Jackson Boulevard Transit Center TARTA + City of Toledo re-Framing Civic Infrastructure Beyond Transit

Bus Transit Center as Civic Room + Park Economic development and the revitalization of downtown Toledo lie at the heart of the planning for the TARTA’s new downtown multi-modal hub, the Jackson Boulevard Transit Center. Nestled into the urban fabric of the city’s Downtown District, it will replace TARTA’s downtown Bus Loop. A transit cul-de-sac, with the capacity to load 16 coaches at the same time, will be accessed from Jackson Street. When not at peak commuting hours, the cul-de-sac beneath the Civic Canopy can be re-programmed to host civic events such as markets, concerts, rallies and festivals. A modest Bike Shelter will occupy the NE corner of the site, linking to extensive trail networks and fostering the growth of alternative commuting. The Center’s soaring Civic Canopy (a 40,000sf, glazed space frame supporting photovoltaics) capitalizes on the regions expertise in glass and solar technologies. The Great Lawn, a landholding strategy for future development, will provide a simple civic commons for the CBD and serve to a stormwater management approach that feeds the site’s entire hydraulic collection to rain gardens along the site’s west flank off Superior Street.
