Daring rascals steal from kids

Gunfight suspects denied bail Justin Steyn

Justin Steyn Three minutes was what it took a gang of heartless thieves to allegedly clear out a total of 40 laptops from Laerskool Warmbad, disrupting a major nerve centre of the learners’ education. The loot was estimated at an overall R260 000. Footage from the school’s CCTV cameras showed one of the alleged thieves tiptoeing from inside the premises carrying what looked like laptops, apparently headed for a getaway vehicle. According to Captain Annemarie Smith of the Bela-Bela SAPS, the allegedly wellplanned heist was conducted by five men on the evening of Wednesday, 2 July. Smith said it was possible the intruders had placed the school under surveillance

for a while, ahead of their daring theft. Investigators have reason to believe the theft was the result if immaculate planning. “According to the CCTV footage from the school, the men were able to take all of the laptops within a matter of three minutes. Our investigations are on-going and we remain confident,” she said. The schools’ headmaster, Hennie Coetzee, said he was alerted about the break-in at close to midnight on the fateful Wednesday. “I was alerted about the break in by our security company at about 23:51. I immediately went to check on what had happened, and I was told that there had been a break-in and that the laptops had been stolen. This in a matter of minutes,” he said. Coetzee said the laptops were a crucial

part of the school’s curriculum. “The laptops were used by learners from Grades 1 to 7. They have been robbed of this opportunity because of these selfish men,” he said. Despite the tragedy, Coetzee said there was hope the alleged thieves would be brought to book. “We found the lock at the main enterance into the school had been damaged, and that was how they managed to gain entry. Our CCTV footage shows the faces of the men involved and we remain hopeful they will be caught and brought to book.” This was the second time the school had suffered a loss of laptops in just over a year. On Thursday, 9 June 2016, 40 laptops were stolen from the same classroom. Police have not ruled out a possible link between the two incidents.

Justin Steyn August month blew into the Waterberg with a number of road accidents. That is the bad news. The good news, ‘though, is that no serious injuries were reported. According to the Waterberg’s Advanvanced Pramedics Assistance (APA) spokesman, Andy Gill, there were no serious injuries reported. All the accidents took place on Friday, 4 August. Gill reported that in Modimolle a light motor vehicle accident occurred outside the Modimolle Correctional Services Centre. He said no injuries were reported, but

Suspects arrested following a street gunfight in Bela-Bela have been denied bail. Hilton Marks (37) and Mawanda Ngangaza (24), both from Port Elizabeth in the Eastern Cape, face charges of armed robbery. The failed bail application was a sequesl to an alleged exchange of gunfire between the suspects and a local resident, whereby the latter was allegedly robbed of an undisclosed amount of cash, on 11 July. In what unfolded as a true-life drama, at the height of the gunfight the two suspects fled, with the victim giving chase, and apprehended the suspects armed with a pistol. His alleged accomplice was tracked down to the vicinity of the local municipal offices. Investigators have indicated in the charge sheet they were probing the possibility of the men linked to other crimes in the Waterberg. Marks and Ngangaza were expected to make another appearance in the Bela-Bela Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday, 30 August. Awie Oberholzer of the Bela-Bela Crime Support neighbourhood watch said the structure noted a steady increase of people reporting hearing gunshots in the immediate vicinity, but cautioned residents against potential paranoia.

those involved were treated for shock at the scene. On the N1 highway near Kraanskop, a vehicle lost control due to a burst tyre, Gill said the vehicle skidded off-road into an embankment, but the two occupants escaped with minor injuries. At the Radium supermarket, eight people were treated with minor to moderate injuries after a collision had taken place between two vehicles. Gill said the cause of the accident was currently under investigation. In recent weeks a couple of serious crashes were reported in parts of the Waterberg, whereby three people died, and several others were hospitalised with various degrees of injuries.

