Car theft frenzy Mzamane Ringane Authorities at the Modimolle Magistrate’s Court had their hands full on Monday 7 May, when six suspects appeared in relation to cases of alleged car theft. Magistrate Nkateko Maluleke had to adjourn proceedings for a few minutes, since the gallery was packed to the rafters, with many others standing inside the courtroom. Members of the public were ordered to go outside, so as to restore order by allowing only a restricted number of
people inside the courtroom. The court then proceeded, with the cases later being postponed to 15 May for the profiling of the suspects. The suspects were arrested over the weekend. The BEAT could not at this stage, confirm whether the cases related to the recent motor car theft which has been tormenting Phagameng residents in Modimolle. Police in Modimolle have recently warned residents to take precautionary measures to avoid falling victim to this threat.
Modimolle SAPS spokesperson James Findlay told The Beat’s sister publication, Die Pos/The Post that there was an increasing number of car theft cases in Modimolle, especially in the Phagameng Township. He warned at the time that old model Isuzu bakkies and Toyota vehicles were the most targeted. Later on the day of the court appearance of the six suspects, concerned members of the community handed over a memorandum of grievances to the station commander Colonel Louisa Harmse. Among the grievances, was the rising
criminal activities ranging from residential burglaries and stealing of vehicles. The concerned residents decried that albeit reporting of these issues by residents, the police were not taking sufficient steps to keep the complainants in the loop on progress made in relation to their cases. Ward 8 Councillor Rufus Mahoro said the community held a successful meeting on Sunday 6 May, to address some of the challenges. As a resolution to some of the challenges, the community agreed to unite and establish block committees to deal with these issues, which included residential crimes.
Mokopane attorney in court for sexual assault Lizzy Bapela An attorney at law from Mokopane appeared before the local magistrate’s court on Friday 4 May, facing charges of sexual assault. The suspect was released on bail of R2000, and was expected to appear again before the Mokopane Magistrate’s Court on Thursday 31 May, pending further investigations. The well-known lawyer’s arrest and subsequent court appearance were a sequel to an incident that allegedly happened in his office on the morning of Thursday 19 April. Limpopo police spokesperson, LieutenantColonel Moatshe Ngoepe, said it was alleged the victim was in his office with the accused. Police investigations were ongoing.

TK Mashaba An apparent syndicate robbed a motorist and his passenger after allegedly puncturing the car’s tyres with spikes laid across the road on Saturday 5 May. The Bela-Bela motorist, who chose to remain anonymous, said the car suddenly screeched to a halt after driving over what he later realised were spikes. He said a total of four alleged robbers flung open the driver’s and off-side doors, dragging the two out of the vehicle. The robbers ordered them to lie face down, and then frog-marched them through a broken farm perimeter fencing. In the bushes the driver was ordered to reveal the password to his mobile phone. “When I refused to do so the four men attacked me, with one of them kicking me in the face and ribs. The driver was on Monday 7 May recuperrating at Bela-Bela’s Phodi Clinic. He said the two were travelling from Pretoria towards Bela-Bela, when they were ambushed at around 23h00. After robbing them of valuables and money, the suspects left them stranded. In The BEAT edition of Friday 4 May, the newspaper reported on police warnings about a series of armed robberies in the area. Bela-Bela SAPS detectives commander, Lieutenant-Colonel Abel Phetla, said motorists should be cautious on the particular stretch of road, as other robberies had been reported in the past. Spikes were allegedly used to puncture the vehicle’s tyres before the robbery.

Tongues of raging flames at popular Waterfront Andries van der Heyde & TK Mashaba A total of four properties along Bela-Bela’s popular Waterfront went up in flames in the late hours of Monday 7 May. Fire damage was estimated at R3 million. The local fire brigade responded swiftly to fight the inferno. Sympathisers from across town and also the nearby township rushed to the scene to help douse out the raging flames. Bela-Bela SAPS spokesperson, Lieutenant-Colonel Phetla, said investigations were under way to determine the cause of the fire. He warned against casting aspersions at this stage of forensic and other probes. Waterfront precinct owners Century 21 CEO, Fred van Heerden, confirmed that four properties behind the Waterfront and beyond the artificial lake were completely destroyed. His son, N J van Heerden, who heads the Change for Bela-Bela civic pressure group, said a number of leads were to be investigated. He said arson could not be ruled out. Van Heerden Snr said the cause of the fire could not be an electrical short circuit, as there was no power connection to the properties. By early Tuesday 8 May mopping up operations continued on site.

