International Day against Substance Abuse Lizzy Bapela Residents of Thabazimbi took part in the campaign and celebrations of the International Day against Substance abuse and Illicit Drug Trafficking. Spokesperson for the Thabazimbi Local Municipality, Mr Joshua Motsomane, said that the campaign was part of the commemoration at Regorogile Community Hall on Tuesday, 26 June. In her keynote address, Thabazimbi mayor, Ms Patricia Mosito, said that South Africa is facing a national crisis, which demands a community and national response. “For this reason, I call on parents, educators, community leaders, and ordinary members of Thabazimbi community to join

us in the war against alcohol and substance abuse,” she said. The Mayor further urged parents and community leaders, “I want to make a special call to you all today to participate in community structures such as the Community Policing and Substance Abuse Forums to help law enforcement agencies to deal with criminals benefiting from illegal drugs in our society. This is aimed at curbing the problem and at helping to improve treatment for addicts and support provided to affected families.” The Mayor further implored the police to be tough on drug dealers and pleaded with people living in areas where substance abuse is rife to work with the police and provide information on any illegal dealings within the com-

munity. The Mayor said the municipality would be reviving campaigns involving young adults and school pupils. These campaigns will be about how to deal with the crisis and provide information on how to get help for those struggling with or affected by substance abuse. The Mayor also called on the private sector and businesses to get involved in campaigns, as they can play an important role in communities’ fight against substance abuse. Mr Sekanka, from Social Development in the district, said that many people fall for the frenzy of consumerism, where the primary focus is on money and their lack of it. “Our careers and professions have become money driven instead of pur-

Suicide horror in Bela Bela A mattress spring base is all that remains of the shack that burned down and left a family homeless. Photo: Thandekile Sibanyoni

Thandekile Sibanyoni The winter months bring with them a higher risk of fires breaking out and quickly roaring out of control to claim property and lives. Winter in the Waterberg is the dry season and, therefore, it is much easier for a fire to get out of hand. Combine this with the many fires that are made by people, desperate to keep warm during the cold nights, and you have a tragedy waiting to happen. Residents of the Bela Bela Township are faced with this danger every day and many fire related incidents lead to the loss of life and belongings. On Wednesday, 6 June, a 30-year-old woman, Ms Anikie Maila, from Extension 9 in the Bela Bela Township, was left homeless after her shack caught fire. Maila lost her funeral scheme documents, furniture account documents, blankets and the furniture, that she was still paying for, in the blaze. Her sister, Ms Christina Khosa, said that Maila is struggling to convince the furniture shops to allow her to stop paying for the property that she has lost from the incident. “My sister went to the shop to explain that her property was burnt, but she is still struggling because they find it hard to believe her. They said she must provide evi-

dence that she lost the furniture. We took some photos of the burned shack and sent it to the shop. The process is very slow and she has to pay until it is finalised,” Khosa explained. According to Extension 9 residents, another fire related incident happened on 2 July in the same township. Residents allege that a seven-year-old girl and her mother were burned. The mother has recovered from slight injury on her hand. The child is currently in Bela Bela hospital and recovering from severe injury on her legs. On the Wednesday, 4 July, a shack caught fire and left a family homeless. This family had already relocated by the time The BEAT went to press. On Saturday, 2June, shortly before midnight, a 44-year-old man, Mr Lucas Bodiba, died when his shack caught fire at Leseding Township. All of the above-mentioned incidents allegedly happened because of candles that either fell over or set fire to the properties in question. According to Children of Fire, a charity that helps children who were burned and scarred by fire, one of the most common causes of fires is from candles falling over. “Do not think that you are immune to this danger,” they warn on their website.

pose and passion driven. Materialism has replaced our moral values and is constantly eating away our moral social fabric,” he said. “As a community, we always know where the kids are buying alcohol and drugs, and who is selling it to them. Without our help, the police might never find the culprits because they do not live here, they do not know the ins and outs of the people of this community but we do. It starts with us, we have to get up and help clean up this community,” Mosito said. Meanwhile, president Zuma expressed his shock at the rapid increase in substance abuse in South Africa over the last 10 years. He declared his government’s intentions to fight the scourge.

