Desperate search for missing Modimolle priest

Strange murder in Spa Park Justin Steyn The police at Bela-Bela have confirmed the discovery of the remains of a male person, against the backdrop of questionable circumstances. Lieutenant-Colonel Abel Phetla said the body was discovered on the outskirts of Spa Park. He said the body was apparently that of a local shopkeeper between the ages of

30 and 42, and was discovered near bushes in an open grassland area on Sunday, 7 January. “The victim was discovered with his mouth, feet and hands tied together. The discovery was made by a passer-by who cannot be named,” he said. Phetla said that a post-mortem is expected to be conducted during the past week to determine the cause of death. He said that no arrests have been made and investigations were ongoing.

Mzamane Ringane The community of Modimolle, with the help of the local police, continues with a desperate search to find the missing church elder, Reverend Oubaas Jonas Mokau. The clergyman went missing on Tuesday, 26 December. Members of the community at the Phagameng Township have since dedicated their time in helping the police and the family, to look for

the 75-year-old pensioner. The One Body Church minister was last seen on the Day of Goodwill last month. It is alleged the old man was last seen by his family after he left his home to visit his sister and did not reach his destination. “The victim is tall, slim and dark in complexion. He is also a wellknown reverend from One Body Church at Modimolle,” Limpopo police spokesperson, Lieutenant Colonel Moatshe Ngoepe, said.

When he was last seen, Reverend Mokau was wearing black trousers with a long-sleeved maroon shirt, and blue slippers. Anyone with information which can assist the police on the whereabouts of the missing person may contact Detective Constable Criste de Lange on 078 813 3621 or the crime stop number on 08600 10111. Alternatively, those with information can send an SMS on the crime line 32211 or visit the nearest police station.

The crème de la crème of Limpopo politics – among them Bela-Bela’s Pinky Kekana – have pride of place in the newly-elected national executive committee of the ANC. A total of 14 politicians from the home province were elected into the all-powerful ANC NEC. The politicians from Limpopo elected into the NEC were a potpourri of populists and downright intellectuals, such as policy guru Joel Netshitenze. Former Waterberg District Executive Mayor, Pinky Kekana, was at an impressive number 47 on the 80-member strong NEC. Crowd favourite, Dr Aaron Motsoaledi, was elected at number 28 on the list, while David Masondo received the highest votes at number three. Former Reserve Bank Governer, Tito Mboweni, a strong voice within the

#ZumaMustGo campaign, was elected at number 11, followed by International Relations Minister, Maite Nkoana-Mashabane. Founding Limpopo Premier, Ngoako Ramatlhodi, also a strong supporter of BelaBela’s Cyril Ramaphosa, was at number 35. The popular Joe Maswanganyi was placed at number 49, with Thandi Mahambehlala at 58. Former Limpopo Sports MEC, Dipuo Letsatsi-Duba, and former MEC for Social Development, Health and Agriculture, Dikeledi Magadzi, were elected at numbers 64 and 65 respectively. Public Administration Faith Muthambi as well as former Deputy Minister of Water and Environmental Affairs, who is also former Minister of Arts and Culture, Rejoice Mabudavhasi, were elected at numbers 74 and 75 respectively.

Whites may give ANC of Ramaphosa their vote Lizzy Bapela Community leaders across the Waterberg anticipate scores of white people who voted for the ANC of Mandela, might as well consider giving their vote to the ANC of Cyril Ramaphosa. Businesswoman and journalist, Bea Emslie, said she was on holiday in Namaqualand when the results were announced. “I spent a considerable period of time sitting in the car, waiting for the results (of the ANC elective conference) with bated breath,” she said. Emslie said she and her husband, Dr Victor Emslie, were baffled to realise that the Coloured workers employed by the lodge in Namaqualand were somewhat disinterested in the proceedings at Nasrec. She said the employees were stony-faced when she rushed from the vehicle to break the news that Ramaphosa was the newlyelected president of the ANC

DA Ward Councillor Kobus van der Merwe At the dawn of democracy, white people in great numbers gave their vote to the ANC of Mandela, and to some extent, Thabo Mbeki. DA Ward Councillor, Kobus van der Merwe, observed that there were indeed many white people who voted for the ANC of Mandela, and did not rule out the possibility of some of these people giving Ramaphosa the benefit of the doubt. “I believe many would be willing to vote for the ANC because they had trust in the party during Mandela’s era,” he said. Van der Merwe cautioned, however, that Ramaphosa needed to go the extra mile and work hard to regain the trust of potential voters. “The number of voters (for the ANC) scaled down, and trust was lost during (incumbent President) Jacob Zuma’s era,” he said. To the contrary, Waterberg District Executive Mayor and ANC regional chairperson, Morris Mataboge, said he did not believe there were any white people who voted for the ANC of Mandela, nor would they vote for the ANC of Ramaphosa. Businessman and Change for Bela-Bela pioneer, NJ van Heerden, said he was personally convinced Ramaphosa would be a responsible leader, who should put people above self-enrichment. “Well, I for one would definitely be more open to it as I believe in him,” he said. Van Heerden called on Ramaphosa and the new ANC leadership to consider changing the the concept of Black Economic Empowerment (BEE) to Poor Economic Empowerment (PEE), in order to remove the race-based innuendo from the broader programme. At national level, Roelf Meyer, who worked closely with Ramaphosa to compose the Constitution, predicted a better outlook for the ANC ahead of the national elections in 2019. He cautioned, however, that Ramaphosa faced a number of challenges, among them, the composition of the top six, and also the balance of power within the ranks of the NEC.

