Making plans!
Hi, I’m Simon Bass. I’m fourteen years old. I come from Brighton where I live with my family. I have one brother and one sister. Their names are Thomas and Annie. I’m currently living in Belgium where I’m in the third year of secondary school. I love it here but I do miss my family and friends. My hobbies are basketball, skateboarding and playing guitar. I play basketball every Wednesday and Saturday, even here in Belgium. My favourite food is pizza. I love Gotye, you probably know him from the song ‘Somebody that I used to know’. If there is anything else you want to know about me, just ask.

29 Englishness. What is typical or characteristic of England and its people?
Read the following extracts of newspaper articles and find the stereotypes. 1) complain about the weather – 2) being polite – 3) good sense of humour – 4) good table manners – 5) binge drinking – 6) suspicious of anything foreign Most people believe it is fine to answer a mobile phone during dinner. Most adults also think it is acceptable to talk with their mouth full and start eating before others’ food has arrived. Leaving the table before everyone has finished and even picking at food with fingers is no longer frowned upon. Half of people admit they pay little or no attention to manners drilled into them by their parents when they were younger. In general, most English are polite and have good manners, so it is quite a surprise to see that a quarter of Brits no longer think table manners are important.
Could I have a pound of bananas, please? Certainly. Thank you. That’s £1 please. Thank you, here you are. Thank you. Here’s your change. Do you need a bag? Oh, yes, please. Sorry, I forgot to bring one. Thank you. Thank you, goodbye.

The English can be suspicious of anything foreign and don’t integrate easily when they go to other countries. This is why in Spain you find English pubs and cafés serving a full English breakfast and fish and chips. And they don’t see the need to speak a language other than English.
The street smells of urine and lager, police struggle to break up a fight outside the Walkabout bar and a paramedic bundles a comatose girl onto a wheelchair. But it’s a quiet night for 20-year-old Naomi Jenkins. She has ‘only’ drunk three shots of peach schnapps, cider and three shots of Jägermeister (during a drinking game called I Have Never) and still feels ‘a bit sober’. Her friend Hannah Freeman, 19, was punched in a fight and stumbles about swearing and searching for a bathroom.
Of all the characteristics, good and bad, for which the English are known in the outside world, our sense of humour is one of the best-known and most positively regarded. The theory apparently goes that not only do we have more humour overall than other nations, it is consistently funnier too.
Here comes the rain: why we secretly love it when it’s wet. Another year, another sodden summer. We like nothing better than to moan about our dreadful weather. But what if we just learned to love our rainy days?
30 Write a short paragraph about one or more characteristics of Belgian people. Try to use some humour. You can add a picture or drawing to illustrate the characteristic.

12 Shuffle Life at a boarding school 43a Read the following text about life at St Mary’s boarding school. A typical day in the life of a boarding student at St Mary’s 7.00 am – Wake up. The house mothers wake us up each morning by knocking on our door and saying ‘Good morning’. It is pretty much like home. We are not allowed to go to breakfast in your pyjamas, so most of us shower and get ready for school before breakfast. Some of the girls go to breakfast early. You can also have sport training before school, so this makes your mornings a little busier but they also have a ‘grab and go’ breakfast if you are really busy. 8.00 am – Breakfast finishes. We have lots of different things for breakfast including cooked breakfast, fresh fruit salad, muesli, yoghurt and flavoured milk. Our Chef (Eric) is French and he is great and always wants to make us happy. We have a food comment box to write suggestions, and a recipe of the month competition where someone’s recipe from home is cooked for everyone. 8.40 am – We leave for school. Dressed to impress in our wonderful uniforms! 8.45 am – The school day commences.* We have classes in so many different subjects it is fantastic. We really do have a lot of fun and although the work is quite tough our teachers are all really lovely and help us along the way. 10.50 am – Recess. We come back to the boarding house to collect our recess* snack where Mrs Campbell and Mrs Pendergrast are always there with a smile to say hello. 1.10 pm – Lunch. Lunch is served outside of the boarding house and we all sit on the grassed area outside to have our lunch. This area is known as the Boarders Lawn since it is so full of boarders every lunchtime from every year group. We often see our ‘Big Sisters’ at this time who check that we are doing OK. 3.35 pm – The school day ends. Afternoon tea is served in the courtyard. It’s always yummy and it’s a time to sit and relax with friends from lots of different year groups and the boarding staff. Then we often have sports, or Sewing Club or Art Club to rush off to or we have leisure time. The Café is open in the boarding house which is like a tuck shop and on Mondays and Thursdays we collect our washing that has been done for us and check to see if we have got a Tidy Room Award. 5.30pm – 6.15pm – Dinner is served. There is hot food, as well as a salad bar every day. 6.30pm – 8.30pm – Prep begins. This is supervised in the dining room for us and we have four tutors* who work alongside us to help us with our work. These tutors have all been to St Mary’s as boarders so they know how hard some of the work can be. We are all learning a lot. The tutors are really great. There is also a Maths Club on Monday night and an English Club on Wednesday night when the teachers come to help us. 9.00 pm – Bedtime. We are checked at this time and need to be ready for bed at 9.00pm. Often we will then read or chat with our roommate for a little while about our days. 9.15 pm – Lights out. Exhausted, we jump into bed and soon fall asleep, ready to do it all again! to commence: beginnen recess: pauze a tutor: een privéleraar

46a Read the text. Would you like to go to a public school such as Eton College? Why (not)?
Independent schools and state schools in the UK – What’s in a name? In the United Kingdom, an independent school, also called a private school, is an exclusive school, mostly for boys or girls only. People have to pay a fee if they want their child to attend this kind of school. Among the independent or private schools, some schools are even more expensive, prestigious and exclusive. Those schools are called public schools, such as Eton College in Eton, England and Westminster School in London. Traditionally, these were boys’ boarding schools for children aged between 13 and 18. They are considered as an exclusive school for the elite, as only wealthy boys with great academic achievements are allowed in. parents who want to give their children this kind of exclusive education have to pay a lot of money. State schools are funded by the government. Many parents and their children choose this kind of education because they simply cannot afford to send their children to a public school.