The body of the suicide victim was found hanging from the roof of this house. The owner insisted that all photographs be taken from the back of the house. Photo: Thandekile Sibanyoni Thandekile Sibanyoni Community members of the Zuma Township in Bela Bela were shocked and saddened when they found the body of a neighbour who apparently committed suicide. The deceased allegedly committed suicide in a shack that he shares with a friend, who only wanted to be identified as Jacob. The incident took place on Sunday, 24 June. Not much is known about the deceased except that he was a foreign national who originally came from

Maputo in Mozambique. According to his neighbours, he was admitted at the Bela Bela provincial hospital on Friday, 8 June, because he was suffering from kidney stones. He supposedly committed suicide two weeks after he was discharged. His neighbours told The BEAT that he told his friend and housemate, Jacob, that his condition is getting worse and that he cannot live with the terrible pain any longer. Nobody suspected that he was on the verge of taking his own life. Jacob told The BEAT that the deceased came to South Africa to look for work and a better life, but that he was unable to find employment due to his ill health. Jacob, who is the owner of the house that they shared, was also the person who found the body hanging from the roof of the house on Sunday, 8 July. Ms Nkele Molefe, neighbour to the two men, said that Jacob called her to come and witness the incident. “He called us to come and see and we found his body hanging,” she said. “I called the paramedics and the police to come and to collect his body. We are trying getting hold of his brother, Josh, to come and arrange transport to take his body to his home in Maputo,” Molefe said.

Modimolle criminals sentenced Lizzy Bapela A man was sentenced to 28 years imprisonment in connection with housebreaking and theft cases that have been taking place around Modimolle local farming areas. Modimolle police spokesperson, Warrant Officer James Findlay, said that the accused was sentenced when he appeared in the regional court on Friday, 29 June. The accused, Mr Phillip Marakale will effectively spend 13 years in prison before he can apply for parole. In another case an accused named, Mr Gift Mametse, was sentenced to an effective 10 years imprisonment in connection with housebreaking in business premises in Modimolle.Findlay said the accused was sentenced when he appeared before the Modimolle Regional Court also on Friday, 29 July. Warrant Officer van der Berg was the investigator in both cases and he received acknowledgement from his colleagues and management at Modimolle SAPS for the job

well done. The courts in Modimolle are keen on sending the message to criminals that crime truly does not pay by sentencing accused in major offenses. Two females and a male accused were sentenced in mid June following their appearance in the Modimolle Magistrate’s Court. The 23-year-old, Ms Constance Hlungwane, was sentenced to 18 months imprisonment, while 29-year-old Ms Letta Seleka, and 20-year-old, Mr Abram Monene, received 12 years in jail time.Findlay said the three accused were arrested for committing fraud at Kranskop in November 2011. He said the three would take a card from a client coming through the tollgate and write its number down, pocketing the money of customers who paid in cash and manually overriding the card. He added the overall defrauded money amounted to R30 000. Police warns criminals against their criminal habits, emphasising that the police will not rest in their quest to combat crime.

Woman dies mysteriously in bed Danie Visser A resident of Phagameng appeared in the Modimolle Court this week in connection with the murder of her disabled niece. Ms Ramadumetsa Christina Mabunda (36) was charged with murder after her niece was found dead in her bed. According to Warrant Officer James Findlay, Modimolle police spokesperson, Mabunda is disabled and relies on her wheelchair to get around. Forensic detectives are undergoing investigations to determine what caused the death of the niece. Findlay stated that the deceased was mentally disturbed which made it difficult for

Mabunda to be able to take care of her at times. After a slight argument, the woman ran out the house and returned later that night, and went to bed immediately. The following morning Mabunda served tea where after the deceased went straight back to bed. After a while, Mabunda noticed that the woman is not waking up. Police were notified and Mabunda was arrested after being accused. The deceased may not be identified by the press, since there was no direct family to identify the body yet. Mabunda appeared in court on Monday and was granted bail of R500; she will appear in court on the 3rd of August.

South Africa celebrates Nelson Mandela Day

Mandela Day is an opportunity for people all over the world to honour the legacy of Nelson Mandela by doing 67 minutes of community service. Photo: Supplied Nelson Mandela International Day, or Mandela Day as it is better known, is an in-

ternational day celebrated in honour of Nelson Mandela. The day is celebrated each 18 July, on Mandela’s birthday. The day was officially declared by the United Nations (UN) in November 2009, with the first UN Mandela Day held on 18 July 2010. Nelson Mandela accepted the 1993 Nobel Peace Prize, along with FW de Klerk, on behalf of all South Africans who suffered and sacrificed so much to bring peace to the country. Rolihlahla Nelson Dalibunga Mandela was inaugurated as President of a democratic South Africa on May 10, 1994. In his inauguration speech he said, “We dedicate this day to all the heroes and heroines in this country and the rest of the world who sacrificed in many ways and surrendered their lives so that we could be free. Their dreams have become reality. Freedom is their reward. We are both humbled and elevated by the honour and privilege that you, the people of South Africa, have bestowed on us, as the first President of a united, democratic, non-racial and non-sex-