An amazing workshop on the workings of courtroom reporting Phew! Where do I start? There has been so many developments — for better, for worse — around the Waterberg in the past few days. Mzamane Ringane called on Sunday 6 May, to say he would not make it at the office the next day, Monday 7 May. My foot! But then my nerves calmed down when the reporter gave genuine reasons why he would not make it. Mzamane has been talking about rumours of an alleged car-highjack syndicate operating in and around Modimolle. During the mobile contact he said it had been suggested on social media that a member of the syndicate was recently cornered by residents and handed over to the police. The suspect was expected to appear in court on Monday, meaning Mzamane had to spend time there observing, among others, possible heightened security at the courts, and the number of residents arriving for the obvious formal remand. Mzamane said social media also suggested two other suspects, who initially escaped, had also been rounded up. My advice was for the police and then the courts to pronounce on such. That takes us to an eye-opening workshop both The BEAT and Die Pos/The Post editorial personnel attended last Friday 4 May. The workshop was facilitated by Caxton & CTP group legal director, Helene Eloff. It was a good workshop whereby I, the ol’ man river, was surprised by some print media legal requirements I had no clue about. For instance, I have always said to the reporters when a matter is scheduled for a court of law, no one is allowed to comment on it. Only the presiding judge or magistrate can pronounce on such. The truth, according to Helene, is that yes affected parties can comment on a court sentence, as long as both sides — claimant and

defendant — are afforded equal prominence. But then court reporting is like walking the knife edge. For instance, can ordinary people be negatively critical of a court sentence? Music lovers across the Waterberg gobbled up The BEAT’s last edition’s front page lead story, which was based on the roaring success of Modimolle’s The Rudiments Virtuoso Live Band’s performances at Johannesburg’s
Newtown cultural precinct. Mzamane has the openended assignment to keep an eye on further developments with regards to this collective of home-grown artists. Other eye-catching developments is the anticipated participation of Thohoyandou’s Black Leopards Football Club, on the occasion of the Johnny Masilela forthcoming National First The BEAT Editor Division promotional playLetter from the Editor offs.
Black Leopards FC, affectionately known as Lidoda Duvha (day shall come) mesmerised Johannesburg’s Jomo Cosmos 3-0 last weekend, in the Thohoyandou Stadium packed to the rafters. Our reporters also have an eye on the performances of Premier Soccer League campaigners, Polokwane City FC and Baroka FC, in the final stretch of the season. Both Baroka FC and Polokwane City face the dreaded relegation axe should they fail to rise to the occasion over the weekend. Down but not out goes the ambitious BelaBela Soccer Academy, who went down 3-0 to the Polokwane City development side last Wednesday 2 May.

Mayoral R80-million furore Lizzy Bapela An alleged investment of a sum of R80 million into land earmarked for housing has triggered a verbal warfare between the BelaBela city fathers and the DA. DA lawmaker Desiree van der Walt on Monday 7 May dispatched a statement to the effect that the party was reporting Mayor Jeremiah Ngobeni to the Public Protesctor over the dispute. She said the Public Protector was to be asked to probe an allegedly inflated value of the said piece of land, by upwards of R80 million. The DA said in the party’s opinion the land was estimated at a low R7 million. Ngobeni moved swiftly, dismissing the allegations as untrue, saying there was no mention of figures in a disputed letter addressed to the Co-operative Governance, Human Settlements and Traditional Affairs (COHGSTA). Van der Walt further alleged Ngobeni had sent out the correspondence in question with regards to the 240,9-hectre property without the knowledge of the Bela-Bela Local Council. In his response, Ngobeni said: “As BelaBela Local Municipality we have in recent times experienced a shortage of housing for the low-income residents, due to unavailability of land for human settlement. “In addressing this matter, Council resolved to request the MEC of COHGSTA in Limpopo to purchase the land in question.” Regarding the allegations that the mayor
signed the correspondence without the knowledge of council, Ngobeni said this was “unfounded”. “There is a council resolution on this matter. We would also like to make it clear that on the letter written to the MEC for Corporative Governance there was no mention of figures as it has been said. We don’t know where the R80 million (figure) comes from,” he added.

