• gevarieerde taaltaken omvat? Auteursteam T. Bergen, B. Frère, B. Komnenouic, J. Ooghe, L. Sallets, B. Van Gelder

Britons and their red genes
Britons have red genes
What do Prince Harry, Rupert Grint and Sarah Ferguson have in common? They’re all ginger heads – people with ginger hair. When Kate and William announced their pregnancy in the fall of 2012, speculations about the baby’s looks immediately started: the baby will have William’s famous Windsor ears according to some and Kate’s high forehead according to others. Some think – fear? – that the newborn might end up resembling Prince Harry, with a head of ginger hair. Read the text. Strange as it may seem, having a flaming bush of red hair is a typically British thing. In England, 6 per cent of people have red hair, in Scotland the rate is estimated 13 per cent. Across the rest of Europe, the figure is only around 4 per cent. According to a recent ground-breaking study of more than 5000 British people’s DNA indicates that four in ten Britons carry ‘silent’ genes for redheadedness. This means that they have a different hair colour, but that they carry the gene for red hair and this exposes them to a couple of increased health risks that affect red heads, such as increased sensitivity to What do Prince Harry, Rupert Grint and Sarah Ferguson have in common? pain, Parkinson’s disease and even Tourette’s syndrome. 11 What is the last concert / show / musical … you saw that is worth recommending?
You find out your best friend’s boy / girlfriend is cheating.
Why? Tell your class about it.
What? Why?
Write a text message revealing a cheater. To prove you can write a text message, you know the vocabulary about cheating, you can choose the right register for a text message to your best friend, you can show subtlety whilst communicating in a foreign language. How? 1) Work in pairs. 2) Decide what information you need to give your friend to convince him / her. 3) What information can’t you give away if you want to stay anonymous and you don’t want to cause more hurt than is necessary? 4) Write a first draft of your message. 5) Read it aloud. Is it convincing? Is it subtle enough? 6) Add or change your text till you think it is the perfect message. What matters? Subtlety, use of the right register, use of vocabulary about cheating. Think twice! Let your classmates read your message. Do they like it? Take notes of their feedback. What can you do better next time?

“Back when I first saw Damien play years ago he explained the meaning of the song, and it took me a while to understand the relevance. I didn’t get it at the time, but luckily someone taped the show and I was able to listen back to it. The Blower in question wasn’t a clarinet teacher, but the cockney rhyming slang for the telephone (Stick with me, I know it sounds ambiguous!). Before he was in Juniper Damien worked at a call centre selling mortgages and loans, and spent all day on the telephone. He grew sick of speaking to people for 8 hours a day without seeing anyone’s face, and he began to fantasise about the people behind the many voices he heard. One summer day he phoned a house and a girl with a melodic soft, sweet voice answered the phone. He was calling for her father, but he wasn’t in. Protocol said he should have ended the call and phoned back another time, but he was mesmerized and enchanted by her voice and ended up chatting to her for over an hour.

Damien began a secret relationship of sorts with the girl, always calling when he knew her father wouldn’t be home just so they could talk, despite knowing that it could get him sacked. He dreamed of her at night, daydreamed about her all day long.

Read the poem and answer the questions.
The teacher will divide you into groups. Each group gets a role card telling what you did on one day last week. You have to find out three things about what other people in the class did. First decide as a group what questions you need to ask to get the information you need.
My Grandmother Elizabeth Jennings
e.g. Did you go to the cinema last Saturday? Elizabeth Jennings • 18 July 1926 – 26 October 2001 • English poet • “Time does not heal, it makes a half-stitched scar, that can be broken and again you feel grief as total as in its first hour.”

