Miss you, mom! Already …

So this is my new view. Here we are at the other side of the world. Bye bye Yorkshire, welcome Perth! All four of us are soooo tired! Even Lilly is quiet. Tomorrow, dad starts working at his new firm. Already! Next week, school starts. New school. New house. New neighbours. Old questions: will they like me? Will I make friends soon? Is this move to Australia really a good idea?

is feeling fantastic at

Perth.

Julian added two pictures with Brian. Never forget … we love you!

Which members of the Brockman family do you see in the car? mother Sue father Pete aunt Angela daughter Karen oldest son Jake youngest son Ben grandfather Frank niece Jane Why is the family in the car? They are going to visit a farm for Karen’s birthday. They are going to fish. They are going to pick up father Pete who is waiting at the farm. What is the biggest problem the family has in the car? They are caught in a traffic jam. Ben has to go to the toilet. Grandfather doesn’t want to visit the farm. Aunt Angela has a stain on her expensive trousers. Ben is making rude hand signals to the driver behind. Why is it not a good idea to play “Who can tell the biggest lie?” Because they can’t lie to each other, they know each other too well. Because the kids don’t understand the game. Because aunt Angela tells a rude lie. Because Karen lies that she likes aunt Angela. “You are not allowed to talk on the phone.” Why Is mum Sue upset when her daughter Karen tells her this? Because she knows her daughter is right. Because Karen is wrong. Because she doesn’t want her husband (whom she is calling) to find out she is using the phone while driving. Sue is not upset because of this. She is upset because of the traffic jam and the fact that they will be late. “Oh God, there’s no lid.” Why is this a problem? Because the box is filled with pee. Because now the sweets that are Karen’s birthday treat roll all over the car. Because Karen thinks there has to be one. Because aunt Angela just has had enough of it all. She’s angry.

8. Shuffle Sunday Roast 35

Read the text and answer the questions. Lees en beantwoord de vragen.

The Sunday Roast is close to the heart of the English people: it represents family and friends like no other meal. In fact, the Sunday roast is only beaten by fish and chips as the nation’s overall mostloved food. __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Sunday Roast originated in England as a meal to be eaten after church on Sunday. One theory says that in the late 1700s during the industrial revolution in the United Kingdom, families would place a cut of meat into the oven as they got ready for church. They would then add in vegetables such as potatoes, turnips and parsnips before going to church on a Sunday morning. When they returned from the church the dinner was all but ready. The juices from the meat and vegetables were used to make a stock or gravy to pour on top of the dinner. __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Left-over food from the Sunday roast has traditionally formed the basis of meals served on other days of the week. For example, meats might be used as sandwich fillings, roast beef may be chopped up with leftover roasted potatoes and some additional onion and then fried in a pan with a bit of oil and desired seasonings until somewhat crispy to make roast beef hash, lamb might be used in the filling for a shepherd’s pie. to represent = vertegenwoordigen, symbool staan voor

Listen to the song from the movie The life of Brian and answer the questions. Luister naar het lied en beantwoord de vragen. And Always look on the bright side of life! Always look on the bright side of life If life seems jolly rotten, There’s something you’ve forgotten! And that’s to laugh and smile and dance and sing, When you’re feeling in the dumps, Don’t be silly chumps, Just purse your lips and whistle -- that’s the thing! And always look on the bright side of life Come on!

Cheer up, Brian. You know what they say. Some things in life are bad, They can really make you mad. Other things just make you swear and curse. When you’re chewing on life’s gristle, Don’t grumble, give a whistle! And this’ll help things turn out for the best

Always look on the bright side of life For life is quite absurd, And death’s the final word. You must always face the curtain with a bow! Forget about your sin -- give the audience a grin, Enjoy it, it’s the last chance anyhow! So always look on the bright side of death! Just before you draw your terminal breath. Life’s a piece of shit, When you look at it. Life’s a laugh and death’s a joke, it’s true, You’ll see it’s all a show, Keep ’em laughing as you go. Just remember that the last laugh is on you!