Security personnel from across Limpopo converged on a recreation park in central Modimolle to launch a local branch of an independent trade union on Saturday, 5 August. The Limpopo Security Officers’ Forum (Limso) branch launch was attended by the labour movement’s interim leaders from across the province. Limso secretary-general, Ben Rasebane from Bakenberg, said an application had been dispatched to the Department of Labour to register the fledgling union. Rasebane said a formal leadership collective was to be elected at an inaugural congress planned for a yet to be decided venue and date. He said there was a gap in the security industry for an exclusive union, as these

workers were largely affiliated to unions in the municipal or other related sector. Rasebane charged there were crucial challenges within the security industry, whereby the public and private sector chose to outsource this particular service, thus leaving workers vulnerable to practices that were not labour-friendly. “Many of the (outsourced) companies fail to register workers for benefits such as the provident fund, often leaving their families destitute in the event of death or serious injury,” he said. He said in March the union presented a memorandum to Premier Stanley Mathabatha’s Polokwane office, and also the Private Security Industry Regulatory Association (Psira), pressing home demands for, among others, the blacklisting of non-compliant companies. Limso has a claimed membership of upwards of 400 across the province.

Huge psychological boost for the ANC at Vaalwater Mzamane Ringane The ANC won a major battle of minds after sailing home in by-elections in two major centres of the Waterberg. The ANC emerged victorious in ward one at Modimolle/Mookgophong, and ward nine in the Mogalakwena Municipality on Wednesday, 2 August. Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa campaigned for the ANC. Photo: TK Mashaba

This after a strong challenge from both the DA and EFF. The DA on its part brought in national leader Mmusi Maimane, who went door-to-door at Vaalwater. The stakes were so high that the ANC also brought in Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa to campaign at Vaalwater. Limpopo ANC secretary, Nocks Seabi, congratulated his party’s candidates for winning the confidence of their communities. “We expect from them nothing less than total commitment,” he said. Moswana Stoffel Seodisa of the ANC won in Vaalwater, by more than a thousand votes

(64,42 percentage margin). Klaas Mabula of the EFF was the closest at 557 votes and the DA’s Eric Aphane got 402 votes. The ward previously belonged to the ANC and became vacant when the incumbent resigned. In Ward 9, Lucas Mooka of the ANC won at 79.45%. Mooka was contesting with Titus Mokoka of the DA, the EFF’s Sello Sinwamadi, and independent candidate William Mafora. This ward also belonged to the ANC and became vacant when the incumbent passed away.

Mayor Jeremiah Ngobeni wants Zuma to stay

National Assembly Speaker Baleka Mbete. Photo: Google

Lizzy Bapela By the time you read this, the political landscape in the Waterberg and elsewhere might have changed beyond recognition. If Bela-Bela Mayor Jeremiah Ngobeni had it his way, the status quo with regards to the future of the clearly embattled President Zuma was going nowhere. Period. Speaking just after the groundbreaking announcement by National Assembly Speaker, Baleka Mbete, that the DAsponsored mid-week motion of no

confidence in Number One would be conducted thropugh a secret ballot, Ngobeni swore “there is no way ANC MPs will vote against the president.” He charged that ANC lawmakers were expected to vote “correctly”, meaning they were to vote against the removal of the president. This was indeed a brave statement from the mayor, considering widespread fears that the opposite could well be the truth. To the contrary, EFF Modimolle Councillor Silas Marema predicted that by the time you read this, Zuma would be history.

“We are more than happy the (allegedly) corrupt Zuma will be removed tomorrow (Thursday). Even though we are not sure yet who will be the next president it is fine, as long as Zuma is gone. We will talk at length after the new president has been announced,” he said. Modimolle Speaker and DA strongman, Johan Abrie, said the speaker’s decision for a secret ballot took him by complete surprise. According to him, Mbete “has no reputation or history of making sound decisions.”

Abrie was speaking from the National Assembly precinct in Cape Town on Monday 7 August, where he had gone on DA business. He said he spoke to many politicians ahead of the announcement of the secret ballot. “She obviously did the right thing and we commend her. We also commend (ANC MP) Makhosi Khoza for her call to fellow ANC MPs to vote for the motion,” he said. Khoza is one of a growing number of ANC leaders who have publicly called for the removal of the incumbent president.