Initiation schools in Limpopo Lizzy Bapela The season for the 2012 initiation schools officially started on 15 June to enrol initiates at 312 schools that were approved in the province. The Department of Corporate Governance, Human Settlements and Traditional Affairs (CoGHSTA) said, although they had issued 314 permits, two were later withdrawn due to the passing on of key personnel. The department’s spokesperson in the province, Ms Tseng Diale, said that they disapproved 23 applications because they did not meet certain requirements. As an example, applicants applying to conduct initiation schools in areas that did not belong to them and those who applied but are not recognised as senior traditional leaders. Diale said that, to date, all the schools have been complying to the latter with all the standards set to ensure that initiates are well looked after and enjoy their stay until they return to their respective homes. She said that the intake of initiates in the province is 15 926, while as, per district, Waterberg has enrolled 2 182 initiates. “It should be remembered that in 2011, we had 11 307 initiates with two death cases. In the same year, we had two cases of illegal schools operating in the province and immediate steps were taken. This year too, we have again wasted no time in taking action against such people. That is why we have the SAPS on board to deal with such people with scant respect for the law,” said Diale. She added that, this year, they still find themselves having to deal with such elements with sheer disregard for the law. Diale said that, to make matters worse, these individuals are not even senior traditional leaders. She said that, right at the beginning of the season, two cases

of illegal initiation schools were reported in the Mopani and Sekhukhune districts, the schools were immediately closed down, arrangements were promptly made with the area’s senior traditional leader, and the initiates were relocated to the nearest schools. “The fact that these schools are called illegal means the law has been broken. We will spare no effort in ensuring that such people incur the wrath of the law. We would like to appeal to parents before enrolling their children to verify from their respective senior traditional leaders about the legality or illegality of a particular school. We should take a collective responsibility to fight this illegal practice, both the civil society and government, through platforms like traditional council Izimbizos. We condemn abductions in the strongest terms possible as children should be enrolled following the consent of parents,” said the MEC for the department, Mr Clifford Motsepe. Finally, the department reports that they do not have any death cases reported so far. However, some ritual complications cases were reported where in eight initiates were hospitalised. Two have been discharged with the rest reported to be in stable condition. Motsepe says they expect all schools to wrap up their programmes before the commencement of the third school term. “We want to thank all our strategic partners, SAPS, Department of Health, task team and senior traditional leaders in Limpopo. They have done a sterling job in ensuring that our children’s health and safety receive the highest priority. With the remaining days of the programme, we have no doubt that this formidable team will ensure that this process reaches its logical conclusion and our traditional culture remains enriched,” he said.

ist government.” Following the success of Nelson Mandela’s 90th birthday celebrations in London’s Hyde Park, in June 2008, it was decided that there could be nothing more suitable than to commemorate his birthday each year with a day devoted to his life’s work, to ensure his legacy continues forever. Mandela Day is a call to action for individuals, for people everywhere, to take charge in changing the world into a better place, one small step at a time, just as Mandela did. The Mandela Day campaign initiative is simple and easy to follow; Mandela gave 67 years of his life fighting for the rights of humanity. The idea is that this legacy continues with ordinary people giving 67 minutes of their time by serving their local community. The Independent Municipal and Allied Trade Union (Imatu) recently called for Mandela Day to be turned into another public holiday. Johan Koen, general secretary of the union, said that, if it was a public holiday, people could dedicate more than 67 minutes to worthy causes. According to a press release by Bua News,

this year the Nelson Mandela Centre of Memory has joined forces with the Department of Education in the “94 Projects for Madiba” in celebration of Mandela’s 94th birthday. Ninety-four schools in need of infrastructural development were identified for urgent assistance when the campaign started two months ago. Quoting Nelson Mandela, Education Minister Angie Motshekga said: “Education is the most powerful weapon we can use to change the world.” She said good progress had been made in obtaining sponsorship for many of the identified schools. The department has also urged South African school learners to sing “Happy birthday” to Mandela at 08:00 on 18 July. The call has also been extended to people throughout the world to sing the song at the same time on the day. The Mandela Day website encourages people to participate in the Mandela Day activities in any way that they see fit. They urge people to stick to the main theme of the day: “service to one’s fellow human”.

