa, the lodge is best enjoyed over a few days. Visit the Self Sufficiency Centre, lounge around the pool or in the garden, join a sunset excursion into the burnished dunes at Kalahari Anib Lodge, 30km away, and REST. KALAHARI, NAMIBIA
OUR SUGGESTIONS Heading east from Mariental, on the C20 towards Stampriet or on the C18 towards Gochas, one reaches the western margin of the Kalahari desert. The Kalahari is part of an expansive sand basin reaching from the Orange River to Angola, in the west into Namibia and in the east across Botswana to Zimbabwe, an area of more than 1,2 million square kilometres. The enormous amounts of sand, intensely red-orange in colour, were created by erosion of softer rock formations. The wind has shaped the long sand ridges which are so characteristic for the Kalahari landscape. Annual precipitation in the Kalahari averages between 150 and 250 mm. In some years it gets as much as 500 mm of rain, but there are also years without any. Only in the most recent history of the earth, some 10,000 to 20,000 years ago, the dunes were stabilised through the growth of plants, so that a dry savannah developed. The dunes don’t shift like those of the Namib Desert. Grasses, thorny shrubs and acacia trees are dominant, because they can survive droughts of more than 10 months each year. In Camelthorns and other Acacia tress one often finds the striking nests of the weaverbirds. These plain little birds that look like sparrows, live in huge communal nests with a diametre of up to two metres. Usually hundreds of these lively birds breed together in such nesting colonies. One gets the best impression of the landscape and ecology of the Kalahari in the Kgalagadi Transfrontier National Parks. This is one of the most beautiful nature and game parks in southern Africa, positioned in South Africa and in Botswana. The northern entrance to the park lies near Mata Mata (border post and restcamp), some 180 kilometres south of Gochas.

VINETA, SWAKOPMUND
OUR SUGGESTIONS Vineta is one of the suburbs of the town of Swakopmund in Namibia. This neighbourhood is located to the north of the town centre and extends over 3 km along the Atlantic coast. To the east it borders on the C34 road and the Tamariskia neighbourhood. When it was built in the 1950s, it was located about 1 km north of the town centre, with only sand and some shacks inhabited by the coloured people in between. Now the centre and Vineta form a contiguous area. Most houses in Vineta originally belonged to white people in the inland, and the houses were used as holiday houses. Now it is inhabited by people belonging to the middle and the upper stratums of the society. There are also some apartment buildings, schools and recreational facilities in the neighbourhood.

OUTJO, NAMIBIA
OUR SUGGESTIONS The small town of Outjo in northern Namibia boasts a population of around six thousand people. The town is nestled among small hills and is best known for being a cattle farming centre and the gateway to Etosha Park, the Andersson Gate is approximately 100km’s north of the town. Outjo has several major banks, restaurants, a hospital, hotels, supermarkets and petrol stations. The Bäckerei Outjo is a bakery & café with tasty German cakes, strudel bread and coffee. The town was founded as a small military base in 1897, and was primarily used to explore the northern reaches of Namibia. Places of interest in the town include the Naulila Monument, commemorating the 19th October 1914 massacre of German soldiers and officials by the Portuguese near Fort Naulila on the Kunene River in Angola. It also commemorates soldiers killed on 18th December 1914, under Major Franke, who was was sent to avenge the earlier losses. The Windmill Tower, east of Outjo, was constructed in 1900 to provide fresh water for German soldiers and their horses, as well as for the hospital. The Outjo museum is housed in the Franke Haus which was built in 1899 as the residence for the towns commanding officer. The museum houses a number of interesting articles from the area including local gemstones, a variety of antique furniture and a display about the campaign of Major Viktor Franke into Ovamboland Apart from Etosha, features of the general area include the Ugab Terraces, ‘Vingerklip’ and the volcanic tiger’s eye deposits on the farm Hopewell.

ETOSHA NATIONAL PARK
OUR SUGGESTIONS One of the greatest game parks in Africa–and one of the oldest–is also Namibia’s number-one tourist destination. Home to 114 large and small mammal species, more than 400 recorded bird species, scores of reptiles and even a fish species, Etosha is the country’s flagship park. The size of the park has been reduced considerably since it was first proclaimed in 1907, but its till remains larger than several European countries. The Ondonga name for the pan was Etosha, meaning ‘the place where no plants grow’, but early European traders, unable to pronounce the name, called it ‘Etosha’. The pan was once part of the massive Lake Kunene fed by the Kunene River, which at sometime in the distant past dried up, leaving the current pan system. Newly excavated fossils belonging to marsh-dwelling antelopes such as sitatunga, lechwe and tsessebe, and a 90- cm long catfish, are testament to much wetter periods.