Miss Ikageng Youth Centre contest

Poetic Justice for Woman Justin Steyn Women’s Month was set to have an emotional new meaning for the extraordinarily brave attempted rape victim, Palesa Qoboza, a resident of Bela-Bela, who found some form of closure after the culprit was found guilty and sentenced on Monday, 31 July. The BEAT has to place on record Qoboza insisted on her name and picture being published, as a deeply personal attempt to expose the plight of vulnerable women. After testimonies by several witnesses, presiding magistrate, Gerhard Olivier, found Meshack Chirwa guilty of sexual assault and fined him R3000 or six months imprisonment. Chirwa chose the fine option. In addition the court meted out an 18months imprisonment sentence, suspended for five years. Qoboza had testified that Chirwa attempted to sexually assault her in her house, on Tuesday, 21 February. Qoboza said in her attempt to avoid being raped, she pretended to be co-operative. A passing police vehicle and passersby intervened, and Chirwa was arrested. He made his first appearance before the Bela-Bela Magistrates Court on Thursday, 23 February, and was released on bail of R500. Chirwa pleaded not guilty to the charge brought against him on Tuesday, 30

May. The case was postponed to Thursday, 29 June, and following a month of testimonies by witnesses, and cross examination by the State and defence lawyer, Olivier ruled that Chirwa’s defence had lacked substance. “I am happy that the court ruled in my favour,” she said. She further testified that the experience had motivated her to be more actively involved in campaigns and courses to support vulnerable women and children.

TK Mashaba Bela-Bela’s Ikageng Youth Centre was scheduled to host a beauty pageant on Saturday, 19 August. The Beat contest, together with a Mr Ikageng Youth Centre showdown, was billed to take place at the multipurpose centre at extension six.

According to the coordinator of Ikageng Youth Centre, Tebogo Modiba, the contests were aimed at inspiring young people, to garner confidence and self-esteeem. “(Within the context of fair play) Judges will be from outside Bela-Bela, and we will also feature motivational speakers,” he said. There will be prizes galore on the day, including trophies. A Mr Ikageng Youth Centre was also scheduled to be held on the same day. Bodiba said the organisers were busy selling the idea at local schools, so as to widen the net of wannabe participants. Contestants shall be between the ages of 15 to 25 years. Registration forms can be obtained at an outlet in the township, or alternatively by making contact with Modiba on 071 283 3058. Last month Johannesburg-based events manager, Cynthia Baloyi, unveiled another beauty contest for the township, to be held on 2 September at the Golden Lantern hall in BelaBela town.

Breastfeeding takes centre stage

DA assures rural folk of accountability Lizzy Bapela

World Breastfeeding Week campaigners pose for a group picture with a suckling baby and its mom. Photo: Mzamane Ringane

Mzamane Ringane The age-old debate around suckling babies took centre stage on the occasion to kick-start this year’s annual World Breastfeeding Week. Health authorities in the Waterberg rolled out a campaign on Wednesday 2 August, to drum up support for breastfeeding mothers, be they housewives or working class. Shopping complexes in downtown Modimolle were targeted as nerve centres to

spread the message. The campaign was part of worldwide activities, focusing on encouraging women to breastfeed their babies for the first six months from birth. The department organised a dialogue with members of the community, enlightening working mothers on the possibilities of breastfeeding even during working hours. Working mothers were protected by the Basic Cconditions of Employment Act, with regards to having time to breastfeed during

working hours. Shiko Mokgokone of the Waterberg District’s Department of Health said breastfeeding employees could either opt for two 30-minute breaks, or a full hour, depending on negotiations and agreement with the employer. “Mothers do not have to be disadvantaged just because they are working,” he said. Mokgokone said more needed to be done to ensure public spaces, including the workplace, were baby-friendly.