Masakhane RDP saga continues TK Mashaba Last week, on Wednesday, 4 July, residents in the small settlement of Masakhane, near Radium, outside Bela Bela, were caught up in a scuffle due to the illegal occupation of RDP houses in the area. The scuffle turned into a full-blown fight and the Bela Bela police was called to intervene and to diffuse the matter. Bela Bela Police spokesperson, Colonel Abel Phetla, told The BEAT that tempers were flaring and that the police was called to calm the crowd. He said that there were no injuries to report and that the situation was under control. “Apparently there have been residents who have illegally occupied some of the RDP houses that was vacant and when the rightfully owners needed the illegal occupants to vacate the premises, there was a quarrel” Phetla said. Phetla further said that the Department of Housing in Limpopo was called to resolve the issues, as it was their speciality. The department resolved the issue by ruling that those who have occupied the RDP houses illegally, will remain in these houses and the rightful owners will be put on the waiting list for the new development that will be established at another site in Masakhane and Bela Bela’s Extension 8. The BEAT spoke to Bela Bela municipal spokesperson, Mr Matome Sebelebele. Sebelebele said that the municipality and the department of housing have done the verification to the rightful owners of the houses. The illegal occupants will have to vacate the houses and go on the waiting list. “There are about 150 houses to be built some in Masakhane and some in Bela Bela’s Extension 8. The department and the municipality are still in the process of seeing that they build the houses,” he said. Earlier this year on 24 February, The BEAT published a story relating to illegal RDP occupation at Masakhane. Almost 150 people are supposedly occupying RDP houses illegally

at a Masakhane. Ms Johanna Hlongwane told The BEAT of this alleged injustice after she was allegedly assaulted by Bela Bela Municipal security personnel when she tried to gain access to her daughter’s RDP house. Hlongwane, hailing from Mandela Section in Bela Bela, claims that she was assaulted last year, on 26 December, when she tried to enquire why other people were living in her daughter’s allocated house. Hlongwane’s daughter, Ms Emma Hlongwane, holds the legal title deeds to stand 282 in Masakhane. According to Hlongwane, whose left arm was badly twisted during the tussle, the municipality placed Mr Sello Legodi in her daughter’s house. Hlongwane said that she went to the Bela Bela municipal offices to talk about the fact that her daughter’s house was now occupied by someone else. She was allegedly assaulted at the municipal offices by security personnel and her arm was twisted so badly that doctors had to put it in a plaster cast. Legodi, the person who is currently living in the disputed RDP house, told The BEAT that the Bela Bela Municipality gave the house to him two years ago. “We are about 150 people who were given RDP houses here by the Bela Bela Municipality when this RDP was finished,” Legodi said. “I don’t deny being in illegal ownership of this house, but my question is: when we are taken out of these houses by the municipality, where are we going to be placed?” he added. Asked if they purchased the houses, Legodi said that no money changed hands. He claims that they were given the houses free of charge. According to Legodi, the former mayor, Ms Henrietta Ledwaba, gave the houses to them. “Some of the houses were badly dilapidated and we renovated them,” he said. Legodi said that he did not have a problem leaving the house if he is not the legal owner. He just wants to be placed in a new home, because he has been on the RDP waiting list for more than seven years.

Dangerous playground antics in Bela Bela could lead to serious injury TK Mashaba

These children made a dangerous plan and used one of the steel barriers, used on road bridges, as a slide. Photo: Meshack Baloyi

All children love to play around and have as much fun as possible, but these children from Bela Bela chose to risk their very lives on this dangerous self-made playground equipment. The children in the Leseding section of the Bela Bela Township could not play on their old swing sets after the equipment was vandalised and pulled apart. Therefore, the children made a dangerous plan and used one of the steel barriers, used on road bridges, as a slide. This section of the Bela Bela Township, right at the entrance, has become a play-

ground for many children, especially now that the schools are closed for the winter holidays and bored children are looking for places to play. Unfortunately, the children’s ingenious plan to make a slide out of the steel barrier is also a very dangerous plan. The barrier is not tied to any other part of the equipment and there are razor sharp edges where little ones can cut themselves on. Last year, The BEAT reported on the state of some of the community buildings that were extremely dilapidated and damaged. When The BEAT spoke to Mr Matome

Sebelebele, municipal spokesperson, he said that all the community parks, halls and sports grounds belonged to the community and it is therefore their primary responsibility to protect it. “These community buildings and parks must by all means be well taken of, not only by municipality, but also by the community as it belongs to them,” Sebelebele said. He said that there are many things that community vandalise and in later stages, they are the ones suffering. However, he said that maintenance was scheduled to be done in some of this buildings and parks.