She kept an antique shop - or it kept her. Among Apostle spoons and Bristol glass, The faded silks, the heavy furniture, She watched her own reflection in the brass* Salvers* and silver bowls, as if to prove Polish was all, there was no need of love. And I remember how I once refused To go out with her, since I was afraid. It was perhaps a wish not to be used Like antique objects. Though she never said That she was hurt, I still could feel the guilt Of that refusal, guessing how she felt. Later, too frail to keep a shop, she put All her best things in one narrow room. The place smelt old, of things too long kept shut, The smell of absences where shadows come That can’t be polished. There was nothing then To give her own reflection back again.

of worship, the sports field, the kitchen, nursery, or our bedrooms. It’s not only the right thing to do. Simply put, women’s emancipation is also key to our own happiness because the ways that we men have collectively constructed and individually internalised men’s power is not only devastating to the women we love but, in a different and paradoxical way, is devastating to men ourselves. And so we must fight for gender equality and against all forms of abuse and violence against women. This has been an area of my own volunteer work in co-founding White Ribbon, a campaign to engage men and boys to work to end violence against women that has spread to seventy or eighty countries.

At the same time we need to transform what it means to be a man. To embrace the diverse possibilities of manhood… of humanness. To raise our sons to not be afraid of emotions or of being outed as not real men. Perhaps there is no more important place to start than the transformation of fatherhood. I don’t want fathers helping out. I want fathers doing an equal share of parenting. So yes, let’s talk about our experiences of being men. But, actually, let’s stop forcing destructive and self-destructive versions of manhood on each other. Women, men, children, and the planet will be much better for it. Unit 7 Male / female / … ?

Julia has been my friend for over 10 years. I have known her since I was little. Recently she and her family have moved to a house in the same street and now we see each other almost every day. For the last 5 years, Julia and I have played tennis every Thursday, except when I was in Belgium. Julia is a better player than I am but in the last few weeks she has had some trouble with her arm and has found it hard to play a full game. She has visited the doctor several times but he doesn’t know what is causing the pain. Julia has decided to take a break from tennis, so her arm can recover. It’s going to be lonely at the tennis club without her.

You communicate like a woman! This doesn’t exactly mean you ARE a woman. You just like to talk things out and express your emotions freely. You’re a good listener, and you’re non-judgmental with your advice. Communication is how you connect with people. You’re always up for a long talk, no matter how difficult the subject matter is.

You communicate like a man! This doesn’t exactly mean that you ARE a man, it means that when you communicate, you like to get to the point. You’re not afraid to say what’s on your mind – and leave it at that. Talking about your emotions tires you. You rather keep them to yourself. You prefer solving problems immediately rather than feeling bad about them. Your favourite quote: Words empty as the wind are best left unsaid. (Homerus)

256 Unit 5 Pride and prejudice

Do animals have feelings?
64 Read the text and answer the questions.
One of the hottest questions in the study of animal behaviour is, “Do animals have emotions?” And the simple and correct answer is, “Of course they do.” Just look at them, listen to them and, if you dare, smell the odours* that pour out when they interact with friends and foes*. Look at their faces, tails, bodies and, most importantly, their eyes. What we see on the outside tells us a lot about what’s happening inside animals’ heads and hearts. Animal emotions aren’t all that mysterious. When I first began my studies researchers spent their time finding out if dogs, cats, chimpanzees and other animals felt anything. Since feelings don’t fit under a microscope, these scientists usually didn’t find any, and, as I like to say, I’m glad I wasn’t their dog! But now prestigious* scientific journals publish essays* on joy* in rats, grief* in elephants and empathy* in mice and no one blinks*. The question of real importance is not whether animals have emotions, but why animal emotions have evolved*. Simply put, emotions serve as a social glue* to bond animals with one another. And these relationships happen between very different animals, even animals who normally eat each other. Such is the case for Aochan, a rat snake, who befriended a dwarf hamster named Gohan at Tokyo’s Mutsugoro Okoku Zoo, and a lioness in northern Kenya who adopted a baby oryx (usually an appetiser* before a larger meal) on five different occasions. It’s bad biology to argue against the existence* of animal emotions.

12a Read the text on Boxing Day. In the United Kingdom the 26th of December is called Boxing Day. It is unclear where the name Boxing Day comes from. Some say that it has something to do with Christmas boxes or Christmas presents, others think that it comes from the old habit of placing boxes to collect* money for the poor in churches. Traditional Boxing Day activities, next to spending time with family and friends, are horse racing and football. Until 2004, fox hunting was also a very popular Boxing Day activity, but now it is forbidden by law to chase* foxes with dogs. Hunters will still dress in red hunting coats, but the dogs now follow fake trails* and not real foxes.