TK Mashaba Bela’Bela’s Johannes Hlongwane, otherwise known as Gumaru Da G.O.D, has released his second hip hop album called Path Of Destruction.

Path of Destruction is a follow-up to the artist’s firsdt release, Straight From The Heart Hlongwane told The BEAT he was ready for the formal launch of the album shortly. His first labum sold an impressive 200 copies. “Although it was my first album, I pushed beyond the boundaries, performing with better known artists such as Trompies during the 2015 Media Bash,” Hlongwane explained. He worked with producer Madlisa and Abie-Cai and the music had pride of place on a Lephalale FM music show. He said plans were in the pipeline to shoot a music video from Path of Destruction. One of the tracks was a tribute to his late working partner, Tiego Carlos Makwela, otherwise known as Silver Banton.

Heal Our Land prayer service Khomotso Koka performs during the recent event in Mookgophong. Photo supplied

Mzamane Ringane The community of Mookgophong recently converged on the local community hall during the December holidays, to pray for both the locals and those who are far and wide. The Heal Our Land worship experience was hosted by KK Productions, where members of the audience were also enthralled with musical performances. The Mookgophong based events management company, KK Productions, is the brainchild of the local Khomotso Koka. Koka told The BEAT that they felt there

was a need for divine intervention in Mookgophong and surroundings, due to the high rate of, among other social ills, alcohol and drug abuse. The prayer event also served to make a plea for divine intervention, following sporadic incidents of human trafficking cases across the country. “We appreciate the support from the locals and also those who came from the surrounding areas. It is important for us to join hands in prayer, as these unfortunate incidents are affecting us all,” he said. KK Productions in partnership with comedian Multi B’s Guess What Entertainment are currently working around the clock to prepare for this year’s Back to School Gospel event. The event which was scheduled to be held at Mookgophong Primary School, would serve to collect and donate school uniforms to learners who are in need. “It is important for us as people to always share the little that we have with those who are in need. When I was still at primary school, it pained me to see my friends (going about barefoot) while I was wearing shoes. I would take off my shoes and put them away so that we can be equal in everybody’s eyes. This is why we are now trying to close the gap,” Koka told The BEAT.

TK Mashaba The entertainment circuit was expected to continue to go into higher gear in the year 2018, with new kid on the block, Lerato’s Pub ‘n Grill at Bela-Bela township, opening its doors to fun lovers. Lerato’s Pub ‘n Grill has lined up theme evenings starting from Thursday, 11 January, with a hip-hop night special, featuring local artists such as Majankrapa. In December the local Chesanyama had revellers screaming for more, with the visit of Pretoria deejay, Dayo Morris (aka Da Lootz), who returned to the venue by popular public demand. Going forward the Chesanyama management had plans to bring more guest deejays from other provinces, which also hosted Polokwane’s deejays Miss Groovesoul and Iggy Da Gruv, and also Gauteng’s Sonik DJ.

Club Paradise was steadily re-positioning itself for a series of live performances, such as the club had with the visit of sensational Modimolle-based TRV. Leratos Pub ‘n Grill, the new trendy joint at Bela-Bela township, featured the Afro-pop and jazz Sol Shibambu Live Band too. The pub owner, Lerato Masemola, said she was lining up various themes, starting with hip-hop nights on Thursdays, featuring local artists. Fridays would offer revellers a ladies’ night theme, with a happy hour offering discounts on certain drinks. On Saturdays the Lerato Pub ‘n Grill planned to feature resident deejays, playing mainly house music. She said on Sunday the venue planned to offer soul and jazz music. Modimolle’s Hapido Café also attracted more fun-loving customers, and has also emerged as one of the hottest venues.

Child friendly at Panarotis Twanet van der Linde, Bela-Bela writes: Many moms often find themselves looking for places to go to which entertain children and provides a small breath of relief to mothers. The Panarotis at Bela-Bela provided just that with their great service when we frequented them during December. Granted, the shop is part of a massive franchise but this place stands out from the crowd when it comes to service and providing a lot of wowness for kidz. My husband and I have recently started troubling the pizzeria with our demanding selves. However when our tummies get slightly rumbly we are left scratching our heads when on the lookout for a place that caters for my baby daughter with her busy little hands and feet. When going to public eating esatablishments in town, we are often left playing tetris trying to fit a baby stroller or carrier into a crowded area, hence why we sit outside most of the time. After much internal deliberation, and other takeout exhaustions, we decided to

purposely pester Panarottis . One hell of a lasting impression was made. Upon our arrival, staff immediatly took the onus on themselves to assist with my daughter as far as seating arrangements are concerned. They never complained or showed any form of dismay at our loud baby-saurus for sitting inside with her hungry parents. Each waiter greeted us and made us feel welcome, not something we have experienced much in other places. I recall a particular evening when our loyal serving waiter offered to bring our little lexi some cow-milk to drink, as mentioned before no other place has ever offered to do this. However my daughter is only on baby formula and just started to eat some veggies, we sadly declined the offer. The point that I am making is that they went out of their way to make us feel welcome and took such care of us and the little feet. And oh, their managers have absolutely been amazing for answering all our questions. To the staff and management of Panarotis you are all awesome.