Nelson Mandela Day ideas Thandekile Sibanyoni Mandela Day is a call to action for individuals, for people everywhere, to take charge in changing the world into a better place, one small step at a time, just as Mandela did. The Mandela Day campaign initiative is simple and easy to follow; Mandela

South Africans called to unite Lizzy Bapela The National Social Cohesion Summit revived the spirit of togetherness amongst South Africans and their neighbours, proving that indeed the country belongs to all who live in it.People gathered to share ideas and experiences in Klip Town, Soweto, on Wednesday 4- and Thursday 5 July. The area is a historic place where the previous Congress of the People gathered on 26 June 1995. The Freedom Charter was the core statement of principles of the Congress Alliance consisting of the ANC, SA Indian Congress, Coloured People’s Congress, SA Congress of Trade Unions (SACTU) and the Congress of Democrats. The Freedom Charter then became the manifesto of the African National Congress and the South African liberation struggle against apartheid. President Jacob Zuma kicked off the proceedings, leading a succession of speakers from parliamentarians to political party lead-

ers and union representatives. Zuma said the summit was yet another watershed moment for South Africans to carve a proud caring society. He said the founding of the constitution still envied by many, represented a milestone in the country’s transition from apartheid rule to democracy. ANC secretary general, Mr Gwede Mantashe, indicated that 2012 was declared the year of unity, saying that sport, arts and culture are all important in building social cohesion. He said whatever their political differences, political parties should never take away the national interest in their pursuit of narrow political goals. Speaking in three languages, DA’s Hellen Zille received a warm reception from the crowds. She said that a cohesive society begins with parents who take full responsibility of their families. Different ministers and members of parliament responded to the issues and president Zuma indicated that South Africa is a unique country, encouraging people to come together and unite as one.

Pheneas Monala (45): My friend and I are going to volunteer to clean the yard at the school and remove the grass and unwanted plants; make sure that the garden is neat and tidy. We want to do something nice for our community. Our learners cannot attend classes and do gardening at the same time, so we are there to help.

France Molemo (17): My friend and I are going to help at the orphanage centre. We are going to cook and clean because we feel that it is important as the youth to do something good for the society on this day.

Johannes Molekoa (17): My sister shares a birthday with Mr Nelson Mandela. I am planning to take her out for lunch, clean her bedroom and do her chores. I really want her to feel very special on her day because she shares it with our hero.

Ellen Phala (28): I will be at one of the drop centres in Bela Bela, but I have not yet decided which one. I am going to help the women who cook and wash the dishes, sweep and scrub the floor. I feel that it is important to take part in the 67 minutes and do something good for our fellow South Africans.

Abram Ndlovu (27): On Nelson Madela day I will be helping at the orphanage. I will be cleaning and cooking. I think it is very important for me to help other people not only on Mandela day but every day, but it is difficult to go and help everyday because most of us have to go to work and the only chance that we get is on this day because the employers know that we have to help others for 67 minutes.

Leah Mkgatholela (16): On Nelson Mandela day I am going to old age centre to help the nurses with the elderly people. I will do their laundry, serve the breakfast and lunch. I will be helping because I acknowledge everything that Nelson Mandela has done for our country. It will also be fun to take part because we are bored anyway.

Frank Molele (17): France and I are going together to help at the orphanage centre, It is very important to contribute in our society and acknowledge what Mr Nelson Mandela has done for our country.

Mminah Rakoma (16): I will be in Hammanskraal at Mandela Hall to celebrate the day. It is important for me to acknowledge what Mr Mandela had done for our country.

Letter to the Editor Give teenagers a voice Why volunteer This week The BEAT focusses strongly on the role of volunteering in our society. Every year Nelson Mandela Day and the 67 minutes of community service that this day encourages, emphasise the importance of every person volunteering in their own communities. Volunteering takes up our time, energy, and sometimes, money. It can be hard work. It can find us doing and seeing new things, which can be challenging and even a little scary. So why does anyone even want to volunteer? Volunteering is good for others. The world is not a perfect place, and many people, animals, places, and communities need help. Governments and professionals try to meet everyone’s needs, but it is impossible for them to do it all. This is why people become volunteers, because they can make a difference where someone needs help. If people never help each other and only care about themselves, the world becomes a sad place. However, when we volunteer our time, money, or talents, we help make our community a better, happier home where people work together to make life easier for all. Volunteering is also good for you. Volunteering is the perfect conduit to develop a new skill or to discover a new talent. Employers are often seeking well-rounded individuals who have good teamwork and goal setting skills. Volunteering can provide you with these skills. Volunteering brings together a diverse range of people from various backgrounds. Both the receivers of your volunteer efforts and your fellow volunteers can be a priceless source of inspiration and a brilliant method to expand your social skills. Volunteering offers an amazing networking opportunity. You will develop long-term personal and professional relationships. Not only is this a great way to learn about people from all walks of life, different cultures, and new businesses, but you can also hear about job openings, collect valuable employment information and develop great references. Sometimes a volunteer experience can direct you to something you never thought about or help you uncover a new skill or interest. Nevertheless, to realise this new skill or dream, you have to discover it first and you will never discover it by sitting at home, waiting for the opportunities to come and knock at your door. It just does not work that way. There are numerous volunteer opportunities available in your community. The key is to find a volunteer position that you would enjoy.