Taking notes
Books Buzz
As you can only remember so much, it is important to take notes while you are doing your research. You need to find a system that works for you, but there are some general guidelines: • Make sure there is a system. If you scribble down just everything, you can better not take notes at all.
Shuffle 4, Books Buzz
Shuffle 4
– What is your character? Are you chaotic? Use a notebook – at least everything is contained at the same place. Or use electronic files, as they can be revised easily. Are you very visual? Think about a mind map. – In what ways does your mind prioritise? Do you want to arrange ideas, facts, just numbers, a timeline … Is it important for you to have a hierarchy? Start with simple things. Just outlining your information can already make a big difference. – Make sure that you know where the information came from, in order to avoid plagiarism! – Don’t be afraid to use colours, headings … to make structure clear for yourself. • Write the following subdivisions down, they might help you along to start taking notes:
Maar met onderzoekscompetenties moet je natuurlijk vooral actief aan de slag. Dat kunnen de leerlingen aan de hand van het onderzoeksproject rond literatuur: Books Buzz. Die vind je terug in het Lerarenpakket.
main topic – key words – summary – conclusions – main ideas – direct quotes – your ideas – your conclusions • Paraphrase. This means that you write down the information in your own words, you do not copy or quote. This is a good way to check whether you really understand what you are reading, watching or hearing. Paraphrasing takes some time while doing it, but you easily win this time back later in the process, because you have already thought things through while paraphrasing them. • Be selective! – – – –
Is this really useful? Is there a link with your research questions? Does it provide evidence? Is it not too difficult or too simple?

Reliable sources, the CRAAP-test
Are your sources credible and useful, or are they a bunch of crap?? When doing research for an assignment or a final paper, you will be looking for sources that are current, accurate and appropriate. Whether you consult a source in print or (especially) on the Internet, there are five criteria that can help you evaluate the accuracy and credibility of the information presented. These criteria are currency, relevance, authority, accuracy and purpose. Together they make up the CRAAP-test you will find below. The CRAAP Test is a list of questions that help you determine if the sources you found are useful for you. Different criteria will be more or less important depending on what you are looking for. CRITERIA
PRINT SOURCE
WEB SOURCE
Currency
Look for date of publication. When was the info published? Could the info be out-of-date?
Look for date last updated. Is anyone updating the info? Could it be out-of-date? Are there a lot of dead links?
Relevance
How well does it answer your questions? Is it intended for high-school/students? Does it make sense to use this source?
Same as print.
Authority
Look for author qualifications and affiliations. Is the author qualified to write about this topic? Who are the publishers?
Same as print. Is there contact information, such as a publisher or e-mail address? Does the domain (.com .edu .gov .org .net) tell you anything about the author or source?
Accuracy
Correctness of the work. Where does the information come from? Is the information supported by evidence? Has the information been reviewed? Are there spelling, grammar, or other typographical errors?
Same as print.
Purpose
What are the author’s intentions? What is the author’s point of view? Does the point of view appear objective and impartial?

Shuffle This is een verademing! Your parents have a very good idea of what they expect you to be and they are rather clear about it too. You think it’s time they learn that they are not perfect themselves, so you design the ideal parent. Work in pairs. What? Why?
Design the ideal parent and write his / her description or definition down. To prove you can be creative and original. To prove you can work in pairs. To prove you know how to write a description / definition. To prove you know how to present something. How? 1) Work in pairs. Brainstorm about the topics you are given below. What is your ideal parent? What amount of parents is ideal? Take notes. 2) Summarise your notes in a description / definition of the ideal parent. 3) Brainstorm about the five rules your ideal parent will abide by. Take notes. 4) Summarise into five rules what’s most important. 5) Make a short PowerPoint presentation about your ideal parent and your five rules. If necessary, include pictures or clips. 6) Rehearse your presentation before you present it to your classmates. 7) Present your result to your classmates. 8) Rank the parents from most popular to least popular. What matters? Your originality and creativity. Your language and grammar. Your presentation skills. Think twice! Where does your parent rank? Why? What does that tell you?