And always look on the bright side of life Always look on the bright side of life Come on guys, cheer up Always look on the bright side of life Always look on the bright side of life Worse things happen at sea you know Always look on the bright side of life I mean, what have you got to lose? you know, you come from nothing you’re going back to nothing what have you lost? Watch the excerpt from The Life of Brian and answer the questions. Bekijk en beantwoord de vragen. The film tells the story of Brian Cohen, a young Jewish man who is born on the same day as, and next door to, Jesus Christ, and is subsequently mistaken for the Messiah. “He’s not the Messiah, he’s a very naughty boy.” Why does she say this? To make them go away. To make them realise her son is not the Messiah: he’s an ordinary, naughty boy. They are following the wrong one. To confuse them. Her son is the Messiah, but he doesn’t want other people to know it. All of the above. What makes the mother change her mind? The group admiring her for being his mother. Nothing, she just wants them to go away. Her son, he wants to be seen. The fact that the crowd simply doesn’t want to leave. None of the above. What is the message of this Messiah? Do you agree with it? They’ve got it all wrong, they have to follow someone else. You’ve got to think for yourselves. We are all different: you can’t copy, you’ve got to work it out for yourself. They just have to leave him alone. Give two examples of (silly) humour that you see in this excerpt. _________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

16. Did you know? Birth order 65

Read the text and answer the questions. Lees en beantwoord de vragen.

Birth order influences personality Why is one brother a loud comedian and the other a silent thinker, while they both have the same genes? Some psychologists believe the secret to sibling personality differences lies in birth order: whether you are a first, middle, last-born or only child. Parents treat their child differently because of the spot it has in the family and each spot has its own challenges. Firstborns are the leader of the pack and often are structured, reliable and achievers. They want to be the best at everything they do and want to win the hearts of their parents.

The middle child often feels left out: they are not the oldest or the youngest, so who are they? The often are peoplepleasers, peacemakers and think friendships are very important. The “baby of the family is often the most outgoing and fun loving, but also the most manipulative and self-centred one. Being the only child is a unique position in a family. They never have to compete with siblings, which makes them like a superfirstborn. Only children tend to be mature, perfectionists, leaders.

Read the complete revolting rhyme about Little Red Riding Hood and the Wolf by Roald Dahl and answer the questions. Lees en beantwoord de vragen. Little Red Riding Hood and the Wolf As soon as Wolf began to feel That he would like a decent meal, He went and knocked on Grandma’s door. When Grandma opened it, she saw The sharp white teeth, the horrid grin, And Wolfie said, “May I come in?” Poor Grandmamma was terrified, “He’s going to eat me up!” she cried. And she was absolutely right. He ate her up in one big bite. But Grandmamma was small and tough, And Wolfie wailed, “That’s not enough! I haven’t yet begun to feel That I have had a decent meal!” He ran around the kitchen yelping, “I’ve got to have a second helping!” Then added with a frightful leer, “I’m therefore going to wait right here Till Little Miss Red Riding Hood Comes home from walking in the wood.” He quickly put on Grandma’s clothes, (Of course he hadn’t eaten those). He dressed himself in coat and hat. He put on shoes, and after that, He even brushed and curled his hair, Then sat himself in Grandma’s chair. In came the little girl in red. She stopped. She stared. And then she said, “What great big ears you have, Grandma.” “All the better to hear you with,” the Wolf replied. “What great big eyes you have, Grandma.” said Little Red Riding Hood. “All the better to see you with,” the Wolf replied. He sat there watching her and smiled. He thought, I’m going to eat this child. Compared with her old Grandmamma, She’s going to taste like caviar.

152

Unit 1 The life of Brian

Then Little Red Riding Hood said, “But Grandma, what a lovely great big furry coat you have on.” “That’s wrong!” cried Wolf. “Have you forgot To tell me what BIG TEETH I’ve got? Ah well, no matter what you say, I’m going to eat you anyway.” The small girl smiles. One eyelid flickers. She whips a pistol from her knickers. She aims it at the creature’s head, And bang bang bang, she shoots him dead. A few weeks later, in the wood, I came across Miss Riding Hood. But what a change! No cloak of red, No silly hood upon her head. She said, “Hello, and do please note My lovely furry wolfskin coat.”

Dear Brian I really like your Facebook page! What else do I like? I like computers, buses, families, lunches and videos. Here are some things I do not like: classes, sisters, aunts and faxes (they make such an awful noise). People think I am a bit strange, because I always list things. Of course, to you I am a stranger. But I am not strange! Best, Kurt Picture/Video