CHOBE NATIONAL PARK
OUR SUGGESTIONS Whether arriving by air or road, the first glimpse of the river – deep and dazzling in the sandy terrain – is always breathtaking. It appears as a swathe of brilliant, peacock blue ribbon, winding its way through the tiny town of Kasane, and ensuing wilderness – the Chobe National Park. Undoubtedly one of Africa’s most beautiful rivers, the Chobe supports a diversity and concentration of wildlife unparalled anywhere else in the country. The Chobe Riverfront, the Ngwezumba pans, Savuté and Linyanti. The most accessible and frequently visited of Botswana’s big game country, the Chobe Riverfront is most famous for its large herds of elephants and cape Buffalo, which during the dry winter months converge upon the river to drink. During this season, you may see hundreds of elephants at one time. You may be surrounded by elephants, as the main Serondella road becomes impassable and scores of family herds cross the main road to make their way to the river to drink, bathe and play. Driving the loops that hug the river’s edge, you may see up to 15 different species of animals on any one game drive, including waterbuck, lechwe, puku, giraffe, kudu, roan and sable, impala, warthog, bushbuck, monkeys and baboons, along with the accompanying predators lion, leopard, hyena and jackal. Take a river cruise – and you’ll experience the park, and the animals, from another vantage point. Here you’ll get up close and personal with hippo, crocodile and a mind-boggling array of water birds. Over 460 bird species have been recorded in the park, making it one of Africa’s premier venues for bird Safaris. Common species to be seen include the Sacred ibis, Egyptian Geese, the ubiquitous cormorants and darters, Spur-winged Geese, pel’s Fishing Owl, carmine Bee-eaters, most members of the kingfisher family, all the rollers, the unmistakable Fish Eagle, the Martial Eagle, and many members of the stork family. The Chobe River rises in the northern Angolan highlands, travels enormous distances before it reaches Botswana at Ngoma.

BARANGWE PAN
OUR SUGGESTIONS Thobolo’s Bush Lodge is situated one hundred and eight kilometres out of Kasane, all on a good tar road, except for the final ten kilometres into the bush. The route out of Kasane takes one along the main transit road through Chobe National Park towards the Namibian Border Post at Ngoma. Just before the border turn left towards the small village of Kachikau where the tar ends and becomes a four wheel drive road for the last ten kilometres to the lodge, Thobolo’s is ideally situated along a well driven route to Savuti, Moremi and Maun. The lodge overlooks the largest natural pan in the area, Barangwe Pan. A large Baobab Tree (named The Attitude Tree by The Lodge) welcomes you at the entrance. Thobolo’s does offer easy day game drives to the Savuti Marsh area, Linyanti River and the upper section of the Chobe River front in the National Park, entering through the Ngoma entrance gate. Nearby Kachikau Village, which is one of the oldest villages in this area, boasts a very well stocked Botswana Basket shop and other attractions. An ideal base for the four wheel drive fraternity. In addition, the lodge offers transfers for the 2×4 fraternity by providing a secure lock-up in nearby Kachikau. Day drives into these prime wildlife destinations of Botswana are therefore available to all. The lodge is the first of its kind in Botswana for a number of reasons. The lodge has been built using a system called LGS construction (light gauge steel) which is being recognized world wide as one the greenest building methods available. Thobolo’s Bush Lodge has received the ECO TOURISM LEVEL – the highest eco level available. The lodge provides electricity entirely by solar. The Sun Trackers is a cutting edge system with solar panels that move and follow the path of the sun throughout the day. A standby generator is used in the event of continuous overcast days to charge batteries, when necessary. No indigenous timbers have being utilized throughout the construction process.