Mohlomphegi F. Mogale writes: It is with greatest respect and admiration that I write to you. As a teenager, I used to read The BEAT every other Friday with my peers and we would engage in debates about the interesting articles we read. As a young adult, studying far in an ever-demanding academic and social environment, I have less time to read The BEAT. However, I am forever thankful for the positivity that the paper inflicts in the community. I have loved writing ever since my tender years when I was first at Khabele Primary School. I wrote poems and songs for most of the duration of my primary school career and was always in the top three of my grade. It was when I got to Maope Secondary School that I grew as a writer. I wrote weekly essays about issues

s uc h as drug abuse, teenage pregnancy, the need for positive role models and the need for having a dream. Unfortunately, none of my essays was read, as there was no platform where they could be published. Thus, I write to you, bearing in mind the teenagers in our community who, like me, are literature enthusiasts but lack a platform to grow their writing skills and in the same process influence the lives of their peers. Furthermore, I would like to suggest that you provide a platform in the paper that will be utilised to publish their thoughts. Materialism and spirituality Bishop Silas Tlou 2 Timothy 3:1-5 – “But mark this: There will be terrible times in the last days. People will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boastful, proud, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, without love, unforgiving, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not lovers of the good, treacherous, rash, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God - having a form of godliness but denying its power. Have nothing to do with them.” There are two aspects of human life: one that relates to the physical body, materialism; and the other that relates to the inner self, spirituality. Materialism means an inclination towards acquiring material possessions and comforts. Spirituality means, centred and established on the soul, that is, activities in life are decided keeping in mind the awakening of the soul. There are five physical senses: touch, smell, taste, hearing and vision. No matter how beautiful a view may be, the eyes will tire of seeing it after a few minutes. The ears will not be able to listen to melodious music indefinitely. A person will be able to eat only a certain quantity of food of his liking. Thus, the senses have limited requirements, beyond which they become saturated. The mind is considered to be the sixth sense. Its attributes are greed, attachment towards worldly objects and people, and egoism. The mind experiences joy when these three attributes are gratified. Man generally engages his time and effort in satisfying the requirements of the body and the mind. The mind is different from the rest of the senses in that it is always unsatisfied and ambitious. New hopes and ambitions arise once the old ones are fulfilled. Suppose a person desires to buy a house. He would remain preoccupied with that thought because there is an attraction in it. Once a house is bought, the attraction fades. Therefore, greed and attachment are attractive only until they are fulfilled.Egoism also follows a similar principle. A worker in a company feels his job status is low and aims for a higher status so that he can elevate his standing in the society. It is possible that several persons within the company may be trying for the same position. Therefore, he/she becomes an enemy for them, since now he/she is an extra competitor in the race. In case he does succeed in fulfilling his egoistic desire in progressing towards his dream position, mental peace would elude him because there would be several people scheming to dislodge him. The worth and importance of a wellmannered, disciplined person is obviously more than that of an egoistic person. No circumstances or individuals can challenge a gentleman, whereas examples of egoistic people suffering ruin can be seen all around us

A Good Samaritan

Mr George Menyatso of Menyatso Funeral Parlour. Photo: TK Mashaba TK Mashaba A community depends on the fact that community members work together for the greater good of the community. The community of Bela Bela proved, once again, that they are always willing to

step in and help where help is needed the most. One individual in particular stepped up to the plate and did more than his fair share to make sure that one woman would get the proper burial that she deserved. Mr George Menyatso ensured that the late Florah Mabushunye Phasha, of Leseding in Bela Bela, received a decent funeral on 22 June. When Phasha passed away, she had no family in or around Bela Bela who could take care of her funeral. The local community managed to raise and donate R1025 toward the burial costs, but the amount fell short of the R7800 needed. Menyatso Funeral Parlour offered to step in and to absorb the rest of the costs as a donation to help the community conduct a respectful funeral. Menyatso told The BEAT that this is his way of giving back to the community. The funeral parlour has done the same in the past when needed and would continue to do so when necessary. “I was approached by Ward 2 councillor, Ms Spando Maluleka, to come and help with the burial as the deceased did not have anyone around,” he explained. Menyatso further says that he will offer services that are more advanced after his new building papers and permits are processed. There will also be a mortuary at this new building, since his other mortuary is far from Bela Bela.