The DA has recommitted itself to hold government accounatble in terms of land reform and the broader welfare of rural communities. Speaking during a visit by a high-profile party delegation in Vaalwater recently, the provincial leader and spokesperson for agriculture, Jacques Smalle, said land reform was the key to achieve redress among rural communities. “The DA believes that land reform is instrumental to achieve redress in rural communities, and to promote economic inclusion to uplift rural people out of poverty, and we will be relentless in holding government accountable for failed land reform,” Smalle said. The delegation to Vaalwater was spearheaded by DA shadow minister of agriculture, forestry and fisheries, Annette Steyn, and also included Mayor Marlene van Staden, of the DA-led ModimolleMookgophong Local Municipality. Smalle noted the continued concerns regarding job losses in the agricultural sector, and the increase in farm attacks. The National Assembly’s Standing Committee of Public Accounts (SCOPA) chairperson, Themba Godi, was to be asked to probe the failure of certain communitybased projects in Vaalwater.

TK Mashaba Hoërskool Nystroom learner, Karabo Manyane (18), beat several hundred of her contemporaries to emerge the winner of R10 000 from a contest sponsored by a

commercial bank. The competition required of entrants to write a letter of motivation as to what they would do with the sponsored amount. In her motivation, Manyane said she would invest such an amount in purchasing and donating sanitary towels to the most needy. That won her a whopping R10 000 from a competition open to all age groups nationwide. Manyane moved swiftly and purchased hundreds of sanitary towels, which she planned to give out to girls invited for a career day, at the workingclass Apostolic Faith Mission Church in Mookgophong, on Saturday, 12 August. The proud winner is a Grade 11 learner, who has a passion for community work.

Some of the learners to attend extra classes. Photo: TK Mashaba TK Mashaba A collective of educators at Bela-Bela have unveiled an ambitious programme to assist high school leaners ahead of the year-end exams. The Bela-Bela Upgrading Centre-High Schools Programme started with extra afterschool classes on Tuesday 1 August. The classes are offered to Grades 8 up to 12, with Bela-Bela High School as the chosen venue. Co-ordinator Gideon “Zwakala” Mokoma said in a statement the programme was to

be spearheaded by Naomi Sono, a veteran educator with a career dating back 20 years. “She is a highly-principled educator,” he said. The programme was designed to offer maths classes to Grade 8 and 9 learners, and maths literature to Grades 10 and 11. The co-ordinators would also dedicate the after-school classes to Grade 12 learners, offering maths literature, chemistry, history, accounting, agriculture, geography, physics, economics, history and life sciences. Learners who wish to participate are advised to register for the classes by contacting Mokoma on 073 488 2685.

Roodepoort’s cuddly cats with a hundred lives Justin Steyn A group of volunteers assisted in a project that helps to better the living conditions of a cat shelter managed by feline lover, Gerda du Plessis, on Saturday, 5 August. Du Plessis has been managing the Roodepoort-based cat homestead from her smallholding for the past fourteen years, taking care of more than a hundred cats. According to her, the majority of the cats were mainly throwaways from the community. “The majority of these cats are dropped off by people around Bela-Bela, claiming they can no longer afford to look after them. I do not believe in saying no to a

homeless animal, and always take them in,” she said. However, due to financial challenges, du Plessis said that she could afford to look after these animals. “I live alone and look after the cats myself. It is not always affordable to feed so many cats, and keeping their enclosures clean, as I have a full-time job as well,” she said. Fortunately, du Plessis’s plea for help was heard by two local organizations, which opted to assist. Project Feline was started by Limpopo Crime Intervention (LCI) from Bela-Bela, and aims to encourage members of the community to volunteer their time at the shelter.

‘We heard of Du Plessis problem and opted to assist,” said the organization’s provincial head, Ettienne Khun. Another well-known organization, Change for Bela-Bela, assisted in the project, too. “The facility was in a very bad state and in

urgent need of a clean-up. It was no easy task to complete but everybody pushed through until the very end,” said the organization’s founder NJ van Heerden. Despite the help received, he noted concern over the lack of community involvement.