Date unveiled for Bela-Bela by-elections TK Mashaba The much-anticipated by-elections to fill up a ward vacated by the DA’s Kobus van der Merwe were scheduled for Friday 20 July. Waterberg IEC regional manager, Malome Nkoana, said the institution would on Saturday 26 May and Sunday 27 May go on a door-todoor registration campaign. In recent weeks ahead of the announcement of the poll date, political parties across the spectrum were already rallying their troops behind the scenes. Ward 9 was vacated by van der Merwe who has since resigned and relocated to the town of George in the Western Cape.
TK Mashaba Bela-Bela’s multi-talented guitarist Sean Sebola continues to string his way to the top. A few months ago he released his first album titled “Ga o rata (If you like)”, which has attracted much attention. Born in Ekurhuleni in Gauteng, Sebola grew up in Bela-Bela, where he developed love for music as a small boy. In the year 2008 he enrolled at the Mc Arts Academy of Music, after relocating to Johannesburg. He got his first break when, as part of the Anam Band, the ensemble was enlisted for varuious festivals. The band’s highlight, perhaps, was when it provided the sound track for a short motion picture titled “Gargoyle”. In 2013 Sebola provided back-up music for a theatrical show titled “Potchefstroom Road”, directed by the respected Martin Koboekae. The play was a hit on the road in the North West province. In 2014 Sebola teamed up with The G7 Band, which worked on cabaret at The Carousel casino. The same year the band won the Pusisano

Limpopo MEC for Social Development, Mapula Mokaba-Phukwana, was scheduled to visit Modimolle on Friday 11 May. Mokaba-Phukwana is on a whistle-stop tour of all districts across the province, engaging departmental staff in order to enhance their capacity. In the Waterberg the employee engagement roadshow would take place on Friday 11 May at the district offices in Modimolle. The MEC was expected to deliver 100 computers and two vehicles to strengthen the capacity of the district offices. The department has undertaken to host the MEC’s meeting and engagement with the employees, in a form of a roadshow, where employees will have the opportunity to engage with her. The MEC’s spokesperson, Joel Seabi, said the initiative comes against the backdrop of various challenges relating to the capacity of the districts. He said the objective was to improve employees’ daily work and ensure improved service delivery, as per the specifications of the departmental budget speech.

Mzamane Ringane Modimolle-based career adviser, Victor Legoba, who also doubles up as a tutor, took it upon himself to help prospective students who want to apply for admission and registering at institutions of higher learning. He assists young people with other academic-related advice, to make the process of applying and registering easier. “When I was applying for admission at tertiary after completing my matric, I found it very difficult to successfully complete the task. I had to stand in long queues just to submit my application, since I was using the manual application,” he said. Legoba said lack of proper career advice and making the right choices before registering for a qualification, was the reason why many students dropped out during their term of studying because they often make harsh decisions in choosing their courses. He told The BEAT that through his programmes, he assists students to choose careers that they love, something which will place them in a better position to be employable after completing their studies. Although Legoba mostly targets students from Modimolle and the surrounding areas, he also helps people from as far as KwaZulu Natal and Gauteng through his Facebook page, which is followed by no less than 7000 people.

In its bid to cling onto what should be a fiercely-contested ward, the DA has disclosed that applications for candidates were to be thrown open. National Assembly parliamentarian, Desire van der Walt, and the party’s Limpopo leader, Jacques Smalle, visited Bela-Bela recently to lend their support. According to local DA councillor, David Senosha, the twosome arrived to provide strategic advice on the process of fielding a candidate. Bela-Bela EFF co-ordinator, Sello Moswoeu, said he recently touched base with the ward 9 areas of Spa Park, Mountain View, Vingerkraal and Masakhane, to drum up support. “We are very much prepared,” he said.