Pick n Pay supports Nelson Mandela International Day

The Pick n Pay “Donate a book and build a future that’s full of goodness” campaign is aimed at the public to encourage them to donate books that will be given to underprivileged children. Photo as illustration Pick n Pay and the Nelson Mandela Foundation have joined arms to help South Africans answer Nelson Mandela’s call to ‘Take Action and Inspire Change’. From Sunday, 1 July, to Tuesday, 17 July, Pick n Pay Hypermarkets and stores will have collection points for the public to drop off books for the Mandela Day Book Drive. The books will then be handed over to the Nelson Mandela Centre of Memory on 18 July. The books will be donated to the Nelson Mandela Foundation’s 94+ School

project, an initiative that supports Mandela’s 94th birthday and legacy by giving hope and dignity to 94+ disadvantaged learners, and the Container Libraries project, which promotes a reading culture. The Pick n Pay “Donate a book and build a future that’s full of goodness” campaign is aimed at the public to encourage them to donate books in stores that will be given to underprivileged children. Bronwen Rohland, Pick n Pay’s Director of Marketing and Sustainability said it was vitally important that all children have access to books from a young age. “Books open a door to a whole new world - through reading, children not only improve their grammar and vocabulary but also learn about people and places from other parts of the world, improving their understanding of and concern for all people,” Rohland said. “It is a privilege for Pick n Pay to be working together with the Nelson Mandela Foundation – let us not forget that Tata Mandela has spoken about how reading sustained and kept him and his fellow prisoners up to date with the real world while they were imprisoned on Robben Island.” “Pick n Pay has always believed that doing good is good business and through our Goodness campaign is investing in helping emerging business people and communities to develop their full potential,” Rohland said.

I am more than my hair Boitumelo Moima Someday someone somewhere woke up and decided that African women were not beautiful enough. Our natural Afro was to be replaced and silky hair was the in thing. As if that was not enough, another decided that the only woman worthy of recognition was the one whose hair made a fashion statement. From girls as young as 12-years old to aging grandmothers, women are trying to re-invent themselves to fit a prescribed description of what a beautiful woman should look like. The media has played a huge role in defining beauty. Could it be that we are all trying to portray an image that does not really exist, because the people we admire on television have had their images photo-shopped and worked on until a picture perfect reflection was formed and shown to the public? Is that who we have become as well, reflections of nonexistent images? If that is the case, then where is one to look for the real beauty? I think a look within would be a good place to start. When interviewed, the women at the Vanessa Hair Salon said that all women are different and so are their preferences, personalities and circumstances. There is nothing wrong with looking beautiful according to a person’s own standards. The problem comes when a person is not accepting and confident with their natural state of being and starts using synthetic material to fill the void. Imitating the media can become an obsession and that is a weakness. The women also went on to say that the public considers one backward if they wear their hair naturally. Ms Annah Maheso said, “We were conditioned to think that beauty is what the non African women looks like,” and the other women agreed. They reminisced about the times when they would use heated stones to straighten their afro hair, which lead to a lot of laughter. Bela Bela resident Ms Rinah Hlongwane said that, in her opinion, a woman’s beauty is determined by her hair. “It’s a top down approach,” she said confidently. Thirty nine year old Victor Kekana agreed. He said that he would personally pay for his woman’s hair-do because, according to him, women who have natural hair do not look as great as those who have weaves. “If fake looks good then fake is good to go,” Kekana said. Mr Mafafo Jan had a different opinion. He said that a women’s beauty starts with her heart not her hair. Summit Salon owner, Ms Amusan Kemi, said that a woman should always look beautiful and her hair should always be the first place that shows the rest of the body’s beauty. She further added that those women who prefer looking natural chose to do so because they have their own definition of beauty. With all of that said at the end of time whether curled, afro, relaxed, weaved or waved, hair is undoubtedly a pertinent reflection of oneself but it is not the main component of one’s whole being. A great hairstyle will turn heads but only a good heart will break necks.