CAMP SAVUTI ARRIVE: SATURDAY, 17 NOVEMBER 2018 – DEPART: SUNDAY, 18 NOVEMBER 2018
Meru-style Tents
WHY STAY? Camp Savuti has become famous for its exceptional game viewing opportunities, in particular it is famed for lions that prey and hunt on elephants, which are found in abundance in the area. Awardwinning documentaries have been shot in the Savuti area, cementing its reputation as a prime wildlife destination. The Savuti channel was a dry channel that began flowing again in 2010. Minor earth tremors caused the unblocking of the Savuti channel which is linked to the Linyanti river system. Camp Savuti overlooks the dense Savuti marsh area and all 5 of the Merustyle tented rooms have elevated balconies taking advantage of these views. The large, spacious tents are located in such a way that they enjoy privacy and exclusivity. For the adventurous, there are outdoor showers where you can cleanse while enjoy the tranquillity of the African bush. Guests can enjoy a range of activities from game drives through the Chobe National Park and exploring the fringes of the channel and the marsh. The area is diverse and guests will delight in the superb game viewing on offer. From photography to bird watching and predator sightings, Camp Savuti is the authentic safari gem of the Chobe region. SAVUTI, BOTSWANA
OUR SUGGESTIONS Savuti Channel: Savuti is famous for its mysterious and fascinating channel. It runs a distance of 100 kilometers from the Chobe River, through a gap in the sand ridge, to the Mababe Depression. Wildlife, Savuti is famous for its predators, especially its resident lion and spotted hyena populations. Linyanti and the western reaches of the Savuti Channel. The Linyanti and upper Savuti areas are among the most beautiful in Botswana. The game-viewing can be exceptional, and the wide variety of activities make this an area not be missed. Birdlife, large secretary birds and kori bustards can be sighted strutting around the Savuti marsh and small redbilled francolins is known for its noisiness. Interesting summer migrants and water birds include Abdim’s storks, carmine bee eaters and even fish eagles. Vegetation, the Savuti area is mainly characterised by Camelthorn sandveld, Silver Terminalia, sandveld, scrub savanna, and mopane veld. Savuti’s almost desert-like landscape with a scorching sun, loose, hot sand, animals escaping the heat by clumping together in the limited available shade, and elephants lining up to get to the water supply. Geology, this desolate, harsh landscape was once submerged beneath an enormous inland sea. Geologically the five main features of Savuti are all intricately linked in the most fascinating manner. People still speculate as to how this once massive lake received its waters. A changing climate which reduced rainfall and brought a return of almost desert-like conditions caused the super-lake to be cut off from its supplies of water, and dry up and vanished. When to visit: Rainy season, Rains arrive from November to April, at which time the animals make their way to pastures rich in new grass. In February they start heading northwards again. Dry season, From May to October the water pans dry up and the animals are attracted to three artificial waterholes. September and October can be extremely hot but game viewing is very rewarding as predators are concentrated around the waterholes.

KHWAI, BOTSWANA
OUR SUGGESTIONS The Khwai Concession is a large area dominated by Mopane forests on the north eastern edge of the Okavango Delta. This vast area belongs to the local community and they now offer wonderful Botswana safaris in the region. Migrating herds of Elephant favor the Mopane forests in this area and there are usually good wildlife sightings. It was formed by the local Khwai villagers and is managed by the Khwai Development Trust. The Khwai River flows through the concession - it is the first major water source that animals migrating down from the Linyanti concession encounter and there is always a high concentration of game along the river. Habitat, the area is made up of sweeping grasslands, riparian forests and floodplains. The floodplains are flooded most of the year and there are lagoons covered in blue and white water lilies. The area also has large tracts of Mopane forests. The riverine woodland consists of Camelthorn, Knobthorn, Appleleaf and great stands of Leadwood trees. Wildlife, the Khwai Concession is a good area to see Roan and Sable Antelope which are relatively rare. On your Botswana safari you might see Kudu, Tsessebe, Wildebeest and Zebra. Huge herds of migrating Elephants enjoy the Mopane woodlands of the interior of the Khwai area. There are fairly stable populations of large predators such as Lion, Spotted Hyena and African Wild Dogs found here and if you are lucky, you may also spot Leopards. Birdlife, the area has a good mix of habitats and you will see a good mix of wetland and Kalahari species. During the summer months migratory birds also come through. You might see Verreaux’s Eagle Owl, Senegal Coucals and Long Toed Lapwings. When to visit, as this area is mostly dry, you can visit at any time of the year. The region is mostly made up of Kalahari sand veldt, and the Mopane forests are home to numerous Elephant.