Polokwane City trials for local youngster
Schools and other community-based structures are advised to communicate with The BEAT on beateditor@gmail.com for events in their own backyard.
TK Mashaba Premier Soccer League campaigners Polokwane City FC have invited Bela-Bela soccer development rising star Thabang Simelane for trials. The Bela-Bela Soccer Academy goalminder was spotted during a friendly match between his young side and the Polokwane City FC development squad played on Wednesday 2 May. On trials Simelane (19) would have the mouth-watering opportunity to work with Polokwane City FC senior side goal-keeper, the Zimbabwean George Chigova. He should also attract the eye of senior side head coach Bernard Molekwa. It is an open secret that opportunities for goal-minders at the highest level of national soccer are rare. The Polokwane City FC development side for which the Bela-Bela boy shall be on trial, plays in the popular Multichoice Disk League. Simelane hails from Bela-Bela’s RDP settlement of extension 5. He is the goal-minder for the Waterberg SAB Regional League log pacesetters, Bela-Bela Diesel ‘n Dust FC. Simelane has played for the Bela-Bela Soccer Academy for three years. He has previously played for Opleft FC. Bela-Bela Soccer Academy coach, Sam Modise, expressed his joy at the opportunity opening up for the youngster.

Limpopo soccer on a knife edge Mzamane Ringane Soccer followers across Limpopo — and they come in their thousands — were this forthcoming weekend expected to walk the knife edge in terms of do-or-die fixtures. The provincial soccer fraternity got a shot in the arm last Sunday 6 May, after Black Leopards FC of Thohoyandou walloped Johannesburg-based Jomo Cosmos 3-0, to book a place in the much-anticipated National First Division (NFD) promotional play-offs, scheduled to be staged shortly. Thohoyandou soccer followers packed the local stadium to capacity, singing and dancing in an atmosphere reminiscent of a Rio Carnival. Venda King Mphephu Ramabulana also graced the occasion, seated next to Black Leopards FC chairman and owner, David Thidiela. Although the VhaVenda celebrated like it was the real deal, the battle would start in earnest when they play Jomo Cosmos (also
qualified) and the team ending second last in the Premier Soccer League (PSL) log standings, to be decided from Saturday’s fixtures. In the higher echelons of the nation’s soccer landscape, nail-biting fixtures were scheduled for Polokwane City FC and Baroka FC of Ga-Mphahlele. Polokwane City have to triumph over Eastern Cape soccer sensation, Chipa United FC, in a Premier Soccer League (PSL) fixture scheduled for Saturday 12 May, at Old Peter Mokaba Stadium. If not, the capital city giants would find themselves fighting for a return to the paid ranks through the dreaded promotional play-offs. The promotional play-offs, ironically featuring homeboys Black Leopards FC and Gauteng-based Jomo Cosmos FC, were scheduled to be staged shortly after the conclusion of the 2017/2018 PSL season. Baroka FC would be away to Supersport United FC, also on Saturday 12 May, at Pretoria’s Lucas Moripe Stadium.

Big names continue pilgrimage TK Mashaba The Waterberg club circuit was rapidly reinventing itself into the mecca of the bigname disc jockeys. The latest to spin the turntables at BelaBela Township’s Chesanyama was Gauteng Ismail Abrahams, who works as music show host for Metro FM. The visit last Saturday 5 May was his third to the venue. Also spinning the turntables at Chesanyama the same day was DJ Amon Mokoena from Mostweding FM. Mokoena has just recently joined the Mahikeng radio station from Metro FM. Abrahams said on the side-lines of his performance that he always returned to Bela-Bela because he just could not get enough of the local groove. “I have travelled many places and played at different gigs but people here always give me added energy,” said Abrahams. Mokoena said he would, on his part, be happy to return and play in the home region
going forward. Local R ‘n B deejay Masenya Kutu said he was thrilled to have shared the same space with his role-models. “We are happy that local business owners bring celebrities into our town, which is something that builds the region’s brand,” he added.