MEC graces Waterberg during provincial roadshow Lizzy Bapela The Waterberg formed part of a whistlestop tour of the broader province by Limpopo MEC for Education, Ishmael Kgetjepe. The tour was aimed at information-sharing and ongoing efforts to create a climate condusive to proper education. The visit in the Waterberg was hosted at Mookgopong Primary School on Tuesday, 2 August. During the engagements the MEC met with school principals from the 10 districts. Kgetjepe reported back to the educators on progress with regards to programmes such as curriculum implementation, infrastructure improvement, finance management and human resources, among others. Departmental spokesperson Naledzani Rasila said the sessions were aimed at empowering principals with strategic information.

Ward councilor Kobus Van Der Merve. Photo: TK Mashaba TK Mashaba Residents of the edgy Mountain View (Spa Park) in Bela-Bela were this week keenly awaiting a response from the Housing Development Agency (HDA). Ward Councilor Kobus Van Der Merve (DA) said members of the community threatened to take to the streets should their demands for housing fail to be addressed. In recent weeks Mountain View erupted into chaos with residents blockading main

roads with burning tyres, due to a dispute over the same housing issue. Bela-Bela Mayor Jeremiah Nghobeni had also promised to look into the matter, although it appears the city fathers have passed on the matter to the HDA. The unrest was triggered by reports that the authorities had allegedly reneged on a promise to build a total of 500 RDP houses for the homeless. The authorities, it was alleged, had arbitrarily reduced this to 250 housing units.

Soccer lovers are sad after SAB League

WoF Limpopo records 50 wildfires Lizzy Bapela Working on Fire in Limpopo has thus far reported upwards of 50 wildfires across the province. With the high rise of wildifres in the province in the first week of August, more WoF teams have been on high alert and ready to be dispatched. From Tuesday, 1 August, WoF teams have been sent out to attend to 13 fires, of which nine of these were reported in the Waterberg areas of Modimolle, Alma, BelaBela and Thabazimbi. “The amount of rain we had in the province has resulted in heavy fuel load, and this causes us to expect a very difficult winter fire season,” said WoF provincial spokesperson, Matema Gwangwa. Landowners were urged to get into contact with WoF to assist them with the

development of integrated fire management services. These include, amongst others, prescribed burning, fuel load reduction, community fire awareness, early detection and fire suppression plans. WoF further urged communities to be more vigilant during the dry season, and not to start unnecessary fires. People were also advised to clear up rubble from their properties, and houses next to grasslands need to ensure there were sufficient fire breaks. “We also ask people to cut down overhanging tree branches close to their properties, and also to clean their gutters as it is these leaves that end up in these gutters and pose a fire risk. People must also ensure that they have the contact details of their local fire authorities at hand should there be a fire emergency,” Gwangwa added.

It has been a sad weekend for soccer lovers in the Waterberg, after the regional SAB League champions Ditlou FC bombed out of the provincial play-offs for promotion. The third division team lost out on a chance to play in the higher ABC Motsepe League next season, after losing all four matches. Capricorn FC’s Baroka FC (not the ABSA Premiership side) and Mikhado FC of Vhembe were promoted into the SAFA Second Division League, after obtaining the first and second positions consecutively. This means the Waterberg team will revert back to the SAB League next season. Photo: Mzamane Ringane

Lizzy Bapela Modimolle handball team, Maniacs, triumphed against all odds over more senior teams, Modimolle Legends and Mokopane Seven Stars. The victory was acheived during a mini tournament held at Modimolle Sports Grounds, on Sunday, 6 August.

The event was co-hosted by the Limpopo Handball Association and the Monotong branch of the ANC. The aim of the tournament, the federation has said, was to revive handball as a sport of choice for the local community. Maniacs played Seven Stars in the first game, winning 25-8. The Maniacs team went on to beat Modimolle Legends 16-13. In the third game, Seven Stars beat

Maniacs’ captain, Samuel Baloyi, received the prize for his team, while Arnold Phosa did likewise for Seven Staras. Jan “Midos” Baloyi of Maniacs was chosen best player of the tournament. Local resident, Kabelo Ramalatsi, presided

over the awards ceremony for the players. On a negetaive note though, Seven Stars were found to have committed the most fouls during the tournament. Modimolle Legends player, Joel “Gallop” Mosemane, was the only player to have been red-carded. Meanwhile, Maniacs played in another handball tournament in Mpumalanga on Saturday, 5 August, and came out the runners-up.