Hotel Receptionist When guests arrive at a hotel or call to make a booking, the hotel receptionist is often the first person they speak to. It is the job of the front desk staff to make sure that the guests are taken care of and are made to feel welcome during their stay. The hotel reception staff must make sure of this, or else the guests may not return if they experience poor service. In large hotels or chain hotels, they often use an answering service to handle the booking of reservations to assist the front desk staff.

18
What do they do? In both large and small hotels, the front desk staff use a computer to handle guest arrival and check out. Many hotels often have more than one person working at the front desk to assist with these tasks. Upon arrival, the receptionists give the guests a room and arrange for an employee to help guests transport their luggage to their room if needed. Throughout their guest’s stay, the front desk staff will be the guest’s main point of contact with the hotel. If the guest has any concerns, complaints, or special requests, they will speak with the front desk staff. Another duty of the front desk staff is to receive any phone calls or packages that come in and relay them to the appropriate guest. Unit 5 Who let the dogs out!?

Sanju, is that you? O hi, Sally! Long time no see! How are you? I’m fine, and you? … Are you kidding? I love going to musicals! … So do I. But today’s performance wasn’t that great, was it? … And the boy who played Peter Pan forgot his lines a couple of times. It was awful! Sally: Maybe. … I really felt a part of the fairy tale. Sanju: Fair enough. Hey Sally, I have to go. My mom is waiting for me. … Sally: Next Saturday… Ooooh, I’m sorry, I can’t. … Maybe another time? Sanju: That would be great! Nice seeing you! Sally: Nice seeing you too! Bye!

I think all the fancy dress costumes and the music and the singing is just brilliant. I’m visiting one of my friends in Leeds then. But I think the atmosphere was fantastic. Not too bad, thanks. I didn’t know you liked musicals? Would you like to come to my birthday party next Saturday? The girl who played Wendy sang extremely bad!

What’s it all about? Directed by Gary Ross and based on the best-selling novel by Suzanne Collins, The Hunger Games is set in a dystopian* future where, each year, the Capitol selects a boy and a girl from each of the twelve districts to fight to the death on live television in an event called The Hunger Games. When her 12 year old sister Prim (Willow Shields) is selected to participate, teenager Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence) volunteers to take her place and finds herself paired with ex-classmate Peeta Mellark (Josh Hutcherson). When they arrive in the Capitol, Katniss and Peeta are trained and coached by a team that includes ex-contes-

tant Haymitch (Woody Harrelson), skilled stylist Cinna (Lenny Kravitz) and twittering PR flack* Effie Trinket (Elizabeth Banks), who pitch them as ‘the star-crossed lovers from District 12’ in order to make them stand out amongst the other contestants. However, once in the arena, several of the contestants band together to form a gang and Katniss has to use every survival instinct in order to stay alive. The Good Jennifer Lawrence is wonderful as Katniss, delivering a complex performance and managing to convey the book’s first-person monologue with just the look in her eyes. Hutcherson is equally good and there’s strong support from
Harrelson, Kravitz and Wes Bentley. Despite the lengthy running time, Ross keeps a decent pace* throughout, aided by some impressive editing* and camerawork, particularly in the use of tight close-ups. He also sets up some breathtaking scenes recreating all the key moments from the book.
The Great The theme of an oppressed nation that is kept entertained and docile* by a reality TV show is extremely well-timed. Also, it’s refreshing to see a blockbuster with a script this intelligent. That said, the film isn’t entirely without problems: Ross overdoes* the shakey-cam in pla-

ces, some of the violence has been clumsily edited and the script expects that everyone has already read the book. For example, there’s a frustrating lack of background detail that often results in a loss of the book’s dramatic and emotional impact. WORTH SEEING?
A few issues aside, The Hunger Games is an exciting, intelligent and beautifully designed sci-fi thriller with a wonderful performance from Jennifer Lawrence. Recommended.

• How to: specifieke, eerder zakelijke onderwerpen (telefoneren, fomulieren invullen, instructie geven, facturen, solliciteren …)