Every failure brings with it the seed of an equivalent success. A1 Terrors to start planning for the new season TK Mashaba

One of Modimolle’s best SAB Waterberg Regional League contenders, A1 Terrors, is going back to the drawing board to prepare for the new season that will kick off in the beginning of September. A1 Terrors ended the last season under the top three teams and they plan to take their place in the first position on the league log during the next season. Therefore, their first training session will start as early as next week on their home grounds in Modimolle. Mr William Thulare, owner of this top team, told The BEAT that there are many more plans in the pipeline to make the most of the next league season, but would not give away too much of their secrets. A1 Terrors is one of three teams in Modimolle who will be playing in the SAB Waterberg Regional League in the next soccer season. They will be joined by Troublemakers and Young Black Lizards FC to keep Modimolle’s name high during the season. At this stage of the race, Modimolle based soccer fans and fanatics have pinned all their hopes on A1 Terrors to make their

mark on the SAB League. Mokopane based Mosesetjane All Stars were the Waterberg champions during last season’s SAB Waterberg Regional League. Their first place on the log earned them the chance to play in the play-offs in Venda. A win there would have given them the opportunity to be promoted to the Vodacom League, but they did not make the cut. Two other teams will not be competing in the SAB Waterberg Regional League during the next season. Leventis FC was disqualified from the league after they failed to honour their match games due to financial and related issues. Thabazimbi based Zaba All Stars were relegated back to the Thabazimbi Local Football Association league among many allegations of match fixing and unreliable referees by their owner. Bela Bela FC United also had some trouble during the last SAB Waterberg Regional League season. They were expected to reveal their future plans on Thursday, 5 July, but made no announcements. Mr Zwakala Mokoma, team official, told The Beat in a brief interview that the team’s future was still uncertain at this stage of the race.

5150 Bela Bela Triathlon closing Baroka FC does not make the cut end of July Things are hotting up on the 5150 Bela Bela front with the closing date for entries, 30 July, fast approaching. Entries have already exceeded last year’s numbers. The 2012 edition for the 5150 Bela Bela Triathlon promises to be one of the most exciting yet and with entries streaming in excitement is already high amongst athletes. Utilising the winning formula of the world’s most popular triathlon distance and similar infrastructure seen at Ironman and Ironman 70.3, this is one race that should not be missed. The 5150 Bela Bela Triathlon is the perfect race for novice as well as serious triathletes. There is no better way to get into triathlon as the open water swim is wetsuit legal and takes place in a skidam that is shallow enough to stand in at its deepest point. The bike course is tough and offers a serious challenge while the fast and

flat run takes place entirely within the Forever Resorts Warmbaths complex. In addition to the awesome race action, the atmosphere on race day truly adds to the fun and excitement with the Forever Resorts Warmbaths offering a discounted day entry rate of R50 per non-resident spectator on race day. Immediately after the race, the 5150 Awards Ceremony and Finish Line party on the red carpet will end the festivities off on a high. Athletes and spectators can have a great time with the Distell Tent and Spur Tent open to athletes and the public offering great food and refreshments. Entry fee to this premium triathlon event is R800 for individuals and R1000 for teams. Entries close 30 July so get online to www.5150.co.za and book your place on the starting line of Africa’s best standard distance triathlon.

Baroka FC missed their dream to play in the National First Division (NFD) League when they were beaten in the NFD promotional play-offs. Photo: Mzamane Ringane TK Mashaba The once mighty and revered Baroka FC missed their dream to play in the National First Division (NFD) League once again. Their dream was shattered when they were beaten in the NFD promotional playoffs that took place in Seshego, outside Polokwane, over the last weekend. Baroka FC made national headlines two years ago when they beat the two, much feared, Soweto giants, Moroka Swallows and Kaizer Chiefs, during the Nedbank Cup tournament of 2010 and reaching the semi finals of this prestigious competition. The Ga-Mphahlele based team have been trying their level best to make it into the NFD, but had no luck so far. This time it was Roses United’s time to shine when they were promoted to the National First Division following their 1-1 draw against Baroka FC in their play-off game. The Free State side finished at the top of their group, undefeated with 10 points from four matches. Baroka came to this match, desperately needing a win to qualify, as they were second on the log at that time, two points behind Roses. Unfortunately, they conceded a goal in the first half as John Tlale’s men

took an early lead through Patrick Ngidi. Roses fought tooth and nail for the draw that made sure that they earned their promotion. Free State side Roses United are the 2012 Vodacom League champions after defeating Milano United from the Western Cape 4-2 on penalties in a tense final at Seshego Stadium outside Polokwane. The match finished goalless after 90 minutes. With both sides having already clinched automatic promotion to the National First Division by virtue of winning their respective groups, the grand finale was always going to be a closely contested affair and, despite great effort from both teams, neither was able to find a way to break the deadlock. During interview with PSL, former Bafana Bafana international player, John Tlale, who is now the coach of Roses United said, “I cannot properly express how proud I am of my boys.” “At the beginning of the season, we drafted a three-year plan for promotion and we have achieved it. Credit must go to everyone involved with this club for their unified commitment to reaching our common goal,” Tlale said