Photo: Mzamane Ringane Mzamane Ringane Modimolle’s La Masia FC fought bravely but ultimately succumbed 3-2 on penalties at the hands of Peace United FC from Polokwane, on Saturday, 5 August, at the Ephraim Mogale Stadium. The two teams had to go to penalties after they drew 1-all at regulation time, during a tournament hosted by La Masia FC. It was initially expected that a total of eight teams would take part in the inaugural tournament, but the plans were changed at the last minute due to logistical reasons. Two local teams, plus an invitational team from Polokwane, Peace United FC, took part in the restructured competition. In the first match, Peace United FC hammered Egypt FC 4-1 to reach the final. The self-styled Pharaohs had a chance to redeem themselves when they did battle with local rivals, La Masia FC, in the second semi final. Unfortunately for Egypt FC, La Masia FC

proved to be a handful, with the latter sailing home 3-1 in open play. At the end of the well-attended tournament, Peace United FC shot-stopper, Karabo Keetse, was named goalkeeper of the tournament, with Molatelo Lechelele of La Masia FC taking home the leading goal scorer of ther tournament prize. The founder of La Masia FC, Tshepo Selamolela, said what he described as a successful inaugural tournament was a learning curve for his young players. He told The BEAT the team was planning to host trials to strengthen the squad further, as another tournament was in the pipeline for the end of the year, details of which would be made public in due course. Peace United FC coach, Katlego Mosia, said his boys proved they could play at the highest possible level in the not so distant future. “This was our first competition since the school holidays, so I did not expect this level of performance (with the players not fully match-fit). I have to say the boys played extremely well,” he added.

Lizzy Bapela South African Handball Federation national team player, Karabo Mogoshi, was rewarded with a brand new pair of sneakers for his role at recent championships held on the Indian Ocean island of Mauritius. Federation executive committee member and local Itireleng High School headmaster, Ally Pole, handed over the sneakers to Mogoshi. The 16-year-old Mogoshi, who is a learner at the school, was among handball players who participated at the

international men’s and women’s under-17 Beach Handball World Championships. The championships took place from 11 to 16 July. The players returned back home shortly after the tournament, with Mogoshi surprised by a special welcome at OR Tambo International Airport by the handball leadership in the Waterberg and Limpopo. Mogoshi has participated in various levels of handball at home and abroad. He started playing the sport in 2015 in his hometown of Rooiberg. He has since caught the eye of handball authorities at the local, provincial and national level.

Stage set for Bela-Bela Triathlon

It was a matter of back to the drawing boards after the Limpopo under-21 soccer squad – featuring Koketso Tselapedi of Qualitho FC – was sent tumbling from the SAB national under-21 championships. The curtain fell on the interprovincial tournament in Soweto on 29 July. A disappointed provincial side coach, Jabu Mhlaba, said a number of factors worked against his team, such as limited time for preparations. The Limpopo side was overwhelmed

Organisers said in a statement more than half of the athletes would be taking part for the first time. Another interesting statistic was that the majority of the participants in the 5150 km endurance competition were from Gauteng, giving a much-needed boost to the local economy. The field was to be dominated by male athletes at 71%, with the largest age group between 30 and 34 years. The starting point for all categories is Warmbaths: Forever Resorts. The first race, track running, was scheduled to start at 11am, from the resort through various parts of town and back to the venue. The second event would be a 1,5 km swim which was to take place within the ski dam located in the resort, to be followed by a 40 km bike course through the bushveld scenery, and back to the resort. The day was to be rounded off with a 10 km run within the premises of the resort.
