Bela-Bela Police have asked the community to aid them in finding the mother of a baby which was found in the open sewers in Leseding on Thursday afternoon. The baby, which appeared to be just a few days old, was dead when he was found by municipal workers who were cleaning the area.
Police currently appear to be working under the assumption that the infant, whose umbilical cord was still attached, had been abandoned by his mother. Bela-Bela Police spokesperson Constable Glen Manamela said that the police are pleading with the community to help them identify the mother of the baby. “At the moment it is difficult to say
who the mother might be, but an inquest has been opened and we are asking the community to help us find her,” she said. One of the municipal workers who found the baby said that they were shocked at the incident. “People should be responsible. The mother should have given the child up for adoption, rather than killing an innocent child like that.”
